I wish I would have thought to myself. My dad was gone. How would I feel not being able to talk to him anymore ? I wish I would have talked to him sooner. Life is too short to hold grudges. Thank you for all the love and support.

I lost both parents and both best friends in the last few years. I feel your pain. I don't know if the pain becomes easier to deal with or if it simply becomes a normal part of your life. Either way you keep moving forward.
Good luck with this chapter. I'll be here with you.

Jefe, im sitting here an the fence whether or not I should drive 4 hours to meet up with my Dad and brother and cousins and uncles to spread my recently deceased Uncles ashes at our family homestead. I've got a few justifiable reasons to not go. Watching your video (it popped up on my feed for important reasons) put the reasons why i SHOULD go in the forefront of my heart and mind. My Dad is 80 this year. I won't get many more of these opportunities to be with him on the homestead. Thank-you for your honesty and heartfelt video. It was all the encouragement I needed.

I never imagined how much it would hurt as an adult to lose our parents. It hurts to see then grow old, weaken and frail, but the pain of losing them and month after month, year after year never seeing them, hearing their voices again still hurts so much. What ever your parents did, they made a good man.

Hi Jefe…I just subscribed to your channel and watched this as my first video. I’m a 64 yr old retired airline pilot and I’m amazed at how close to home this video was and how hard it hit me. I just moved to Hurricane (I promise not to tell anyone how amazing it is) from Sarasota,FL right before the last hurricane made a direct impact. Most of my life was spent in Boulder, CO and I did my best to raise a family there while flying mostly internationally. After the inevitable divorce my son was 12 and my daughter 15 and my former wife decided not to relocate to any of the places the airline decided to base me during my career. Like you I lost touch little by little with my parents and kids under the pressure of constant travel. My parents passed away and I was fortunate enough to be there for the funerals like you were for your dad. I couldn’t afford to move back to CO after retirement but watching you and Matt on RUclips helped me choose Hurricane. It’s only a 10 hour drive to see my “kids” in CO and I’m trying to slowly get back into their lives. Like you said, we’re only here for a short while and I don’t want to waste another second away from the only family I have left. Thanks for sharing your story, it couldn’t have been easy. Us men are supposed to “grow a pair” and get over it, but I think we deserve more.

I forgave my dad 20 years ago for his sins that destroyed our family and made me a very angry person. It was the best thing I could have ever done as it set me free from the hate that had consumed me. And the key to forgiving him came after I received the forgiveness for my own sins from my faith in Christ. He saved me, and in turn I could reach back and love my dad again. Great video. Beautiful country. Glad you reconnected with your family and started on your own journey to heal.

I love this reply! It is very similar to my story! I was a bit fortunate that my dad’s sins (although extremely gross) never destroyed our family…I really hated him before when I was a lost teenager, left home at 18, joined the Air Force. Served for 8 yrs. In my ignorance at the time, at my high school grad/ going away party I told my brother that I was going to tell the old man to go to hell that I never wanted to see him again, just before I’d leave to BMTS. Am so very grateful my brother talked me out of that! My 1st permanent duty station in the Air Force was in San Antonio Tx. was there for 2 yrs… I got way lost in those two years! Wicked crazy life! Be Praise The Dear Lamb of God! that he reached way down in the garbage and pulled me out! From Tx I was reassigned to Guam. Just about 6weeks after landing on that little island, I received The Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour! About 30mins later was the next time I saw my folks. At that time my dad and I spent a lot of time together and I was able to tell him about how I felt when I left home and that I am super grateful (now that I clearly understood what it was the Scriptures say about hell) that I never told him to go there. From 1996-1999 was my Bible school. From 99-2001 deputation, have been doing mission work here in the Philippines since 2001.

