www.gamersgate.... TotalBiscuit takes a look at the 3rd in the medieval action RPG/combat simulator series, Mount and Blade by Talesworlds Entertainment.
The reason this game is awesome is because of the fact it takes place in 17th century Europe, which isn't very common in video games besides a scattered few pirate games and such I really hope Game companies would realize the potential for periods such as the thirty years wars, English Civil War, the wars of religion. or the Deluge
Why the hell are people arguing and comparing the Mount&Blade serie to the Elder Scrolls serie? They are nothing alike exept for the fact that they are both RPG's and the personal combat system is pretty similar. Might as well compare Portal to the Tomb Raider games because they are both puzzle games.
The combat is accessible but hard to master, unlike games such as Kingdom Come Deliverance. I think it’s basically a thrice as expensive game. Some of us can’t just pull out $100 out of our pocket just for a single game (I’m looking at you Call of Duty)
Mount and blade warband is one of the greatest games ever made. It is just so deep and so addictive and offers some much value. Its amazing that its made by an indie company
Love this series - and Fire and Sword is much more interesting than the "fantasy" version from Warband. And renaissance Eastern Europe is a very interesting setting. I'm hoping this might be my new "historical" strategy game after Total War let me down with Rome II.
Dying super quickly like around 21:00 did happen in Warband and the original, but only when you were up against Khergit horsemen with spears. A good stab with a spear at full charging speed was a guaranteed kill. Then again, spears are only good when charging in the first place, so they're balanced in their own way.
tb: see i don't like this idea of guns doing this much damage and taking you out of the fight almost immediatley. me: then maybe you shouldn't CHARGE at then with only a pistol in open ground
Come on - Total Buiscuit - don't be a wuss, just because you can't single handedly charge and kill an entire army armed with muskets... Gunpowder makes this game much more interesting. Using grenades against massed opponents in a siege, for instance :)
I think that I mostly love this game because few if any other games manage to pull off an era in warfare where melee weapons, bows and firearms were all common. Interesting, considering there were hundreds of years that this was the case.
Hamsterzilla1349 buzz, wrong answer, there's star wars conquest (which is basically a whole game in itself) and chaos war, which is basically a good total conversion mod as well as war sword, a warhammer mod, which is a lot better than conquest, because it works, dude do your research

Honestly, both games have their pros and cons, yet in my opinion none of them can be called actual simulators. Both are arcady, just M&B has a bit more deeper combat system, yet it misses all the rest for example decapitating. (There might be some mods for it, but I haven't seen, really.)
Let me break it down for you guys... M&B is like GTA it's the original package that had time to develop more than Chivalry , more detailed with a wider experience and Chivalry is like Saints Row , it's more to the point , little bit less detailed and worked on..
I have all the 3 games and my personal favorite is warband its a upgraded version of the original game the thing i hated about fire and sword was that you could mostly only use mercenary it lost the big unit upgrade system from warband an the original did have
As cavalry you are far to exposed to manage a head on charge, to manage that you need at least 15 cavalry to help disperse enemy fire. You need to use your mobility to your advantage and preferably stay 20 feet away from musketeers and DO NOT stop moving, you zipping around is what keeps them from plugging you with a full volley. Start closing in once the footmen have engaged them and during the initial charge grenades are the best. TL:DR-KEEP DISTANCE ON HORSEY.
This game is genuinely great. It's a lot different from Warband, which people didn't expect, but it's still a great game. It's a long-term game, has a lot of replay value, and is really fantastic if you use the order commands. Holding F1 (not just pressing it) will show a flag, for example, and all the units under the current command will hold the position of wherever you set the flag. By default, pressing 2 selects your marksmen, so using that you can position marksmen where they can get shots.

I have loved the Mount&Blade series since i first laid eyes on a seige battle on youtube. I have played the series for 200+ hours and seeing this video reminded me all about the roots of how i learned to love this game. Thank you TB.
