I feel like the day I discovered EXO I completely went down the rabbit hole and it's one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
There's something about their music and their voices that’s just so special
I seriously get overwhelmed if I think too hard about how high the quality of their music is - they are my ultimate favorite group because their songs make me feel ways I never feel with other groups and singers.
They were the first group I really fell hard for and they’ve stuck with me since I found them! They’re on another level and ,in my opinion, have one of the most varied and high quality discographys in kpop
There’s something for everyone in exo’s discography, and i love the different genres they can all pull off. I love how it feels like all of their solos and subunits have their own distinction, you can’t mistake any of their music for each other.
They have almost all genre’s covered combined with different vocal styles and techniques, and harmonies also not to mention their amazing transitions in their songs
What sets EXO apart for me is definitely their group harmonies and B-sides. No one does group harmonies like them and they have a really diverse and extremely good vocal range.It's so easy to tell who is who
EXO also has one of the most impressive vocal lines in kpop. You just can't go too wrong with voices like that.

As you are starting to see, everything SM does is connected to EXO's storyline like one giant graphic novel or mystery movie series. Each new MV or project that is created is like another chapter in SM's SM Culture Universe. And "Monster" is another piece of that story.
"Monster" was released in 2016, so there are 9 members in this MV.
EXO debuted in 2012, and in order to really understand EXO you need to start from the very beginning and watch both of their "Mama" MVs -- EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) versions. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them.
Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents.
So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us.
As the English lines in "Monster" say ... They're "Creeping, Creeping Creeping .... Creeping in your heart babe" "You can call me Monster (because) I'm creeping in your heart babe." "She got me goin' crazy." The song's called "Monster," so the words are about acting like a monster: "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... i'm sorry, you make me sooo craaaazzzy, you know you dooooo."
So the floating watch and the car that is on fire in reverse, etc., I think was -- on top of being a metaphor in the story -- also supposed to be the members using their superpowers. And the snake, like a monster, mirrors the beat of the song, which kind of slithers like a snake as a metaphor for the way the guy slithers in and out of the relationship stealing warmth and affection from the girl, but in the end, leaving her cold and alone like a cold-blooded snake, etc.
However, the lyrics of the song have very little to do with the story in the MV. You should look up an English translation of the lyrics. Because the lyrics tell a different story than the story in the MV. In the song the members are talking about a girl and they are telling the girl that "You can call me Monster" because I know I am bad for you and I will ruin you. I know that when we are over that I will have destroyed everything that is good about you, but I don't care because I want you so much that it doesn't matter to me. But the MV is about EXO's origin story and about the fact that they have come to Earth on a mission.
Also, the majority of the choreography for "Monster" has to do with the members using their powers, so when/if you watch the dance practice and/or watch a live performance, if you know what you are looking for, you will see that each move is done for a very specific reason.
The X they make to represent EXO is only the beginning of the story in their choreography. Every move of the choreography has been designed to be an extension of their story and it uses elements of their dance to represent several of the members using their powers. For example, D.O. has the power of super strength, so during his part in the song and choreography you will see that he waves his hands and the other members are pushed away from him or pulled toward him. When you see Suho in the middle of the group and they have a hold of his arms, he rotates his body around like swirling water because Suho has the power to control water. Xiumin has the power to control snow/ice/frost, so during one part of the choreography you will see that each of the members pause as if frozen as he moves in front of them. Sehun has the power to control wind, so during his parts, you will see the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm. And the part where they are sitting on the ground is supposed to represent a sundial -- EXO gets their power from the eclipse and their powers are affected by planetary and solar phenomenon, so the sundial is meant to represent the passing of time and their connection to the sun.
You should also make note that "Lotto" is a prequel to "Monster," so when you watch "Lotto," just keep in mind that what you saw happen in "Monster" is what is going to take place after or in conjunction with the events in "Lotto".
