VHS Rewinders were for when you had to rapid fire play VHSes to keep people entertained. The idea was that they rewound your VHS tapes while you put the next one in, instead of the normal practice of hitting rewind at the end of the movie. That said: almost every VHS rewinder was over-torqued and had a reputation for ruining older and cheaper VHS tapes, so many people did not like to use them
For some context on VHS rewinders, on a VCR to rewind it took 10-15 minutes for a 2 hour movie, making rewinding a pain in the ass and why the extra charge if you didn’t rewind rented movies. A VHS rewinder on the other hand could rewind the VHS tape in 4-5 minutes while the next VHS tape was in the VCR already playing.
That's wild, I lived well and fully within the VHS era and I really just thought that a rewinder was to save the time of slow VCRs or wasting the time of the next person that wanted to use the VCR. I had no idea it had to do with actual wear and tear on the unit.

My first experience with the DVD rewinder was on an old Blockland map. It had like a hallway full of memes and funny pictures, which included picture of a DVD rewinder. I wonder if anyone else remembers that.
Yes, more like you could rewind a tape without taking up the entire VCR. You couldn't watch another movie or record anything off the tv. Keep in mind rewinding a 2 hr video would take around about 20min. VHS rewinders could rewind faster too.

It also saved wear and tear on your VHS player. If you watched a lot of tapes, all that rewinding would add up.
