Love the Headmasters. That G1 Fortress Maximus was one of the coolest things I've ever seen online as a kid. And at one point the biggest transformer figure of all time. Boy, what a time that was👌
I think I like the idea of them being Robots that build bigger bodies. Sharing a brain with someone else, out of the blue, and for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, seems torturous.
It was also more realistic (for a cartoon). I didn't give the American version the time of day as a kid when it was first released. I always imagined the humans breaking their bones during the transformation. The Japanese's version of smaller robots wanting to be bigger to fight made more sense.
It's a such a successful and useful product line back in 2008 despite it's purposefully annoying 📺ad campaign. Yet it hasn't been on store shelves for over a decade now.
The concept makes SO much more sense in Japan where the head is the only alive one. Otherwise what does the transformer actually DO when the head isn't around? Like are they even still them at this point if their brains are gone because this was before Sparks were a thing.
@@Maswartz226 When separated they’re still linked, the human still has the Cybertronian “present” in their mind and the Cybertronian can still “sense” the human. Two minds, one body, always.

I remember getting Chromdome and Stylor and Brainstorm and Arcana as a kid for Christmas. I didn't know the characters AT ALL, but I was a poor kid who loved Transformers and these were OFFICIAL toys (not like the bootleg Optimus Prime that I had before). So I loved them and played with them for years.
I have always loved the Headmasters subline, and I'll quote a response to someone else who likes Headmasters on another platform... "That is why the Headmasters/Brain Masters/Horrorcons/Titans Return have been my favourite sublines of Transformers. I could imagine, if they were real, I would love to be a Headmaster, transforming into the head, having full control over the Cybertronian warrior, and then being able to have a normal life otherwise."
I have vivid memory of getting Chromedome at a garage sale when I was in elementary school, which became one of my favorite toys. Of course I didn't know his name until many years later when the Titans Return version came out, which of course I bought immediately. Come to think of it, I think that probably what got me back into collecting Transformers. The Titans Return figure still stands prominently on my shelf, a sort of icon of my history with these toys.
Even though I'm primarily a G1 fan, I prefer the Headmasters to be a race of smaller robots that connect to transforming vehicles to form normal sized robots. This also acts like a prequel to the human-sized Maximals and Predacons.
These were peak Transformers for me. I was the perfect age and I loved the idea of having a pilot that was vital to the toy. I took Scopinok to school for show and tell and heartbreakingly lost the head.

And makes it more believable than an organic being undergoing surgery to become a robot head. This is how I’d reintroduce the concept, anyway. I’d also change Nebulos into being a Cybertronian colony world. One founded by Micronus. Who later founded the world of the Micromasters. Nebulos would be home to the Head, Target, Power, Battle and any other type of master that act as an accessory to a larger robot. But in the case of Target and Battle masters they are simply a special type of Minicon partner. Not related beyond being a gimmick but the Pretenders I’d make a connection to Onyx Prime for the beastial Decepticons. Being a form of techno-organic beings. They go from beast to vehicle like in the Legacy line. While the Autobots would adopt the ability but use their mass shifting technology to turn into humans (or other aliens). This allows them to hide among worlds like in Japan. This method would later be used by the Cons to create criminal groups on other worlds. Part of their invasion strategy or just for their own profit.