How "Monster" and "Lotto" tie into EXOs larger storyline is a little open ended, but because "Lotto" is thought to be the prequel to "Monster," I think the story starts out in "Lotto" where the members have somehow infiltrated this big gambling ring and are undercover as they work to uncover a clue or something they need in order to accomplish their tasks here on Earth. I think the underground gambling establishment is run by a gang of bad guys who are probably members of the Red Force.
"Lotto" is where we are introduced to a girl who is being held captive. And ultimately, I think what EXO are trying to do is rescue the girl from the Red Force, but they are trying to do it without blowing their cover or being found out. So, that's why you see in "Lotto," and continued in "Monster," the members are fighting against the police because the police have come in to take down the gambling ring and rescue the girl, which is also what EXO are trying to do. However, the members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. EXO are supposed to be going about their tasks here on Earth incognito, and humanity is never supposed to find out that EXO are other-worldly beings, so they are trying to keep a low profile.
As we see in the end of "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape from the back of the police van before they are taken to jail and/or captured by the Red Force, etc.
You also see Lay crouched in the middle of what looks like a pile of people -- I'm not sure whether these are the FBI agents, or if these are members of the Red Force -- and I think he is checking to make sure they are OK and possibly trying to use his power of healing to fix things and heal the injured.
Because some theories believe that EXO are traveling between time periods and dimensions, I think in "Monster" they also might be showing how some of the members are arriving on scene at different moments in the timeline of events that are taking place in the MV -- the members don't necessarily arrive at the location together -- as explained in their Pathcode teaser videos leading up to their "Call Me Baby" comeback. For instance, in "Monster" you also see Kai standing on or near a giant pile of people as well, and he seems to be standing over them. Some have pointed to this as possibly showing evil X-EXO Kai -- Kai's alter ego clone that was created by the Red Forced and introduced in EXO's "Obsession" MV -- who has done something bad, but I think this may be showing good EXO Kai, who has just shown up at that moment, observing what has taken place. Because Kai has the power of teleportation he is the one that is in charge of bringing the members together and traveling between time and space, so I think he has shown up from a different time or place and is now trying to figure out what has happened, etc.
In EXO's "Obsession" MV the members in the bright colored clothing with the crazy makeup and hair are supposed to be X-EXO and the ones in the black or dark colored clothing are supposed to be EXO. So, in the parts where they are dressed in all black in "Monster" I think this is showing EXO, and where you see them in the clothing with red accents, this might by showing X-EXO. At the time when "Monster" was first released, we had no idea about X-EXO's existence, but since "Obsession", we have started to go back and reanalyze some of their older MVs, and it appears that what we thought was always EXO, may have been in fact X-EXO some of the time.
As you can see, EXO's story is always evolving and changing, and just when you think you have one part understood, SM introduces a new piece of the story and changes the direction of the narrative.
Also pay attention to when you see red and blue light. As mentioned, in EXO's MVs when you see red light this is where the Red Force has control, and when you see blue light this is where EXO has the upperhand. However, if you see purple light this is when EXO and the Red Force are battling for control -- red and blue mixed together make purple.
Unfortunately, as you can see, what makes EXO's storyline even more difficult to follow is the fact that nothing is ever in chronological order. So you really have to pay close attention to every detail, to even begin to make connections.
Jeeeeeeez this is soooooo much to take in. I imagine SM have a war room dedicated to mapping out this story and all these ideas haha. Are there any videos dedicated to these storylines that I can maybe watch? And have the members themselves ever publicly spoken about this stuff?
@@marcogennuso There are concept guides by Cesar Oh that help to explain some of the storyline, ruclips.net/video/-XuZr-ZwoIw/видео.html, but because SM has never confirmed or denied any of our theories or explained anything we are never sure if what we think is happening is really true. Plus, because the storyline is not in chronological order we often discover after SM releases a new video that what we thought was happening is not exactly correct and we have to revamp our theories.
