    I hiked the JMT in 1983. I’m now 73 with Parkinson’s and the memories of your trip brought tears to my eyes. If there were anything in this world that I would like to do, it would have to be the JMT once again. I have also hiked Alaska, Canada and Japan but there is nothing like the JMT. The PCT is for the ego, but the best most beautiful part you have done.
    Bill

      Hello Billnjune, Thank you so much for that Great comment, sorry to hear about your Parkinson's and i'm glad that my video brought back some wonderful memories,
      The JMT is truly a remarkable trail and am glad I get the chance to do it again on my SOBO PCT hike. you say you would like to do the JMT again but physically can't,
      I'f you have not watched my day to day videos on the JMT, I would highly recommend them to you , I've been told by many people that watching those videos actually feels like there hiking the trail with me because there by far the most detailed videos of The Entire JMT on the Internet
      Here is a Link to My 22 day to day Videos on the JMT
      ruclips.net/video/LFDpuhJT2Ig/видео.html
      Hope you will enjoy watching them and get some sense of hiking the trail again.
      Thanks again for the great comment Bill Hope your doing well.
      Cheers.

      As you know, the snow levels in the Sierra's are record breaking. I might recommend the CDT as it is more beautiful in very adventurous in my opinion, whether you do it S to N or N to S. It is nearly impossible to do in one year but if you break it into two years it will be more enjoyable.

    JMT is amazing. Most of the sierras are amazing. Big granite slabs with streams running over them and majestic mountains. I did a lot of back packing in the sierras back in the 1970s, I can still remember hiking for days without seeing another person.

    Wonderful video of the JMT. Really enjoyed it. Probably the best video of this trail I have seen. Very good photography with slow pans and enjoyed that you put on the screen the names of places. I appreciated that YOU were very down to earth and not acting stupid as some people do in their videos. You had great weather also. You will never forget this hike. Thanks for the long video so we could enjoy all the scenery. Thanks for making this and posting for all to see.

    You've done a great job. I did the JMT about 17 years ago (58 now); done a fair amount of hiking in the continental US and Alaska and nothing has beaten the JMT for sheer beauty.and views. Hopefully I'll do it again in the next 3 or 4 years. This year is shaping up to be a high snow year. Good for the state but I'll pass on the hike. I've hiked a lot on snow and it's sooo much more effort. Thanks you the very nice video, pics and editing.

    That fire is scary stuff, encountered a wall of flames as it came up a mountain and started down a steep canyon wall towards us at Nachez River in Wa, we were exploring the river after setting up camp, we could smell smoke but it did not hit us hard until it started down the wall, while turning around a helicopter dropped down to the river right on the side of the road by us and filled a bucket and took off. Rocks and stick flying around us, Scary, scary. Drove back to our camp, was over 15 miles away but left anyway. Smoke not good for anyone.

    I did a cross-Sierra trip in 2013 on the High Sierra Trail. I agree with you. That downhill from the summit to Whitney Portal is brutal and exhausting. It seemed to take forever. The Portal was like a mirage, getting farther and farther away with each step.

    Good editing that still showed what the trail is about. I particularly appreciated actually seeing what the steps on the Golden Staircase are like, thank you. You are the only videographer who showed the steps and not just the switchbacks. Since that was my greatest concern I am now vastly encouraged that they will not trouble me. I'm 76 female planning a NOBO August/Sept 2018 What a great trip you had. and great filming. I do have a QUESTION. I jjust bought a Go Pro and will get extra batteries. How many would you recommend for filming daily. I will also have a solar charger.

    Wow, what a fantastic journey you had on the JMT! And your videography was excellent, as you captured so much of that incredible scenery. The forest fire scenes near the beginning, and the deer running downgrade were pretty intense.
    Although I never actually hiked any of the JMT, or PCT, I guess I was unknowingly on tiny segments of it, because I used to ski at Mammoth Mountain, and then fly fish all over the place up in that general vicinity, including Reds Meadow, Hot Creek, and all sorts of other places including Bishop (Upper, and Lower Owens River), and Big Pine Creek.
    All the success doing the PCT, and I'll have to look at your channel from time to time to check on your progress.
    Question: What camera were you using for all your [selfie] hiking hiking segments? And were you using a selfie stick, or was their an attachment to one of your trekking poles?

      Ovidiu - In 2013 I did HST and JMT NOBO starting from Crescent Meadow and finishing Happy Isles. I have one word of caution: plan a slow re-entry. Spend some time in the valley. Take day hikes. I did not and had some bad depression upon re-entry. It is not uncommon. Sincere best wishes. billqualls.com/survival/hike2013/index.html

    I watched all your videos when you first posted them, and this full condensed version is great! Looking forward to your adventures on the PCT. I am doing a NOBO JMT hike myself this year in mid August, I cant wait, being out in nature really is good for the soul.
    In addition to your gear video you plan before the PCT, Id be curious to hear what allows you financially to do these longer trips- do you have a really flexible job? or do you work part time in a year and save up then take the time off to do these adventures? I would love to do something like the PCT or Appalachian trails, but I found even getting 3-4 weeks off for the JMT challenging at my current career /stage of my life. Just curious to hear other peoples situations and stories, life is short and its great that you take advantage of your time and resources to make memories and live big. Cheers.

      Hi Thejoeb, we'll be hiking SOBO at about the same time - look for 3 old guys! We should meet somewhere in the middle....

