    I use both in my tank also. I think the salt is helping a mangrove grow I planted in the hob filter. It's growing pretty fast and helps a little with the nitrates. Your videos definitely helped me with my cichlid tank. Not new to fish keeping just never had african cichlids. Super cool fish there's always action in the tank.

    I have a hell of a time getting the Cichlid Salt to dissolve …I put it in a glass and stir it up like you do but I can leave the glass sitting for hours , stirring it several times and there is still a bunch of salt at the bottom of the glass

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад +2

      Try your best but dont stress it too much. It will eventually dissolve on its own in the tank. Try dropping the salt in one location like behind a piece of decor so you wont see the chunks. After a few hours they'll be gone 😁

    • @dhammaboy1203
      @dhammaboy1203 2 года назад

      I mix a small amount of Cichlid salts in some hot water & that helps dissolve it. Then I add cold water & prime after to fill up the bucket.
      It’s not perfect but it works better than mixing in just cold water. I had to stop adding it without dissolving as my idiots try and eat it (& it is a little corrosive so probably not great for them to eat).

  • @pulsedp
    @pulsedp Год назад

    Thanks mate, I was looking for a vid to check and see if my pre mix process was okay. I do it pretty much the same as you and add little amounts as I’m filling the tank continually storing the container because the salts sink and harden. A word of caution ⚠️ to people is that the salts react with water and heat up. They can cause minor burns and skin irritation as well as bleach clothes. The amount of times I’ve looked at my shorts only to discover little bleached spots from splashes…😧

    I do find it interesting - these 2 products are produced by the same company and could probably easily be combined as one product?

      Lol could be that…but there’s a lot involved in chemically combining things…I’m learning a lot about this from Seachem myself because I ask them so many questions lol. Like the copper in Trace is a safe form of copper found in dog and cat foods called copper sulfate and it’s used for the metabolic process….science is crazy lol

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  Год назад +1

      Preferably you would want to add it into a container where the new tap water can be mixed with it before adding to the tank. But thats not practical for everyone. If you cant do that I would wait until your tank is about 50% full and then add in the amount you need straight in the tank.
      Keep in mind that the salt dosage should be calculated based on the water change volume, not the entire tanks volume.

      Most of the mbuna we keep in our tanks are all Herbivores. There are very few species that are omnivores. So we tend to focus on feeding a veggie-based diet to all our mbuna. Even if you ever did have one of those few omnivores, feeding him veggie-based will be just fine.

And second if you put every two weeks salt and you forget it just one time with a water change then your fish suffer a shock because of the difference or all is ok? I mean isn't dangerous to just chaice the right parameters all the time?

      Chasing is not good...but the definition of chasing is vague. Dosing required elements and supplements on a scheduled basis is not "chasing"

      You dont HAVE to use any of them if your water parameters are already set for African Cichlids. If your PH is not correct for them there are a few methods that can raise your PH, like aragonite sand or crushed coral. But you could also use malawi buffer for that. Cichlid salt also isnt necessary if you already have hard water, if not use cichlid salt. And trace is just an additional benefit to ensure they have everything they need...but again not necessary. So Kev I got a question I thought by raising GH and KH of course that is the hardness but I didn't think that would add to the longevity of the substrate buffering potential. I just thought this helped with PH stability and swings in water parameters. I didn't think that would actually make the substrate buffering capacity last longer. I am not doubting you by any means was just wondering if you could expand on that a bit.

    • @patrickscerra8149
      @patrickscerra8149 2 года назад +2

      Just like the benefital bacteria in our tank, only as much as is needed to maintain the cycle. Therefore if we're supplementing the buffering power, the substrate won't have to leave out as much natural buffering. Thurs allowing it to last longer. However out of everything we do, it's consistancy that allow these fish the thrive. Hope this helps.
