I really wish people would stop coming on here just to say that 'Yea, this is pretty good but Joe Bonamassa ROCKED IT and made it his own!' like, great, whatever, I'm glad that you like Joe Bonamassa's version and that it brings you joy, but while here can we please just enjoy the Tim Curry version? ( ie, the original) ._.
Holy masterpiece Batman. This is so painfully beautiful. No one can sing these lines in that moves-you-and-makes-you-shiver voice like Tim Curry and plus Dick Wagner's guitar playing is so soul-reaching beyond belief. Great to hear him playing so beautifully on tracks like this as well as "Alan", "S.O.S" and the like, considering he had rocked so hard for so long. Overall this is truly worthy of way more praise than the mainstream gives it. ☺☺☺
Tim Curry did not write Sloe Gin. It was written by Bob Ezrin and Michael Kamen. Tim was the first to record it (Read My Lips lp) and both Ezrin and Kamen played on the album. Dick Wagner plays lead guitar. I agree this is a darker version than Bonamassa's and, because of Tim's vocals, has a different feel. I like them both.
Incredible! I'm old enough to remember when this was released in 1978 and as a kid I nearly fell over when I heard the lyric ;-) Session player Dick Wagner on guitar, Wow!!! - Re: all the comments about Bonamassa. Personally as a guitarist and having played for decades I can tell you any musician who spends hundreds of thousands of hours out of their life practicing and getting to the stage where they records and tour at the level of Bonamassa is already a legend. Whether I like his/their music or not I have a deep respect for dedication and persistence for what it takes to succeed. And, it doesn't matter where they come from. In my opinion ;-)
Gil Obler Mike Kamen and Bob Ezrin apparently were the guys responsible for composing this tune. Bravo to them for creating these heartbreaking, meaningful lyrics and music.😃
God, this song... can't believe I found it after 40 yrs! I hear again why I loved it so passionately & also why my family was so worried about me... those lyrics, damn!! But the bluesy funk musicianship is awesome, & Curry a demi-God ♡
"Does justice?!?" He absolutely KILLS it! I've heard other versions, and they just fade away when compared to Tim Curry's original. His emotion ... his use of both the strong and the vulnerable of his voice ... This is a masterpiece, and leaves me speechless every time I hear it.
Yeah its really good in a "raw" sort of way. Sounds like he woke up in the middle of the night, couldnt sleep, then got up and recorded this song. I really like Joe Bonamassa version though. Joe is a great singer and guitarist. Its a lot more polish sounding.
l think the whole point of the song is to NOT sound polished. The exact point is what the person who said 'sounds like he woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep'. lf you have never been this lonely and heart broken you maybe can not understand. Not all music needs to be polished and produced. This version and Tim's voice evokes all sorts of emotions and pain. To each their own. *shrug*
@@hoopla5108 Exactly my opinion. Tim recorded a masterpiece here. Masterpieces aren’t carefully polished, they are raw and emotive and they say FUCK and the guitar wails like a dude started crying because life was too much. That’s what this original has.
@@dukeon Exactly, I think it's the "fucking", instead of the "damn lonely" that does it for me. 😄 Tim just has a way of giving this song the intimate touch it needs, in my opinion.
Found this today…. Choked me up on a number of levels….. I have three versions of this song By JB… Think Albert Hall my favourite….. but TC… difficult to reconcile this and my mental image of him in stockings and basque….. I ‘m the same age as Tim luckily functioning most of the time….. but there but for the grace of whom ever goes all of us…… I , and certainly most of us have felt alone at times even in a crowd with friends and family. He ha s captured the emotion perfectly…. When I heard this I phoned my daughter to check it out…… She has always been a big Rocky Horror fan. Amazing and emotional rendering !
Never will I ever get tired of this masterpiece. Tim's voice just kills this one and also, can we just appreciate how freaking awesome Dick Wagner's guitar solo in this song is?!? It gives me goosebumps each and every time. God knows why Tim never really made it big as a rock star 🤷🏻♀️
I love this song so much even though it breaks my heart! Tim reaches my soul with his charisma and empathy! In the song I accompany him to the bitter end!
Funny that you call Curry's version weaker. Joe is a great blues guitarist and his version evokes just that. But his is a blues-version cover, watered down with PG-13 lyrics. Curry's version, besides being the original, was, originally pure emotion and style, back in 1978. And don't even try to tell me Dick Wagner's guitar playing on it is anything but sublime. That's all I've got. XO
Just my opinion, but ... I feel that the "minimalism" IS what makes the original so powerful. In a song about being lonely, it's fitting I think for the mood to "be" a lonely, sparse one.
Dude, thank you so much for posting this. Heard this song in 1980 in an army barrack on a crappy little mono cassette player but the owner didn't know who or what the song was. I've had the "I'm so fucking lonely"refrain to this song in my mind for over 30 years and didn't know who performed it or even what the song was called. I put out an alert on fluther.com and hit pay-dirt and your post confirmed it.