No, none of the members or any of SM's artists have every really talked about the storylines. It's all supposed to be a mystery so I don't think they aren't really allowed to say much. For several years the EXO members hardly even participated in variety shows or anything that wasn't created by SM because they had to maintain their mysterious ora. SM has since loosened up now that the members are all almost 30 and have gained enough notoriety, etc. so people understand what they can and can't talk about on shows. Which is why a lot of people complain about how SM never promotes EXO in the same way that we see most idols being promoted. (You just have to come to understand and accept that EXO does things different than everyone else, but they still manage to be just a popular and maintain one of the stop spots in the industry, so maybe we don't need to question SM's methods.)
It's said that when someone joins SM and debuts, they are given a book to help explain the storyline so far and explain their role and character within the story. And with every new project they get another script. However, several SM idols have said that the story is so complex and extensive that they have never sat down and read the whole story beyond knowing what their role is at that specific moment for whatever project they are working on at the time.
Rumor has it that Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) has been thinking about this storyline and plot since the 1970s when he was a singer himself, and he was just waiting for the perfect timing to have the right mix of idols and trainees to be the characters in his story.
I mean the whole thing is so complex that several of EXO's comeback dates and album release dates are timed to coincide with when eclipse and other planetary and solar phenomenon take place. I mean literally everything is designed to connect to the SM Culture Universe. It even extends to live stages in concerts and concert VCRs, etc. I mean it's extensive.

One theory is that "Love Me Right" is showing the members in all different dimensions or time periods throughout history so that is why you see EXO in so many different scenes in this MV. As aliens from Planet Exo, it is thought that the members of EXO are able to travel throughout history and time and space in their quest to reunite as a group and to find the Tree of Life. So, each scene you see is thought to be in a different location or time period -- or possibly, part of a dream-like existence, created by the Red Force to trap the members within the maze, like we see in their "Overdose" MV. (So if EXO are still trapped in the maze, some of the scenes are also thought to be them fighting to break free from the fog that the Red Force has them in and escape, etc.)
Some say "Love Me Right" establishes how EXO are traveling through history looking for the Red Force and trying to fix all the problems that the Red Force has caused, while they search for the Tree of Life. That is why we see them in so many different scenes in the MV and why each scene looks like it is from a different time period.
You see the red light because, as with everything EXO does, red represents the Red Force. So some theories are that the scenes with the red light are scenes where the Red Force has control, and the scenes where you see the blue light are when EXO has the upperhand. And the scenes where you see the purple colors are times when the line is blurred and EXO and the Red Force are crossing paths -- red and blue mixed together make purple. Also since we now have more information about X-EXO, which are EXO's alter ego clones, who were introduced in EXO's "Obsession" MV, some new theories are starting to suggest that maybe the red scenes are actually the X-EXO clones and the blue scenes are the EXO members.
And, although the smoke looks pink, I think we are supposed to recognize it as red smoke, which is another indication that whatever is causing the smoke has something to do with the Red Force. Some theories even think that scene might be connected to EXO's "Lucky One" MV storyline. In "Lucky One" we see the Red Force experimenting on EXO and, in the EXO-M version, Xiumin is trapped in a box filled with smoke or fog. In "Love Me Right" we see Xiumin doing some sort of experiment in the room with the red smoke.
At one point you see Xiumin mixing some sort of purple liquid and, although I am not sure what he is making or why, some theories speculate that that potion is created from flowers. And flowers are a central theme in almost all of EXO's MVs. You see Xiumin mixing a similar liquid with flowers in EXO-CBX's "Blooming Day" MV. Also, because this liquid is purple, I think it could potentially be some sort of potion that will help the EXO members break the spell the Red Force has over them or it will help to identify who are the real EXO members and who are the evil X-EXO alter ego clones in disguise, etc.