I think the guns are balanced vs. bows because bows can fire really fast, but do little damage, whereas guns take a while to reload, but do serious damage.
TB’s Mount and Blade livestreams were responsible for introducing me to the M&B series. Still an avid fan of Warband; easily one of my favorite games of all time. Would’ve loved to have seen a WTF is Bannerlord.. Hope you’re in a better place now man, we miss ya
Very true, also it's the fact that Warband gives a HUGE breather from all the shooters, i know quite a few people (Including me) that desperately wanted to have a mid evil game and this was a great game to show that theme.
If I can add to this first impression, compared to most games, in Mount&Blade, you hardly consider balancing.. it's more about realism; guns will blow your spleen out in one go so it's not pleasant to get hit by one :P So it's important to get this idea before growing frustrated by the game. It's a very unique but, at least to my experience (and to my history-nerd side) compelling and addictive to no end! Also all games from the series are fairly cheap, great modding and have no anoying DRM :)
This is the whole point of TB channel. Good exposure for indie games. This video introduced me to the M&B games. Utterly enjoyed the Warband. One of the best time-sinkers out there,
Personally I like the guns, adds a sense of tension to battles as you see your troops dieing left and right as you charge a fortress, unlike warband in which I simply just charge straight into the enemy and hack away. Battle orders are also VERY important cause you want to set up a line of marksmen while you harass with your cav, kinda like total war in a sense. Positioning on a hill can give you a huge advantage.
I remember playing a demo of the original Mount and Blade a very long time ago. It's what got me into the Elder Scrolls series. Thank you Mount and Blade!
I found that once I had some proper armor I could take just enough hits to keep the frustration down. At that point, riding past a line of musketeers, waiting for them to fire, and slicing through them was pretty exciting. I think it made the tactical side more necessary, using your musketeers to pin the enemy, giving you and your cavalry freedom to do the damage. That said, I think I found Warband more fun, but I'd still recommend WF&S.
I bought it around the same time you posted that comment... And I've only just come off it after an all nighter... and come straight onto a video of the game... short answer: YES. lol
@Sztanyi It depends on whether youre into the medieval rpgs or the shooter rpgs. i would personally go with warband because of the more pbalanced combat system and the ability to singlehandedly win battles and be a hero. but then again im partial to medieval rpgs.
In Fire and Sword you can go to villages still but you have to join a nation first and the people you get from them differ on what nation you get unlike other Mount and Blade games. Also they are the lowest of the low very weak but useful if you need men quickly. On how you get best men you got to forts and cities to recruit them however they require a few days to train and you can pick them up whenever you please. You can recruit from as many places as your nation has.
fire and sword takes place in the 17th century when firearms were common and gunpowder more refined. In the 15 century, when I hope bannerlord is set, guns were rarer, less accurate and less powerful and so had less of an impact in warfare, smiths used to use guns to test there armor, if the armor was of grater quality the round would not penetrate the armor. What I really meant though by overpowered was the weapons accuracy. Even in the 17th century guns were hugely inaccurate.
It does 65 damage for a reason, because you cant increase that number. There is power draw, when maxed out the bow outdamages crossies easily, not to mention the bow's increased speed and mount compatibility. Crossbows are the most effective in castle siege and defense, headshots, early game power and plate armor piercing.
I actually did a proper test of the auto-resolve. I had an army of 50 max level units (even mix of infantry, cavalry and archers), saved before fighting a 150 strong lord army and then tried it by both idling (just sitting in the map and letting my units do the work) and auto-resolving. In the idle run I wiped out all but 10 of his units with no casualties, in the auto-resolve I lost every one of my units and barely killed a third of his.
Actually guns exist in the original as well, there's just no way to get them or at least the skill in firearms exists. My favorite mod for the original, Sword of Damocles, had a few units with guns and that blended really well, but I guess that most units having guns would definitely change the gameplay.
