Thank you so much for this much needed explanation Katlyn, to the people entering this world of finding a ghostwriter! It can be tough and there are some shady people out there. I was lucky to have my book written and published through a Houston Based company Writers Of The West and that saved me a great amount of time and hassle!
This was very informative. I've never really considered doing ghostwriting before but I'm curious about it now, especially as a way to explore other genres and ideas. And I agree with you that ghostwriters shouldn't be credited on the cover as it's not their idea, they were merely the tool to get it written.
Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment, Arnella. It's hard to convince people sometimes that I don't want my name on the cover unless the client does. I wouldn't have had my hand in the book at all unless it was for them choosing me to write it. :0)
@@Katlyn_Duncan I suppose it would be different if the client only had a vague idea of the story, and then you as the ghostwriter came up with a masterpiece that becomes a huge bestseller. That's an extreme situation of course, but it's a case where it would be insincere of the client to claim all the credit.
@@ArnellaHobler Admittedly, I've done this! Early on, I had a few clients who gave me a few sentences and the genre of the book and I had to plot it out. I did submit in different milestones to make sure I was on the right track. But again, it might not have existed without the client and working with them, so I'm still okay with it. I learned quickly, though, that I won't work with clients in this way anymore. I prefer an outline or at least a fleshed out synopsis. :0)
This video was very informative, never heard of ghost writing but I was doing some research in launching out as a virtual assistant and it caught my attention. Very informative
This was really interesting! What are your favorite genres to ghost write? Are they the same as your favorite genres for your own stories? Do you think your tone is consistent in your personal and ghost writing? Or do you sometimes write more serious, comedic, romanticized, or gritty depending on your request? Or do you only write in one style and make sure you fit you client so your style can satisfy them?
So many great questions! Out of all the genres I've written I really enjoyed the contemporary middle grade books. They were a departure from my usual and very fun! I love your question about tone. Usually, when I submit for a job, they require a writing sample. I try to ask them for an example chapter from what they're looking for so we have the opportunity to discuss tone, etc. I don't consciously write "my" tone, I just write how the characters sound to me in my head. I've only come up against one particular client who I worked with to create the voice THEY were looking for. It all depends! I've written heavier heat levels in romance novels than I would ever write under my own name, but that seems to be the stark difference, I think. I tend to take jobs I'm interested in spending a lot of time with so I haven't come up against too many issues with the writing.

It very informative. I've been looking for a ghost writer for awhile, but I was hesitated. I'll been thinking every day how to get my story to be written. I wish I knew how to write it, but my english is not proficient. I'm bilingual old lady. I'm willing to pay you to write for me. Please text me to let me know (#240-482-7913). Hello Katlyn, thank you for you time to respond my request. Most your viewers are interested to do ghostwriting with your help. My vocabularies are very limitted. I prefer to have you do ghostwriting as documentary about my distintively naive and tragic life, so I could pass on the story to my children and grandchildren to know and to learn from my strength or mistake that I have experienced - "Sin bad or Sin naive". I wish could tell them directly but it's not easy. After I retired, I've been thinking everyday. As I mentioned you earlier that I willing to pay you. Please let me know.
@@djmagnificententertainment Hi DJ. Thanks for watching. Currently, I don't coach writers, but feel free to check out any of my writing tip videos. Best of luck with your book.
Is it possible to traditionally publish a ghost written book. Everything I read says "Perfect for self-publishing." But I want to try traditional first.
I would say you definitely could. I do wonder though when you get a contact for that book, and hopefully for more books, would you then write the others yourself or still work with a ghost? I’ve never heard of that scenario but anything is possible!
That was a very informative video. I'm also considering to start my career as a ghostwriter. Can you tell me how can I do that? Which platforms to choose as a newbie and how can I make my portfolio?
