Holy smokes, the final five seconds of the test scene is far more scary realistic than any scene in the movie Twister. I have to believe that whoever created the effect witnessed a real tornado, which was exceedingly rare sight to see before TV and video.

It seems to me they didn't show the house being engulfed by the twister in the movie, as that would have confused reality with her dream? Now I will have to go view the film again, as I am not quite sure! I first saw the movie as a five year old on black and white TV. My parents put me on the floor directly in front of the TV, as they wanted to watch me watching it! The movie instills family values consistent with America's founding.

Makes me wonder if the person who created this scene had seen a real tornado with a visible sub vortices (two twisters). Either way, the person whi made this scene really understood how terrifying they were.

1:45 - while the use of the "sock" is incredible, I feel it's moments like this, when the funnel is largely obscured by dust cloud effects, that hide any chance of recognizing the practical effect and really sell you on the "authenticity" of the tornado.

I remember being on the edge of my seat when I first saw this as a kid. The way it got so dark so quick & how strong the wind was. At least with a hurricane you have time to get away, but tornados are just a whole other beast. As a kid I was really worried for the animals, particularly the horses, but as a grown up you think about Dorothy's anut & uncle & the farm hands all huddled down in that celler listening to the twister come roaring closer knowing that she was outside somewhere & all scared for her. Can you imagine when they all came out and found her unconscious in her room? She must have been out a while given that her uncle says they were worried she was going to leave them. As for that test footage at the end, while its really impressive, I can see why they cut it out. Given how close it gets to the house and then the dust just seems to implode around it, people could easily assume the farm was destroyed and that Dorothy may have died and the whole thing was her in heaven or something.

If that test scene remained and was in final film, I'd imagine part of that clip playing just before Dorothy gets knocked out by the window sill. Perhaps an extra clip plays of a close up of the bottom of the house being lifted, then cut to the ending of tornado footage that transition fades to the normal clip of Dorothy's unconscious face and showing the house being spun up into the sky, the rest playing normally from there.

It’s really impressive what the creators were able to accomplish, given that they didn’t have half the knowledge of what we know about tornadoes today. That last bit should have been kept in. Builds the suspense

      I respectfully disagree.
(Spoilers below. For those who somehow haven’t seen the movie yet)
From the end of the movie, we know that the tornado likely didn’t REALLY lift up the house in one piece and fling it all the way to Oz. It’s more likely that it just caused some damage to the farm and the house as it passed by after Dorothy got knocked out by the window, and all the events of the movie after that were just a dream. After the tornado dissipated, everyone left the storm shelter and found Dorothy unconscious inside the house. After giving her some medical care, she woke up to her family, inside the intact house, in Kansas. If they had kept that last bit of the tornado in the movie, it would’ve been pretty unrealistic. As there is no chance Dorothy would’ve survived that, or the house would be intact after a tornado shred right through it.
But you’re totally right about that bit building suspense.

@@itheman6s766 yes. Ultimately it depends how they wanted to end the story. Whether as in the book or like this with it all being a dream which would have made this sequence rather inconsistent or a testament to how they build things in Kansas withstanding an F1-F3 whatever this would have been lol

    Ow my ears.
Also, everyone who watched this scene as a kid became infatuated and terrified of the prospect of a tornado hitting their area...there's something just so ominous about the way THIS tornado looks, even though that's not exactly how they look (they don't look so solid, typically).

Interesting fact. Charles Grapewin was the actor who played Uncle Henry. He was from Xenia, Ohio. This town was struck by a violent EF5 tornado in 1974. Comparing the fictional Wizard of Oz tornado to Xenia’s real storm was like comparing a teen vandal to a terrorist. 🌪
