@@sanchoproudfoot2 I thought that was her. Thanks for confirming. She goes all the way back to the ‘60s with the Monkees. Great voice. Nice to see Coco out there belting it out with Micky and Nez.
Christian's production and band direction is proof that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...magical music and a great tribute to his father's understated vocal power. It's real. This beats the hell out of any of the canned machine crap programmed music coming out these days.
Agreed, but I was about 14. I always loved this one. Mike was really the only real credited musician. He was established even before the monkees. Old “wool hat”.
Great song, great vocals all around, and Mike was a prolific songwriter, although he didn't write this one. I think a buddy of his did. The secret weapon musician of the band was actually Peter. He was proficient on multiple instruments - electric guitar, fingerstyle acoustic, keyboards (Bach to Jerry Lee Lewis), bass, 5 string banjo, French horn, maybe others. His musicianship is often obscured by his dim-witted personna needed for the TV show character. Live performances revealed his talents.
When this was recorded on a 4 member Monkee band on an early album, it was a less well done song. I guess the way it it is arranged here is so much better and rich. I love it too.
When I saw the Mike and Micky show in Toronto Mike's voice blew me away with how amazing it was (and obviously Micky's voice is always so great)...I had never seen Mike live and he delivered in a big way...it was so amazing...one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life!
Oh, Nesmito. Gracias. Heinlen had a short story called “Door Into Summer” and a reminder of this brought me here. May the Supreme Being grant you the door to eternal happiness and peace (and incidentally, all of us.).💚 Thank you, Michael Blessing. 💚✝️💟⚛️

I was on their security detail at their first reunion in Canada. I actually have several special autographed items etc. Davy let me on the tour bus with them in Cleveland! Ironically, he had his fatal heart attack at our old winter racing training grounds in Florida! Great bunch of guys. Mike didn't tour in those days, as he was a busy performer and TV executive. We are all getting old and it's time to ride off into the sunset! Thanks for the memories George "Circus Boy" D. and Mike! RIP Pete and Davy....
How nice! The Monkees are one group that couldn't just perform the hit singles. Many deep cuts were just as popular. They didn't have this many folks on the original record. RIP Mike, Peter, and Davy. Micky, please stay healthy!
My first concert at 11 - The Monkees in Minneapolis 8/4/1967. So many emotions hearing this. 🙂😭 Age has not changed Mike's voice. But my first crush was Davy Jones. 😍❤

