    ***** This tutorial uses Ubuntu as the testing environment and follows the folder structure for Ubuntu. If you are using a QNAP or Synology device then the "-v /Container/Portainer:/data" @ 21:38 will need to be changed.
    Qnap will use "-v /share/Container/Portainer:/data".
    Synology will be "-v /volume1/Container/Portainer:/data" depending on how you named your volumes.
    Terramaster will use "-v /mnt/md0/Container/Portainer:/data" md0 represents volume 1, md1 represents volume 2, and so on.

    Thank you for this. I intend to use my Mac Mini as my docker host and a Synology for my storage so I'll have to try and Frankenstein these systems together, but your tutorials are easy enough to follow so far. Excited for the rest of this series to play out

    A really fantastic demonstration of how tutorials should be done. MrBuckwheet is a pure gentleman and gives outrageous support if you are stuck. You need to be patient when going through the steps and if you make a mistake this man is there and will reply to your questions. Full marks to this man I could not rate him enough. Keep up the brilliant work.

    Awesome! Migrating my setup from Synology to Ubuntu. I've been overwhelmed trying to figure out Ubuntu Desktop, as DSM was so easy to use. I'm getting ready to start working on installing the dockers for the arrs , pmm, tautulli, etc. This was very helpful!

      I’m earlier in my explorations than you, why move from windows to unbuntu? I was thinking of just installing plex and the rrs all on a windows box?

      See and I’ve just turned my Windows machine into a proxmox server and am getting started with docker and containers. I have been overwhelmed on where to start to get my plex back up and running. I have many friends and family who grew to love what I had built manually on there over the years but I’ve grown tired of windows crap and have been excited to do some automation and switching over to a whole new way of doing things. The potential of a proxmox build has had me giddy for a while. Now I’m in the learning phase and trying to soak up as much as I can from tutorials all over the place.

    Quick question....
    On portainer, should the 'External' network under 'Network list' have the same IP address as the server. In your video, your localhost is 192.168.0.34, yet the 'external' ip address shown around 26:30 in the above video is 172.18.0.0

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  3 месяца назад

      Nope. Portainer is creating a subnet for docker that will have its own local IP range. This is still an internal network that can only be seen/accessed by the localhost. Its basically a virtual switch with a NAT layer that if allowed we can still expose apps/containers to the internet. I use the "External" name since anything in this network has the ability to access an external network (provided we allow it to)

    Thanks for all the help so far! I am trying to decide if it is worth it to store my config folder on my Synology instead of on my local Ubuntu VM. I am backing up that VM in Proxmox, but I guess if I were to store it on my Synology and take snapshots I would be double covered if something were to go wrong?

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  2 месяца назад +1

      You're welcome. I would set the config folder to be used locally on the VM and use a secondary device as a backup. The Synology would be perfect. I use a portable WD passport that runs a backup once a month.

      @@mrbuckwheet thanks! I ended up setting up the config folder on the Ubuntu VM and will just keep backing up that VM to my Synology. I was more trying to think ahead for when it comes time to replace my micro desktop that I'm using as my server. What gave me the idea to store the container configs on the NAS was this video: ruclips.net/video/eKAQiYu4NyI/видео.htmlsi=9XtQ3_4sYJmksaRR

    I just set up my QNAP TS 464 as a "rookie" but am thirsty to understand this. I am ALREADY looking at upgrading and am thinking the TVS-h874T. My question to this in the meanwhile - is it easy enough to install docker and portainer on my system (I already have about 5tb of data). I would prefer not to go back to factory defaults and lose my last 2 weeks of intensive downloading. Thanks man, you rock!

    Thanks for this video- very useful. I currently have the arrs containers running in container station but don't have Portainer. Is it worth installing Portainer and then recreating the images? Everything works well now so I'm scared to mess it up!

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  6 месяцев назад +1

      If everything is working correctly for you then honestly there is no need to reinstall it unless you want to. You can still install portainer and use it to monitor your current container and use it for new ones you deploy. Remember portainer is still a container that runs in docker so you would not have to reinstall any containers you have already set up. It helps with your docker environment regardless if it's new or has been running for years

      Nope, QNAP's container station is a version of docker

    I setup the bridge in portainer however I can only access portainer and it's containers if I use the qnap's browser station not my computers actual browser how are you getting it on your actual browser? When i try it times out.

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  Месяц назад

      Do you have a static IP set for your qnap device? That IP followed by the port number is how you access everything. It should be a 192.168.1.X address or similar

    • @ramonfontanez8313
      @ramonfontanez8313 Месяц назад

      @mrbuckwheet I am going to say no then cause every time I set something up on it it comes up with a 10.x.x.x address. How do I do that?

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  Месяц назад

      @ramonfontanez8313 You will need to login to your router and configure the settings there. You want a static IP for the NAS so it will always keep the same local IP address on your home network.

    • @ramonfontanez8313
      @ramonfontanez8313 Месяц назад

      @mrbuckwheet okay I will look at that tonight when I get home. Once I have that changed and rebooted the qnap I should be able to access everything through my browser then or will I have to remake the bridge on portainer?

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  Месяц назад +1

      Yes you will use that static ip and the port number to access all your containers

    Man, why is it so hard to make a simple tutorial video purely for QNAP? I appreciate you trying to help but it's still very confusing because you're bouncing around between QNAP and Ubuntu and Terminal and Putty and I after following all the instructions I still can't get this stupid thing working.
    If I'm using a QNAP with Container Station, I can basically ignore anything between 8:52 and 19:08 right?
    Is the Container folder that is setup/seen in File Station at 2:15 the same thing you're talking about at 20:35? If so, why can't I see those other folders in File Station?
    What should the path be for QNAP in that Portainer command line? I tried using what you used (/Container/Portainer) and I can see Portainer in Container Station now, but I can't get the local environment to show up in Portainer so I've clearly skipped an important step or messed up somewhere.

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  3 месяца назад

      For a qnap you will need to add /share in front of /Container/Portainer:/data portainer/portainer-ee:latest. Every manufacturer is different with how their paths are configured. Synology uses the /Volume1 prefix, qnap uses the /share prefix for any share folder created

    Can you run this inside of TrueNAS Scale or does it need to be its own linux/ubuntu server?

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  5 месяцев назад

      You would have to run it in a VM with linux/ubuntu on trueNAS since docker was removed from the base OS. Side note: Running the portainer app will also not work as it will only connect to the Kubernetes instance already running on TrueNAS

  • @JohnWishon_Riptide9
    @JohnWishon_Riptide9 8 месяцев назад

    Not sure I understand why you run container station to then run ubuntu to then run portainer. Why don't you just run Portainer in container station on the Qnap NAS container station (it's just docker)? I run portainer on the Qnap and have 33 containers running with all my stacks out of Portianer (plex, sonarr, radarr, sabnzbd, pihole, etc)

    • @mrbuckwheet
      @mrbuckwheet  8 месяцев назад

      That is what I do. I explained in the video I created the VM as a test environment to show how to install everything from a clean or new state. I used Ubuntu since it's the easiest to install on a VM