The smashed TV is also thought to be connected to EXO's "Coming Over" MV storyline. In "Coming Over" you see EXO smashing TVs, mirrors, and surveillance cameras, in what is thought to be an attempt at stopping and preventing the Red Force from controlling humanity. And in EXO-CBX's MV for "Hey Mama" you will see that the CBX members have now infiltrated a TV news studio and they are working to stop the Red Force from controlling the news anchors and corrupting society by controlling the flow of news, etc.
Some have pointed out that the smashed TVs look like running water. Water is Suho's superpower and fire is Chanyeol's power. And you see Suho and Chanyeol in that scene. So, Suho and Chanyeol are most likely involved with whatever is happening in this scene.
The scene where you see Baekhyun laying on the train tracks could possibly be connected to the storyline in EXO-CBX's "Horololo" MV where we see Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin searching the train tracks for clues. (It also now could be connected to SuperM's storyline in their "100" MV, SHINee Key's solo debut "One of Those Nights" MV, aespa's "Black Mamba" storyline, SHINee's "Don't Call Me" MV storyline, Kai's solo debut storyline, and Baekhyun's "Bambi" MV storyline, etc.)
And the scene where you see Xiumin laying on the ground, almost as if he is passed out, in the middle of the forest looks as though it is connected to Suho's "Call Me Baby" pathcode teaser video storyline, as well as the scenes with Suho in the forest in EXO's "For Life" MV.
To really understand what might be going on in this MV you pretty much have to pause the MV at every scene and really analyze what is happening in each frame. And, although I have watched this MV numerous times, because it is so complex, I still have no idea what most of the MV is trying to tell us.
Although I am not sure what the marbles mean, I know they are somehow connected to EXO's "Call Me Baby" pathcode teaser videos -- and more specifically D.O.'s teaser -- where we see D.O. with marbles, and SM specifically points out that we need to pay attention to the marbles to solve the riddle. And we see a newer reference to the mables in EXO's most recent MV for "Don't Fight the Feeling."
As you can see, everything EXO does is connected to their concept and storyline and it's all about the fact that they are fighting the Red Force and searching for the Tree of Life. And because EXO are trying to undo everything and stop the Red Force from corrupting humanity, the Red Force is always standing in EXO's way, trying to stop them from accomplishing their tasks and prevent them from reuniting the two halves of the Tree of LIfe in order to prevent peace from being restored in the world.
And the story continues in every MV.
But what makes their storyline even more complicated is that nothing is in chronological order, so you really have to pay attention to even the most minute of details to figure out where each MV or each scene within an MV might fit within EXO's larger storyline.
And the storyline even continues with the choreography. If you watch their dance practice video, you might notice that there are several dance moves where it could be interpreted as some of the members using their powers. For example, D.O. waves his arms and the rest of the membres are pulled toward him or pushes away from him. D.O. has the power of earth/force which gives him strength. I also see the gliding movements representing how the members are traveling across time and place as they fight to regain control from the Red Force, etc.
"Love Me Right" was released in June 2015 -- Kris and Luhan left the group in 2014 and Tao left around April 2015 -- so this was the first MV where there are 9 members. From now on, if you are going in order of release date, you will see 9, 8 or 6 members depending on how recent the MV is.
To really appreciate their vocals and dancing, you should also see "Love Me Right" live. Check out a comeback stage or one of their live concert videos, even if it's just on your own time. :D
Welcome to the supremely talented and experimental EXO. How many other groups would have the courage to put an a cappella section in a title song? They can and do pull off virtually every genre going, there is no one else of their calibre out there. As a Kpop boy group, they have a huge number of young girl fans, but from their debut it was clear they would be more mature. If the music and visuals are not enough, they also have one of the most complex concepts that adds another level to following them. So much to enjoy - welcome!

Found your channel while looking for exo reactions! First I wanna say loved the reaction. Second I like to comment to discuss what you say in the video and leave my thoughts. And sometimes they’re really long 😅.
