      Best cpu you can get for x79 is the 2696v2, has a 3.2ghz all core boost and 12 cores to boot for 110 off of aliexpress. Dont know why you said that the x79 has a limitation of 10 cores...
      This is being sent from a 1650v2 6c 12th @4.3ghz (not even a hard OC, ive seen people with a 4.7ghz OC with this cpu on this exact board) system with 40gb of ram in 2x4gb and 2x16gb config in quad channel 1866 cl10 ECC and a cheapo Jengsha x79m motherboard I got for 66 bucks. Just gotta know what boards have a Russian bios you can slap on them to get better performance/better OC. And with x99, you cannot forget Miconst's channel, who has literally everything you could ever want to know about the Chinese motherboards, and the legendary x99 all core turbo bug.
      also, you can get the 1650v3 ES that has OC for 46 bucks on aliexpress, so if you want x99 OC that is an option too. Same with the 1660v3 being 130 bucks on Ebay, as its essentially a 1680v2 but with better ipc and heat output. Hopefully soon servers will stop using the 1691v3 and 1681v3 and we could see them on the used market, 10 and 14 core overclockable xeons would be nice to see for "budget" enthusiasts.

    In all honesty, the chinese motherboards do not have very good quality control, they are not built do last. I've had 2 X79 Turbo PlexHD v1.03, one of them the socket is already giving up on me, it boots if I use a hairdryer on the back of the socket a few minutes in. The other one the USB3 doesn't work. VRM is also questionable, there is only 1 low side mosfet per phase, a 1650 can BSOD due to VRM thermals on a significant workload, measured above 100C on open bench using Aida FPU. Overall it's still a choice to be considered for those willing to take the risk or play with overseas. The 2620v3 seems like a better choice as it doesn't need a whole lotta of vrm and performa decently with all core turbo unlock bios. I would just avoid more expensive motherboards like F8 though, my experience has not been good with Chinese boards and I would not spend as much on a "high end" Chinese board, the VRM on them is pretty similar and they have the same issues.

    • @fewik8567
      @fewik8567 4 года назад +2

      But they are a cheap board, if it last just six months in a way you'd made your money worth while, actual x79 boards are stupidly priced, clearly not worth it, there are a few ok quality boards out there, mine gave me error code 19 which is as far as I can tell just unlucky, mainstream branded x79 boards would occasionally get this code and they just got a replacement, my board is just a display piece now

    • @nathangamble125
      @nathangamble125 4 года назад

      "I would just avoid more expensive motherboards like F8 though"
      Why? According to most reviews, the F8 is pretty good. The X79 Turbo PlexHD is a crap board even when compared to other bottom-of-the-barrel Chinese X79 motherboards, and a lot of reviews report similar problems with it (and its "Atermiter" rebrands), while most other chinese X79 motherboards from machinist, jingsha and huananzi get much better reviews. Kllisre and alzenit are not great, but still get better reviews than Atermiter/PlexHD.

    Hey Oz, I am a new viewer and am really coming to enjoy your channel and your personal style. I think you're every bit as "Zen" as AMD's processors. It makes me happy that anyone can be as chill as you appear to be, these days.
    I do have to take slight issue with your recommendation for the best CPU to use on X79, specifically for gaming. You went with the E5-1650, while I would heavily lean toward the E5-1660. I've owned both before, and the 1660 actually makes a significant difference in performance, due mostly to the extra 3MB of L3 cache, but also slightly higher clock speed. I don't have an X79 board anymore, but at the time I did and was trying a few different processors, the price difference between the 1650 and 1650 was on ten or fifteen bucks for a solid upgrade. I LOVED my Xeon E5-1660!
    Anyway, that's my two cents. Keep up with the enjoyable videos!

    Hey Oz, I'm running the 420 motherboard, it's inside my Z420 workstation I picked up in February. One of the options you may have missed is that the Xeons can address quad channel memory. I have 32GB with 8GB in each channel. Also the Xeon E5-16xxV1/V2/V3 are unlocked. I use the Intel Extreme Utility to run my E5-1650V2 at 4.0GHZ. All of this appears to boost the performance of the Z420 quite significantly. Probably not as good as new Ryzen silicon but for that I've got to buy not only a new CPU but also new memory, PSU and motherboard. On the other hand my total system cost (not including the RX580) was $230 from a local recycler.

