I still cry a bit inside whenever I see Stan Winston's prototype designs for the Tristar Godzilla movie that never was.

We all do, all us fans do, but I’m at least glad the MonsterVerse is at least paying homage to what that 1994 film could have been. I’m sure Stan Winston would have loved it.

@@wolfpredator1000 it looked like Godzilla. The actual 90's Hollywood Godzilla movie had a giant iguana with a Jay Leno chin who ran away from gunfire. Stan Winston's Godzilla updates the classic look while still honoring the original design.

So that's the guy responsible for Ken Park. I remember the controversy that film sparked in Australia in the early 00s. I remember this Aussie film critic who had her own show with some other guy (similar to Siskel & Ebert) that tried to do public viewing of this film in protest of its ban and the cops showed up to stop it and confiscate her bootleg copy of the dvd. Shit was crazy back then.
And it sucked that Stan Winstons toy vision never took off. I loved toys as a kid and having one of his would have blown my mind. I'd say the reason it never took off was that it never had a cartoon to be its "toy commercial." Kids mostly played with toys and cartoons were their market not low budget movies.
It's sad that he died relatively young. His movie special effects made my childhood and I love this somewhat homage to an unknown passion he had that none of us even knew about. RIP Stan Winston ❤

Not gonna lie, Stan Winston's "How to Make a Monster" is like the definition of a guilty pleasure for me.

@@aaronkelly1762that was how I saw Teenage Caveman. I knew the original from MST3K and saw it scroll by on the TV Guide Channel, and assumed it would be a straight remake. I was not prepared, and I felt legitimately icky after watching it.
On the positive side, I am pretty sure it introduced me to The Misfits. That “Where Eagles Dare” needle drop is probably the only redeeming thing in the movie.
The Suffering was SO good. (And the monster designs were a big part of that.) If the sequel had been the game it should have been, everyone would consider it a classic series.
Agreed. I never played the sequel but I really liked The Suffering.
@Murphyd0g The original felt like it was planned out carefully. The sequel felt as if they came up with the idea after the success of the first but never originally planned to make it. It's buggy, and it frankly kind of cheapens the first game by explaining things left unexplained or vague in the original. The enemy designs are reused (though altered), the setting is a lot less frightening, and the big baddies have some terribly clichéd motivations.
That said, if you're a fan, there's a lot of good stuff in the sequel, and it might be worth finding for cheap.
@@Louis-wp3fq I was a HUGE fan of the first one and carried the walkthrough with me at school just to look at the art. The sequel disappointed me. It felt like a slog and had nothing new to offer. I wonder why they never made the movie though!
The Suffering was a great communal game, a handful of friends crowded around a TV late at night playing together.
It's fascinating that 1950's monsters The Blob, Godzilla and The Creature From The Black Lagoon did so well that they were all still going strong by the 1980's (The Blob remake, Godzilla 1985 & The Monster Squad), and Godzilla has never stopped making movies that seem to get better and better (Godzilla Minus One).
This was a deep dive into some of the most influential stuff I watched as a kid and who else can remember Jon Cho before he was in Harold and Kumar?

I was just watching a channel with over 6 million subscribers and I couldn't finish the video. It was unbearable. While channels like yours with a few hundred thousand subscribers in comparison aren't annoying and don't give me the sense of wasting my time. Is actually interesting and fun to watch without acting like a child

I will watch literally anything Stan Winston is involved in. It doesn't matter how shitty the movie is in terms of plot and other characteristics, I will watch it simply to enjoy Winston's wonderful effects.
Same. He was a legend. We will never have another like him.
He had great designs, I think the industry to this day is still trying to emulate them. None are really interesting like his work was.
@@ruffusgoodman4137 What set Winston apart was his willingness to think outside the box when it came to familiar creatures like werewolves, vampires, and aliens. FX artists today seem more hidebound and unwilling to work outside of norms.

@ruffusgoodman4137 Seeing how a lot of effects guys got their start in his studio iam not surprised his protégés worked on alien 3 and thorought the alien franchise even the thing prequel which the studio messed up their effects
I like all the Creature Features, but I'm freakin' crazy about "She Creature"! Rufus Sewell and Carla Gugino are great and Rya Kihlstedt as the mermaid is chilling. The fully transformed Queen Mermaid is one of Winston's most impressive creations. Genuinely enjoyable film in all respects.

