  • I was fortunate to get a ride in the brake van at the 2024 Spring Steam Gala at the Watercress Line giving me an opportunity to obtain a different view of the line. LSWR S15 No.506 was at the head of the train, whilst a small number of fortunate passengers rode in the Queen Mary Brake Van. The crew of the brake van kindly allowed me to attached a couple of cameras to their van. Please join me to see the route from the rear of the demonstration freight train.

Hi Tim! Today the camera is travelling on the fourth class👍 (we say: Bremserhaus). The fifth class would then be the buffer, grins 😊. Best regards from the Mühlviertel and Cheers 🍻🇦🇹.

Hello Hans, it was fun riding in the Guards Van. I worked up a thirst, by the end of the trip, I needed a beer 🍻 Cheers. Tim.

Hi, I really enjoyed riding the Guards Van, as far as I know the Mid Hants is the only railway to offer this over the full length of the line at special event days when the demonstration freight is in action.

Nice change Tim. I really enjoyed the ride including passing through Ripley non-stop.
I’ll be over again in September, so hopefully we can catch up again. Will keep in contact via email when I have sorted out my itinerary.
Cheers from a cold and damp Menzies Creek. Puf’n-Pete

Hello Peter, it’s nice to hear from you. It was cold at the Mid Hants for this Gala, but at least the rain held off for the day. Riding the guards van is novel and a great way to see the line from a different perspective. I was at the Bluebell Railway today for their Branch Line Gala, so different from last week at the Mid Hants, it was sunny and almost too hot, hopefully summer has arrived. I've got a trip to Italy booked later this month with Great Rail, it was Karen's choice, it will be more of a holiday than train chasing. I've got my eye on a couple of trips, one to Portugal with PTG and another with RTC to India. Hopefully I'll be in the country for some or all of your time in the UK and it goes without saying that it would be nice to meet up again. I hope it warms up for you Menzies Creek. All the best. Tim.

Brilliant! Thank you for this innovative view and emphasis on the whole of the line.
Worth more than the sections normally seen.

You must have witnessed some interesting events during your time as a freight guard, did you ever work over the Mid Hants when it was still part of the national network? I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I joined BR in 1975, just too late to work over the Alps, but was able to work freight trains to various yards in North
and East London, Banbury, Langley, Old Oak Common, Dean Hill, Salisbury, Chichester, Fratton, Southampton Docks, Fawley, Poole, Hamworthy Goods, Wimborne, Furzebrook, Dorchester and Weymouth Quay. Some of the turns involved brake vans because not all the wagons were vacuum or air fitted, or because the train had to set back into a yard and needed eyes at the leading end of the movement. It was a good time on the whole.

@@catwalkin-im7yp I started work in 1972 as a toolmaker and my first year was spent at Chichester College, I remember one day cycling home past the yards and to my surprise there was a Warship class locomotive at the head of a mail train. I lived within earshot of Chichester freight yard and I used to go to sleep to the sound of freight trains being remarshalled. The list of yards you worked trains to reads like a list of all the places I'd love to have visited when pickup freights were still an everyday event. My first ride on a goods train was to Lavant with a sugar beet train, I wish I'd had a camera back then. Thanks for sharing some of your memories. Cheers. Tim.
