Media Briefing: Shooting/SWAT Scene in 7900 block of N Stadium I Houston Police

Asst. Chief Wyatt Martin briefs the media on a shooting and SWAT scene in the 7900 block of N Stadium.
Preliminary Information:
At approximately 1:16 pm on Wednesday, June 26th, HPD received a call requesting a Welfare Check at an apartment at the above address. Out-of-state family members said the man in his 50s, who lived there had made "concerning comments" and the family was worried, as they had not heard from him. Officers were dispatched at about 1:21 pm and arrived at about 1:40 pm. They were unable to make contact with the resident in the apartment, so they contacted HFD at approximately 2:00 pm for help gaining entry. At 2:14 pm, with HFD, officers made entry into the apartment. As officers announced themselves at HPD, someone in the apartment fired a gun several times. Officers quickly backed out of the apartment, took cover and attempted to communicate with the person inside. The officers heard another shot from inside the apartment. Officers did not return fire, but instead called for backup from SWAT to check on the scene inside, knowing the individual was armed. At approximately 4:08 pm, SWAT officers used equipment to confirm the man inside was deceased, apparently from a self-inflicted wound.