Loved the Headmaster toys, thought it was an awesome concept. I assumed and hoped they would expand on the idea with a Headmaster combiner team with combining head... Instead we got the pretenders 😐
The Headmasters was the last straw with Transformers for me as a kid. I thought and still think the storyline was completely idiotic. However, later on I saw the Japanese version and LOVED Headmasters after that. And what a theme song!
Headmasters were definitely my favorite G1 line. I found it interesting as a kid the way the comics and cartoons both handled that story differently. Then as an adult I saw the Japanese version of the Headmaster story and I felt jipped
I don’t have any original g1 headmasters but the concept of headmasters always intrigued me when I first found out about them, as for my favorite of the group of headmasters I’m into ape face because of his short role in the cartoon 😅 “Yuk noble autobot make me wanna puke” 😂😂😂 -Apeface 1986
I can't believe you use clips from that crazy insane show. For those of you who've never seen it there's a scene where the Autobots are exercising in the gym. Not the human headmasters the robots. The robots are doing cardio and weight training. The robots
In one of the first episodes I saw minicons, they were break dancing, ..., in their CAR MODE. 🤦♂️ And in one G1 comics with the micromasters, there were wrestling. Haven't read it.
I personally have a hard time keeping track of the heads' names. If I made a Transformers series my Headmaster origin would be an amalgam of past origins. When Micronus Prime split up from the others he encountered Nebulous. He would team up with the locals creating transforming armor for them that could empower large robots by attaching to them. Some would build larger bodies for themselves, others would team up with larger robots as weapons, and the remaining would remain independent but willing to help others they liked. Long after Micronus joined the Well of All Sparks the locals would evolve into their armor making them more robotic but still organic at their core. As time passed those with larger bodies would seek to control the smaller ones leading to events similar to The Rebirth that would see them meeting, and in some cases bonding to, Cybertronians. There are three types of Headmaster (and by extension Powermaster): converted Cybertronian where the body and head share a mind, bonded pair where they're separate individuals, and OGs from before Cybertron discovered them where the body is just a machine controlled by a smaller individual.
Neat fact in the later japan toyline info its said metalhawk had new robot bodies made for the kid jr headmasters after the old ones gained full life! Pretty neat.
I'm writing my own script about Headmasters, based on the Japanese concept of tiny robots that transform into larger bodies. It's a Pentalogy and I created many new ideas and characters and a creation story. Its been a challenge following in the G1 timeline, but I think I have it 😊 I'll be working on part 3 soon. I don't know where I'll go with it but its been an adventure for the past year.
That’s funny since my transformers fanfic series will include the Headmasters. It will mostly be based on the rebirth but it will have stuff from the Japanese series as well. Surprisingly it will lead into Beast Wars with an ending mix of the regeneration one and that Optimus Primal is Cerebros son.
A little confusing for me. As a kid, I liked the idea of head masters and the toys were pretty cool. I would have like to see more headmasters. I don’t think the concept was explored enough.
One idea I REALLY want to see more of with the Headmasters themselves are just the robotic head that connects to a larger lifeless body, is for them to better interact with alien species that are close to human sized. Sure they might come off a bit intimidating at first. But not nearly as intimidating as the average sized Cybertronian. This can apply to the Powermasters as well.
Headmasters were the best, unlike powermasters i never lost the heads of the toys. I still despair losing my darkwings powermaster seeing how much they cost now
And, Brainstorm wants to sue them for stealing his idea, always put copyright trademark on it. 5:21 That nerd should think about which size of heads does work on the Cybertonian tranforming into. 11:21 A one angry Headmaster loves ripping of any Decepticon's heads more deadly than Optimus Prime with taking facing off. 11:50 I with Scrouge's side. 13:15 *Rest in peace, Jason David Frank. You are the amazing actor ever.* 14:14 He will rule the galaxy? His destiny, yeah, sure, Meagt- I mean Galvatron. 16:00 The Japanese version of Transformers Headmasters' story works for me, hope the Headmasters and also Targetmasters return back soon, even non G1 Autobots and Decepticons before go with Headmasters characters form as well, thank you for the Headmasters history and *HEAD ON*
Honestly, the Titans Return toyline is easily the most successful of the Prime Wars trilogy, seeing as how we're STILL getting Titan Master-associated toys as of July 2024, with Squeezeplay/Cancer. And I'm grateful that it has given me the best Arcee toy I could ever find. Killed my need for 86 or any other version. Also, it's interesting that, moving forward, it's the Japanese version of the system that has more or less been the norm for their portrayal, as seen with Cogman, and the Animated version prior, whenever we have new takes that aren't meant to be callbacks to The Rebirth. I didn't actually watch the Machinima show, so I didn't know that's how Emissary met his end. Rather ironic that a human-sized Transformer voiced by Jason David Frank gets eaten by a Godzilla-like machine. Nobody can convince me that wasn't intentionally written if he was already cast. Also RIP
In the early days of eBay, I lucked out & scored a lot of MISB Headmasters from overseas & some had the Headmasters stickers on them. A lot of times, it seems like overseas gets the cooler Tf releases. I was thrilled to get the Car Robots 2000 Fort Max, but slightly saddened he didn't have all of the original partners. Nightbeat always was my favorite due to his role in the comics! Great review, sir- thanks for putting it up! Do you have a favorite Headmaster?

My Favourite Autobot Headmaster are brainstorm and Nightbeat and my Favourite Decepticon Headmasters are Scorponok and Snapdragon. Now Headmasters are my 2nd favourite ( I like the Targetmasters a little more) and I have even made my own headmaster Characters (The Autobot Nitrodash who’s transforms into a Bullet-Train and my two Combiner Teams The Stealthacons a Who Combines into Shadow Saber with one member transforming into the head of the combined form and another into his Gun who Fights against their Autobot rivals The Reconbots who combine into Reconamus). What’s your Favourite Headmaster?
I have a 1988 Dutch version of nr 16 which has "Optimus Prime Powermaster!!" On the cover. It an episode where Dreadwind and Darkwing combined as Dreadwing arrive on Nebulos. It's the only Transformers comic I have. Was probably part of a 5-pack of comics I got when going on holiday for in the car ride. I've known throughout the years other forms existed, but for me it's this one. Single episode of 22 pages, and a different story after that. The big broadcast of 2006 (translated).

