    Btw, today this video saved me from a bad fall: I decided to conquer a hill I never tried before, I was going fast, I started to feel wobbles, I thought about a fall that's about to happen and then, SUDDENLY, in my head, I heard Ethan's voice saying "face your fears..." and so did, fall never happened and I had a lot of fun. Thank you, guys!

    "wobbles can also come from your confidence" oh well that explains it

    • @LoadedBoards
      @LoadedBoards  6 лет назад +105

      You'd be surprised how much of a factor confidence can play in maintaining your stability! When people get scared, they tend to tense up. Though its good to have strong ankles to keep yourself from starting to wobbling, keeping your upper body loose and limber will help you make quick adjustments and cancel out wiggling from the road.
      Also, when you aren't confident of your speeds on the hill you are skating down, you will subconsciously lean back, which makes you unstable.
      Face your fears and stare gravity in the face!

      The last time I thought I was going to wobble, I knew it was a confidence thing, so what I did was just concentrate on what was further down the road in the distance and I pretended that instead of going downhill, I was merely standing on my board and the world was rotating underneath me. A big thanks to the guy who did the rotating!

    usually what i do when foot breaking at high speeds is i kinda squat down, grab the nose of my board (kinda helps prevent speed wobble...kinda) and then i'll have my foot on the road... i squat as if i'm taking a dump..kind of.. also, i don't grab the very tip of the nose but like the sides at the very front, closest to the nose..if that makes sense...? of course if i'm only going like 25mph then i'll foot break the same way you show us here :D

    • @LoadedBoards

      This is good advice! We always called that style of footbraking the Euro-Footbrake, since many racers and downhill riders in the European circuit practice this technique to keep their wheels fresh and grippy for longer!
      The key to this technique is lowering you center of gravity by crouching/squatting as low as you can before starting the footbrake. This naturally puts you into a more stable position to remove one of your feet from the board!
      Thanks for sharing the tip!

    What I recommend if you’re starting out and wanna try a hill, is to go to the bottom and practice from there, and slowly go up. This is especially useful if you say, can get down the hill but need to turn. Once you get used to that and can get down the hill all fine and well, try other hills but don’t do the same thing. See if you have enough skill to get down that other hill and if you can’t, practice more. Also, being motivated helps. Even small things like being in a good mood, wearing nice clothes, or just feeling confident really help your experience out. Hopefully this helps any new boarders

After crashing I didn’t ride for a year and yesterday I picked up my board with one of my old buddies and I realized how epic just cruising was. Going fast is a big part of the sport but, remember longboards are transportation and it’s not about the destination its the journey you take on your board to get there. (If your local forest preserve has paved trails and they permit skaters, it could be an epic cruising day. You can see some epic stuff)

    I am 34 and used to skate. I just got in from a near catastrophic midnight skate. I went down a decent bendy road near my home, and was like "Woo! No sweat. No need to panic. I totally avoided that construction sign in the intersection."
    Then, around that curve....was a bigger hill and I realized I was now barreling down it gaining speed. I literally just started longboarding today after not really skating for 16 years. My brain was like, JUMP. So I jumped off and had to do the fullest sprint I have ever done since high school... Then, my next problem...
    Chasing the board as fast as I could as it shot down the road along the curb. I quickly caught up, but couldn't get down to grab it so I kicked it swiftly and luckily is flipped on to its back.
    You don't truly know yourself until you see how you react in pure adrenaline moments.
    It was thrilling. But I am definitely scoping my roads out beforehand next time AND bring helmet and protective gear. I easily could have taken a hospital grade beating.

    I agree. Ride it out for as long as you can. I've bailed before and got hurt really bad. Riding it out has been fine for me. Get low, try to do quick, mini carves instead of trying to keep the board straight. I've found out it's much easier to control the wobble by going with it and carve it out. Forcing the board to go straight seems to make the wobble worse. My first fall from speed wobble was so bad that I've dedicated months trying to learn how to control the wobble. Literally loosened my trucks up a lot so that I can get speed wobbles from a slower speed so that the fall won't hurt as bad. Just remember to get low, touch the nose of your board if you have to, don't bail unless there are obstacles coming up.

    I really liked your bit about the confidence factor. It sounds cheesy and superficial but it’s 100% real. The more you worry, the more likely it is you’re gonna kiss the pavement.
    I went down a really steep road on my block. I was doing great about 1/3 through, and then the wind started roaring in my face. The adrenaline wore off and I thought “I could die. If I fall off at this speed, I could legit die.” The board started wobbling underneath me and I freaked tf out lol.
    I made it down unscathed but I had to stop and sit for a little while because my heart was pounding.
    I remember watching another kid zoom down a super steep drop and then started hooting and hollering to his friends who were back at the top. He smacked into a brick wall in front of him. I felt the impact.