"Toys" is a generous way too describe Todd's action figure lines of the 90's and mid 2000s. They were more like very nice vinyl statuettes. They're a lot more poseable and well done know-a-days IMO but those early ones didn't have much posing options.
Really sad that Stan Winston couldn't get his side project stuff off the ground. I had a few of the Realm of the Claw ones. they were really well sculpted.
The first spawn toys were very poseable - more so than anything toybiz or Kenner were releasing at the time. They had vinyl statues too but they were smaller, like 3.5-4 inches in size and solid vinyl. I still have my spawn though due to humidity and being stored in a box in my garage for years his cape is gummy for lack of a better term like tacky to the touch
I don't understand why didn't Todd double down with Stan's partnership. Both seem to be great entrepreneurs, back then they should have ridden the lightning

Same as always. I'm a renowned cinephile who binges bad movies, films riffed on MST3K, fan of foreign cinema, and someone who adores horror.
I loved Rick Baker for his work on An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Hellboy 2004. A decade after his previous involvement with Maleficent, I plan on having him develop the practical effects to a Devil May Cry movie I'm pitching to Sony's subsidiary Screen Gems, in addition to semi-CGI, and for Sam Raimi to direct. Still working on the script tho!

Earth vs the Spider was the first true B-movie I stumbled upon as a teen, and I loved it.
As a fan of Stan Winston, I, for one, really appreciate hearing about his Creature Feature endeavors. I somehow missed these, and now have more of his work to look forward to. I think it's also good to let folks know that, even as talented as Stan's work is, cool ideas don't always play out well. Did it stop him? Did he quit and fade away? Hell no! The man's a legend!

I remember watching these back in the day. I'm a fan of Stan Winston's work, so I loved seeing his takes on these movies. I had heard of that one cat themed toy line, but didn't know about the others. I'm not much of a collector but those designs do look really cool.

This is one of the many reasons I love this channel: I'd watched She Creature years ago and liked it, but I had no idea it was part of a series of related movies that also look fun. Plus, I didn't know that Stan Winston was connected to The Suffering!
I think Stan was a big, imaginative kid trapped in a man's body. Everything from his youth pours out into his work. So glad we got to see him at his pinnacle. Thanks for this Exploring. Never even knew about any of this and Predator is my favorite film😮
I wasn't expecting these for the exploring videos, I adore "How to Make a Monster", "Earth vs. the Spider" and "The Day the world ended". The McFarlane toys from those films are wicked awesome replicas but unfortunately, I never got them since they were and still are kind of expensive.
I'd imagine it was a bummer for Stan to see that Pumpkinhead figure released by someone else. But then again, it's showbiz, and Stan was a veteran of the industry. He might have looked at it like it's all in the game.
The suffering is a great game. You both feel like a unstoppable badass and still soil your pants when you hear certain enemies come close lol.
I'm gonna watch those Creature Feature films right after. Thank's Cecil for another excellent one.
I saw She Creature late one night on some channel and thought it was a great low budget horror film. I found it to be very much in the dark fantasy/Lovecraftian mold with a great concept, terrific atmosphere and a wonderful cast. I had no idea it was a remake of anything and I knew nothing about the Creature Feature series.

Oh man, you got me on memory lane here! I remember watching Creature Features like 2003/2004 i believe and my top favs are How to make the Monster and Earth vs. The Spider, haven't seen The Day the World Ended, She-Creature i only got part of it but not all and Teenage Caveman....meh, was kinda lackluster.
Stan Wiston's someone you gotta admire and look up to since he's like us who like to see monsters, comics and action figures. If Stan was still among us and try to make own toyline in this era i bet he would've a better shot since we have social media he would've been trending on Twitter and Instagram and i admit i have not known the other toyline he released back then, i knew of Creature Features but that was it which sucks since i would've bought some of those figures.

I remember seeing She Creature and Earth vs. The Spider on the Syfy channel a long time ago. I really enjoyed their dark, gloomy atmosphere and was WOW'd by the creature effects! I'm even more impressed now knowing these films were shot in only 18 days!

When i was looking up the trailer for "teenage cave man" on RUclips, i stumbled upon good bad flicks. And I've been a fan ever since.

Thanks for putting this video together, Cecil. What a great topic to revisit. The Halloween season of 2001 was certainly put on the back burner because of 9/11 and it is totally understandable. While I do remember renting the Creature Features on VHS at the time, it didn't feel like a fun time to enjoy anything gory or trashy. It's too bad that this affected Stan Winston's plans, because he was such an amazing talent. I had no idea about the Winston toy lines either. Always appreciate the work and research you put into these videos.

