Also RIP David Lindley, the amazing multi instrumentalist that added so much depth to all the early Jackson Browne albums. His solos on These Days (from Browne's 2nd LP) make me cry every time I listen. Master of the Lap Steel.
A rock guitar legend passed in June , how could you possibly forget Tony Mcphee...
The only important player I got up close to, signed my Best Of The Groundhogs CD. Sad.
I love how you have presented this; respectful, knowledgeable, illuminating and not overly sentimental. Thank you.
I appreciate that!
Hey Andy, great tribute, although @2:24 you mention the passing of Robbie Bachman as "the" Bachman in Bachman-Turner Overdrive. He was the drummer, but he was one of three Bachman brothers who played in that band, the most famous of whom was Randy, the guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and former key member of the Guess Who. Fortunately Randy is still with us and still touring!
Don't forget Kevin (Geordie) Walker of Killing Joke. Maybe not your cup of tea, but one of the great post-punk bands, and Geordie's guitar stylings are incredible.
Andy, you missed Johnny Fean who died in April aged 71. Johnny was the lead guitarist for the band that invented Celtic Rock/Prog i.e. the legendary Irish band, Horslips. They influenced both U2 and The Pogues as well as many other Irish bands. Such a brilliant guitarist but also had a magnificent voice and was an amazing composer. You need to go back and listen to Horslips' albums, particularly the Prog classics, The Tain and The Book Of Invasions. RIP Johnny Fean.
Floyd 0:37 Sneed, drummer for that hit machine Three Dog Night. Singer/songwriters: Gordon Lightfoot, Sixto Rodriguez and Linda Lewis (5 octaves) - her backing of Terry Reid with David Lindley at Glastonbury in about 1971 is pretty amazing. Randy Meisner, Topol. Alan White on drums with Terry Reid.
Jesse Gress died in February. Guitar player with Todd Rundgren and Tony Levin Band. He published a large amount of transcription portfolios of major artists.
Thanks for pointing that out
It’s very sad.
A wonderful guy.
A wonderful player.
RIP Peter Brotzmann legendary saxophonist and artist with a discography second to none.
An even worse year than 2016 when you add in other household names that we've lost. Thanks Andy. Hope you have a better 2024. You're putting up some real quality on the channel and I think many of us really enjoy it.
Very much agreed.
I never thought any year could compete with the Musical Massacre of 2016. Those losses were just staggering -- it seemed like a major musical figure died every week and two members of Jefferson Airplane died the SAME DAY, but I think 2023 certainly gives it a run for its money. And this year has been huge year for overall losses, especially sports figures.
One of the best white soul singers to ever grace the planet, Australian Renee Geyer. Much in demand on the USA session scene (Sting, Joe Cocker, Chaka Khan), while her albums had no chart impact despite players like James Jameson and Tower of Power. Very successful in Australia. Her version of Its a Man's World (1975) is definitive.
Also in December, 'Uncle Meat', Essra Mohawk, aka Sandy Hurvitz. Her 1970 album Primordial Lovers was once rated by Rolling Stone as No.25 on its all time list.
"Almost cut my hair" what a song, definitely my favorite. Great vibe!
Denny Laine also performed as a member of The Moody Blues in the mid sixties
Just to clarify: Dennys Lane was not a member of the Idle Race. That was Jeff Lynne's (ELO) first band. Bev Bevan and Denny played in the Diplomats, where they dyed their hair blonde. Later, Bev went and joined Roy Wood in the Move. That's all.
Thank you Andy, this is great service to the community. I personally appreciate your sentiments and to all who have past on, Rest In Peace.
Thanks for mentioning Peter Brötzmann. In a more linguistic way, he has always been the example I chose to explain the difference between acklowledgement and appreciation to my German country fellowmen who are used to call it "Würdigng" either way.
Nice ! Very generous pause in time to remember and make a tribute to those whom should never be forgotten and in most cases still appreciated Thank you !
Nicely done, but (at least for me) omitting the biggest loss of 2023, the great singer/songwriter GORDON LIGHTFOOT, about whom Bob Dylan said: he died “without ever having made a bad song”, and every time he listened to one of them, he “wished it would last forever”...
I so love how you ramble you research so well I love checking you out and you know so much about everyone a true talent merry Christmas 😊
Quite a bit of character and courage it takes to review these things and put them out there.