While it’s true that the obsession chorus is more rnb and is not quite the explosion that occurs in most kpop choruses, the song certainly has dynamics. It slows down and builds and even climaxes and comes back down. Imo the verses are definitely the high points for me more than the chorus but my favorite part is when it slows down at the bridge and builds during the last chorus culminating in an explosion of vocals towards the end with Chen Suho and Baekhyun.
I do agree that Monster is catchier than Obsession. Monster is definitely more non-Korean friendly than obsession and this is probably because the hook is in English which makes it instantly more recognizable. It can also be argued that the hook for obsession is the constant I want you I want you parts cause that was instantly in my head when I first heard it.
Rather than inconsistent I like to think that rather they consistently do different things well. No matter what they do it’s executed well even if it might not be your favorite song, they will not come out with a bad song in my opinion. Obsession is maybe the prime example of them defying the boundaries of what a “normal” song structure is and you’re right it’s harder to catch on on the first listen but I guarantee you the more you listen to it the better it gets.

Hey Marco, I just love hearing Monster, Love Shot, Obsession, Tempo, Lotto & Love Me Right on repeat! I kinda know the dance moves for Monster, Love Shot already but I gotta learn Obsession, Tempo, Lotto, and Love Me Right now. The way Kai, Sehun, Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, and Chanyeol do this choreography is just the 6 of them!! Obsession's backstory is: One of their exes tries to get them back but EXO is done being in toxic relationships (about time), "You’ll never have me again (I don’t think so), Shut up and go away." The way that Kai has control to do that move is unbelievable!! Chen's way to do that high/long note sitting down is insane!! Chanyeol & Sehun as the rappers are amazing definitely in the way that they both do it in their songs!! Monster is unbelievable because I definitely can't get over the choreography in the song!! The way that Chen does that high/long note before Chanyeol and Sehun do their little rapping area is insane!! I didn't know that the backstory for Monster was: They've escaped in Lucky One but don't know where to go and their addiction to their last girl is driving them crazy "I hated you, But I want you." The song tempo is like unbelievable definitely the dancing!! Tempo's backstory is: Can you believe it? They found their new love and ask her not to mess up their tempo because of the hardships they had before. The little autotune they do to Xiumin & Baekhyun's voices for a quick second or verses is insane!! The backstory for Lotto is: Because of their bitterness from their last girl "We’re going crazy, my lucky lady," they decide to make up for that by gambling (maybe a stretch) but decide there's nothing left to do, especially since their "pressed down instincts are popping up." The way that Sehun has a little "sexy" moment to himself is insane!! I just feel like the girl in this song betrays them a little at the end of the song. The dance break in Lotto is just amazing because they are in sync with each other. Love Me Right's backstory is: Their relationship is going well " Everything is special, we look good together." But they also miss their home far away, so they reference the galaxy, the milky way, and the universe. The different sets that they used in Love Me Right are amazing!!! the outfits in this song are always amazing to me definitely the football gear!! The high/long note from D.O. and Baekhyun are incredible!!! The members dancing on the football field with the gear on is insane!! I didn't know the backstory to Love Shot was: The lyrics express the feelings of someone who hopes to find the meaning of true love that is slowly being forgotten in a desolate world and stay together. The outfits for the song love shot are incredible!! Definitely, the way they show their body whenever they're in suits! I really don't know how they can even dance in suits!

Fan theories believe that "Lotto" is the prequel to "Monster." "Monster" is from EXO's EX'Act album and "Lotto" is from their EX'Act repackaged album, which came out in 2016. So, to understand the story in "Lotto" and "Monster" you have to connect the two storylines. How I interpret things is that the story starts in "Lotto" as EXO goes undercover and works to take down the gambling ring, which is thought to probably be run by the Red Force, and now that we know about EXO's clones, from their "Obsession" storyline, maybe even X-EXO are involved.