I only have experience working on Upwork. So I would suggest checking them out. When it comes to your portfolio, I would have sample chapters for the genre you're looking to write. What I've done in the past is ask clients for prompts and write those as my samples. Good luck! :0)
I feel like if I have the time to read plenty books on creative writing and just fiction novels and study grammar and punctuation I will be able to write my own books, but since I work a full-time job and have no writing experience as of yet I will I to hire a ghost writer. I know I have a learning disability but I want let it stop me from writing my own books, I'll just have a ghost writer write 5 of my books while I write the 30 other books by myself.
Thanks for the informative video. May I ask a few questions, please? I have ideas I think would make awesome stories. No outlines, just ideas. Who can I bring my ideas to in order to fully flesh out the ideas, to pinpoint theme, to know my story's potential better? Will a ghost writer accommodate that or require that? I need help in that area. Is that a developmental editor or is a developmental editor for fixing drafts? What service, if not a ghostwriter, can I hire or speak with to discover what direction to go with my vague ideas. I am considering hiring a ghostwriter, but I don't know if that's the right step since I don't have much to go on other than my idea(s). I'm browsing ghostwriting companies and individuals but they are expensive and I wouldn't want to go through the process nor involve a ghostwriter if what I currently have as an idea isn't possible. Please, help! I am especially fond of the possibility of collaborating with the ghost writer, that way I feel, as the 'author,' that my ideas, inspiration and overall feel of the book is my own, even though I am not skilled or talented at writing. Besides, I know that a story should probably be written FOR the reader, whether that be to entertain, inform, inspire, etc, and if I can't achieve those goals because I'm too busy or too unlearned in the craft or differently abled, then a ghostwriter is a phenomenal savior and realistic paid service/trade to consider. I just don't know what to do at this point - I have the love and motivation to tell a story, but it can go in any direction and so I need help molding it into something, into the one something it will become, into the one and only thing it can be. What profession offers that? I have more specific questions, but they are probably best for whomever I end up working with/hiring, such as how can the ghostwriter match the style, voice, tone, pace, flow, atmosphere, etc, that I feel are important factors in creating my story's experience? Also, theme - while I have ideas that I'm excited about exploring, I need to make sure the theme is clear in my mind and in the mind of the ghostwriter so they can hang the story's elements on it. I feel that with all these gears and puzzle pieces where one can't work without the other, something is sure to get lost or left out or miss the mark when having someone other than me write it - so I feel (as a customer and person unqualified to write) that I am not only relying on an other to spin my tale, but I also feel like I'm settling or choosing a last resort. Choosing a last resort is not to offend or sound hard, but look at it from my, the customer's and storekeeper's point of view - I am trusting an individual, as skilled and talented they are, with my deepest essences. It's pretty frightening and there are a lot of concerns and uncertainties handing over my ingredients and utensils to a stranger chef! But, that is all that can be done if the story is to emerge because I can't write it myself. I hope in an interview I can gain a sense as to whether or not the ghostwriter will be thoughtful, patient, understanding and empathetic so that they truly care to write the story as close to what I have in my head and heart. I've never spoken with one, so I don't know how that will go. Do ghostwriters charge to contact them? If I wanted to see if they're a good match? I don't want to waste anyone's time, but I can't really afford to interview more than 1-2 ghostwriters. What are you thoughts on ghostwriting companies? I feel like I'd get put with whomever they think would best suit my story, which is great but also scary since I have no control. Lastly, do the ideas of the 'author' stay between the customer an ghostwriter, during and after the project? What about my discussing story details in the interview stage? What I'm worried about is - I need to give details about my ideas: plot, theme, characters, voice, setting, tone, etc, in order to determine if the ghost writer is the best ghostwriter for this story. How can I be protected and sure that discussing/divulging details when interviewing a ghostwriter for my story, that all my ideas discussed are safe? NDA for a discussion/interview? Do you have recommendations for chapterbook or MG ghost writers?
