I have a 14SZ that ran flawlessly for 40 years. Just changed plug, oil, air filter, cleaned carb, and replaced blade. Ran a couple hours, started back firing, came to a stop, and now will not start. Might backfire once when starting but will not run. Getting spark and gas. I’m completely baffled. Love the mower.
Consumer Reports rated this as their top pick for lawn mowers in 1994 when I bought this same mower. 24 years on, it still looks great and performs great. I added a mulching blade as opposed to the plate and carry out minimal maintenance. I also don't have the oil filter but the Kawasaki engine has been bullet proof.
Just bought one for $20. It has the bag. I have to replace the shift cable. ($12). I'm cleaning the carb, tank and replacing the fuel line. And new oil, of course. That's it. Very happy.
Nice ride. I bought mine on a GovDeals auction from the University of Virginia for $35. It included the side shoot, bag, mulch and about 10 blades. It's in outstanding condition, but needs the self propelled fixed on one side and new tires. I took it to the James River JDD and for $65 they did a complete tune up with fluid changes and made me a list of the two or three things that would need fixed if I wanted it restored. The guy that worked on mine used to have two or three of them so he knew exactly what to do. These beasts are awesome. Thanks for showing us your mower.
Bought my 14SB in 1996 with the optional oil filter and bag for $760 including tax. The price seemed exorbitant at the time but it's really paid off in the long run. I've replaced the blade, wheels, belt and cables, but that's to be expected over this length of time. Kawasaki made a fantastic engine for these things, and the only trouble I've had is rough running when I was using old crappy ethanol gas. You do have to occasionally adjust the belt tension for the self-propel feature when it won't engage at all the settings. I hope to us mine as long as I can keep mowing myself.
i have the exact mower 1 crank every time blade brake was bad took it apart it comes apart i 2 piecess i weilded the two clutch plated dis 2 circles on both plates to build it up works perfect that noise is the blade brake wearing out not gonna last longj
I have 2 of these that both still run like a dream. I love the blade clutch feature - it makes me mad/sad that so many modern mowers do not have this feature (with Honda, you need to get into the models that cost $800+!). It's so great to be able to slow-idle the motor while you empty the bag instead of restarting it every freaking time!
I'm here because we just bought one the other day from a neighbor who was moving and didn't need the mower and we were in need of one he then approached us and gave us an offer of $80 we took it
I got one for $90.00 at the Hillsdale, Michigan Auction.2015..... i love it ... starts right up with only 1-2 pulls (im 5'2" 110 lb) im just trying to find a video on how to change the oil.....
I bought mine from a UVA auction and took it to my local JD Dealer and they charged me $65 and changed out the gas, oil and fixed everything (tightened up loose things, etc). I'm not sure what the costs are in the Hillsdale area, but I got a nice tune up/fluid change and advice from the guys and that was well worth the investment. Good Luck.
Did you get the oil changed ok? It's super easy-there is a drain spout at the rear, carb side of the engine...use a paper towel roll cut in half or make a drain tube to be able to drain it into your pan...get the oil warm (drain it after mowing)...refill with recommended oil (I use 5w-30 synthetic...you could use 10w-30 or 30w)...don't over fill...change it every 50hrs (probably 2-3seasons for most homeowners...easy enough to do seasonally along with sharpening the blades)
Your probably spot on with the age! The 4.5 hp models were produced 1989-1992, followed by 5.0 hp from 1993-1994, and then 5.5 hp 1995-1997 when they changed to the JX75 with a green deck. Honestly, the horsepower difference is minimal. I've had 2, a 1989 14SB and a 1994 14SB which still runs If you want, I can find out the exact date of manufacturing for you. All I need is the production code and serial number, then I can get the exact month and year from my friend on my lawnmower forum. The black handle bars are definitely newer than the rest of the unit as those were changed from chrome in 1995.
Hi Mark, I have a SB14 as well and purchased mine in March of 1992. It still works but my self propel is not working and it is a boogie pushing. If you did a section on fixing self propel cable or whatever it would be greatly appreciated.
What is the cable going into the belt cover, the blade clutch cable? I am looking at a cheap 14SB but it is missing that cable, don't know what it goes to or what it would take to replace/
I have this model and have since probably 1994. It has never had anything done to it. Just started to have problems with it staying running. Still starts on first pull. Self propelled stuck on #4..works for me. Being a female I know nothing about it. Daughters boyfriend is going to look at it for me. It has ran like a Deere. Sure hope he can fix me up.
You can probably fix it. Hopefully you know what you are doing; I certainly don't. The one for $250 sold right away so it must have been flawless. Wish I had grabbed it.
I have a lawn business and use just a 21 inch mower. I have to buy a new mower every year; that's about how long they all last but I have an old Honda that is similar to this what you have and that one has been the most dependable. Could just need a new or rebuilt carburetor. You got yourself a fine mower. I do about 40 lawns per week so I definitely need a commercial mower. The older ones just seem better.
Steve Percoco. I got one.for FREE.OT RUNS WORKS AND EVERYTHING.all I had to replace a leaking gasket that was spilling gas on the deck.I put lucas oil in it.I might of made a mistake.someone out there want one.I haven't ran it with the lucas cause its Sunday and dealership.closed.what's the recommended oil?price? Someone is selling this for $100 but the self propel feature doesnt work (ie its now a push mower!). What are the proapects of fixing the gear box to self propel?
They still hold there value in great shape hmmm 4 to 700$ and really crappy shape 75 to 100 Look at mine 33 yrs old and dam near mint ill ask 700$ for mine ruclips.net/video/kLJIhLvzb68/видео.html
Can someone please tell me how to get the grass to go into the bag once attached? I put the bag on but the grass still shoots out the bottom. Help please lol
I just picked one of these up for $100 bucks today. Mine makes that same noise when the blade is not enabled. It goes away when blade engaged, just like yours. Is that normal for these? My JX75 didn't make that noise. If it's normal, I'm not going to worry about it.
The 14SB - the best mower ever made. Parts are expensive. Pay the money. Mine has mowed my large lawn for 28 years. The noise is probably the bearing in the clutch - not normal.
The noise you hear is the BBC's bearings. They are worn out. Solution is a new BBC which can be expensive. Around my area that is usually why these mowers get thrown aside. This one has an Ogura BBC because it is a 1989 or early 1990. 14SB's beginning in late 1992 through JX75 2003 models had a Warner BBC that had replaceable bearings. I usually say bite the bullet and replace the Ogura BBC and put the Warner on so you can service it more easily.