Fine review. ⭐️
thanks Andy
My pleasure
There’s a lot of work there you’ve lots of … yeah maybe 2023 wasn’t good for you not sure but I’ll take your word for it happy new year
You are erudite and your knowledge is a deep well spring. Thank you…I’m still pissy about beloved Jeff Beck.
Last Exit; RSJ was the drummer. Sonny Sharrock was the guitarist. Beck was an absolute giant. Marshall is one of my top 10 greatest drummers. He had such a natural swing; never out of place.
Me Mum saw Butch Miles back in the '60s. Still, by far, her favorite drummer- she's 84 now. She also saw the original Brubeck Quartet as well, and is also very fond of Joe Morello. She said they led him physically, hand in hand, to the drum set- his eyes being apparently that bad....
🚬😎👍
Fantastic re-cap of all the great idols of ours that are sadly passing. I genuinely miss the Great Late 20th Century music, my God. Love your channel, you keep the dream alive, we cannot lose the vast wealth of knowledge from the music of the late 20th century that has to offer and be added to the classics of all ages. Happy New Year!!!
April 7, 2023 the magisterial Edward "Kidd" Jordan, educator, philanthropist, master musician, free jazz champion, friend, crossed over. One of the legendary heavy-weights of the avant garde from New Orleans, he was our mentor, our guru, and our big buddy. He was feted in France with a knighthood. Farewell, maestro, if slightly belatedly in Andy's comment section. :)
Simple Minds - Street Fighting Years starts with John Giblin's double bass...
Another sterling video Andy. I hope that the fact that your videos bring me much joy, brings you some joy. Hope that 2024 can bring some positive light through the difficult cracks in the wall of shite that's all around! (excuse my strange metaphor) ... much love y'all, be well one and all
Richard Davis also played bass on Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.
Thank you Andy, happy new year!
Same to you!
Jim Gordon actually plagiarized the piano coda to Layla from his onetime girlfriend, Rita Coolidge.
I’m glad someone mentioned this, genius drummer maybe but he sure was mean to Rita
Still can’t believe Clapton has not yet corrected the songwriting credit for Rita Coolidge’s Coda for Layla. I’m not a Clapton basher (love his music and always will) but it’s time to give credit where it’s long overdue.
Geordie Walker from Killing Joke. Mark Stewart and John Waddington from The Pop Group as well. Guess I'm never seeing them play live then.
Thanks for this Andy, and thanks especially for introducing me to Carla Bley via your earlier tribute to her and whose work I am now, far too late, starting to appreciate.
My pleasure!
Bert, Beck and Crosby , were major influences in my early development, along with Jack Bruce. Sad to lose Pete Brown, who's lyrics scrambled my brain and still do, upon reflection. I became an instant Cream fan because of Eric. It didn't take long for me to work out who the real genius of the band was. I still do " Theme from an imaginary western" , alongside Pressed Rat and Warthog ( Thanks Ginger ). Kids today think i'm a 70 year old weirdo, when i play that haha.
Another Irish Musician who also sadly passed away in 2023 was Christy Dignam (the Voice of an Angel), of the band Aslan.
Aslan, unfortunately, never really managed to garner the success outside of Ireland, as they did within it.
Aslan had a brief moment of a promising escalation to international stardom from the mid to late '80s (getting signed to EMI for over 1 Million Pound, touring the U.S., etc.). But, the opium trail left by Christy was a big kibosh in the magnificentation of Aslan, and Christy was unfortunately fired from Aslan.
Christy did rejoin Aslan again four years later, but the second coming of Aslan very much contained itself within the island of Ireland. But, Aslan was very successful in Ireland, and very much Christy and Aslan are household names in Ireland.
In Ireland the passing of Christy, Sinéad and Shane has been dubbed as "The Unholy Trinity"...
Christy, Sinéad & Shane R.I.P.
2023 the year Irish Music died
.
Some recommend Christy and Aslan stuff worthy of a check out --
Aslan - This Is
Finbar Furey & Christy Dignam - Green Fields Of France | Absolute superb version of the the Irish Trad. Song
Christy Dignam & Imelda May - Song For Kathryn
Aslan - Crazy World
➕ The Unholy Trinity ➕
Shane R.I.P. Had the Measure of Our Dreams
Sinéad R.I.P. Nobody Compared to You
Christy R.I.P. The Voice of an Angel
.
Quite a feat.Very tastefully done.Thank you.
