  • Sarah Hallberg, DO, Medical Director at Virta Health and Medical Director and Founder of the medically supervised weight loss program at Indiana University Health Arnett, summarizes the current dietary recommendation for patients with metabolic disease and why this approach may not be effective. She outlines recent research that suggests patients with metabolic diseases like type 1 and type 2 diabetes can achieve exceptional glycemic control using a low-carb ketogenic diet. Dr. Hallberg also discusses ways to help support patients in the long-term while maintaining this type of diet.

I use koolaid with Erthynol and bought a soda stream to add carbonation. I found I needed to double the sweetener if i added carbonation. PLEASE, PLEASE wean yourself off that poison. Do not use pink, yellow or blue packets of artificial sweetener. It was actually developed to make animals eat more so they grew faster. Now do you see why diet sodas make people more obese. I felt so terrible when I was diagnosed with diabetes that it didn’t really stink to begin the keto diet. I feel so much better and in three weeks my blood sugars have come down from consistently above 150 often going to 250 during the day now three weeks later, my continuous glucose monitor shows my glucose staying under 150 for the last two days. It has been a steady, decrease in glucose. And I feel so much better.

Excellent presentation. This should be mandatory for ALL doctors, nutritionists and dietitians . These 'professionals' are continuing the failed mantra that low fat, high fibre carbs are the healthy balanced diet. I get plenty of fibre from leafy vegetables and salads. I have full fat cream, cheese, eggs and peanut butter daily. I am 72 weigh nine stone five pounds at 5'8. Fit as a butchers dog. Have followed low carb for years, when the Atkins diet was popular. I am a vegetarian so protein is from nuts, eggs . My GP pushing me to have statins even when my cholesterol is normal !!

Great presentation. I’m not diabetic but was initially interested in this topic while contemplating dietary changes in sugar reduction. That lead to interest in the ketogenic approach. It’s only been a few of weeks but so far here’s my experience:
    -More focus
    -Less brain fog
-Initially less energy during workouts but that’s starting to change
-The inflammation that I’ve been used to for the past 30 years from arthritis has greatly reduced
    -less food cravings
-don’t crave sweets but miss Mac-n-cheese and baked beans
    -in general feeling much better
Also take ACV and intermittently fast 3-4 days a week
    -no weight loss yet though

Now i know what to tweak.instead of scratching my head gussying what I need to change. Guess I need to go lower carb because I’m not metabolically well. Confirmed that I need to do moderate protein. Confirmed dosing protein should be based on ideal body weight. Confirmed calories don’t matter. A wealth of information right here, based on research. So glad I stumbled across this.

Dont fall in love to soon, in a study Keto vs 5 day fast and 6 months med diet THRASHED a full 6 month keto diet. Kato does not work for everybody and is NOT a natural diet, it is a diet used in a clinical sense, med diet is a way of life adopted by people for thousands of years, the keto diet cannot be practiced outside of our unnatural supermarket convenience stores type of society, try doing keto in the jungle/forest, you wont find Tesco and jars of coconut oil, lard and meat wont be fatty at all, so how would you get that 75% fat from the diet, you wont, you'd get into ketosis via not eating for a few days whilst you hunted for food, man as usual being the idiot that he/she is wants to trick the body into having the benefits of ketosis without the pain of fasting, the result is disease, ahh they didn't tell you that people have died on keto? whoops, it can work for some but it doesnt work for everybody and actually has harmed many.

I would love to find the high level evidence that supports the use of magnesium supplementation to support relief of cramps. I know Dr Westman and others, also suggest that magnesium provides relief but ai cannot find anything that supports this. Not criticising, just would like to know. Cramps can be sleep destroying and must lead to big difficulties for weight loss. The only scholarly info I can find says that it is used for certain cardiac conditions and that even that is in question. Cheers. Excellent work. Magnesium doesn't so much relieve cramps as it helps maintain electrolyte balance. If you over hydrate or are dehydrated, cramps can be a side effect. When following a ketogenic diet and carb intake is restricted, glycogen stores in the muscle are reduced and glycogen is responsible for water retention.

Good presentation. I read that the keto diet should be 10% energy from carbs, 20% of energy from proteins and 70% from fat. In your lecture you use 30-50 g of carbs. For arguments sake assume 50 g of carbs = 10%, in my case my ideal body wt is 75kg and on the basis of 1.5 g/kg body wt. I get 112 g but for the sake of expediency say it is about 100g protein which represents 20%. Then on the ratio basis of 70% fat that means 350 g of fat. My conundrum is that I will have a problem finding 350 g of fat for my diet. Yes, there is some in my breakfast bacon and some in an avocado at lunch, a little in my beef or chicken and a little in a BP coffee or a whip cream dessert but it seems like a stretch to get the g. of fat up to 350. How do we accomplish this. Perhaps a video to address this conundrum would be helpful. and useful as the fat gram %age is hard to reach.

@@rawmilkmike That is what I have been doing for about 3 years, but I do love peanuts. They are really legumes and have omega six fats and some glucose, so I haven't been eating them. Seeds and grains, what is the difference?

@@Billy97ify - I see your point. I don't think grains are considered seeds. Aren't grains mostly starch?
I tend to believe the people who say peanuts are not healthy. There are some mainstream people who claim they're OK. But they'd probably say the same thing about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
That's funny, I remember a phase I went through trying to make healthy peanut butter sandwiches with toasted sprouted grain bread raw honey and cashew butter. The kids got tired of them quick.
I kind of liked them but they were still basically a sugar sandwich. Now I'm addicted to stevia. I kind of wish I would have just gone carnivore from day one.

I really do love Sara and what she has to say.....however! I realize this is an older video and perhaps she has changed some of her perceptions about too much protein while doing keto, but carnivores, obviously, have a differing opinion. There are waaaaaay too many carnivores now who are eating a ton of RED meat, while doing VERY low carb and doing very well and have the Labs to back that up. I know when I began doing Keto back in 2018 I heard the same thing about too much protein can kick you out of ketosis but I think that was somewhat misstated. But over time I have learned other wise especially after going carnivore a year ago.
There may be more research needed though.