I know Frank Springer made a lot of character model mistakes in the Headmasters miniseries, but i really enjoyed the energy he brought to the art, i kinda wish he'd taken over the art chores from Don Perlin when he left the main book in '87
Chromedome was my favorite Headmaster, Crosshairs was my favorite target master & Power Master Prime was my favorite power master
I really hope we could get more Transformers Headmaster and Targetmaster near in the future because I really like the idea of it
Great video l thanks!
5:00 ngl when I was middle school my friend and I discussed if the nebulons were really namekian, well they went to New fake namek 😆
Headmasters were definitely my favorite G1 line. I found it interesting as a kid the way the comics and cartoons both handled that story differently. Then as an adult I saw the Japanese version of the Headmaster story and I felt jipped
Trigger Masters! (The lost Master Type)
I don’t have any original g1 headmasters but the concept of headmasters always intrigued me when I first found out about them, as for my favorite of the group of headmasters I’m into ape face because of his short role in the cartoon 😅
“Yuk noble autobot make me wanna puke”
😂😂😂 -Apeface 1986
I can't believe you use clips from that crazy insane show. For those of you who've never seen it there's a scene where the Autobots are exercising in the gym. Not the human headmasters the robots. The robots are doing cardio and weight training. The robots
Got to make sure their joints are working properly.
In one of the first episodes I saw minicons, they were break dancing, ..., in their CAR MODE. 🤦♂️
And in one G1 comics with the micromasters, there were wrestling.
@@sethstrattan7380let me know where to read yours.
@@sethstrattan7380let me know how I can read it.
I really want to see a Daniel/RC Headmaster figure.
Arcee*
same here
They did an exclusive toy of the two. It used the blurr mold in pink and white.
Still wish we got some sort of continuation after the "Rebirth" Season 4 with that version of Scorpinok with that version of Galvatron.
Transformers Headmasters
Marvel Comics: Organic human beings
G1 show: Alien humanoids
Japan G1 show: Robotic variants
Headmaster action figures were the best ❤❤
"Apply directly to the forehead!" Instantly popped into my mind if yall remember that old commercial
Same here when I first saw the anime.
HUMAN: You're severely damaged
CYBERTRONIAN: Just give me a head, I'm about to blow
HUMAN: That doesn't sounds so nice
Well at least some headmasters are getting some time in the spotlight Skullcruncher for example appeared both in cyberverse and in Earthspark.
The only Titans Return Headmasters I have are Hardheaded, Highbrow, Astrotrain , and Krok.
Transform head on
Headmasters were the best, unlike powermasters i never lost the heads of the toys.
16:00 The Japanese version of Transformers Headmasters' story works for me, hope the Headmasters and also Targetmasters return back soon, even non G1 Autobots and Decepticons before go with Headmasters characters form as well, thank you for the Headmasters history and *HEAD ON*
For a few years I've had the concept for a new take on all the master based Transformers to be a splinter faction of Mini-cons.
I had chomedome and my brother had scorpanok.I still have them minus the heads.
I always liked Mindwipe for HeadMasters. Scorponok was cool too.
Also RIP
I love the Headmaster concept of Japanese timeline. You know. The big robot is a mecha suit for a smaller robot being actual minds.
Head On!
“This is unicorn soon the earth will be a part of me”
Would love you to do a video on these so callled "exclusives" which are anything but exclusive
Do you have a favorite Headmaster?
headmasters! :D
IC-ly/lorewise, they used Nucleon for an energysource and using too much Nucleon removed their ability to transform
WHAT DOES EVERYONE WANT!!!
I really want a modern figure of horri-bull.
It´s so hard to decide which Master is the best, but choosing the worst is easy
80s and 90s transformers where something to behold i don't get that with 21st century transformers i feel like there's something missing but i don't know what it is 🤔
👍🏾
My favorite headmaster is hardhead
Mh favorite Autobot is Hardhead and my favorite Decepticon was Apeface, but the TR version of Apeface wasn't that good.
like they say, it is better to have a head than being headless.
If I remember correctly in an episode didn't Hook transform into the head of Devastator just Luke a headmaster and even walk around independently
I like both takes on The Headmasters and would love to see The Headmasters return in a Cartoon.
Oh, original episodes were 42 and 43 of The Transformers. Juniorpress 88 - 48.