    This helped me so much-today i was going down this hill that I've never went on before, and when I was going down I felt way too much speed and I was wobbling, I always just turn backwards to slow down the speed because usually no one or nothing is behind me, but this time I couldn't because of the speed. But I tried this stop method and it worked really well! I was gonna get hurt terribly if I tried to turn. Thanks this helped a lot!!

    I was just free skating once and found myself on a pretty steep hill going faster and faster on a board not set up for that AT ALL... I'm proud to say even though I got some major death wobbles and went over a little bridge at the end, I didn't die cause I didn't want to bail no matter what. It all worked out and I ended up skating it a few more times because it was so fun!

I'm actually new to it but I was doing pretty good so I decided to go down a pretty large hill, and I made it but I had to use the foot break once or twice. This time I tried it again without the foot break and my trucks were really loose as I didn't know what could happen, so when I felt the wobbles I didn't know what to do and I lost control and I went flying onto my chest and it hurt like hell but atleast it taught me a lesson. 😄

Got caught by a housewall at about 35 kph-40kph. Big hit on my left side hip and shoulder and a bruised right hand that has left me bedridden for a week. Never had experienced wobbles before so I didn't knew how to handle them. You guys give some good advice, but what about wheel size? I'm noticeably riding faster when I switched from 70 mm to 90 mm.

    • @LoadedBoards
      @LoadedBoards  6 лет назад +12

      The rule of thumb for wheel size and relation to speed goes like this:
      Bigger = Higher Top Speed / Slower Acceleration
      Smaller = Higher Acceleration / Lower Top Speed
      Bigger wheels take longer to get up to speed, but their larger diameter covers more distance per rotation, meaning that will go faster than smaller wheels if the hill will allow it.
      Smaller wheels cover less distance per rotation, so they're able to get to their top speed much faster.
      What you may be conflating is the quicker acceleration from the 70mm wheels compared to your old 90mm wheels. Also, since the 70mm wheels have shallower urethane depth, you might be feeling the pavement more than you did on your 90mm wheels, which gives the illusion of feeling like you are moving much faster.
      If you are bombing hills, we suggest using wheels around the 70mm size since they tend to top out on their roll speed after a little bit. It's safer to learn on and build confidence as you progress to larger hills or larger wheels!

    Footbraking is so dangerous. Coleman sliding is the safest way to stop on a skateboard. When you foot brake, you're basically balancing on one foot. If you get wobble, if you hit a rock, if you hit a crack, and you have only one foot on your board? You're gonna eat it, hard. And maybe get seriously injured if you're going any serious speed. If you Coleman slide, you're gonna safely stop, with three points of gravity contact (front and rear wheels, and a hand down) and you can steer the board while you slide. You can also use sliding and drifting to control your speed. Nobody, nobody should be using footbraking while bombing hill if they like keeping their body intact, and staying out of a hospital.
    The very first thing *anybody* should do before bombing hill, is learn how to slide, and know where, on your board you are using, (and particularly the wheels you are using) the unlock threshold is for a slide. It's the safest way to stop, literally hands down. hehehe

    • @LoadedBoards
      @LoadedBoards  6 лет назад +2

      We agree that coleman sliding is a very effective and safe method of stopping or slowing down at high speeds. The only issue is that there is a very steep learning curve to learning how to do this maneuver. Many people who attempt to learn this may be missing certain components on their boards that make it easier to coleman slide, like the lack of spacers in between the bearings, very loose or extra stiff trucks, and even a lack of grip tape.
      We encourage everyone who wants to bomb hills to wear a helmet and gloves and know how to do a coleman slide, but knowing how to footbrake effectively and efficiently is equally as essential.
      With a coleman slide, you have just as many variables to worry about when initiating this maneuver. If you hit a crack, you board will catch and send you rocketing off of it and rolling down the hill (which is the worst way to fall). If you hit water or pebbles, you can loose control and end up sliding on your back or into a mailbox or even a car. Some may even accidentally place too much weight on the wrong side of the board, causing them to fly over the top. We've also seen people try to do coleman slides and get their hand/puck caught on a road reflector or manhole or pothole and dislocate their shoulders or sprain their wrist or get their entire slide glove ripped off.
      With footbraking, you are able to gradually reduce your speed while moving in a straight line, rather than whipping and sliding all across the road in a sometimes unpredictable pattern. Of course, there is a learning curve to footbraking as well, but it is a much easier one to overcome and requires minimal balance and strength and board control compared to coleman sliding.
      Bombing hills is always dangerous and having an effective way of stopping/slowing down is incredibly important. Having the right gear and knowing different techniques in stopping is essential to live another day to keep riding.