Hi Daniel. It looks like you've thought a lot about this. For most of your questions, I would direct them to the ghostwriter you choose to work with, since working styles vary. A ghostwriter I would recommend personally is Cyn Balog. I did an interview with her on my channel if you wanted to check that out: ruclips.net/video/tFarGdbayKc/видео.html. Also, you can check out Upwork and Reedsy for other opportunities to reach out to potential ghostwriters. That said, if you are unsure about using a ghostwriter, I wonder if you might want to reach out to a Story Coach versus a ghost, since they can advise you better on future options for your project. I hope that helped!
I planning on hiring a ghost writer for my first book because when you're a newbie Writer 1. I don't have enough experience 2. I don't own a computer or laptop with Microsoft word software I let my dad friend Mr. Don take my laptop to put bootleg Microsoft word on it for free since I can't afford the real price as if this moment and he's dragging his feet to get it so I can start writing my book. I feel like if I hire a ghost writer it will get done while this man is taking his sweet time 3. I don't have time, I notice when I'm trying to write my books my mom and friends feels like I'm neglecting them my ex boyfriend felt the same way. 4. I have a learning disability but can carve out creative ideas.
I have a 200 page fantasy/sci fi novel, which is been written in a straight to point narrative format, i would love to find a ghost writer to stretch it out and put a lot of poetic detail to it all, expand on it like you said with subplots and character struggles, its a project i recently finished but worked on for years in a handwritten 200 page book, i personally would credit the ghost writer as they would be just as esstential to the final form as i would be for giving them the material to work on, im not a very rich person but i would put what i could to develop something to be psyically released, im also an artist whom paints moments from the story as well as character portraits, do you think things like that would help the ghostwriter?
Thank you very much for your fast replay. If you wish to write and helping me out with my book , there my first language is German and Arabic ,,,,so I would need help with that....Thank you very much ....❤️
I'm a ghostwriter myself and I've only gotten jobs (Low paying by the way) through freelancing. And I'm looking to learn how this works on freelancing platforms
I don’t have any specific recommendations for ghostwriting, but if you’re interested in ghost writing fiction (which is what I do), I would grab some general writing craft books. Some of my favorites are Save the Cat writes a novel by Jessica Brody and GMC by Debra Dixon. Hope that helps!
Hello, I would like to know can you help me write a book about being a Parent outside of the house, basically parenting and a dad‘s perspective of not living in the home with the child.
Hi Derek. I don't specialize in non-fiction, so if I were you, I'd research writing non-fiction novels, and parenting books for research. Best of luck!
Hi, I have always wanted to write but do not have the education or skills to write properly. I have written a 6000-word story that needs fattening up and tidying. Is that the sort of thing you do? Also, how do I protect myself from you just taking my work? Sorry but I just don't know, not being rude.
Hey Tony! I am not currently taking on clients at the moment, but some ghostwriters do help you fix your work. Maybe search on Upwork.com for ghostwriters to help? That is the website I'm most familiar with. As to your second question: There is no way to prevent anyone from taking your work once you give it to them, but this doesn't really happen. Once you write something, the copyright is yours and you would have email correspondence, etc if someone tried to claim it as their own. This seems to be a common worry among amateur writers, but it shouldn't be, since everyone has their own author voice and for someone to edit, upload, promote, etc your book as their own is an arduous process and just doesn't happen. I hope I've eased your mind a little? Best of luck on your story.
In my experience it depends! But you should ask up front as it may adjust your rate for the project. Typically, I would charge more if editing was involved since it would be more time intensive.
I wrote a book RUSSIAN MOSAIC which I published on Amazon. I also gave several speeches, including Rotary club. I would like to hire a writer to write synopsis to aproach movie companies. Have you done it before? Or maybe you know a person who can do a good job? Thank you!
Hi Olga. I'm afraid that is out of my wheelhouse and I'm not sure of anyone who could. I worked on Upwork, so maybe try posting a job there? Good luck with your project!
