While your logic is sound on its surface, I have one major issue with it.
The problem with this view is the assumption that people never grow. I believe that we need to keep these friendships and pathways of communication open because people can, and often do, learn the errors of their ways over time. Giving some distance is fine, but just shutting them out is not going to help win hearts and minds.

    I totally agree.

The political landscape has become us versus them. It’s more important that our side win. That’s the real problem.

It is stupid that politics be put aside all the time. I don’t hate people for they politics, as long as you can treat people right…it is annoying that people act like we should hide from our political opinions though.

I slightly disagree. There are *some* politics that can be set aside. If you disagree with me about tax codes or copyright law we can still be friends. But if you disagree with me that everyone should have the same rights and the ability to live their lives undisturbed then we have irreconcilable differences.
The issue is that people with monstrous politics have turned "politics" and "difference of opinion" into euphemisms so they don't need to say their horrid beliefs out loud. "Would you really disown me because of a difference of opinion?" is a lot more palatable than "would you really disown me because I don't believe you should be able to get married and live publicly as yourself?"

You can have strong personal conviction and not care about politics. Politics sucks, it’s a losing battle.