    • @sarakajira
      @sarakajira 6 лет назад +1

      Yo! What are you talking about? I learned how to Coleman slide in an afternoon! Like, maybe if you're learning it in a flat parking lot, but like on an actual steep hill? It's very easy to learn how to slide. If you can carve, put a cutting board on a glove, and place your hand on the ground you can slide. I mean with hard wheels, you can literally take a park board loosen the trucks up to carve with, and if you literally just carve low on a steep hill you're gonna slide. Like the unlock threshold on hard wheels is so low. I learned how to slide in an afternoon! For reals, like this is not that hard. And people have no business bombing hill until they learn how to safely stop unless they wanna get killed or loose some teeth or end up in the hospital.
      I mean if you're in a flat parking lot, and have super soft, side-set carving wheels? Yeah it's gonna take you forever to learn how to slide that way. Those things want to grip, that's their purpose. But with a steep hill, and rock-hard center-set wheels? You just need gloves and an afternoon.
      You need four things to learn how to slide (other than gloves):
      -A board you don't mind tearing the shit out of (and with the grippiest grip tape you can find).
      -A STEEP-ass hill with no cars where you can shut down for a while (and with good pavement on it),
      -And rock hard center-set wheels (the slide unlocks very easily).
      -You also want a pair of pants that can take a beating (like carhart or army surplus)
      Real easy. Start your carve, make sure you're squatting as low as possible (like you're surfing and trailing your hand in the water), practice putting your hand down, and kick your back foot out. When your board goes flying into the curb try again. It doesn't take long. If you need to, just sit facing downhill, and practice putting your weight on your feet and kicking out the slide with both feet back and forth, forcing the board to slide like it's part of your feet. That helps get the feel of the unlock. Hard wheels make it very easy and safe, and they should be center-sets.
      I mean even with soft wheels, if you've got something like Abec 11 Grippins? There's a reason why we call em Slippins, those center-sets will do their job and allow you to drift nice and easily (the best place to learn with softies is a parking garage). But really, a steep hill, loose trucks to carve, and hard center set heels are really all you need. Plus gloves of course.
      The two biggest mistakes people make when learning how to carve are:
      -No hill (or not a steep one, you really need a STEEP hill, like find yourself a paved cliff.)
      -And using soft instead of hard wheels.

      Thanks for the detailed breakdown on how to coleman slide, Sara. For those reading this comment thread, here is a video we did that goes in depth into the little details of sliding and breaking traction: ruclips.net/video/--34ICM9rU0/видео.html
      Once again, we agree that coleman slides are a very effective way to slow down, especially once you've mastered how to do them in a controlled fashion.
      That being said, we wouldn't want to withhold any knowledge or techniques that can assist people in slowing down from great speeds. Everyone is different and some new and old skaters do not have the same control over their balance and weight distribution to learn a technique like the coleman quickly and easily as you can, let alone do it in a real world setting where they would need to loose speed to avoid injury while simultaneously avoiding traffic and obstacles.
      After spending time teaching new riders over the years, we've seen first hand that some are able to pick up the coleman slide very quickly, while others it takes a little longer. But even if they learned to do the coleman slide or not, we also taught them how to footbrake just to be safe. Everyone is different and having more than one way to stop is very useful when out skating the busy streets.
      Thanks for listing what is needed to do the slides. You have a very good point in wearing shreddable pants, shorts do no one any favors when learning to coleman. Expect the people who make the shorts, they are happy to have a future returning customer, we suppose.

    • @sarakajira
      @sarakajira 6 лет назад +2

      So this is why I said there's a need for a STEEP hill. A very steep hill will allow someone to unlock a slide in under ten feet or so, due to the hill grade. Which will allow them to kind of "scooch" down hill practicing small slides.
      The reason why foot braking should not be used when bombing hill, is the speed is too great when doing something like that to effectively stop safely using foot braking.
      Picture this: Imagine a scenario where you're bombing hill, and you're going to eat it. It's guaranteed in this situation.
      Option A, is you're standing upright on one foot at 50+ mph, when your board starts to wobble and is going to fly out from under you. When you fall, you're falling like a timber tree, with the top of your torso, hitting the pavement hard, and you're going to tumble really hard, an possibly be seriously injured or even killed.
      Option B, is you're down low already in a 3 point contact position. You loose control of the board out from under you, but you are quickly able to bring your second hand down too so now you have two hands to help you slide along while your body comes to a stop. It won't be graceful but at least you didn't "fall" you just lost your board. You might loose some skin and tear your pants up pretty bad, but you're likely to be okay.
      Foot braking is for when you're cruising around the boardwalk, or going for a gentle cruise in flat areas around the neighborhood, or campus, etc. It's not for serious speed. It's not meant for that, and it cannot safely control that. While yes, it's theoretically possible for a good foot braker to stop themselves at high speed, that same skilled foot braker, if they eat it at high speeds is still going to eat it a lot harder, and more dangerously than if they were already down and lost their board doing a coleman slide, with gloved pucks already on contact with the ground.
      I understand what you're saying about weight distribution, but bombing hill is not a beginner skill. It shouldn't be promoted as though any newb can just pick up a board and day one start bombing hill. Really gentle hills maybe, but for serious speed, they need to know how to Coleman slide. It could save their life.