    • @Thejoeb
      @Thejoeb 7 лет назад +2

      You are 3 lucky guys...I applied for sobo for over a month and all I got was 42 permit application denials in my email for my trouble.. decided to get creative and do the nobo route. Hope to cross paths with you guys on the trail!

      Since we're going in opposite directions we are almost certain to cross paths. What is your first name so I can ask as we meet other NOBO hikers?

    Hey I love your videos. I’ve watched many. But I can’t help but wonder how and what you use for battery power/recharge? Solar system? I’m amazed how much footage you seem to shoot. Not sure if you covered that in a video before. If so I would love the link. Thanks in advance 😃

      I just charged my batteries in town and had a power bar yet. At first I started with a solar panel but the power bar worked out so much better for me. Had multiple batteries for each camera.

    I'll be taking a GoPro Session 5 on my August 2017 JMT. I am a complete newbie at taking digital video. Of all the JMT videographers you seemed to document an extreme amount of trail compared to the others. How many SD cards/gigabytes did you fill on your JMT trip? At the moment I have but one 64Gb card. Your response will help me decide the amount of SD memory I need to plan for. Thanks! Chris.

    • @HurlgoatHiker
      @HurlgoatHiker  7 лет назад +3

      Hello MrDrDemento, I had close to 700 GB of SD's for the CT and the JMT but only used around 280 GB for the JMT, but like you said I usually capture a lot more than others and that's including all the time lapses and stills.
      On the PCT this year I have well over 1TB, but I will be capturing all my video in 60 frames a second or in 4K.
      hope that helps,
      Happy Trails!

      serpantseed08, Yes that was pretty heavy but managed really well. I just finished a thru hike of the PCT from Canada to Mexico, and lightend up my load by over 20 pounds and im glad i did for it was over 2600 miles of hiking.
      Thanks for watching

    I'm planning on hiking the JMT this summer. I'm trying to get an idea of what trail conditions might be like by watching a variety of videos. What is the date range of your video?

    Awesome video - and I love your joyful enthusiasm through out the hike! Would you mind sharing what video recorder/camera you used? And what are you planning to use on the PCT?

    • @HurlgoatHiker
      @HurlgoatHiker  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks Maryann, I appreciate the kind words!
      I used a Sony AS-15 Action Camera and my Sony DSC-HX300 with 50x optical zoom, I used them a lot and bought 2 new Camera for the PCT,
      I bought a Sony FDR X3000 Action Camera and a Sony A6000 Mirrorless Camera, I really like both and they will bring my video quality up a fair bit.
      Thanks for Following and Happy Trails.

      The A6000 is a great little camera. I took it up Whitney because I didn't want to drag my beast - Canon 5D Mark III.

    Great vid. My brother and I did the JMT a few years ago, it was amazing. What kind of bait, lures, or flies did u use?

    • @HurlgoatHiker
      @HurlgoatHiker  7 лет назад

      Thanks barnum99
      I Used a few different flies and a bobber because I had a casting rod, I had a bit of water in the clear bobber and had around 2.5 feet of line behind it, with a fly at the end of the line.
      The one I had the most luck on was a black slender fly that sunk under the surface a bit.

    Looking to do the JMT in the future with my daughter. How are the trails on both sides of Mt. Whitney, Narrow path with cliffs on the side, or are they more of a steep slope. Thanks

    • @HurlgoatHiker
      @HurlgoatHiker  7 лет назад +1

      Hello ThePreineja, Only twice that remember that the trail drops on both sides besides that it was a slope on one side and the trail is very well made.
      Happy Trails!

      I absolutely love the video. Best one documenting the JMT that I have seen. I hoping my two daughters, 14 and 15 will want to hike it in the next year or two if we can get a permit.

    I apologize if you've mentioned it elsewhere but which did you enjoy more the CT or the JMT?? Seems to me you liked the CT Trail more?? But I assume your money was more then also??

    • @HurlgoatHiker
      @HurlgoatHiker  7 лет назад +1

      Hello Mark Thanks for watching, I really liked both trails, I gave myself more than enough time to hike both trails and would rather spend my day off on the trail than in town
      Because i missed my original flight I had to buy another one which was pretty much my entire budget for the JMT, but it all worked out and had the time of my life on both trails, but If I had to choose one than I kinda liked the John Muir Trail more, I really liked walking by such huge granite walls, and all the beautiful little lakes hidden high up in the mountains,
      I hiked it in September which I highly recommend, amazing weather and a lot less people on the trail.

    I loved the hell out of your vid. But my only complaint with your vid as well with most others you guys show absolutlely nothing of night time camp life. Dinner, coffe, fire. Just almost nothing. Why. You guys do realize half the time is night right? The constant day time grind has to have some kickback time as well. This is where all your guys videos fall short and loose thousands and thousands of full length views just like me. Awsome video though. Next time put some night time dinner campfire talk into it. You make your viewers think what your doing is a full time grinding job and thats where you loose many of them!!!

    • @HurlgoatHiker
      @HurlgoatHiker  5 лет назад

      Hi Joseph, your right I should done more camp life videos and clips, that was my first time ever capturing video, talking to the Camera and editing video, I did learn a ton on that trip.
      I hiked the PCT SOBO last year and made a lot of end of the day camp videos in that series. I'm editing day 165 now. Thanks for the comment and Happy Trails.
