    I m Chinese and 50 yrs ago My parents could barely have enough food to eat. It was like North Korea. Now we have 5G, largest network of high speed trains, cashless society , Mercedes and BMW everywhere on streets, luxury malls filled with brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci. And have one of the strongest military in the world. Our rovers are on the moon, our Tiangong space station is on the orbit. Our aircraft carrier groups are patrolling at the sea. It’s been day and night difference in 50 yrs. We are forever thankful to our great leader Dengxiao Ping

  • @mrhdebater1607
    @mrhdebater1607 2 месяца назад

    China's challenge was overcoming the aftermath of 150 years of foreign invasions and world wars with 450 million in severe poverty. No country on earth could have done better than China to overcome those challenges (see India), and it was inevitable that it would one day overcome them and modernise itself into the 21st century. Deng saw many countries including Mongolia, Turkistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore etc. None of them were models for China, however Deng was interested in the relationships between these countries and the west, and he knew that China could one day become a manufacturing powerhouse, just like it was in the past.

But I guess it's a case of America's fear, such as their fear of the German/Russian collaboration, that Chinese/Japanese collaboration would result in such great economic wealth for these 2 countries that the US and west would have been irrelevant long ago.

      This is impossible. If China wants to become rich, it must compete with the United States for the market, which also means that China and the United States are rivals. Japan and South Korea have become colonies of the United States, relying on American aid to become developed countries because the country understands that small armies are weak and the United States can manipulate them at will. China is too big, and becoming a developed country will inevitably lead to the decline of the United States.

    I believe the TRIP that Deng Xiaoping took that inspired him to make China modern was his trip to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore because in Singapore he met Lee Kuan Yew. As Singapore's PM, Lee Kuan Yew transformed Singapore from a 3rd world country to a major economic one... in one generation. Deng was so impressed because he didn't expect to see Singapore to be so well developed. Deng asked Lee, "How did you do it?" Lee said, "I governed on the basis that Man works for himself and family first... then for the community." When Deng went back to China, HE SENT THOUSANDS OF HIS GOV'T OFFICALS TO SINGAPORE with instruction, "Learn as much as you can about Singapore and bring back what we can use." President Xi Jinping may have been one of them. But that's why China is what it is today. Thankyou Lee Kuan Yew... for showing China the way.

    I think DXP's visit to Singapore was what transformed China, although the Japan visit may have some reinforcement of what he saw of Singapore's development. LKY told Deng that if Singapore whose population are largely peasants from southern China can develop so rapidly, so can China who has a huge pool of talent. Right after the visit, China embarked on the Special Economic Zones on the coastal cities as mini Singapores as experiments. Singapore even sent its Deputy Prime Minister to China as consultant. Since then, China sends scores of mayors to Singapore each year to study its management and public policies.

    • @jt6231

    • @mrhdebater1607
      @mrhdebater1607 2 месяца назад +2

      Not quite, China already had Shanghai which was more developed than Singapore. Even LKY admitted that had he been in China instead of Singapore, he couldn't have done much. All the Chinese leaders were pivotal in getting hundreds of millions to move forward in developing China and lifting themselves out of poverty. Deng's key strategies was electing some cities to become economic zones like Shanghai that centred on mass production of goods for worldwide exports, Singapore didn't do that, it was just a shipping port that managed trading routes.

    • @PhiloSurfer
      @PhiloSurfer 2 месяца назад +2

      @@mrhdebater1607 Shanghai in the 70s is nowhere near Singapore. Yes, nobody, not even LKY can develop this huge China in one go. Which is where Singapore comes in - do it in digestible chunks. Do it by cities instead of by country of province. Let's why the pioneering efforts were in the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in the coastal cities. When proven workable, it was expanding to other cities. This is still a work in progress given the China is so huge. As we speak, it is beginning to spread to the less develop western regions. Nobody is denying all Chinese and all Chinese leaders were involved in developing China. All I am saying is that Singapore shows that it can be done by dividing China into many little Singapores. DXP actually said - learn from Singapore. As we speak, hundreds of mayors from China are coming to the Nanyang Technological University each year to study Singapore's urban planning, public policy and governance.

    • @mrhdebater1607
      @mrhdebater1607 2 месяца назад

      @@PhiloSurfer Shanghai was a prosperous economic hub and port long before Singapore was founded! China also had a railway network before Singapore. This is one of the oldest countries in the world we're talking about, and twice the most powerful economy in history, and you think that China only became successful because of Singapore??? Yes China was sanctioned and undergoing massive internal issues such as severe poverty of hundreds of millions of people. Singapore had just a couple of millions mostly from Malaysia and ports left over from the British administration. Singapore did not experience economic growth until Japan and China started to mass produce goods for the rest of the world. Singapore did not do much manufacturing. When China opened up in the 80s, it made HK and Singapore hugely prosperous as trading ports, not manufacturing powerhouses. See the key difference? Singapore did try its hands at manufacturing, particularly in electronics but it would never match the productivity of Japan, South Korean, Taiwan and Shenzhen/Shanghai etc. Its best bet is shipping and banking, just like HK. If Thailand does create a canal for ships to cut through Thailand instead of Singapore, then Singapore is finished. China has bilateral relations with nearly every country around the world, and has learned and traded with nearly everyone of them. Singapore isn't the massive influence on China that you think it is.
      Last point, yes Singapore has a much smaller population than even a minor Chinese province. It is ridiculous to assume that China could have transformed one of its smaller cities to emulate Singapore, China could easily have moved all its powerhouse companies and the richest people in China to Xiamen to set an impossible standard that perhaps no country will ever meet, see what I did there? China's long history and huge diversity is why regions are what they are and why hundreds of millions can't just pick up and move elsewhere like in Singapore. It is a massive disservice to compare to China when Singapore is basically a city state that got rich being part of a trading route to China and east Asia.

    I thought it was quite the opposite. What Deng learned really from the economic model of Singapore when he visited with his 18 delegates in November 1978, then Senior Vice-Premier of the People's Republic of China. Deng Xiaoping made his first and only official visit to Singapore - the last stop on his three-nation tour of Southeast Asia that included Thailand and Malaysia. He launched the economic reform immediately after he met with Singapore's founder and visionary nation-builder Lee Kuan Yew. He, indeed, enlarged the scale of the Singapore model provided.

    • @BordersLess
      @BordersLess  3 месяца назад +23

      I agree Singapore was a massive influence. Deng stopped by Singapore earlier as a teenager on the way to France and he was astounded by the transformation when he revisited in 1978. Even LKY said the joint Singapore-China projects (like the Suzhou Industrial Park in 1994) fostered significant goodwill between the two nations.
      However, Japan's contributions are not often talked about. I was surprised about Japan's many early investments and partnerships with China just as they were opening up during the 70s & 80s (plus Official Development Assistance aid totalling US$20 billion) until I did more research.
      Additionally, out of the three China Reform Friendship Medallists from Asia, two were from Japan (Matsushita & Ohira) and one was from Singapore (LKY).