Thank you Michael and Micky for your wonderful music that has always brought me to my happy place even in times of darkness and despair-especially with this COVID-19 pandemic. Wonderful! Who said The Monkees were a cartoon band? They were always way, way more than that. and it is both joyful and poignant to watch this marvellous performance knowing that Mike Nesmith has since died. He looks so healthy, happy and full of joie-de-vivre here. I have always loved Door Into Summer with its gentle, trippy vibe and its colourful psychedelic imagery. Like an instant magic carpet ride back to 1967 when the world was young and the hippy dream was alive and well. Great to see Mickey Dolenz too. Now the last member left to us. He is the guardian of their wonderful legacy. and will be so in his always gracious, articulate and considered way. God bless him, and all those who have left us.
I normally like all kinds of music but typically rock is my thing. However, I recently discovered the monkeys (although I had heard of them) they very much do quality pop music and is a credit that the remaining members still shows after 50+ years when modern pop 'artists' can barely last 10.
The modern music business is not set up to have talent with long careers. Not any more. Now, it's all about who is the "next big thing". They're looking to replace you the second you're signed. Milk what they can from you and go. That's why you see all these musicians doing reality TV and such, or recording on their own label. Major labels don't care about an act that's ten years old. They don't have an interest in cultivating artists. This isn't just my opinion, many in music have said the same thing. Some labels have even come right out and said they don't care about a relationship with an artist for 30, 40, 50 years. Some artists like Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel will admit that they wouldn't have a career at all had they started now.
@kevinheffernan6729 I don't think there is a way out of it now. With iTunes and Spotify and the like, very few artists are making real money (Taylor Swift for sure has the deal of a lifetime!), but the downside to streaming is no one wants an album anymore. There's no room for growth or cultivation. It's become so competitive that people only want one or two songs and it's so easy to get. No one wants "B-sides" or non-singles or non-charting. There's way more money for the label, because they don't have to pay for packaging (as in like physical art for a CD) or shipping CDs to retailers, so they make money (or they wouldn't allow their music to stream to begin with!) and it's still a relatively small percent that wants physical music (and we want it to hold, to look at the lyrics, to look at the art, and to know it's always there, which goes double for movies). The Spotify or iTunes crowd are the fickle ones that only want the newest single and that's it, but it's what the label wants.
I just discovered this live album on Tidal, and then I came here to get a link to share with my sister, and discovered this video. The entire show is really flawless; I was just so astounded at what a fantastic backing band they got together for this show. Reminds me of the Wondermints with Brian Wilson for the Pet Sounds LP; just as good if not better. To hear the "deep cuts" of the Monkees' self-directed LPs FINALLY get their full due live was just enchanting as hell. Awesome performance!
People love to talk shit about The Monkees because they "didn't pay their dues" (allegedly) by doing garage bands and gigs in bars and such, but the truth of it is that all four men had plenty of experience in other groups or musical endeavours long before The Monkees. Just because they didn't know each other as teens and decide to form a band at age 12 is just an excuse from people that don't know anything about the group, and is also hypocritical, since Timberlake wasn't performing in his garage at age 12. He came from a casting call. Britney, Spice Girls, any "boy band", Christina Aguilera, TLC, every last one of them was recruited specifically for their looks and then cultivated by a producer on how to look and act. Just like The Monkees. They didn't play their own instruments? None of the dance-pop groups above even know HOW to play one at all! The Monkees have done live concerts for more than 30 years. To paraphrase Mike before first live concert in 1967, "I'm about to go out in front of 50,000 fans! If I don't know how to play my instrument, we're in a lot of trouble!" Having virtuosos studio musicians cut your album tracks is certainly nothing new. It's still a thing even today. Studio time is expensive. It's why musicians build their own studios. Saves a lot of money. If you have a group of touring musicians who are fluent in several different genres and are widely considered experts or "the cream of the crop", if you will, why wouldn't you have them play on the album? It gets it done faster, which saves money, which means more money on album sales.
@kevinheffernan6729 Micky played guitar in LA bands for a while by his own admission, and Davy had SOME experience on drums, but no one wanted to put the 5'2" Davy in the back on drums. Additionally, to add to your comment on Micky, it was his voice that was so much "the sound" of the Monkees that even at the height of tensions within the band, the others gave their songs to Micky to sing (one of the best examples is Peter Tork's "For Pete's Sake", the closing theme for Season 2 of the show. By the way, The Wrecking Crew is a GREAT doc. I particularly liked how it went into "Hal Blaine Strikes Again", whom I think you're erroneously thinking of when you mention "Paul Blaine", as the name sounds similar and no mention of The Wrecking Crew has a guitarist (or anyone else) named Paul. That notwithstanding, the use of session musicians persists today. It's hardly exclusively a 1960s thing. It's just much more accepted now than it was in the 1960s. Also in your list of bands to mock, you can mock The Beach Boys, since they didn't play their own instruments in the studio. The Wrecking Crew's Wikipedia page goes into great detail on all the groups they played on albums, usually documented by Hal's famous stamp. For The Monkees, Mike Nesmith played guitar and bass, and was noted to be a better bassist than guitarist and Peter played guitar, bass, banjo, harpsichord, keyboards and probably more. That's just what he's been seen playing on Monkees albums. In one of The Monkees reissue albums, it was noted that if the band was set up on actual musical ability, it would be Mike on bass, Peter on guitar, Davy on drums, and Micky as frontman. It also notes that right handed Micky got his first lessons from a LEFT HANDED drummer, leading him to set up his kit essentially "backwards" for years before being properly taught.
No one can sing this song better than Mike Nesmith. what a great song.
Mike was always underrated vocally. Love his voice and singing style.
This is my all time favorite Monkees song.
Same title as my favorite Heinlein novella.
What a gem of a song! Sung live and sounding great ❤
Been watching a lot of these Monkee videos of late. Nez sounded great
Mike's voice hasn't changed since the 60s...

Sound as good as it did 50 years ago. I see Nes' son and Micky's sister in the band.
You'll be missed Mike.
God I miss him, I hope he's making all the music that makes him happy where ever he is now 🕊✨❤

Nicky’s sister Coco (singing backup) is supplying some of the harmony vocals along with Micky.