Depending on if by a synopsis you mean a blurb or pitch to “sell” to companies OR a professionally laid proposal to send to companies, you will likely want to find a ghostwriter who states they specialize or are experienced in such proposals, just like people who already have their book written but want to submit it to publishing companies often look for ghostwriters to write their proposals. All the best with your endeavors! :)
Is there ghost writers for movies? Like I have a story I would like to direct and film, but I've never written a story in script form before, and I'm wondering if that's a thing in movies, if you ever heard of anything like that?
Mohamed Mohamed-Fawzy I don’t have any knowledge of this, but I’m sure they do exist as they do for fiction and nonfiction. Sorry I can’t be more help!
Hi Katlyn! Are you available as a ghostwriter? I need some coaching and I was wondering if i can get some help or possibly you writing a non-fiction book for me?
Hi Carlos. I've updated the description/pinned comment a while back stating that I'm unavailable for new clients. Sorry I can't be more helpful! I wish you the best on your project.
How much do you charge to be a ghost writer? I'm so wanting to publish a book, I have great ideas but would need a ghostwriter to assist. Can you let me know. I'm completely out of the loop with this process.
Ghostwriters pay rates are wildly different based on experience levels and projects. I would take a look on Upwork or any other freelance sites to see what others are charging and find one within a budget you can afford.
Hey Abigail. Not sure what you mean by personal IDs? You might be able to find ghostwriting jobs on Craigslist, but I've never explored that website in that capacity.
@@Katlyn_Duncan a lot of sites require several forms of ID, such as driver's license, SS number, TIN number, so I'm just wondering where I can find other sites that aren't so regulated.
Hi Akinwole, thanks for commenting. It really depends on your experience, the clients budget, and then if you wanted to charge by word or the full book. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but best of luck with your project!
@@akinwole I believe I did a google search when I first started ghostwriting and found some ideas through there, and would tweak based on the clients. But there's no standard range that I know of.
I was under the impression that a ghost writer was just hired for their name to be used on a a book I write for the purpose of my own anonymity. I guess that would be considered a ghost author? haha
In my experience, yes. Either before the job is contracted, or after, I've had conversations about the vision for the project. Ultimately, the ghostwriter will try and fulfill what you are looking for so I would say transparency is key. I have an interview with a ghostwriting friend of mine who I mention in this video if you would like to understand how she interacts with clients: ruclips.net/video/tFarGdbayKc/видео.html
This is really cool! I'd love to try ghostwriting at some point. I know a lot of celebrities have ghostwritten books, and I know a lot of the Sweet Valley books were ghostwritten, but I didn't know the Babysitters Club had ghostwritten books too! haha i went to a panel with Ann M Martin at BookCon one year and she never mentioned that -- though I guess she mostly focused on her process for the first few in the series, probably before that happened. I have a teacher who ghostwrote for a few celebrities and our class was always trying to figure out who t hey were, but she was unbreakable! Those NDAs are powerful!
From what I read, she did write like 30-40 of them herself and the rest were ghostwritten/co-written. So Ann definitely put herself into the series for sure! And yes, NDAs are powerful. I always get questioned by my family and friends about it but my lips are sealed. It's probably more fun for me than them LOL

Hi Jud, thanks for commenting. I think as long as you're up front with the ghostwriter, it might work. Good luck with your project! :0)
Instagram?
There is a lot of competition out there. I’d say make sure you have solid sample pages and a good about page. Good luck!
Can you recommend a very good ghost writer for a short story? 1000---2000 word range?
I would check freelance websites like Upwork and Reddit. Good luck!
Amazin Video !
Thanks!
@@Katlyn_Duncan can i have ur insta or Fb to talk business Queen?
Nice one! Very informative!
Thanks! :0)
Do you interview clients prior to ghostwriting?
For fiction no. Typically that is done for nonfiction if you are writing memoir or something similar.