Fun fact: Kai -- EXO-K's main dancer -- isn't dancing in the "Lotto" MV. As you saw, Lay -- EXO-M's main dancer -- and Sehun -- EXO-K's other main dancer -- are the dancers highlighted in "Lotto." Kai was injured during this time and couldn't dance, which is why you see him sitting down in the MV.
In live performances at this time, Kai is absent when Lay is part of the performance because he is still recovering. However, when Kai is back performing the song, Lay was absent because he was busy doing solo activities in China.
If you watch any live TV network performances of "Lotto" you might also notice that they change the title of the song to "Louder" and the lyrics are changed to use the word louder instead of lotto as well. Gambling is illegal in Korea and it's one of those things that are banned from being talked about in mainstream media. So in order to make the song TV- and radio-friendly they had to change everything to "Louder."
I think the two stories in both "Lotto" and "Monster" actually overlap. I think both MVs take place in the same location and around the same time frame, and in each MV you see the members in different moments as they try to destroy everything to do with this gambling ring. You see them breaking everything in both MVs and you see them smash the car in "Lotto" and in "Monster" you see the car has now been set on fire, and they burn the money and other things in "Lotto" as well, etc.
At the end of "Lotto" you see the police or FBI have come in and are just starting to take the members into custody, but if you remember in "Monster" it shows all the members have now been arrested. So I see it as the fight starts in "Lotto" and continues in "Monster." At the end of "Monster" all the members were now in custody and Baekhyun rescues them as he releases them from the back of the police van allowing them to escape, etc.
The birds you see in the cage are roosters -- cock fighting roosters to be exact -- and they are another form of gambling. And the dogs are probably guard dogs like what criminal enterprises use as part of their security to deter someone from causing trouble or wanting to rob them, etc. The dogs are thought to be part of the Red Forces' security efforts. Don't worry, SM and EXO don't like animal cruelty either, that's the whole point they are trying to make. It's just another form of evil that comes with gambling.
Also remember, in the "Obsession" MV we see EXO are the members in all black and X-EXO are the members in the colorful outfits with the crazy makeup and hair. So, if you notice, in "Monster" the members are all in black for part of the MV (In "Monster" we also see EXO in black and red outfits, which we have now started to think is supposed to be X-EXO in those scenes because of the red on their outfits), and in "Lotto" they are pretty much in black or dark neutral colors, so that is why I think the story is being depicted from EXO's point of view.
You also may notice that in "Monster," and in parts of "Lotto," Chanyeol has red hair. But at the end of "Lotto" when he is being arrested, he has blond hair. I think this also might mean that the Chanyeol with red hair is his X-EXO clone, while the blond Chanyeol is the good EXO member who is undercover, trying to accomplish his tasks here on Earth and help the girl, etc.
So, in "Lotto" and "Monster" I think what we are watching are the EXO members trying to take down X-EXO and the Red Force and stop the evil and corruption that the Red Force is inflicting on the world which is depicted here as corruption through illegal gambling.
We are not really sure what the girl takes from Chanyeol at the end of "Lotto", but it definitely wasn't money. If you pay attention to the lyrics, one of the English lines is, "I don't need no money." That is why they burn the huge stack of cash. Most theories agree that the currency that EXO values the most is flowers. There is an overwhelming use of flowers in many of their MVs, and as you see in "Love Shot," for example, they aren't collecting money but flowers. And in EXO-CBX's "Hey Mama" and "Blooming Day" and in EXO's "Love Me Right", etc. you see them with flowers.
My theory is that the girl is somehow connected to EXO's quest to find and protect the Tree of Life and that is why at the end of "Lotto" you see her secretly take something -- which if you pause the MV and zoom in, you will see looks like a small video tape -- to somehow help them in their quest. The video tape is thought to be the video that D.O. is filming with the camcorder in the middle of "Lotto." It's still unclear at this point how the girl fits in the storyline, but I think, or at least I hope, that in the future we will discover more about her and what significance she has within the story.
As mentioned before, some say the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs -- like in "Lotto" -- is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more.