    You could also use old or crappy bearings that will have more friction making it so you don’t go as fast in the first place. Also small wheels mean a lower top speed but a higher acceleration. Big wheels smaller acceleration but a higher top speed

    • @LoadedBoards
      @LoadedBoards  6 лет назад +2

      We have seen old crappy bearings with a lot of friction heat up so much from skating down hills that they actually melted the cores of the wheels they were in. The next thing that happened was the person fell on their face.
      Using good bearings and learning how to slow down are essential for bombing hills.

      Depending on how flexible a board is, you may be able to bring it to some high speeds and still maintain control. speed wobs can come from your base plate being a to high degree, when freeriding I ride 50 degree pairs V2 an if i go to fast on them i get wobs even if I have tight trucks and hard bushings. so for DH I use a 43 baseplate in back and 50 in front.

    • @LoadedBoards
      @LoadedBoards  6 лет назад +1

      This is true, but to an extent. Higher degree trucks are inherently more twitchy at high speeds, needing less input from the rider to get the board to turn drastically. However, it comes down to personal preference. Some of our riders are all about low degree trucks for downhill and freeride (Ethan rides 43 degree front and back) others like directional setups (Kalil rides 50 degree front, 35 degree back) and other people like very turny trucks with stiffer bushings (Alberto rides 50 degree front and back).
      Comes down to what you are used to and comfortable with, but the general rule is lower degree trucks are safer at higher speeds for people just starting out!

    Great video. Been fun watching you guys and it's taught me quite a bit. Not sure I agree with the "flexi board" bit though. I bomb hills on my 48" Goddess pintail, and I find it more stable that the board I have that is specifically designed for downhill.

    • @LoadedBoards
      @LoadedBoards  6 лет назад

      Many of our riders started out riding the classic pintail shapes, specifically the Goddess of Speed from Sector 9. Though this board is a bit out-dated when it comes to all the modern construction techniques and designs, it still works well for bombing hills, MAINLY because the wheelbase is so long and inherently stable.
      But, at certain speeds, flexy boards become too dangerous for skating big hills. It can still be done, but it takes a lot of attention and care on the rider to make sure they are staying stable. Keep you weight focused near the front truck and you should be fine, just avoid hitting any bumps or lumps in the road so you don't trigger the flex!

If there is a massive hill on my way I will always tighten my trucks. I learned my lesson about that maybe a year ago. I was bombing this hill by my house and I forgot to tighten my trucks and I got speed wobbles at the bottom and ate shit going about 25 mph. Here are a few tips to help out:
      1. Make sure you stand on your front foot and footbrake with your back foot.
      2. Tighten up your back truck a little bit. About a half turn.
      3. Start footbraking from a low speed and brake harder if you start speeding up. Easier to slow down this way, then bombing and then trying to footbrake.
      4. Buttboard! Sit on the front of your board, just behind the front truck and footbrake with both of your feet!
      Hope this helps!

    Hope someone can answer me, thanks in advance! I am starting longboarding, I have only skateboarded before. I would want to get downhill board, but is that also good for freeriding/cruising around the city?

    Also carve out of death wobble works as well

      Make sure to carve very wide and slowly!

    I was riding down my street on a skateboard and I was using my toe to slow down and my foot slipped off my board, let's just say that I made it down the hill in a painful way

    I found a new passion for longboarding. But when I'm done skating for the day my leg that I use to push myself is so sore and hard to move. Can u give me any advice on what shoes to use. ? I hav classic hightop Van's that I use but I feel like itsnot enough padding for comfort when ur foot slaps the concrete! Lmao.

    2:00 I wish I could have watched this vid sooner I’m a self taught longboarder and I had to bale doing ~20mph one thing try to go into a roll don’t try to run off it like I did it’s not fun. (I had rocks go into the base of my palm)