    I built a beefy budget gaming server using a Lenovo Thinkstation S30 which uses that LGA2011 socket. Got it sort of barebones for around $110 off ebay. It had no drives, only 4GB RAM, and some $5 4c/4t Xeon E5 CPU. I changed the CPU out to the E5-2690 which is 8c/16t, put in 32GB of ECC DDR3 (also cheap stuff these days), a SSD for the OS and game servers, then a couple of 1TB HDDs in RAID1 for NAS storage. I use it for running a few Minecraft servers as well as a few other game servers for me and my friends to play on. It works amazing and I couldn't even come close to the specs building something new for the same price.

    Great vid - one thing that I'd mention is that multi-processor Xeon systems are quite prevalent and can be had for little coin. Case in point, my gaming system is a Dell Precision T5600 - dual E5-2643 quad core Xeons with 64 GB of ECC RAM (capable of 128 GB). I've added an AMD Rage Fury Nano card along with a pair of PCIe SSDs (240 GB OCZ RevoDrive and a 400 GB Sun/Oracle Warp Drive Flash Accelerator that Windows 10 sees as an SSD). The Oracle drives are a steal - 400 GB PCIe SSD for about $30 shipped, and faster than the OCZ drive. The system was about $200, processor upgrades were about $20/each when I got them, 4 sticks of 16 GB were about $20/each as well. Add your own storage and video card... and away you go. Games at 1080p on a 55" screen like a champ - and Dell still has support for the T5600s available, easy to find and download drivers.

  • @Pressbutan
    @Pressbutan 4 года назад

    Yo Oz! My advice if you're going Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge is the E5-2667 V1/V2 . V1 offers 6 cores at a higher base clock of 2.89 single core to 3.5, all core to 3.19 with the high TDP of 125W and the higher L3 cache (which can come in handy for some tasks). I'm on a 2667 V1 for my daily driver (Dell Precision T3600/Vega 64) and I cannot stop telling people to check it out; though I'd suggest the T5810 as it offers the 625/825W PSU by default and offers the dual socket X99 board rather than a single slot X79. I bought my 2667 V1 for about $30 on ebay a few months ago, they're listing at or around $25-40 depending on the seller. Would obvs aim to buy for as low as possible considering they aren't getting any younger.
    One last edit: If you do get a Sandy Bridge, get a set of Noctua 92mm fans and replace the stock CPU cooler fans in a push-pull config. Run them at high by cutting the PWM wire/set to high in your config. You'll see idle temps in the high 30*C (38-39C) and Prime95 small FFT workloads settle in at around 70*C, and they're barely audible.
    Thanks as always for the show, love your work!

    Another gem Oz. I'm still rocking my FX 8300 (OC'd to 4.4Ghz) and 7950. I don't game as much as I used to but it does well for those games that I do (CS:GO, Fortnite with my son who hands me regular beatings lol). My son's computer is by far the quickest and most modern as it was built in 2019. But if I were to attempt to build it now, I'd easily pay double. Even a 2600x where I live (Canada) is $100 more now. But that can you do? Unprecedented demand can do that.
    Anyway. Keep up the exceptional work. Your channel is both informative and comforting. Take care.

    My phase 1 upgrade was from an old Phenom II X4 965 to an i7-3770, which is now rolling toward my phase 2 upgrade of an i7-4790 .... ok, maybe not as big a step the second time, as it's still only a 4C/8T, but for things that care about clock, it clocks faster than those Xeons.
    Real reason for where I ended up, was a collision of two plans.....
    1. Get a nicer motherboard for my 3770 (with native SATA 3 and 5.1 audio)
    2. Build a Haswell setup which I intended to sell - which then placed me in the situation of having a nice board for the 3770 and a board that didn't give me 5.1 - BTW I also wanted line in, so jack retasking wasn't an option for the Haswell.
    Asked around and someone on a forum found a decently priced board that ticked all my boxes

      @Chand Master Actually some of them are getting silly cheap already. It really depends on what you want to do. If you just want an MMS then you can make an ultra low power system with brand new parts for $300USD. That said a Ryzen 1 series is more expensive than a Ryzen 5 3400G How does that work?