It's been more than 5 years since "Lotto" came out and I have seen the MV dozens of times, and each time I watch it I still see something different and am still working to unravel more clues. But "Lotto" and "Monster" are the two EXO MVs that have me the most confused. I'm still struggling to really grasp the full story those MVs are trying to tell. I think part of the reason why I find these two MVs so confusing, is the fact that they depart the most from the linear storyline and the story jumps back and forth between the two MVs so much that it's difficult to put the events in order to really make a clear picture.
The rapper handsome one is Sehun and the orbes rapper handsome is Chanyeol but hes more tall , Sehun is main dancer like Kai ❤️

What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters -- there are only 6 people in this MV.)
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and it is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop and it has made us question everything we have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline.
The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc.
Since "Obsession" some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovering that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs. So it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, EXO has gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- EXO, Taemin/SHINee, NCT/WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force and maybe eventually take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in EXO's MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)

You're missing out on a lot 😌 EXO are Kpop Legends and they are known as the Vocal Kings. The one you pointed out in Obsession & Monster is Chen. "Golden Throat", one of the best vocalists in Kpop. He's also a solo artist. Obsession chorus is R&B, EXO are known for their unique R&B style. That last part in Tempo is actually Acapella, and the producer said only EXO can pull that song off!

I first got acquainted with K*pop a year ago... I think the difference between K*pop and other music is in the dance. K*pop is famous for its dances. When I got to know K*pop, I first watched the music video and K*pop dance is attractive to me. And the next step was to look at the meaning of that song and if the meaning and dance of that music was good, I would listen to that music... until I met E*xo. For me, E*xo is music without subtitles, which means I don't need to know the meaning. I don't have their lyrics, I just enjoy listening to their beautiful voice and wonderful music. Whenever I want to see K*pop or listen to it, I listen to other groups' music or watch other groups' music videos. But whenever I want to listen to really good music, I only listen to E*XO.
E*XO has everything I like and expect from a very good music. E*XO dances very well and skillfully. E*XO has meaningful and beautiful music. E*XO has the best and most important characteristic of a singer group, which is the ability to sing. E*XO has the 8 best singers in K*orea. The 8 best vocalists in the history of K*pop. 8 vocalists and rappers. That means all the members can rap in addition to vocals. The power of the notes and the magical voice of E*XO members is not in any group. When they start singing, I am with myself. I say, are they really normal people? How can they sing so well and powerfully? It's as if they are extraterrestrial with a voice that comes from heaven.
E*XO can perform live music in such a way that you scream with excitement and surprise. They sing so strong and well that recently they protested to them not to perform live music so much and not to show off your good voice. In addition to singing, they are actors. The song is called "Tempo" and the album is named Don't Mess Up My Tempo, so, the tempo keeps speeding up and slowing down. I think the change in tempo is also supposed to mirror the uncertainty and unsteadiness that EXO are feeling within the storyline in the MV.
However, if you read the lyrics, you see that the song is talking to a girl and they are telling her, "Don't mess up my tempo." And yes, part of the tempo in the song is created by the squeak of what is thought to be bed springs . (The underlying theme of the song is a tongue and cheek reference to sexual innuendo.) However, as with everything EXO does, there are duel meanings depending on how deeply you want to interpret the song and MV. On the surface the song and MV is meant to be enjoyed by the casual watcher and listener like you would any song on the radio, but if you want to delve in deeper and explore EXO's storyline, then there is so much more going on.
As an SM Entertainment group, it shouldn't be a surprise that EXO are amazing vocalists -- hence the a capella part in the song. That is just what SM is known for. You can't be an SM artist without having amazing vocals and dance skills. That's just a fact about the type of people SM selects to become part of its company. All of SM's artists were first chosen for their visuals, vocals and/or dance skills, and even the rappers get intense training as vocalists. That is why SM is known as the vocal powerhouse of the industry. And EXO is a perfect example of that.