Wow, I bought one in the 80’s….. wish I still had it. Best push mower I ever owned….. think I bought it in 85….

How much oil does this old hog take?
I got a 95 model for $2.50. Runs like a dream and everything works on it.
I have just found one by the dumpster and fix it up and it works great
Bought one last year at a. Garage sale for 50bucks runs great!
Just an FYI your clutch bearing is screaming and needs to be replaced before it fails. I have that same mower and its whisper quiet.
Clutch is no longer available, I've looked everywhere. If you find one, let me know, thanks.

Got me one today. No screw on filter or bag.
I’m going to definitely check out my local John Deere. 🙏🏻

I bought a JD 14SE in 1993. It was over 900.00.
@@johnweaver1198 It was really expensive, I got the B and S model for 500 14 PZ.
I bought my 14SZ in 1994 for 500 and still starts on the 1st pull. Will be 30 years old in 2024.
I'm here because we just bought one the other day from a neighbor who was moving and didn't need the mower and we were in need of one he then approached us and gave us an offer of $80 we took it

Nice lawnmower I have the 14PZ Anniversary model.

Under the black back cover that swings up, pull out the mulching insert (may be wedged in there). This threw me off too!

Blade adapter from 14 St will allow you to get rid of the PITA clutch.
Does anyone know what causes the mower drive to just stop propelling the mower? You tip it on one side or the other and it will start working again.
