Co prawda, jako jedyni mogli uprawiać lichwę (pożyczać na procent), prowadzili też interesy szlachty i magnatów (zajmowali się handlem, np. sprzedawali ich zboże). The Italian version was equally savage and in the German dubbing (to my surprise) they did use "Juden", so - as usual - many Polish commentators on RUclips exaggerate and what's worse, they do so in a wrong place to begin with. This channel is about a foreigner learning about 'all things Poland', the focus should be on appreciating that and motivating him to continue on that path, not on arguing about such unimportant details which won't be understandable to him (and most of Germans) anyway.

Some of the translations in these clips were just terrible. I would still recommend this series, it's not too long and has a lot of little Polish jokes about the past (and present) and overall it's good. (The man with the white face was the son of a magnate, at that time wigs and such makeup were fashionable among the high nobility. This fashion came from France if i am not mistaken)
Yup, it started in France and it was popular all over Europe so if Chris knew European history a bit better or at least watched some older German historical dramas, he wouldn't have been surprised by it. However, given the choice of the actor and the way the magnate's son is portrayed, well, maybe I'm biased because I'm definitely more used to American or British shows rather than the Polish ones, but I expected a plot twist regarding the arranged marriage thing with the magnate's son turning out to be gay or at least bisexual. 😅 Even the trailer itself already gave me that vibe about him. 🤣
Oh... I heard this show is watched in Germany :) Yeah... it's Polish and this is actually the mirror to current Poland (and proof that nothing has changed for ages). There is always a dude that wants to rule, a dude that is church connected, someone that is more progressive, and some patriots... that usually sit in stadiums ;) Germany is not that much different from Poland in history, favorite things, people's characters... and very distant history. You also had nobility that was probably ruling some lands.
This series were fun, although some jokes might not be as good after translation. It's basicaly a joke series laughing from: - Polish nobility and their belief, that they are superior to other people - Clergy and their greed - Antisemitism ( main joke being here, that Jews are acused of 'always conspiring ' and trying to rule the world in secrecy) - tv shows popular in Poland in 90's, early 2000's Etc. Although, some jokes might not be easy to translate, others should work fine everywhere, without knowing any context. Series themselves present a Monthy Python kind of humor.
This series are really funny, especially the second part of the first season (it's 8 episodes). I wonder how well it translates to other languages cause I've watched it in original Polish and some of the jokes seemed like they would be very hard to translate because of words play in Polish.

It’s a word game, the decorative part of clothing that polish nobles and rich used to wear called „kutas” which after years changed its meaning to vulgar synonym for penis. That was the joke that the nobles have big „kutas” there was also cold open in the show, nobles on their assembly measured who had biggest one.

it's mostly a comedy about the Polish mentality, and yes, it's true, that's why Poles laugh at it so much, because it's about us 😅 unfortunately.... although we are aware of it to some extent 🐵
To be fair though, I've met quite a few Poles who didn't enjoy the show at all but I think that's because some of them were so stubbornly patriotic/nationalistic and religious that they were offended by it and others may have not understood that many of the jokes were actually about present-day Polish mentality rather than the Polish-Lithuanian noblemen of the time.

Ngl, I was worried how the show would be received by non-Poles but my (not then yet) boyfriend liked it quite a lot. Probably helped him that we watched it together, so I could point out some translation mistakes in the subs, as well as cultural references in the jokes.
the series has many references to our history and culture, so it is difficult to understand and translate into other languages entire dialogues and jokes that only Poles and maybe Belarusians and Ukrainians who were under our rule until recently understand

But I'm not sure how good German translation will be, I know only a bunch of random things in German. ;-; It's a satire, that shows the ugly side of XVIIth century in Poland and how "noble" man used their peasants, but in this case I love the main character. Unfortunately, translating into foreign languages doesn't convey many great jokes. Referring to the classic "Lost in Translation." I am a practicing Catholic, but even I find jokes about the Church funny. This series very intelligently and sarcastically mocks the flaws of the Church, Polish mentality, and the feudal system (which was essentially Poland's form of slavery). It's a bit of dark and self-ironic humor, but we like to laugh at ourselves. Trailers show these jokes out of context, which makes them lose even more value. Regarding architecture, the seventeenth century was a period of intense development for Poland, including in the fields of architecture and urban planning, so a roof like the one you pointed out is definitely from that era. In fact, it's just a small detail compared to other buildings that were erected in Poland at that time.