I never realized Stan Winston had these toy lines. I loved seeing them, along with the nostalgia of not only 50's low budget flicks, but 90's/early 2000's ones too. You hit the nail on the head, though. It's tiresome to see movies these days needing the budget of a small country with very little imagination put in.
That was great! I was totally unaware of any of this, although I remember the dvd covers in the rental shops. Nice to know my first impression of Larry as a filthy pervert seems to be on the nose. Love the exploring series!

I'm a little surprised to hear that Winston's figures didn't sell that well; I remember them getting a HUGE spread in ToyFare magazine. and I personally thought the 'Realm of the Claw' and 'Extreme Gargoyles' lines had a lot of potential! In many ways, Winston was somewhat ahead of his time in that department as well, since " artist's concept" -action-figures have become a pretty significant minority in the collector-world! Thanks for the info! =)

Trojan War is a underrated teen comedy. Blew my mind catching it randomly on cable back in the day.
I remember seeing these toys in a big biography that I read as a kid, it was so crushing to read how they didn't quite take off, I really wish studios would take these kinds of risks more often and let other creative talents shine through

I always thought the Creature Features series of films would make for a great video. Excellent job chronicling them all. My personal favorite is Earth Vs. The Spider. I saw that on Sci-Fi when I was a kid and it really stuck with me. And I legitimately think it's a nice companion to the Fly films from the 80's. She-Creature is a close second. That's a fun one as well. The other three I honestly don't remember much about except that I really wasn't a fan of Teenage Caveman.

Stan Winston was truly one of the genius effects wizards. The man created The Terminator, the Alien Queen, the monster in Leviathan, Pumpkinhead and of course the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” among numerous other projects. The world lost a legend when he passed (ironically in the same year Michael Crichton also passed away) , but the fact cinephiles like us remember his work and his protégés continue his legacy with a school and the studio he created
I love these films. I have all of them on DVD. I also have the action figure of the monster from How to make a monster.
Stan Winston was a true artist genius. Definitely a member of the Mt. Rushmore of SFX.
This is a really good episode of "Exploring ". I remember first hearing about the Creature Features toyline through Toyfare and Wizard Magazine growing up. Also, you forgot to mention that Julie Strain was in "How To Make A Monster" too.

I absolutely loved McFarlane’s Movie maniacs, NECA’s Cult Classics and of course Stan Winston’s Creature Feature Figures. I had the entire line plus extras to repaint. Had the Blood Wolves line too, but never heard or saw those extreme gargoyles and I am extremely disappointed they weren’t a bigger release of those. Based on the previous figures I can only imagine how detailed and massive those gargoyles were. Thanks for bringing those to my attention and for the in depth review of the creature features.

The only one of these I knew about was "How to make a monster" and I remember enjoying that so much I recommended it to all my friends. Of course, I also hosted "B-Movie Theatre" nights back in the day, so take that recommendation with that context in mind.

There’s a couple that come to mind, but the one you reminded me of was Earth vs the spider. I watched this when I was younger. Had no idea Sam Winston *may god rest his soul* made these. I was very familiar of Stan Winston's monster movies from the early 2000s from their toys that were abundant at Toys R Us. As a store associate, I would regularly put these on the end cap.
That’s what I always like about this channel, gives me new movies to want to check out

I have NEVER heard of any of this. I love Stan Winston and I used to always look up Macfarlane Toys stuff, so I'm shocked I never heard of this movie and toys series.

I've actually seen all of them. Dad got them from his job at Blockbuster. I will say, they are cheesy, but the fun kind of cheesy, I really enjoyed them, and is a shame we didn't get more. Also enjoyed this video. Thank you.

what interesting stuff.. i knew about the movies but never knew about the toy line part! Stan was def the Man and we all miss him very dearly. the world of practical effects lost a good one way too early.
While there was a market for adult collectable toys back then, it isn't what it is now. Today, those monster toys would probably be very successful.

honestly seeing a video on these figures was cool. always been a fan of stan winston and his talented team. i have a few of the realm of the claw figures. honestly wish the toys were successful enough to keep going.

Winston hadn't made anything with his own two hands for decades. He had a studio and a team. He deserves the credit for assembling and managing a great team - but his team members deserve a huge chunk of his artistic accolades
