Stock footage from professional meteorologist and storm chaser Matt Grzych, who captured this amazing footage of the Moore, OK tornado as it moved into
the city. As the tornado moved closer to his position, it turned from chasing the storm to escaping the storm, as small debris started to fall on him while he was stuck in traffic trying to get out of the path of the tornado.

What kills me is when people are still obeying traffic laws when a tornado is hot on their Trail. I don't get it. It's okay to break a traffic law while you're being chased by a tornado I think the police officers will give you a pass.

I agree Justin Brink. I sure wouldn't care about getting a ticket my life is more important & I don't think the cop is going to stop you during a tornado. That was interesting turning the 2 lane road into a one way , which they should of done sooner.

@@jackmehoffe9662 please do some research before spouting off about things you don't know. There is nothing he could have done for them. Do you think he could just stand there and wave his arms and the tornado would change directions? These people are well aware of the tornado. They're likely in their basements or shelters and knocking on their door would draw them from their safe place and risk their lives. The ONLY way to know where a tornado is with 100% accuracy is to have eyes on it. That's why professional storm chasers work with news and weather stations, police departments, etc, and they're often on speed dial because we're ALL depending on them to tell us where it is. They also are responsible for a lot of the research that has changed protocol and our very understanding of how tornados work, which has literally saved thousands. Chasers are typically the very first responders, the chase ends when you come upon damage. That is the #1 rule in storm chasing. In other words, everything you said is incorrect.

Well done; this is why in suburban chase's I wont get too close, at least a mile away, as I've lived in Moore for 30+ years, and KNOW how quickly "everyone" comes out to get their shot..even knowing the back roads dont always help 100% of the time.. I LOVE storm chasing and meteorology, but wont risk my life unnecessarily..
YOU Sir, kept your cool and situational awareness as well.. honestly though even though it looked like RFD Idve gotten a little "concerned" when it was apparent you were in the southern flank of outer wind fields with the debris...

Everybody who witnessed that tornado was experiencing thoughts & emotions in their own way. There are no scripts to follow. The fact is that this tornado DID follow a similar path as the May 3, 1999 monster, and this tornado was VERY similar in size & power to the May 3, 1999 tornado, and this tornado DID cause many casualities too.
So, OF COURSE experienced storm chasers, journalists & town residents are going to spot the parallels and comment on the similarities! Duh! How can you be critical of the people who saw the similarities & said so during the video? Duh!

The thing that makes me wonder is not only were some of them trying to just get out of the way of it. Before it hit Moore directly, I remember the Meteorologists on the TV broadcast telling people they had to be underground or out of the way of it. Some of the people on this road were people who probably abandoned their homes and survived. A tornado with that much power, and doing that much damage a closet or bathroom is absolutely not an option.

Oh I'm so glad someone else thought it sounded like a jet engine. I've lived through two tornadoes, and the first one was the last F5 to hit in 1974. We awoke at 5:35 AM to that sound along with thunder that sounded more like rifle shots near by. Most likely it was branchless lightning, but I couldn't say for sure. All I knew was that there was a tornado coming right towards us, and we didn't have enough time to get downstairs into the basement. We got hit by the edge. The house across the street and one over to the left of ours was completely leveled with nothing left but the plumbing that the family was clinging to when they were rescued. Everyone survived, and I'm convinced that it was because that family knew what to do in the event of a tornadol. I'll never forget that strong pine sap smell, and there may also have been some cedar, too. Horrific situation, and we're glad we made it.

It seems that Moore is targeted more by tornadoes than any other town. I wonder if they could put a traffic grounding, and tell people to stay wherever they are in a sturdy building or get in to one, and stay put until the threat of the tornado passes. Then, they can get out on the road, of course, even if they have to find an alternate route to their destinations. Nothing could be worse than to have to sit in traffic, when people should be moving. They should be treating even the lights as four-way stops and getting to safety asap. I was utterly terrified as I listened to this video, because you were trapped.

I looked on Google Maps the other day and it showed Copyright 2014, and the siren was still there with NO DAMAGE! I'm just wondering what the other sirens I'm hearing are. I hear the initial 2T22 he drove by, there's another 2T22 that was hit by the tornado, and I'm also hearing a modulator. However, I'm wondering what that other siren I'm hearing is, I have a map and within the general proximity of Moore that he is driving through there are 36 sirens out of 181 in the OKC Metro Area. At 5:00 I hear a modulator, but I hear another high-pitched siren that is not a modulator.

      Matthew Kowal
It could have been a Federal Signal 2001 or a Thunderbolt at a high setting. Moore is one of the few municipalities lately that still uses Thunderbolts.
You also caught the Modulator he passed as he entered a parking lot that, as he retreated back the way he came later on, it was now going off, right?

    • @mattkowal90

I heard the modulator that was to his North, the modulator that he passed the first time that was silent, but when he retreated was going off was not the one I was talking about.

I really feel for the people who have to deal with these storms. I live in Canada and we get relatively no bad weather compared to the U.S. We get no hurricanes, the occasional very small tornado, and some bad winter storms, but nothing strong enough to completely sweep your house away...

2 lane Road, bumper to bumper traffic what could go wrong with an F5 tornado in your view. What amazes me is the weather people were warning people in the area 3 days before the event that everything was in place for this to happen but yet everyone went about business as usual like nothing's going on. I've heard all the excuses but truthfully when you live in a place where volcanoes earthquakes tornadoes are frequent I think I would be a lot more alert and plan ahead. Bless all the people of Oklahoma that they never have to experience an event like this ever again but sad to say it seems like that part of Oklahoma is tornado Central.

at 13:44 the kid does exactly the wrong thing "turn the car around". The tornado was going to miss him if he stayed where he was, but instead of driving straight, which would have taken him away from the path of the tornado, he actually unwittingly moved right directly into it. Luckily the tornado's x direction proved to change directions so, everything worked out in the end. At least for this time...

I have gone to the store plenty of times with them going off but not in the past couple of years. Now when they go off we go outside and look for a tornado. People are so much like animals. Deer in this case. Its as though they feel the need to cross a tornadoes path to feel like they are escaping it. I see it time and time again. Going in the same relative direction, where the pathes would (not at same time necessarily) diagonally cross, then continue on. Like both making a letter X and both starting from the bottom. What i dont understand is- dude, just turn around . Theres no traffic going that way, and then youd be going the OPPOSITE direction of the tornado, and you'd be behind and out of its potential path quite easily. Deer out in fields often times will run 100s of yards , at an angle, and cross ahead of you driving, in order to escape. They need to cross your path in order to feel like they are escaping. This is one of the reasons deer get hit by cars. When all its gotta do is just go the opposite direction, or even just stand still. But just like this dude and the heard of other folks around him, lets escape the tornado by running the same direction as it.....🤦‍♂️

  • @Justin-rv9nc
    @Justin-rv9nc 3 года назад +1

It always amazes me that in all these videos I watch these people stay in their lanes lol. I know at the end they are driving on the wrong side but they needed to be doing that as soon as the tornado was directly behind them. If you are ever in that situation get yourself out as fast and as safe as possible. When your life is in danger road rules go out the window. Example, I'm about to be hit by a tornado.... I really hope this light turns green before it kills me......