The trick with enemy gunners is to make sure you keep the distance while they aim and move a lot and once they got their shot out(and hopefully missed), you need to get up close and personal ASAP before they get the chance to reload.
I also forgot to mention... You can adjust your tactics and your troops' formations with F1, F2, F3 and F4 .. helps when the opposing faction can shoot you.. you can send infantry in first, then let the cavalry flank them :)
I had a small band of nothing but Swadian Knights (about 30) at one point which I took against a numerically superior force of Saranids. Realistically there was nothing short of the ocean or Mamlukes that would stop my band. Naturally the one Mamluke the enemy force had hit me with couched lance damage in the opening seconds of the engagement and apparently my men instantly forgot how to charge and instantly got their asses handed to them.
Brilliant vid. And the game isn't too hard once you get used to it. You can easily play on the normal difficulty settings once you level a bit and get used to the battle system. I recommend getting the game, it's amazing.
It's own game, for example it's based on a book series, takes place in real world and has several improvements over previous games, mainly Warband. However, it started as an expansion and grew from there so it't technically "stand-alone expansion".
They're almost the same, I prefer Warband for its early Medieval era atmosphere, but Fire and Sword is the late-Medieval era in Eastern Europe, which is nice too. I play both though. So you should get both.
He is both. Britain is the island, which includes the countries of England, Scotland and Wales, all of which is owned by England. TB has said before he is from newcastle, which is in northern England, so he is both. the UK can also include Northern island, but I think it is not included as Britain as it is on ireland rather than on the same island the other 3 countries are on.
Warband and WFAS is pretty equal without mods, Warband has it's own annoying things while it's own good things, same for WFAS. Warband with Floris mod pack is awesome and with Mount & Empire you can get guns too. Floris essentially is "Warband, but with all the annoying stuff removed and awesome stuff added" while Mount & Empire is "Warband in colonial times"
Rhodok Sharpshooters for ranged, Nord Huscarls for melee (both of those make fantastic castle defenders), and Swadian Knights/Sarranid Marmalukes for cavalry work wonders, for sure.
Warband. If you like guns, get the napoleonic wars multiplayer dlc for it. And yes you can be a drummer boy, or a hornist, or a standard bearer, or artillerist. Or an officer with a working spyglass.
There actually is a reason to get the original Mount and Blade. Mods. There's a really, really good Star Wars mod for the original Mount and Blade. There's also a pretty good Warhammer Fantasy mod for it.
The average musketball is larger than a .50 caliber rifle round. Getting shot, especially with the medicine available at the time pretty much guarantees your death. If the blood loss doesn't kill you the shattered bones very well might. The guns are OP because they were OP in the actual historical setting too. Also pretty much every army at the period was actively arming themselves with muskets, so it would not make sense to have them all use bows.
Deserters at the beginning are real problem. I made a viking sort of war-hero in Warband, and in the beginning i got my ass handed to myself because of deserters. When I had like 38 troops, all pretty highly trained, one huscarl, some veterans, and so on, I killed the lot of them, just because they gave me such a hard time.
you should level up high at least one money making skill in warband & m&b 1) Looting (+ inventory management if you want to loot everything as needed) 2) Prisoner management 3) trade + inv management (requires you to play in trading style) 4) capture a city, and protect it, help it ecconomically and you will be rewarded with taxes. With out one or more of these you will struggle in m&b.
Yeah, from my experience in Warband you did NOT mess with deserters or it was game over for you, buddy... They are always super well equipped from their time in the army, so unless you have better stuff than them or simply more brute force, it's lights out for you and your men!
There is still good reason to buy the original Mount&Blade. There are a few exceptionally good mods for it such as Star Wars Conquest and The Last Days of The Third Age.
I think they're good in their own way, Warband is good because I like big meelee battles. WFAS is good because it's upgraded and has guns. (Also It's my favourite part of history. I love fighting with the Swedish Caroleas.)