The aesthetic of the "Tempo" MV is centered around the color red because the setting is supposed to be depicting the members under the Red Forces' control. Without going into too much detail -- there is so much going on in EXO's "Tempo" MV that it's hard to grasp it all -- what fan theories think is happening in "Tempo" is it is showing the members of EXO all trapped in separate dimensions. Each of those rooms, could possibly be a different dimension and that is why you see the glitches and why you hear Xiumin and Baekhyun with that computerized voice, because they aren't all in the same place at the same time, so their voices are being distorted as they try to connect between dimensions, etc.
They also still could be trapped in different rooms within the maze, like what we saw them in their "Overdose" MV. For several of EXO's MVs we believe they are still trapped within the maze and they are continuously trying to find their way out. The maze seems to affect their connection to their powers and it clouds their minds and dulls their senses, so not only are they fighting the Red Force and X-EXO, but they are also struggling to break free from the fog the Red Force has them in. That's why you see some of the members just lazily sitting around and kind of blankly staring off into space at times.
Baekhyun is the one that is singled out in the MV and he is the one standing above everything looking down, so this is one example of where we think that maybe he is the only one who has avoided the Red Force's control and he is observing everything that is going on from the outside.
You see Chanyeol -- main rapper -- being interrogated by Chen with the inkblot test and that is thought to be the members trying to figure out who are the real EXO members and who are the evil X-EXO members created by the Red Force -- or who are the real members and who are the clones. At this point everyone is suspicious of each other and no one can be trusted.
As you may have noticed, halfway through the MV Chanyeol's eyes and hair change color, so some think that this is either showing two different versions of Chanyeol who appear in two different time periods or dimensions, or one is Chanyeol the EXO member and one is Chanyeol the X-EXO clone. Often, when you see a character in one of SM's MVs with blue eyes or different eye colors this usually means they are not who they appear to be.
The "Chess game" is thought to be supernatural EXO chess, and I don't think it's a game they are playing, but I think maybe it's something they are using to try to decipher a clue or figure out a way out of wherever the Red Force has them trapped at the moment. It's unclear right now what that scene is really telling us, but I have a feeling things will become clearer in the future as more of EXO's storyline is unveiled in future MVs and as SM's SM Culture Universe storyline continues to evolve.
You also see Sehun -- the other main rapper -- on the motorcycle in this MV, which I now think is connected to the scene where we see him driving a motorcycle in EXO's "Lightsaber" MV and sitting on the motorcycle in their new "Don't Fight the Feeling" MV.
In the very last scene, that is Baekhyun with that cube. I am not sure what that means, but I am sure it's foreshadowing something to come in the future with EXO's storyline.
EXO's Chinese member, Lay, is in this MV, but you won't see or hear him sing or dance because you watched the Korean version, and at this time, because of the political issues between China and Korea, the Chinese government only gave him permission to appear in the Korean version of "Tempo", but he wasn't allowed to participate in the song. If you want to hear Lay sing you will have to watch the Mandarin version.
Nothing in this MV is random or done just because, even the smallest of detail has been planned out to either connect to something to do with EXO's storyline from past MVs or it will become a key part to help explain something in one of their future MVs.

@@marcogennuso I'm not really sure. I know there are twitter accounts and things where people discuss these things, but I don't really follow them.
I mostly just search "theories behind XXX video" and look for a blog or website where someone has posted their explanation of what they think is happening, and when I find someone with a theory I think makes most sense and is universally accepted by fans who follow SM's storyline, I take that information and add it to what I think is happening.
Maybe you could post a comment on your channel or ask for suggestions in a video. I'm sure there are others who know more than me.
My understanding of SM's storyline has developed mostly over years of just following SM artist and groups. I have been a Kpop fan since 2006 and SM groups were the first few groups I started to follow. So, I've just accumulated a lot of useful useless knowledge over time.
