    When I was a young fellow, I took a summer job working for a fly by night jack of all trades. We did house painting, building destruction and construction, that sort of thing. He was long on work and short on pay, in fact we usually had to get our dads involved to get a check out of the skinflint, but I did manage to save up a few bucks. Much of my money went for smokes, cause it was so cool to smoke back then, but I did set aside enough to buy a pair of Midland walky talky's and man we had fun with those, my best buddy and I used them all over the place, we were still young enough to play soldier and stuff like that (the child labor laws were rather scant back then.) So those toys were great. However being an electronics nut, it wasn't long before I had them apart, trying to make them do stuff that they shouldn't do, and eventually breaking first one, then the other. Ah but they were fun while they lasted.

    Iceo is the collector-emitter leakage current with the base open circuit and
    Ices is the collector-emitter leakage current with the base shorted to the emitter.
    Iceo will generally be much larger than Ices because the collector-base leakage current flows back into the base and is amplified by the gain of the transistor so to turn a bipolar transistor off thoroughly you need to put a low impedance across the base-emitter.

    Heads-up on that boost converter - the China ones seem to, without exception, be input limited. I.e, the 20 A is going to be the maximum primary current it can handle. Which makes sense, since its maximum voltage is rated at 60 V, giving a maximum power of 1,2 kW. At 12 V, it's only rated to do a measly 240 W.

    • @m4xwellmurd3r
      @m4xwellmurd3r 8 лет назад

      It'll do a bit more than 240 if you can keep it cool. I was able to push it to nearly 30 amps (maximum my powersupply could handle)
      Also, they've revised the design since this video. It now comes with the connectors for the input side, a low voltage cut off adjustment pot, and instead of multiple small mosfets, it uses a single fet on the input, 2 standard size fets AND one giant fet on the output. It actually does VERY well at high loads in my testing, and the inductor coil doesn't ring like the 600w model does. It also has two 15amp fuses vs 2 20amp fuses

    Thanks for the demo of the multi tester. I went to eBay and did a search and immediately bang good's listing came up. I was reading about it and when I saw it had capacitor testing (measuring also the capacitors loss) as well as inductor/ inductance testing I was sold. $22 AUD with free shipping seemed pretty good even if it only lasts a year or so.

  • @SteelBlueVision

    That boost converter in your hands has a terrible flaw. If you power it up with say 19 V and then turn it off after the output voltage reaches the set limit (say 83 volts for example) with no load connected, it will cause the red led (LED1, I believe which I think is a low power indicator) to come on from that point on. That is, the next time you power it back up the unit becomes useless - it only supplies a voltage equal to the line voltage at its inputs regardless of what the voltage adjustment trimmer is set to.
    See if your unit suffers from this flaw and I will tell you how to fix it.

    Interesting items Julian, please keep up the great work. For the component tester, ICE0 is a test for collector emitter current with the base open cct. Likewise ICEs is the same but the base emitter are shorted. It appears the resolution for these measurements cannot show the leakage current.

    I'm not sure I would trust that boost converter with anything important or expensive. I've seen some of these cheaper converters surge way past the set voltage on start up and destroy electronics. I would also like to see how well these perform at both low and high current draw. Temperature, ripple, noise, etc. I don't trust a lot of these companies' claims of power output and 1200W is a lot. Don't burn down your house! ;-P
    Those component testers seem to be quite annoying with the auto power off "feature". Why they couldn't make it an option jumper or setting to extend the time out time I don't know. Most people won't be using these in the field but actually indoors where AC power is available so why not just put on a power jack and let it stay on continuous (until you unplug it or switch it) or at least have a 5 minute timer or something. Very annoying if you are trying to write the data down or whatever.

  • @amtpdb1
    @amtpdb1 8 лет назад

    Some of the component testers can be updated. I purchased one on ebay but am not sure about doing the update. I was wondering if you might consider doing a video showing the significance of the output numbers and call outs given by it. Just learning these things and don't understand these.
    Thanks

      +Rob B Some you can adjust the power down in the menu. But there are like a zillion versions of these and the firmware in all of them varies. AFAIK the graphical ones are not user updatable either. They don't take very long to test a component. Especially considering you do not have to observe any polarity at all connecting components to them.

