I have had both knees replaced, Lainie, because of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It’s a gruelling op and there is lots of physio/exercise to follow. It’s a long process of healing too. Like you said, it’s not an unqualified success for everyone [for some it’s brilliant] and I have been left with constant discomfort rather than actual pain [partly due to the range of other joint issues I have] but it’s completely liveable with. I don’t regret it because the alternative was sharp and pretty unbearable pain - so it had to be done and things are better than before the replacements. I do hope you can find a way forward in your life which enables you to feel comfortable, settled and happy. 💜

It's moments like this that I wish I was good with words. I try and focus on 'today' and do the small things to make improvements to my health today - sometimes the big picture is too daunting! Speaking to professionals is never a bad idea :) Take care xx

Awe Lainie! Your video was so heartfelt and honest as always… I had a hip replacement in 2010. Definitely talk with your medical doctor, and maybe with the new technologies out there, something may work better for you now. I hope you can get the answers you need. Sending hugs from across the pond!

Having a lifestyle that is acceptable to you while you lose weight is the goal isn't it. You can't just hang about till you've lost it. Come on Laine ladies let's have some quality of life ideas

Dear Lainie I dip in and out so am not totally familiar with your back story. I think being referred to a surgeon would possibly help to let you know if it is even possible to have your knees done at this stage. My friend is 20 stone and has been told to lose 2 stone before having her knees done, which she is trying to do and uses painkillers every day so she can get around. I had both my hips replaced several years ago and they wouldn't treat anyone with a BMI over 40, and at one point over 35. I've also had cellulitis in one leg, had never heard of it before, was quite frightening and I had to take 3 months off work for it to heal, so feel your concerns are valid. After that experience, I was told to elevate my legs whenever possible. If I were to offer any advice, I would say focus on your weight loss and treatment for lymphodema so that when you do eventually have surgery there is a higher chance of success. I know it isn't easy to do. Have you had any sort of counselling? I only say this as it can be very helpful and can help people feel more relaxed so that it is then easier to not comfort eat. You're a very articulate and very aware person. Maybe there are some free telephone counselling services in your area, perhaps your GP could help. I also don't know if weight loss surgery has ever been on the cards. Thinking of you. xx

Hey Clare. Thanks for commenting. I am gonna contact the consult again and see what he thinks and go from there. I have had counselling in the past. I think it's just making the decision that I struggle with. Once I've done that things will be easier x

I really felt for you, Laine. My mum should have had a knee replacement but bottled out. After she fell last year and broke her hip, the surgeon said they might consider surgery on her knee again, but her GP advised against it due to the intense rehabilitation. Get proper advice, but certainly losing weight will benefit your health. Sending hugs 🤗😘

Hey Rosie. Firstly just wanted to say Hello & Welcome. I was on the waiting list for surgery but changed my mind after losing 18 stone on my own and having sorted a lot of mental health issues out. I gained 9 stone back in a year after losing both my parents, my friend and my auntie. I have since lost 6 stone of that 9 stone and so I'm at a total loss of 15 stone. Still a way to go I know but I feel I can do it as long as I can keep my focus. I have friends who have had weight loss surgery and only one out of five has not had any other issues and some of them serious issues, so this has put me off that as an option, plus as I believe serious weight issues are caused by mental health than anything else focus on that has helped me the most. I just feel at a bit of a loss as to which path to go down as it were. Thanks again for your comment.

Wow sound like you have done amazing all on your own lainie, yes I know weight loss surgery is not for everyone and not easy , I’ve lost 7 stone by calorie counting and intermittent fasting but I constantly struggle not to over eat . I do agree it’s to do with my mental health, keep keep doing what you have been doing and you will get there, hopefully I will too.

@@BigGirlsReallyDoCry I was going to suggest this as well but thought it too personal or sensitive issue to suggest, but I do think it could be an option, (maybe there are national organisations or the surgeon could give you more information about it all?) can you could look at success rates in your area maybe/get a surgeon in another area? Losing weight by yourself is just so so hard, would you be willing to talk about this in your vlog, as it something I thought about, are there any organisations that could help you make the decisions you need to make about all of this, or an advocacy service, I know you can get so exhausted with constantly fighting, I have to do this re my autistic son, and you can reach an impasse. Thinking of you, wish I could help morexxx

1 in 20 serious complication is high I get that, I really feel for you, if you were willing to set up a crowdfund or fundraising page to fund you someone who can more proactively help you lose weight eg a weight loss PA type thing I would contribute xxx

Have the surgeons suggested a realistic weight that knee replacement would work for you

He said they would work at any size it's about the antheistic that they have issue

  • @xxFornaxx

I think you need some facts before you can make any decision in regards to your knees. So reach out to the doctors and get a review, see if they think it's a procedure than could still be done for you, and be of benefit . Use that information to help decide what to pursue next. When my mum in law had knee problems that could not be dealt with by a replacement she opted for an amputation. We thought she had lost the plot!. In fact she never looked back. She was free from all the pain and infections been caused by the issue, and was able to focus on adjusting to living as an amputee. We would never have thought of amputation as been a positive outcome for her, when in fact it gave her new lease of life. NOT that I'm suggesting it for you!! I'm simply saying there may be things that have never been considered for you, and consulting with medical professionals may bring ideas to light.