When I said New I meant as in new concept. Like the game is perfect. Its fucking awesome. But I think it could be 10x better. Your companions have stories of their own, and they sometimes and sometimes dont get along with other companions, and on your decisions they may or may not like you more, where they leave your side. They could add Romance in it, and alot more to it. Graphics boost, and chosen storyline as in when you select Personal Revenge, you actually have to get vengeance.
Watching this 10 years later the game has Improved a lot with updates and such and I even found it to better than Warband in many ways a Improved warband so to speak also this may just be me but I really love the setting its amazing they should have more games in this time period EDIT: Also this game lead to Mount and blade Naploen. War which has a really tight amazing community thats friendly to new players and has so many amazing Regiments and Servers
Guns arent overpowered if you ask me, they are correctly powered. They were trying to show fairly accurate combat for the time period. Guns take a long time to load, but if they hit you they hit HARD. But there are tactics you can learn that will help a lot to keep safer, for instance, riding the horse fast makes you hard to hit, or charging the enemies while they are loading, etc etc. And its nice to have a gun of your own that hits superhard....
In war band, I found a cheat that lets you buy a flintlock pistol and modified the pistol to shoot 6 shots before reloading. I hired something like 15 npc's and gave them each this weapon. They were the only members of my party. I would take them, dismounted, to the top of a hill in a tight formation and tell them to hold fire until the other guys were well in range. All I gotta say is the gun is king, no sword or bow could reproduce those results. I won against hundreds with under 20 men.
I just want to thank TH and steam. Its become a bit of a habit, I check steam for the latest "OMG WTF were they thinking" sale and then go to this channel to see the game. Thank you so much for helping all the gamers like me who like support great content but have to be very selective because we can't afford to blow 100s of dollars every month on crap games.
Well ending and ending. I have read that if you follow a certain storyline (I belive its given by the faction leader) you will be assassinated, never gotten so far, and I always become my own faction. And you can take every city and castle/fort/fortress and control everything. But there arent, as you say, a specific endig that ends in either one way or different ways.
I believe that is up to yourself. There's a lot of options, like enabling blood, limiting corpses and ragdolls that you can heavily alter requirements. The game doesn't sport the most beautiful graphics, but with 150 NPC (more with mods) battles and all the other bells and whistles it can become a bit demanding.
Guns take about 5 seconds to reload, You can get about 2 arrows off by the time they can shoot again. Good game but when your in multiplayer be aware that people move back while there reloading when your going at them so they can get another shot off at you.
Also if your very lucky the damage may decrease from the bullet heres an example. I was riding on a troop horse and my max body armor was 12, 8 from my Cossack Zupan and 4 from my gloves, I got 33 damage from a shot.
Warband definately, its much more balanced and the modding scene is HUGE. i have some experience with 900+hrs in warband and 25+hrs in with fire and sword.
The damage was insanely high in the odler ones aswells, ive seen headshots do over 300 damage and spears do ALOT of damage when charging. Also can reach in the easy 150, 180 damage
I originally played MB: With Fire and Sword to around day 1500. If you're looking to take over the whole map for yourself in the goal of world domination it is impossible you can not have vessels, nor is there any functionality in controlling your kingdom. You still can take castles and cities but all they have to service you is tax income and a garrison your empire will have only you to take care of EVERY fight. If this sounds bad to you buy War band like I have :P But are still great games!
If a lord from a faction sees bandits he might chase them down. If you give the lord help you gain a bit of approval from him, even if there are only like five enemies versus the lord's party of 67.
If you wear the best armour in the game you can take 2-3 hits from the best musket and bullets to the chest and believe it or not, 2 hits to the face from a decent musket also.