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  8 лет назад

      +Luc Peeters You can't really put a web server on a dynamic IP address. I'm not really sure how the P2P system works yet - it may be that this works without needing to know the camera's IP address - and if the camera is uploading only (FTP for example) it could be set to DHCP. Also, there may be a utility on the CD to find the camera and alter its settings. Lots to play with here :)

    • @Luke-san
      @Luke-san 8 лет назад

      +Colin Keevil. I have a couple of Linksys, Cisco cameras here and a Foscam. None of them were set to a fixed IP (range). Normally you can use the DNS name of the thing depending of your network config to get access to your camera if you don't know the IP, but then it has to be in the same range and have the dns server address set correctly..
      I had to help loads of people who are not network savvy with these fixed IP delivered things. It's also a bit of a nuisance to put your pc on a fixed ip and then change the config.(especially on the phone)

    • @Luke-san
      @Luke-san 8 лет назад

      +Julian Ilett Looking fwd to the unscrewing thing part maybe a couple of nice screenshots of what kind of image it really produces. I have seen a couple of HD cams which look worse than 320x240 as a matter of speech and are useless in case of an event.
      Well the fixed ip. They could put it as DHCP first and then you should be able to set it to static ip after you configured it. Would make it a lot easier for a lot of people.
      All my fixed ip 'server' stuff here is set in between 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.99 and my DHCP server in the router hands out addresses above that.

    Hi Julian, I have had one of the QD900 cameras for about 3 weeks. I could not get the IE software to do motion record, the manual record works OK in short bursts but I left it on over night (8pm till 8am) and the 20 gig file would not play back ? The CMS software on the disk is not much better. However after a bit of a search I found some open source s/w called Ispy (www.ispyconnect.com) and it works quite well. If you manage to get the included s/w to record on motion detect please do let us know how with another of you great videos.

The down side is that it records in a strange format that will only play with the included player not something like VLC or WMP.

      Playing a bit more with this and mine will not go below 2.7Amps? Is it me or are the specs
      wrong for this item? I tried 2 55W car bulbs in series on the output. Set the voltage anywhere
      between 13.8 and 24V, Pulling the current down it just wont go below 2.7Amps, where the
      voltage drops to slightly lower than the battery input voltage.
      Must be me right? Thanks.

    • @m4xwellmurd3r
      @m4xwellmurd3r 7 лет назад

      two 55w car bulbs in series will draw about 2.3amps at 12v, of course you can't go below your input voltage, but it looks like it's working correctly. You're gonna have to try testing it with a much lower load than 55w car bulbs. (which are pulling about 27w of power at 12v)
      You're gonna have to go down to the 10w range before you start being able to limit the current below that 2.7amps your seeing.
      It sounds like you're actually lowering the output to the point that it's shutting off the boost circuit effectively.

      +chop98 I live in Mexico. My experience has been that the products arrive about a month after ordering. The packaging is sparse but adequate. The components (mostly led drivers and lights) are of very good quality. The prices are good. I recommend this company.

      Thank you, Man. I'm waiting for a first small shipment to arrive. Looking forward to inspecting the goodies. :)

    Julian,
    The camera has a value of about $50.
    All you did was play around in an apparently random manner.
    What I think most viewers would prefer is a reasonabaly thorough evaluation showing strengths & weaknesses.
    Noone wants to spend that amount & get a poorly designed or poor performance device

    Talk about retro, I bid on 3 CB radios on www.stealitback.com and got the lot for 4 bucks plus 15 shipping, not bad for a rather nice radioshack 40 channel mobile unit for my RV, as well as another 40 channel Cobra hand held CB with rubber ducky antenna, and a very retro looking 3 channel hand held CB with the classic expendable antenna that pulls WAAAAAAAAAAAY out, it looks every part the walkie talkie with padding around the speaker and mouthpiece, all mounted in silver plastic with just channel 14 installed. She takes the old crystals for different frequencies but I don't think I will ever install any more even though they are still available on Ebay, I probably will never turn that one on. Both the hand-held take AA batteries, handfuls I think 8 or 9, I just plugged in a 12 volt power pack to them to try them out and they work fantastically. I even sat down and converted 50 feet of old TV Cable into a 103 inch doublet antenna which I intend to mount on the next sunny day when I can get to the lumber yard for some PVC Piping to finish my project.

    Useless trivia alert:
    Antenna uses an SMA connector.

    Always enjoy your video's! BUT when it comes to reading Induction's, these are useless!!
    Most of the time it will report 'unknown'
    Unless you have some other device in mind; it looks like I'll have to buy a PEAK.