      It's unlikely they will be the new "xeon" for one specific reason. Memory architecture. IE the Xeon is quad channel and the ECC memory kits are peanuts cheap. So a DDR3 ECC on a Xeon can perform like a DDR4 kit quite easily. EG you have 4 channels at 1866MHz which is the equivalent of 2 channels at just over 3700MHz. Except of course it's way way cheaper.

    Have an E5-2689 + 32GB ECC DDR3 1866 quad-channel Kit in the last almost 2 years, bought the CPU on AliExpress for 40US$ (with a -10US$ coupon, the RAM costs me around 50US$ the 32GB Kit), traded for my "new" Ryzen 1400 + 8GB DDR4 2133 dual-channel Kit, and, well, till now I have no concerns or regrets about that trade...

    My own main rig is a good example of another benefit for the x79/x99 Xeon platform. I got an off lease Dell T5610 from a local animation studio for 500. It packs dual E5-2660 V2s and 128GBs of ECC DDR 3 RAM and I can upgrade to V3 Xeons. Dual sockets and 128GBs are not even an option on consumer systems. Plus one thing to think about in terms of longevity is workstation and server grade stuff tends to be of a higher tier in terms of quality and specifications.

    The summer before last. I drove about 2 hours away for a Craigslist ad. Was an HP Proliant ML350 G6. Is 2x X5650, for a total of 12c24t. Came with 32gb of what is likely lower speed RAM. Also had 2 of the possible 8 total spaces in the front drive cage populated. small capacity, 15k. 2.5" sas drives for a small RAID 1+0 logical volume. He even threw in 2008r2, all for 100 dollars. I kept it on a fairly strict power diet since, and used it for Plex Media Server. I've since switched to an m92p with an i5 3470 for this, so the Proliant became one of many servers sitting in a spare bedroom. Fast forward to about a month ago. A good friend of mine expressed interest in getting a desktop to play games on, despite the fact that he has never played pc games before. I started looking through these older servers, and was admittedly pretty shocked by the 2x x5650 benchmark score. It turns out to be very close to the score of a 9600k! Once I realized this, I started to send him fb marketplace ads to entry level graphics cards, to use for the time being. A couple of days ago, he followed up on a single fan MSI RX550 4gb, and he got it for 80 dollars. We're still in the process of getting games installed and such, but I tested it with Doom Eternal and Battlefield V with very smooth results. Ideally, more gpu horsepower will happen in the future, but I would like to see someone build something that would perform better, at the price point of 180$!

    Although, clearly much deeper than the $15 end of the pond. I have had some luck scoring some really great Ryzen deals. Last year, it was a Threadripper 1920x for $199, which was an amazing deal. This year, although not "low-buck", a tremendously discounted Threadripper 2990wx ($850) and ASRock X399 TaiChi ($194 open box) was a good score.

    Currently running a I7-3960x on x79 :)
    Could some of the issue be the motherboards ? If you get a decent overclock and have a motherboard that can take advantage of the quad channel memory that those chipsets and CPU's have you'd close the gap on Ryzen.
    The hardest is knowing which are the good motherboards from AliExpress. The price of decent motherboards from the time of x79 and x99 are still quite high on the used market, so trying to get a decent motherboard from AliExpress is key.
    I've been tempted to build setting similar, just doing research on which motherboard.
    PS. Thanks for the awesome content, keep up the great work !

    I had a 3820 CPU back in the day. I wold probably still be using it if the Intel brand x79 motherboard I paired it with hadn't died. That was a problem. When I needed a new compatible motherboard the no longer manufactured LGA 2011 motherboard alone cost more than a new CPU+Motherboard+RAM so I ended up with a new build sporting a new Intel I7 7700k and I've been with that ever since. I've considered giving Ryzen a go and just haven't had any need to do so other than curiosity. My wallet voted NO to curiosity and I respected that. The 7700k was a slight upgrade from the third gen 3820 extreme edition.

    You forgot one more pro for the X79 platform though and it is RAM prices. RAM for these things are extremely cheap and in the case of that HP motherboard, having 8 DIMMs means you can have massive amounts of VRAM for substantially cheaper! Even 4-DIMM systems support an upwards of minimum 64GB of RAM if not 128GB. DDR3 Registered ECC also most of the time comes with heatsinks so you can squeeze more SPD or even overclock out of it. I run my Micron 4GB PC-10600R sticks at 1866Mhz OC and it's all good surprisingly!