This series were fun, although some jokes might not be as good after translation.
It's basicaly a joke series laughing from:
- Polish nobility and their belief, that they are superior to other people
- Clergy and their greed
- Antisemitism ( main joke being here, that Jews are acused of 'always conspiring ' and trying to rule the world in secrecy)
- tv shows popular in Poland in 90's, early 2000's
Etc.
Although, some jokes might not be easy to translate, others should work fine everywhere, without knowing any context.
Series themselves present a Monthy Python kind of humor.

This series are really funny, especially the second part of the first season (it's 8 episodes). I wonder how well it translates to other languages cause I've watched it in original Polish and some of the jokes seemed like they would be very hard to translate because of words play in Polish.

Other great things about Poland. Did you know that Philip Patek most expensive watches were made by two Polish watchmakers check the history. One was Patek and the other was Czapek. I was so shocked myself that the most expensive watch in the world was started by two Polaks.

Don't use "Polaks" in English, because it's considered offensive (as in "a dumb Polack"). The proper term for a Polish person in Englihs is a "Pole".

It’s a word game, the decorative part of clothing that polish nobles and rich used to wear called „kutas” which after years changed its meaning to vulgar synonym for penis. That was the joke that the nobles have big „kutas” there was also cold open in the show, nobles on their assembly measured who had biggest one.
@@magdalenasikora3327 I saw the trailer in Polish as well, and he uses the word "fallusy" if they wanted to make the "kutas" joke (which I assume they do at some point in one of the episodes), they likely would have used that exact word.
it's mostly a comedy about the Polish mentality, and yes, it's true, that's why Poles laugh at it so much, because it's about us 😅 unfortunately.... although we are aware of it to some extent 🐵
I am aware... I think myself i am a patriot (came back from abroad work), and progressive daughter in one...
To be fair though, I've met quite a few Poles who didn't enjoy the show at all but I think that's because some of them were so stubbornly patriotic/nationalistic and religious that they were offended by it and others may have not understood that many of the jokes were actually about present-day Polish mentality rather than the Polish-Lithuanian noblemen of the time.

Tylko żeby było bardziej śmieszne, fallusy były również nazywane ,,kutasami" , a kutas to też wulgarnie ,,penis" lub ,,mężczyzna który jest dupkiem".❤ O tych problemach właśnie pisałam wcześniej 😂
Również ta ozdoba przy pasie od żupanu, nazywa się u nas ,,frędzel" ale tak też można wulgarnie nazwać ,,mężczyzne, który bardzo często zdradza żonę" te ,,frędzle" również w staropolskim były nazywane ,,chwostkami" i ,,chwostkiem" również można nazwać ,, mężczyznę, który jest dupkiem albo po prostu jest bardzo zły". W ,,Starej Baśni" naród między sobą mówił na króla Popiela ,,Chwostek".

Ngl, I was worried how the show would be received by non-Poles but my (not then yet) boyfriend liked it quite a lot. Probably helped him that we watched it together, so I could point out some translation mistakes in the subs, as well as cultural references in the jokes.
the series has many references to our history and culture, so it is difficult to understand and translate into other languages entire dialogues and jokes that only Poles and maybe Belarusians and Ukrainians who were under our rule until recently understand

But yes, it was pierogi, yes the the dude in a wig with makeup is a dude (a magnate's son) and yes, the series was filmed in Poland (although not in the village of Adamczycha - which is a real place; I think I read that it was filmed somewhere in Bieszczady, I think).
Seriously though, I recommend watching it in Polish with subs. Though I must admit, German subs sound surprisingly good

Yeah! Watch it! But I'm not sure how good German translation will be, I know only a bunch of random things in German. ;-; It's a satire, that shows the ugly side of XVIIth century in Poland and how "noble" man used their peasants, but in this case I love the main character. He is kinda like Michael from the office. Too optimistic and absorbed in the world he lives in to see the problems.

Unfortunately, translating into foreign languages doesn't convey many great jokes. Referring to the classic "Lost in Translation." I am a practicing Catholic, but even I find jokes about the Church funny. This series very intelligently and sarcastically mocks the flaws of the Church, Polish mentality, and the feudal system (which was essentially Poland's form of slavery). It's a bit of dark and self-ironic humor, but we like to laugh at ourselves. Trailers show these jokes out of context, which makes them lose even more value.
Regarding architecture, the seventeenth century was a period of intense development for Poland, including in the fields of architecture and urban planning, so a roof like the one you pointed out is definitely from that era. In fact, it's just a small detail compared to other buildings that were erected in Poland at that time.

Co Ty pieprzysz człowieku. Rewelacyjny serial, może by tak wreszcie wyjąć kija z pupy i pośmiać się z naszych narodowych przywar, kompleksów etc. Trochę dystansu do świata, a przede wszystkim do siebie.
