As a home inspection student, I found this video very helpful in learning the importance and functions of a properly installed chimney cap. Thank you very much. I will be applying this knowledge in the field.
We recently had a wood heater installed in our home. After much reluctance, I agreed to the chimney being installed straight through our ceiling and metal roof. I have a 4 ft stack on the roof. The system was professionally installed, and I was assured that today’s technology would prevent a roof leak, which was my greatest fear. Well, you guessed it. We had a strong thunderstorm to pass through today, and I found a pool of water on top of my heater. You could see where the rain water followed the outside of the chimney on its way to inside my house. I immediately contacted the owner for help, and he said these things happen when we have such a rain event. What!!!??? So you’re telling me that my gut feeling in the beginning was spot on. I’m so sick over the fact that we have punched a hole in our roof only to be told it’s gonna leak sometimes. In his defense, an installer is coming next week to check it out. Am I overreacting? Is this leakage truly the norm?
Pinellas County,Florida, no chimney here but want a thing like a chimney at the peak of my roof and maybe 3 feet tall that would draw the hot air out of my attic. Ever build anything like that it would be made of wood with some kind of waterproof siding and of course a top to keep the rain out but no fan. My roof is 3/12.
Thanks. How much vertical height should there be between the top of the flu and the inside roof of the cap? Is there a minimum number of inches that is acceptable?
Excellent video. Inevitably wind driven water will get blown through the screen. Does the skirt style cap not trap the water inside on the crown? I’m curious how the skirt style cap is fastened to the crown? Ive been told it is sometimes wired to the chimney below the crown? Is that true? Thank you.
The chimney will get wet everytime it rains. Concrete and brick are made to get wet. This guy makes it seem as it’s a problem. No cap will stop ur chimney from getting wet.
My chimney doesn't have a cement crown that has a lip. So, we bought one that attaches to the flue but it keeps flying off with a heavy wind. What now?
Was this happening after bolting it down, just sitting on the crown? I'm having this problem now but planned on securing it myself since my roofer/mason did not secure it properly. They just "secured" it with the concrete, no bolts to secure it. Lazy.
Not accurate. We have installed thousands of these types of caps and never had an issue that was caused by the cap. By having a 12" screen all the way around with the proper mesh size we actually increase airflow.
@@kyle2kmaxima in the winter, the inside of the house is warmer than the outside, so the warmer air with pressure goes up the chimney to the outside cold properly. In the summer, most circumstances people us air conditioners, that means the inside of the house is cooler than the outside, plus the air conditioner is pulling the air from inside the house taking away the pressure a chimney needs to draft properly. AC, bathroom fans, and kitchen fans pull air out of the house, so it has to be replenished somehow. These units will pull fresh air down chimneys, because it’s the only free flowing source that’s not restricted. In the summer a hot water heater that vents into a chimney might have issues with venting properly up the chimney because the air is warmer outside. A dirty fireplace in the summer might smell the house up because the humidity and air are flowing the opposite way down the chimney into the house trying to replenish the air inside. A chimney cap in the summer might hurt the up draft of a chimney if the up draft is already weak in the winter. Some chimney caps have a removable top/cover, so in the summer you can remove the restricting top/cover and replace it with a free flowing screen so animals can’t get in, but in the winter you have to put the original top/cover back on. Hopefully that makes sense.

Chimney caps are like snake oil..the more we can sell you,the more oil you will have to grease your backside for more oil..make sense?🙇

What about flashing the entire chimney stack with stainless steel and put a cap on top of it? Wouldn't that be more waterproof?

Never seen a crown extend past the chimney like that
I believe it should extend like that as a drip edge to keep water away so it doesn't run down the side of the chimney stone or brick work

You reduce draft big time with a cap,,no cross air current...

There are certain circumstances that a cap will hurt the draft, common in the humid summer and when it’s raining.
