- This Leadwords Jukebox plays one song at a time on tiny endless loop tapes and was sold in the mid-1980s. The tapes were expensive but the experience was quite fun. In this video, we take one apart to see what made it tick. We also show off my 2-XL toy and a similar endless loop message taking machine by Maverick.

My dad and I saw one of these in Service Merchandise. He wanted to get one for some friend of his who maintained coin-op machines (vending, arcade games and [of course] jukeboxes). What kept him from getting it was the format of the cassettes. However, there was another jukebox that would play your standard audio cassettes. So, he got that one instead. We also made a mixtape of his favorite songs.
I had one of these in the 80's. It was not cheap but I was very happy with it... ever since I've had over 30 real jukeboxes untill now. Currently I have the real deal. Wurlitzer 1015 from 1946
It's cute, but think most people who bought these or got them as a gift got tired of playing the same tapes and put it in the closet. There's plenty of room to put an Mp3 player inside or add an input jack.
I did it, very poor performance
wildbilltexas this was way before mp3. But an mp3 jukebox would be cool wonder if there is an mp3 jukebox on sale....
That is not a subwoofer, just a full range. For all that want to know, a full range speaker is just one that is capable of producing a large range of frequency the cheaper ones wont even cover the vocal range and some of the high end in a proper enclosure can cover most of what humans can hear. But all setups have drawbacks most speakers use multiple drivers of different types to help extend the range producible. The tweeter is for high frequency like the upper end of female vocals, cymbals etc. then Mid-range "if used" handles things mostly in the vocal range "not for vocals but that range of frequency" then the woofer handles from the higher range of bass up to the lower limit of the mid "if used" or tweeter. there is a mid-bass "if used" it fits between the subwoofer and woofer. Then the subwoofer is for every thing lower than the woofer can produce and quality subwoofers will play below the audible range.
There is a lot of science and art to matching parts up especially in designing the enclosure for them.
Now before anyone gets all foaming at the mouth yelling "THATS NOT RIGHT" its not wrong and its good enough for who its for.
Thank you, but the idea that the little speaker was anything powerful was a joke. Tongue in cheek my friend. It's okay, you'll understand me in time. :)
ya my mind kinda got stuck on the subwoofer part and froze not allowing more to fully register till the reboot was finished at about the "common in toys and other products" quote. I seem to have a growing problem with this.
I have one of these... and all of the tapes they produced for it.
I'm sure he was been sarcastic about the "subwoofer".
for non-working wurlitzer microcassettes, I believe the small foam pads in them deteriorate and shrink over time, which makes the tape head not be able to read/play it. have you ever taken apart the microcassettes and fixed one that didn't work? I'm very good at fixing things, and broke the first one i tried beyond repair..any help there would be great
subwoofer, it's a woofer designed to reproduce LOW frequencies only, woofer is the term you were looking for.
Subwoofer (low frequencies), woofer (mids), tweeter (high frequencies)
Thank you, but the idea that the little speaker was anything powerful was a joke. Tongue in cheek my friend. It's okay, you'll understand me in time. :)
it's fine, i understood the pun, and it's not just random hate, IMHO the joke was less fun because of the word choice, just this. I like your content, im subscribed to your channel
Squawker = Mids.
I think the spacer is to brace the unit internally for when tapes are pushed in. Either it's needed structurally, or the flex wasn't acceptable for quality impressions, but either way it looks like the cross-shaped brace was cheaper than reinforcing or redesigning the board/tape mech mounts or the boards.
Die Hard batteries must be designed for use around Christmas.
I actually repaired one of these about five years ago. It required a 2N3904 "clone" transistor, and a 34KΩ, ½-watt resistor (went to a comparator circuit, which didn't make sense; maybe part of the "errant tape defeat" circuitry?). Damn decent build quality; good mechanicals. They'll be around for a while.
I bought one of these maybe 30 years ago it came with the tiny cd's but I dont know where they are. Something got broken inside and it wouldn't play tapes anymore. Wish I had seen this video before I took mine apart and couldnt get back together
Those circular capacitors are ceramic capacitors.
i have this little baby and still trying to figure it out. as for as my tape wont play even after i insert a quarter
I guess the Jukebox has a better speaker but shame it dose not play your recordings.
A really OUTSTANDING video !!!
Well thank you very much for watching!!
Nice little device! You don't get stuff like this any more 🙁. What pioneer tape deck do you have
If you can get hold of an NEC V-70 or V-71 Beta VCR, that would make a good video. NEC was one of the few to take Sony's higher price Betamax license option where they didn't have to buy specific VCR parts from Sony. I had a V-70, there was not one Sony branded anything inside. I counted at least 40 knobs, sliders, buttons and in or out jacks on the front and rear. IIRC it had both analog VU meters and LED bar graph, with manual record level knobs for left and right audio. It also had a pair of 1/4" mic input jacks on the front. A couple of very unusual features were a NiCd battery soldered to the main circuit board to retain the clock, counter and programmed recording settings in the event of short power outages, and a light and mirror which flipped down so one could look through the lightly tinted tape flap for visual confirmation of tape remaining if you didn't trust the counter. There was also an available PCM audio option that enabled up to 24 hours of digital audio to be recorded on a tape. (I didn't have that.) I've no idea what *more* the V-71 could've had over the V-70.
It looked like NEC had a "What features do you want on a prosumer VCR?" meeting, then decided to include ALL of them.
Nice ! Remember seeing some of these around, but never saw one work..Just subbed to
see more kool gadgets !
Yay!! Thanks for the sub!
Indeed ! Thanx for the fun videos!
That’s cool, but with no bubbles?… :’(
I know, I like bubbles.
Where do the coins end up?
i asked databits that same question. he said they go into a compartment
i got one and i dont understand if i dont have a tape how do i know it works i put new batteries in no tape of course. when i put a quarter in nothing happens does a cassettee have to be placed inside for it to work?
Yes
Not a cassette. Endless loop cartridge.
I love the coin-op function. But you think they would have put a tone-arm in it. LOL.
I imagine the black spacer is to dampen something that was vibrating on the front. It may put a slight pressure on it.
Yes, could have been the racing turntable in view through the front window that vibrated.
That's a neat little thing.
you have 2 of the rock around the clock tapes and 2 of the only you tapes
My mum had one. She still has some of the tiny tapes but unfortunately no jukebox anymore 😅
I have a jukebox with no tapes...would your mom want to sell her tapes?
also where do the coins go after you insert them into the jukebox?
There is a storage compartment in the bottom. Mine is missing the door for this. Hi Hays!!
To the proprietor of the jukebox of course! That's where they always go. :-)
@nick wallette- lol
@databits- thx
I just bought one. Lights go on, but no sound. Don’t know what’s wrong
Check the drive belt and replace the pads on the tapes.
@@databits The pads seem to be gone but the tape still connects to the reader. Where could I get pads to put into the tapes though?
I wonder what they will do when they show up at your front door after watching this DANGEROUS video ?
sounds like you need this ? printed on a T - shirt
Pocket Rockers for adults.
Cool :)