Because of this video (and others like it) I got Mount and Blade: Warband, for apparently it is the best in the series. One week later, with 55 hours game time I have only one regret, my other games have been tragically neglected
The reason this game is awesome is because of the fact it takes place in 17th century Europe, which isn't very common in video games besides a scattered few pirate games and such
I really hope Game companies would realize the potential for periods such as the thirty years wars, English Civil War, the wars of religion. or the Deluge
Exactly. Nothing is more satisfying than blowing an enemy away with a wheel lock rifle
The combat really isn't similar at all
The combat is accessible but hard to master, unlike games such as Kingdom Come Deliverance. I think it’s basically a thrice as expensive game. Some of us can’t just pull out $100 out of our pocket just for a single game (I’m looking at you Call of Duty)

> EVERYTHING IS TOO POWERFUL WTF
Mount and blade warband is one of the greatest games ever made. It is just so deep and so addictive and offers some much value. Its amazing that its made by an indie company
Fuck off it’s not greatest game ever made there are better game’s than crappy warband
this chuth fcukin game, you cant buy or sell anything for profit, so trading is a bad joke, combat is another bad joke.
@@arvindnewman1213 I made 30000+ trading
XxX_Cringe_Boi34_XxX 420 me too
Love this series - and Fire and Sword is much more interesting than the "fantasy" version from Warband. And renaissance Eastern Europe is a very interesting setting.
I'm hoping this might be my new "historical" strategy game after Total War let me down with Rome II.
Warband wasn't really fantasy though.
My Polish friend said to me about some film With Fire and Sword from his country and when i saw history of that game i see it is based on that film.
I can recommend M&B:Warband over this. At least that is my preference. Guns are too overpowered.
Dying super quickly like around 21:00 did happen in Warband and the original, but only when you were up against Khergit horsemen with spears. A good stab with a spear at full charging speed was a guaranteed kill. Then again, spears are only good when charging in the first place, so they're balanced in their own way.
the auto resolve thinks that 200 sarranid recruits could easily win against 100 khergit lancers (they can't)
Θαλῆς ὁ Μιλήσιος warband had a better resolve, if not the same
I remember the best strategy was to garrison your castles with 1000 recruits. Bam. Impregnable fortresses.
Eduardo Godinez and it only costs you 10,000 monies
therealgotanks 10 denars*1000 troops=10000 denars
They cant desert either way, so.
tb: see i don't like this idea of guns doing this much damage and taking you out of the fight almost immediatley.
me: then maybe you shouldn't CHARGE at then with only a pistol in open ground
Haha right? How does he think officers ever survived irl?
Come on - Total Buiscuit - don't be a wuss, just because you can't single handedly charge and kill an entire army armed with muskets...

"just because you can't single handedly charge and kill an entire army armed with muskets"

Used to be a total war fan, then I plaed Mount and Blade(at all of them) added some mods and never went back, this game is just amazing
I think that I mostly love this game because few if any other games manage to pull off an era in warfare where melee weapons, bows and firearms were all common. Interesting, considering there were hundreds of years that this was the case.
reason to get first game: mods
There's no good mod for the very first game that wasn't ported to Warband.
Hamsterzilla1349 buzz, wrong answer, there's star wars conquest (which is basically a whole game in itself) and chaos war, which is basically a good total conversion mod as well as war sword, a warhammer mod, which is a lot better than conquest, because it works, dude do your research
RandomX YEAH BUT ITS A GLITCHY UNWORKING MESS IN COMPARISON HA!
RandomX why are you being so salty about this? they are both good games :P, is it just that time of the month?
aperturesciencegames Or maybe it's because of your reply, but anyway.

This game is genuinely great. It's a lot different from Warband, which people didn't expect, but it's still a great game. You can be a count or king in Mount and Blade : With Fire and Sword
its 3rd or 1st person btw
I play first person.
i like how you have to be tactical in this game it makes it more like a actual war simulation game i like it.