Andy, throughout this entire video you are rocking backward and forward, this is clearly causing you pain. As it is the rest of us.
Lady Gaga also worked with Tony Bennet and their two albums are very good.
Re Brian Godding - check out the album 'Brain Damage' by Solid Gold Cadillac (Mike Westbrook) and various small and large size groups led by Mike Westbrook. Godding also co-led ( with Chris Biscoe, Tony Marsh and Marcio Mattos ) a group called 'Full Monte' which played free jazz.
I was waiting for you to say Chick Corea but it turns out he died in February 2021, that's nearly 3 years ago. Where does the time go !. This was an interesting snapshot of those musicians who have died in 2023 and obviously well-researched so thanks Andy.
Thanks Andy
Happy New Year 2024
Happy new year!
Bernie was such a great singer too, taking a lead on the first three Whitesnake albums, Not quite Coverdale level but very credible and a lovely tone. Guitar playing was of course great too.
Pete Brown was of course the lyricist for Cream, not Free. Nevertheless, thanks for reminding us of so much talent lost this year. For me personally, Jeff Beck was the greatest loss, and so unexpected.
Fantastic job on this list Andy! I am in agreement with you about the passing of Tina Turner. When you consider in the 80s alone, she appeared on stage with the likes of Eric Clapton, Bryan Adams, Rolling Stones, Mark Knophler as well as her own career and then add in her body of work from the 60s. There was very little fanfare!!
Moody Blues.
I believe it was Hugh McCracken who played with George Michael. Hugh Burns played one of my top 10 guitar solos, "Baker Street."
BYW love your work it’s awesome
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for this, Andy.
Peace... ☝️😎
You seem to have a penchant for jazz bass players. Bad year for bassists.
Not sure how you missed Randy Meisner, bass player for The Eagles. died the same day as Sinead O'Connor.
I saw Butch Miles with Plas Johnson and Wild Bill Davis in the late 80ties and he was amazing, the other two as well naturally.
Nice one Andy!
One way or another
this darkness got to give
It will , I think you get how odd it is to be counting the dead artists in one year , I don't recall this being a topic for podcasts in the past , maybe the 60s 27 club , MP Andrew Bridgen had a debate in Westminster 18.12.23 at 1630hrs asking valid questions about excess death globally , Matt le tissier Southampton FC footballer is asking questions about sports people having sudden bad health and worse , you quoted the gd speedway boogie I'll add hot tuna genesis- and then we walked into the day , skies of blue had turned to grey , I might have nothing clear to say , I never looked away ❤️💪☮️
@@mickyates9154 You get it. Now let's just wait for the inevitable pile-on by the Jab Police.
This sad List is not Fun but a Work of giving Honors to People who made our Live better.
What about Randy Meisner??? I know his death was announced on the same day as Sinead O'Connor, but that's no reason to ignore him! A brilliant bassist, vocalist and founder member of the Eagles, Poco and Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band. Disappointed...
Also Gordon Lightfoot at 83.
💟🖤🤍 Good Video Man....
Linda Lewis RIP ❤
i wonder how many it is that took the ¤%&, who took the cytotoxic juice
Well,
Keef is still alive!
I saw butch live too with count Basie
Er but that wasn't a photo of Francis Monkman. Doh! (No Geordie?!! 😮).
yeah indeed, a whole era has been going to fade away. 😞 on the other side, it's a natural and usual thing.
And I am not frightened of dying
Any time will do, I don't mind
Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime
But, like Woody Allen, I don't want to be there when it happens.
Who's next and I don't mean the title of the album. December-22-2023
Looks like Tony Oxley as well :(
Yes... a genius drummer
Were any of them age 27?
Eye died a few times this year, if we're talking dog ears
I’m sorry just st asking what do you play?
drums
Barrett Strong.. composer of Money (that's what I want) was probably the first 'recorded' victim of berry gordy.. who cheated him out the royalties by removing Barrett's name when registering the composer of Motown's first single(which gordy refused to release just in case it failed to chart, so he licenced it to another company.. gordy the evil bastard..
Just imagine how many millions that one song made.. It was covered by so many and sold extremely well each time.
I.metBrotzmann at Cal Arts in 1980
wow
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer he was the loudest sax player ive ever seen live... Louis Moholo &Hans Reichel were also there in residence( for about a week i believe)
David Šuligoj