Jefe, I really appreciate your video. I’ve been away from home since 1987 and can really relate to what you are saying and experiencing in this situation…I’ve been on the mission field since 2001… saw May dad only 2 times from then until he died… during the time we’d visit back home for a month or so… my dad died on 1 Apr 2006. I miss him a lot! Am very grateful for the things he taught me. Sure wish he were still around am certain I could learn more from him! God bless you Jefe. And thank you for posting this video! Thanks for showing folks such a private thing…

I loved the way you began by saying that both you and your father shared responsibility for the relationship not working out. That shows wisdom. I’ve had the same issue, and it took me years to come to the same realization. When that happens, peace surrounds you.

You have my deepest sympathies . Losing parents is the hardest thing ever, but a part of life.
I lost my Dad in 2010 , my Mom in 2015, both at the age of 92 . I was far from being the perfect son and I regret my mistakes, but I changed for the good. I made changes in my life and got to spend a lot of time with them before they left. We were very close when they passed.
I'm 73 now and I still have many fantastic memories of them to keep me going.
I am glad that you realized how important family can be and spent time with family to help you heal.
I pray you will find peace and know that your folks loved you and you have become the man they always knew you could and would be. Also know that there are MANY of us out here that have a TON of respect for you for being who you are. Don't ever change !!
Wishing you all the success in everything you do and hold on to your memories !!! You are now at the top of my favorite You Tube list Keep up the great work !!

Sorry for your loss, Jefe. I know it well after both mom and dad are gone. Going through all their stuff really brings it all out. A lifetime of memories. You will have a choice. Wander off alone or embrace your family. I feel you'll make good! choices

It’s great to see that the healing began with family and just doing things that connected you to your dad.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful touching story. Just know you are not the only one out there that lives with similar emotions and feelings and regrets. I too have those same feeling. I lost my best Friend/Brother suddenly on April 15 th. He had a massive heart attack and I miss him everyday. I miss our text messages. I miss our phone calls. I miss hanging out together and just sitting sometimes saying nothing.
I at times call his cell phone just to hear his voice.
Again thank you for sharing your beautiful memories

Thank you for sharing. Family is one of the most impotent things in life. I'm in my late 50's, we're 6 siblings and we see each other at least once a month and sometimes more often, as well as our nieces and nephews. we lost our father over 30 years ago when he was only 55 years old. Never give up your family.

Deepest condolences to you and yours Jefe. When my sister passed in June of this year I took time to go back to our old neighborhood to visit memories both good and bad. It did help especially around the time of her service.

I lost my father in 2002. It’s still hard to believe it’s been 22 years but I was lucky enough that I moved home six years before he passed away and got to go hunting with him every year and even got to go hunting with him with his oldest grandson and his first hunting trip something we will never forget! It always helps to go back when you’re an adult and talk to your parents when you understand what they went through that’s a conversation that should never be missed and I am glad I got to have it! My brother and father had a falling out and did not talk to much and he missed that , then he was gone in 2016 , at 48 , and I can tell you even years later I miss being able to talk problems out with both of them !!!!!! ❤

I’m so sorry for your loss, I completely understand not being in touch with your family, and I’m always telling myself I’ll regret it one of these days. I grew up in a small town in northern Utah. I always thought I was meant for the city, so once I graduated from high school (95 to age me) I moved to Long Beach ca. That was a massive culture shock, I lasted down there for almost a year. It took me until 2012 moving from place to place, never feeling at “home” that I finally moved back to my small town. I’ve been home ever since, I don’t think I’ll ever leave again, unless it’s to another small town. No more city life for this gal. Being gone that long I completely understand not knowing anyone anymore. I used to know everyone, now we don’t even know a few of our neighbors across the street. The town has grown so much (more than doubled I’d say in population and homes), that I miss the way we grew up. We still don’t have any stoplights, but it’s not far off. Thank you for taking us on your adventures, I’ve spent a small amount of time in Monticello and blanding in 97, and haven’t been back since, I’m sure it’s changed a lot, but it’s definitely beautiful down there.