Mount and blade 2:
new features the devs are considering are
Multiplayer
- Faster combat
- A co-op campaign
- Ability to make classes
- A levelling system
- No auto-attack direction
Singleplayer
- Smarter AI
- Battering ram + more
not a lot of details about SP yet
and finally
Weapons
- No guns
- More accurate bows
- See arrows fly in air
- Smash shields faster
these aren't confirmed only rumours but they are being considered by devs due to feedback so be sure to speak your mind
It's not only expanding the game by a new weaponry.
It also uses a Polish literature called "with Fire and Sword" as a background story. It's a book based on the Polish history, so plese don't be so ignorant about it.
Is he using any mods? The menus look a little different, as well as the icons, and the sound (gunfire, mostly) sounds different as well... 0_o
I think he said it was an early demo/promo build, so it's probably been patched since then.

And I've only just come off it after an all nighter... and come straight onto a video of the game... short answer: YES. lol
@Sztanyi It depends on whether youre into the medieval rpgs or the shooter rpgs. i would personally go with warband because of the more pbalanced combat system and the ability to singlehandedly win battles and be a hero. but then again im partial to medieval rpgs.
dang tb, you sure came a long way. kudos man.
Mount & Blade Collection currently available for 75% off on Steam! Hell yeah!
@NumidiumsRG no its just an RPG because you cn go to 1st person nd 3rd person
The trick with enemy gunners is to make sure you keep the distance while they aim and move a lot and once they got their shot out(and hopefully missed), you need to get up close and personal ASAP before they get the chance to reload.
I also forgot to mention... You can adjust your tactics and your troops' formations with F1, F2, F3 and F4 .. helps when the opposing faction can shoot you.. you can send infantry in first, then let the cavalry flank them :)
Don't forget to check out mods for warband like "Anno Domini 1257" or "A Clash of Kings". They take that game even higher.
When I had like 38 troops, all pretty highly trained, one huscarl, some veterans, and so on, I killed the lot of them, just because they gave me such a hard time.
you should level up high at least one money making skill in warband & m&b
1) Looting (+ inventory management if you want to loot everything as needed)
2) Prisoner management
3) trade + inv management (requires you to play in trading style)
4) capture a city, and protect it, help it ecconomically and you will be rewarded with taxes.
With out one or more of these you will struggle in m&b.
I think it depends in what age Bannerlord will be, probably not. However the multiplayer DLC Napoleonic Wars has guns and its pretty fun.
Yeah, from my experience in Warband you did NOT mess with deserters or it was game over for you, buddy... They are always super well equipped from their time in the army, so unless you have better stuff than them or simply more brute force, it's lights out for you and your men!
2:51 "This is the horse I'm riding which is rubbish."
Horse: Jokes on you, you have bad hair...
There is still good reason to buy the original Mount&Blade. There are a few exceptionally good mods for it such as Star Wars Conquest and The Last Days of The Third Age.
I prefer this to the original m&b because when you get a good line of muskets they will rip apart your enemies and it's a lot more tactical
Watching this 10 years later the game has Improved a lot with updates and such and I even found it to better than Warband in many ways a Improved warband so to speak also this may just be me but I really love the setting its amazing they should have more games in this time period
EDIT: Also this game lead to Mount and blade Naploen. War which has a really tight amazing community thats friendly to new players and has so many amazing Regiments and Servers
10 years later I never knew it was 2021.
This game didnt lead to napoleonic wars, that was the mount and musket mod...
The game doesn't sport the most beautiful graphics, but with 150 NPC (more with mods) battles and all the other bells and whistles it can become a bit demanding.
i love the time period of F & S and the fact that it works in Grenades,Guns,Swords. but its no doubt.... the hardest game ive ever played.. -_-
Guns take about 5 seconds to reload, You can get about 2 arrows off by the time they can shoot again.
The bar fight was the single most epic battle I have ever witnessed.
I like Napoleonic Era better then any of the medieval ones. Many more features, only problem is that it is only multiplayer.
@NumidiumsRG
You can play first person or third.
