  • During week 6 of the 1985 NFL season, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trailing the Los Angeles Rams by four points with under 2 minutes left, the Bucs, for some reason, decided to punt the ball away to the Rams, essentially conceding defeat to them. Obviously and unsurprisingly, this decision backfired. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

Longtime Bucs fan here. This is the kind of foolishness I saw as a little kid growing up here in Tampa. It makes me wonder how I remained a Bucs fan throughout my childhood! As for that disaster of a 1985 season, the defense was bad, but it wasn't responsible for all the points given up. The offense turned the ball over quite a bit and they had given up a few pick-6s through the Rams loss, which had 2 of them by itself. The Bucs' defense was fine in this game. Bennett's defense of the decision to punt was so baffling that even CBS' commentators (play-by-play announcer Jim Hill and color analyst John Dockery) immediately questioned it.

Bill Walsh removed Steve DeBerg as the starter for the 49ers (thus giving the Bucs a chance to make him their starter) with the line "I'd hate to have my coaching career depend on Steve DeBerg."

Thank goodness he lasted only 2 seasons here. That was easily the worst 2-year stretch the Bucs had since the late '70s. I think a video about Bennett's time here would need to be well over 30 minutes long! LOL

I'd like one where the bad decision isn't exactly bad, just completely headscratching, in that it seems more difficult than the alternative for virtually the same result, but..

Taking an intentional safety would have made more sense as well. The resulting free kick would probably have put the Rams in worse field position than they had on the punt. If they get the 3 and out then they would have better position after the Rams' punt. Either way (4 point or 6 point deficit) a TD gives you the lead.

you can also do an onside free kick. Not easy, but its still better.

Couple of Fun Facts. #1, as my beloved Cards are apt to do, they not only were the Bucs first victim that season but the Bucs, with the 2nd worst defense in all of football, shut us out. Mind you, this is the Cardinals with OJ Anderson, Neil Lomax, Stump Mitchell, JT Smith, & Roy Green(who was injured for this game). #2, Steve Young was on this Bucs team.

Let’s spin out the alternate scenario. The Buccaneers go for it and don’t get any yards. The Rams get the ball back and kick the field goal. The Bucs then drive for a touchdown, but miss the extra point. The game ends that way, with the score Rams 34, Bucs 33. That was the score of their game the year before.

On that list of coaches who did well with their first team but failed miserably with their second, I would add Dick Nolan of the 49ers in the early ‘70’s. With SF - going to the NFC Championship twice - then with the Saints... well, weren’t those the “Aints”?
