Man talk about ironic timing. I just heard of the passing of legendary Disney voice actress Pat Carroll. Pat truly was a legend with a one of kind voice and cackle behind one of the greatest Disney villains of all time. Pat left behind a performance as Ursula which will never be forgotten, and although it was far from her only role, it is definitely the one she'll be remembered in for generations to come. As her child put it "Mom, do you realize that we grew up watching Disney films, and now your grand children will hear you in a Disney film." May she rest in peace.
Pat also don't mind that people will remember Ursula as her famous character. She loves Ursula so much. We all will remember her sense of humor, Voice and Laughter forever. RIP Pat Carroll.

@@jace3811 Same! I believe it unfortunately comes down to society not being as progressive back in the 90s compared to today. It most likely would have been shocking to have a Filipino woman voice a protagonist in the 90s so therefore they casted Lea as the singing voice.

Whoever decided to hire Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian deserves an Oscar because Sebastian is a whole generations mascot. If I remember correctly from waking sleeping beauty "under the sea" was the first song from little mermaid that was presented to the execs at Disney….& the rest is history!

_The Little Mermaid_ was actually the first great movie Disney had made in decades-since at least the 60s. _Encanto_ (2021) seems to have been well-received, and both _Zootopia_ and _Moana_ were pretty great. It's mainly just Disney's live-action remakes which have been thoroughly disappointing.

Jodi is such a multifaceted singer. She can sound sweet and innocent, and the next she can do a mean gravel as Vanessa.
Jodi Benson's voice always gives me chills, it is truly on of a kind, and the fact that she is still so sweet in real life is just so wonderful.
Fun Disney fact: In the film Enchanted, when Giselle goes to Robert's office, the background music is the instrumental of Part of Your World and his assistant is played by Jodi Benson.

Pat Carroll somehow dose fantastic with Ursula, and I think that's why I love Ursula, Samuel E Wright actually made Sebastian a wonderful memorable lovable character, & Jodi Benson love her as Arial and love her as Jodi Benson, All these characters wouldn't have been without all the greatest voices out there ❤️

@@adrienalice1568Because they're okay with race swapping good characters but not villains. When will people get it that doing that isn't okay regarding of the race being changed? If Halle is as good as Disney has convinced everyone she is and that's truly the only reason she got the part (and you'd be an idiot if you believe that, as that excuse wouldn't fly if they were to race swap Tiana), they should have created an original role just for her. No one would have had a problem with that, and it would have created more original characters for people to admire and see themselves in. But they had to needlessly change an established character and expect anyone who doesn't shill for Disney to be okay with it. Both Ariel and Vanessa are the same race. Vanessa was literally meant to look and sound exactly like Ariel, only with dark hair. That's part of how she was able to bewitch Eric. He wouldn't have looked at her long enough for Ursula to cast her spell had she looked entirely different from Ariel (remember, he saw her well enough that the only reason he didn't think Ariel was the one who saved him was because she couldn't talk or sing). If they were going to change Ariel, they should have changed everyone. I'm sorry, I am just not okay with the one redheaded character I, as a redhead, saw myself in, being taken away. It isn't fair to people like me, who have so few characters as it is and who've spent a life time being made fun of for our hair color and being rejected for blondes and brunettes, and it also isn't fair for people of color to not get original characters.

Do you know the true origins of Ursula? They hint it a little in the animated version when she talks when she was eating while watching Ariel hurry back home after consulting with Scuttle. She mentions “… In my day we had fantastical feasts when I lived in the palace…” only royalty lives in palaces so was she queen? No to young for that. Princess? That would make her Triton’s sister. Also, in the Broadway musical, Ursula refers to Triton as “…Brother, Darling…” when King Triton confronts her after taking Ariel captive after the sunset on the 3rd day. (There was no Vanessa. She still used her voice to distract Eric and win the “contest” that was happening to find the right voice. Lastly, there is a book called “Poor Unfortunate Soul” which I need to read but I was told by friends it explains her origin and relationship with Triton.

Jodi Benson is amazing. She was a narrator for Epcot's Candlelight Processional on one of the days my chorus class performed there and we got to meet her backstage. She sang Part of Your World for us and I swear I almost cried.
I did the Candlelight Processional too! But it was back in 92 and 93. Our narrator in 93 was James Earl Jones, and I just stared up in awe at Darth Vader! It was an amazing experience.
I still get chills listening to "Part of Your World." A beautiful interpretation of a beautiful song.
Man, Pat Carroll and Jodi Benson are simply top tier in the Disney-verse. Every time they are on screen or performing on stage as Ursula and Ariel/Vanessa respectively, they know how to give it their all in a scene, and in Jodi’s case, the fact that she can maintain her Ariel voice from 3 decades ago is UBER talented

Voice actors are just so magical and good at what they do, because they go in knowing they can't rely on their body and movements to show the emotions and actions. When you add such talented, expressive voices to wonderful animation, then you get magic. This is why live versions with standard actors have such a hard time living up to their animated counterparts. However, I still think the live versions have value and can bring something new to the table. This is my favorite Disney movie, but I'm also looking forward to the live version.

They were all amazing artists! The singer who was Ariel's voice singing Part of That World at the end made me cry and then seeing the 2 actors who has since passed, almost got me bawling. So deeply touching.

Halle is a great singer but there’s something about Jodi’s clear, clean vocals and simplicity on her notes that makes it so special. She truly captured the innocence of Ariel.

Ashman/Menken were a powerhouse writing team: Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin. There would've been more if Ashman hadn't died. He was the Cole Porter of musical theatre.
He was. The more I listen to "Part of Your World" the more I think it's Howard's own plea for acceptance in this one, and I'm not the only one to interpret it this way. I usually cry when I think about it too much.

Back when the movie came out, his son was in elementary school, and his son wanted a Ariel Barbie doll for Christmas. Well, he got one, then his classmates laughed at him for it. Like so many others, this movie and these characters were a huge part of my life growing up. I had a huge collection of Disney movies. It was my comfort and when I have a really bad as an adult I’ll watch the little mermaid to lift my spirits up. Seems so silly but this movie is my all time favorite ❤❤❤