It's not about the f-bomb (although, when this was released in the late '70s, it WAS a pretty big "deal"). As for whose vocals are better, we call such claims "opinions." It's all about one's personal sensibility. I heard Tim's original years ago, and felt then, as now, that it's one of the most angst-ridden, heart-breaking performances I've ever heard. His rendition was "my first" ~a factor that can color one's opinion. If one is secure in his/her opinion, there is no reason to insult others.
This (comments like yours) is why I LOVE the internet and RUclips! How cool is it that we can constantly expand our interests and find "gems" we haven't previously known about?!? His songs cover a range of styles ~ You'll probably like "S.O.S." and "Something Short of Paradise" -both from the Fearless album. I'm a long-time fan, and just found one of those "gems" for myself a couple days ago -- Tim Curry's performance of "Street Signs" in a pre-RHPS British TV show, "Rock Follies of '77."
It pops up in a lot of articles on Tim Curry that he is essentially a loner- he's described himself as one! So when I hear him cover a song like this, I kind of wonder..
I agree somewhat, but I fell in love with this song because of Joe's playing. I enjoy this version, and there is actually a really good Live version of this version floating around as well.
I'll take this version over any of the various versions that are posted all over youtube of Bonamassa doing this tune. It just rings truer to my ears - more honest and more painful. I am impressed by Bonamassa's abilities on the guitar, but this version moves me which is more meaningful than being impressed.
Tim did, however, write the lyrics for the other song of his that Joe B. covered -- the wonderful, bluesy "No Love on the Street." Ezrin and Kamen have been prolific in the world of music. I've revered them for years for having written "Sloe Gin," which I consider a simple and stunning masterpiece. Whether they wrote the song "for" Tim, or gave it to him as a previously`written song, the choice was brilliant ... and I'll always be amazed that the song AND Tim's career aren't more well-known.
Beautiful Version!!! I would always prefer Bonamassa's version (one of my all-time favorites) but I can't help but chill to the bluesy sounds of this version. It clearly takes Sloe Gin to a whole level of blues. Amazing.
Like many already commented i thought this was a JB song but then i heard him say it was not on one of the extras on his muddy wolf dvd , first time i have heard this and i like it, this guy sings like he really means it when he says "im so fucking lonely" especially at 3:29 it's heart breaking!
true that. the watered down lyrics probably stem from the fact that joe is a blues guitarist first, and a lyricist second. not that he doesn't have the vocals to pull it off, but his first love was the guitar. i think it shows in his version - the instrumentation is phenomenal. you've gotta love the stylistic flare of curry's vocals though; way less rigid than joe's version. you can tell he owns the song.
You're delusional bro, Lou Reed's career was made before he even met Wagner and so was Alice Coopers. you're starting to sound silly now. I'll wait for those actual PROOF OF SALES about Only Women Bleed the ALICE COOPER song that Mr. Wagner is so famous for. He's got more fame than Bonamassa? Sure, you tell yourself that if it helps you sleep at night.
...and the majority of folks who buy records and pay for concert tickets agree with you. I'm a fan of Curry and Wagner is an adequate guitarist but Joe now OWNS this song and his emotion when he plays this live blows away the three versions I've heard of Curry doing the song.
I was lucky enough to save all of my vinyl and have a digital copy of this luckily I had the album saved to my phone because I formatted my hard drive that had all of my music on it almost 1 tb but all my favorites was on my phone thank GOD
..by the way..i grew up with Dick Wagner ( Alice Cooper Band) and i´m a fan since the 70´s, but i also really love Joe Bonamassa. They´re both in my heart and there´s place enough for lots of more guitar heroes...so fckn what!? ;-)
good points made above, this track is perfect for what it needs to be you don't need bonamassa style ripping solos you could in fact remove the solo and its still an amazing tune would you agree?? im a guitarist and a guitar snob lol i think the best part of this track is the keys line
Ruh Roh. prepare for the wrath of claypool. You can't call a Dick Wagner song unlistenable and get away without a comment I can almost guarantee it (...but wait, isn't this a TIM CURRY song that Dick Wagner happens to be playing on?...) !!! So anyway, yeah, You have to be a Curry fan to really appreciate the vocals on this. Ironically enough, though, I think this would have received some AOR airplay at the time if Curry sang it the way Joe does and left out the "f-bomb"
This entire album is genius. When I discovered it, I truly felt I had come upon a secret cave with treasure nobody knew about except me. This song is the jewel in the crown.
Absolutely..its great songwriting. And theres a reason that fans complained loudly when he left it out of a set a month or so ago and he added it back as the first encore. But there's also a reason nobody would ever associate Tim Curry with it, especially after hearing him sing it! Its borderline unlistenable.
JB kicks the snot out of this song & made it his own no question. Saying that, without the Tim Curry original, there would be no debate as the song wouldn't exist. Let's thank Curry for this unquestionable masterpiece instead of debating who's version is the best ffs.

