Yeah, my catalytic converter was stolen from my Prius last month. Cut right out in broad daylight. The replacement part was over $2,000, luckily insurance covered it. But it's crazy, I had no idea how fast and high the value of rhodium has climbed! Thanks for the informative vid!
There is a gang nicking catalytic converters in Southampton, UK, apparently it doesn't take long to remove them. I was wondering how much of these precious metals are in these catalytic converters.
On Wednesday afternoon, Oregon state senators approved Senate Bill 803 with the hopes of tamping down on the theft. The measure, which passed the Senate 25-2, would prohibit scrap metal business from purchasing the converters except from a commercial seller. It would also require that scrap metal businesses retain the vehicle identification number and license number associated with the converter, making it easier to track.
There is a substitute for the catalytic converter and it was discovered way back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it is called the four spark plug post-igniters where the exhaust gases passes through it while the four spark plugs keeps on igniting against each other inorder to burn up any unburned pollutants and thus rendering them inert.
More reasons why I love my electric Smart car. On my gas car I have painted the exhaust system with a bright lime green paint. I have also engraved the vehicle ID number on the converter. So far so good. In 1980 I bought a user Ford pickup that did not have a CAT. Unfortunately the engine was tuned to lower pollution, as a result this decreased MPG to 9. Luckly this vehicle had limited use.
Well, catalytic converters also were the total elimination of the worst fuel additive, Midgeley's tetra ethyl lead, as the lead would coat the thin coating of catalyst, rendering it useless very rapidly. Still though you will find lead in fuel, there from old plant and tanks, and still slowly poisoning your catalytic converter with time. There actually is a mineable concentration of platinum group metals in the roadside dust, around the same concentration of metal as the ores they are mined from, but spread out over a massive area so uneconomical to recover. Platinum mining is actually often a byproduct of gold mining, copper mining, silver mining or tin and zinc, as well as rare earth mines, as it also gets concentrated with the dense ore, and stripped out as the material is concentrated, till it finally is a part of the final smelting as a high concentrate in the slag from it. Gold mines have platinum as a by product, along with copper and silver mines, while the platinum mines have gold, silver and copper as a by product.
I though they stopped putting catalytic converters on new cars. If not, the ones that usually get stolen are out of trucks or SVUs because they sit higher off the ground, so theives can slide underneath easily.
My brother heard somebody using power tools outside his window at 3am. Looked out the window and saw somebody messing with his neighbors car. By the time he got outside, the people were already gone with the stolen catalytic converter. Happened in under a minute
A guy brings a CC to a surplus buyer...where the hell do you think it came from....STOLEN!! He might as well put up a sign that says "I BUY STOLEN CONVERTERS". Don't forget to take the name of the person who brought it in and report it!
@@ACSReactions Thanks! I appreciate it. It’s good exposure for some of the lesser known channels. PBS Digital Studios should do a crossover event once a year leading to each of their channels. I think it could improve awareness of many channels and interactions. You could even do a little contest or something. Just an idea! Best of luck!
Lol just two days ago i was asking about this from my friends, I didn't understand why these are stolen so frequently (there was a post in a fb group, someone's got stolen but he parked illegally and asked what to do :)))
It can't be coincidence that we've seen a general surge in crime in major US cities. Police morale is at an all time low so they are returning early, quitting or cutting back on patrols, stops and chasing minor criminals. City DAs are refusing to prosecute for low level crimes such as theft and San Francisco even reclassified theft under one thousand dollars to be a misdemeanor instead of a felony. Unfortunately it seems many municipalities have thrown the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to criminal justice reform in the wake of the death of everyone's favorite Fentanyl addict.
When they finally get solid state batteries where they are reliable and a good replacement for liquid lithium batteries, I’ll consider an electric car. To me an all electric car w/lithium liquid batteries car is just a “match box on four wheels.” Those batteries are highly explosive, ignite w/in a couple seconds & the fire burns at over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit!
But the battery packs have plenty of other rare earth elements and cobalt, and the mining of those plus the production of the battery pack takes years to recoup the overall carbon footprint of the vehicle, so choose your poison wisely 😉
@@brentboswell1294 "takes years to recoup the overall carbon footprint of the vehicle" still beats burning gasoline and actively contributing to carbon emissions, which is the opposite of making progress towards recouping carbon footprints.
@@wasd____ Yes, but if the effect is the same you just fool yourself in the end! Now, I don’t know how long a battery pack last before you need to replace it, but I read it’s about 2 and 5 years. That seams to be a very short time. I rather saw that we instead powered our vehicles with hydrogen gas, made by electrolysis. The energy for producing this could be from wind and solar power, thus using the gas as storing device. Fueling your vehicle with hydrogen is much faster then charging a battery pack and you don’t need any rare minerals and metals as withe Litium batteries. You also doesn’t have the added weight of an battery pack added to your vehicle total weight! Sorry for my bad English, I’m not a native speaker.
Wouldn't the intelligent move be to do some research and footwork to find a list of shops and buyers for these stolen catalytic converters? I can't decide if it's it the low IQ requirement for police officers that explains the less than 20% clearance rate for property crimes or if they are just lazy? Or maybe both
Does carbon capture technology work the same way in massive power plants? If not, maybe someday we could scale down that technology for our combustion vehicles.
Great job of explaining the work of Catalyctic Converter !!!! WoW )))) Unfortunately, please do NOT expect from me to watch videos about this manipulated by her own parents silly girl from leftist Sweden. NOT a chance - NO way !!!!

I put the extra spark plug post igniters on my 2010 Hyundai Elantra and took off the catalytic converter. Also raised my gas mileage 19%.

Approximately how many grams of those metals does each catalytic converter have? How many do I need to make a ounce?

Damn is that why my car sounds so shitty starting up? lol
She didn’t mention that a lot of cars/trucks have MULTIPLE Catalytic Converters. My car has 6 of them, 3 on each side.
Why a person die when he get electrocuted?
please explain