Are there any helpful books or guides you would recommend for ghostwriting specifically?
How does it work as far as editing? Does the ghostwriter handle that, or does the "author?"
@@Katlyn_Duncan That's okay, but thank you anyway though!
So as long as my client gives me all the information or words they want me to write down, then I'm good to go ig?
Maybe not all the words since that would be your job but ideally yes.
Hello, when are you going to start taking new clients?
Hey Floxy, right now I'm working on a referral basis for ghostwriting clients as I have a lot on my plate. Sorry!
Hi Katlyn. Is there a big market for non-fiction ghostwriting?
I believe so! My experience is with fiction, though, so I don't have much information about it.
How do I contact you ? Questions
My email address is on my About page.
Hello Katlyn, could you translate my book from Spanish to English?
Guitarra y Acordeón Hi there! Sorry this is not a speciality of mine. Best of luck with your book.
I can help
Where could I find jobs that don't require so many personal IDs? What about Craigslist?
Hey Abigail. Not sure what you mean by personal IDs? You might be able to find ghostwriting jobs on Craigslist, but I've never explored that website in that capacity.
@@Katlyn_Duncan a lot of sites require several forms of ID, such as driver's license, SS number, TIN number, so I'm just wondering where I can find other sites that aren't so regulated.
Abigail Joanna I see. I can’t recommend any websites that I’ve used which are like that. Best of luck though. 😁
Question how do they pay you? Can they pay you by mailing the pay?
Hi Gacha, thanks for commenting. I was paid electronically. How they pay you would really depend on the client and the agreed upon contract.
@@Katlyn_Duncan Ah I see, so do you know of any apps which you can start a profile for Ghost writing?
@@anitoks6217 I only have experience with Upwork.com. Best of luck!
@@Katlyn_Duncan Thanks! You too!
How did you pass away?
Ha!
Please, how much should I charge for a 60k words Novel???
Hi Akinwole, thanks for commenting. It really depends on your experience, the clients budget, and then if you wanted to charge by word or the full book. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but best of luck with your project!
@@Katlyn_Duncan Thank you for the help. I was hoping there was a range?
@@akinwole I believe I did a google search when I first started ghostwriting and found some ideas through there, and would tweak based on the clients. But there's no standard range that I know of.
@@Katlyn_Duncan thank you so much for the help... Keep up the good work☺️😘
Akinwole Adeyeye you are so welcome!
Can you write for a Trappist monk
Thanks for watching, Anthony. At this time I'm no longer taking new clients. Best of luck on your project.
Why hire a ghostwriter? I mean, if you have the idea, can the person not write it themselves?
A lot of people have good ideas but don’t know how to execute them.
I was under the impression that a ghost writer was just hired for their name to be used on a a book I write for the purpose of my own anonymity. I guess that would be considered a ghost author? haha
That is interesting! So they don’t do the writing? Wouldn’t you just use a pen name if you are actually writing the book?
Can I hire a ghostwriter to continue a story that I’m working on?
Hi, Samuel. In my own experience, yes. Best of luck with your project.
Katlyn Duncan how much would it cost me, say continuing a story for 50 pages?
@@samuelzev4076 That would depend on the rate of the ghostwriter. It can range depending on the story, their skill set, etc.
Katlyn Duncan can I discuss with the writer on how I want the story to play out?
In my experience, yes. Either before the job is contracted, or after, I've had conversations about the vision for the project. Ultimately, the ghostwriter will try and fulfill what you are looking for so I would say transparency is key. I have an interview with a ghostwriting friend of mine who I mention in this video if you would like to understand how she interacts with clients: ruclips.net/video/tFarGdbayKc/видео.html
Can you write my story
Hey Rick, thanks for stopping by. Unfortunately, I'm not taking on any more ghostwriting clients. Best of luck with your book!
$35.00. ? The person who hired you should be thrown in jail 😊
haha I know right?