my favourite of all Tim songs
I love Tim's voice...
I like this version better, there's so much more emotion in this version of the song x
Tim does more then just justice to this song, he's actually make love with the melody and the lyrics are penetrate my ears with sheer pleasure!
It’s his song, bro 😎

I love Tim Curry's work so much.
Tim Curry is GOD!
I didn't think it was possible, but I love Tim Curry even more now. Such an amazing voice!
wow... this is so depressing.... describes how I feel, not bad.
Great job by Dick Wagner on the guitar...super emotional lyric matched by a great tone.

Joe Bonamassa's Sloe Gin is great indeed, but Curry is all voice and emotion! I really love it!
for sure, i personally prefer listening to Joe's but in this version you can hear a more authentic desperation in his voice

Dick Wagner played lead guitar. The man is a genius!
I'll admit I'm one of those people who came here after listening to Joe Bonamassa's version first. I like them both.
Agree, miles better than the watered down Joey B version!
We had better hope that none of us feel this for real..although some of us have, I know-great guitar playing
Really reflects the pain that we all go through in heartbreak and loneliness, best song ever imo
I just discovered this song today. And..it's one of the best songs I've ever heard. Wow..I never knew Tim could sound like this...it's amazing.
Love this song, I can listen to it all day. JB does a great version, with obviously better guitar, but the emotion in Curry's voice is awesome.
This original is way nicer than Bonamassa. Tim Curry's voice is amazing, and Bonamassa sounds like Kermit. Xx
Maestro Dick Wagner on Guitar
Glad I found this searching for who wrote the Bonamassa cover. An interesting change of pace.
Sort of a Lou Reed sound. Great studio band.
With a touch of Leonard. :-)
The guitarist on this track is Lou Reed's!
turns out "so fucking lonely" carries more emotional weight than "so damn lonely"
Great singing and guitar playing, far better than the other version which people seem to be talking about.
Solo is way better... But Curry's voice is heartpearcing

bonamassas talent on the guitar is extraordinary, but this version sounds much more syncere, true, feelling.
feeling over technique ANY day of the week for me. not a fan of Jocks with Guitar chops myself....no offense to the Joe Bolognamassa's out there
I love Joe Bonamassa's version, too, but I've known this one since I was a kid and I have to say, Bob Kulick's solos are absolutely mesmerizing.

Because Joe killed it.

Yea,no
You guy`s know that this is the original version? I love it!
Badass shit! Love it! ..
the deferens joe from tim! is that tim takes it very in personally
I agree on the writing/cover thing. Bob is an amazing "demon" producer ;)
Wagner is wagner, Bonamassa is Bonamassa! :)
If you handed Bonamassa an old cracked garden shovel he'd sand that thing down to a toothpick. Way too smooth for the subject matter.
Thank you....he thought it was wild that we even listened to the album! To quote him..." it was popular in Japan, I guess."
Thank you! I have been looking for this for ages. Was one of my favorite songs in the 80s. I could not find it anywhere!!!
Hadn't checked the original til today. Dick Wagner FTW
Joe's song is good. this has a raw edge that Joe has never had
Heard the JoeB version first and love the guitars but Tim definitely sings this better
only so many great songs and this is one of them.
I've heard all of Joe's stuff. He's never been very rough or raw.
The brilliant Dick Wagner on the howling and heartfelt guitars.
Sloe Gin is a fucking masterpiece. Curry opened the door, Smokin' Joe slammed it shut.
I love both versions.
where did you get this song? i cant find it on itunes
I love this song used to have it but can't find it anymore :(
My favorite, listened to Read My Lips tape until I wore it out. Love you Tim, always will!!!
This entire album is genius. When I discovered it, I truly felt I had come upon a secret cave with treasure nobody knew about except me. This song is the jewel in the crown.
Awesome cut, all the best to Tim with his current health crisis.
