Opeth - Whispers of Golgotha (Black Rose Immortal) - unreleased 1992 rehearsal

- Once upon a time, Black Rose Immortal was not Black Rose Immortal.
The original version of this track, written way back in 1992, was titled Whispers of Golgotha. It featured a number of significant differences from its final iteration: the song structure, Mikael Åkerfeldt's early Black Metal-style vocals, its length (13 minutes vs. 20+!), and the rawness of this one-mic cassette recording are all immediately noticeable.
This is an unreleased transfer of Opeth's first recorded rehearsal of Whispers, captured in autumn 1992. As many Opeth fans will know, they didn't even have a bassist in those days - instead choosing to focus on songwriting and tightening up as a three piece by practicing almost every day of the week. So while this is a rough mix, you'll hear a hunger alongside the greatness of their early signature sound.
I'm often asked for live recordings of Black Rose Immortal. Sadly, the truth remains that it's still never been played in front of an audience. Whispers of Golgotha, in turn, has a bunch of rehearsal recordings from 1992-1995 - but was only played in front of a crowd once. This was at a sound check at The White Horse in High Wycombe, UK on October 30th, 1995.
All of this may change for Black Rose Immortal in the upcoming XXX tour in November 2022.
So, do you think they'll finally play BRI next month? Share what you think in the comments below, and enjoy this unreleased recording in the meantime.
Mikael Åkerfeldt - vocals and guitar
Peter Lindgren - guitar
Anders Nordin - drums

'Black Rose Immortal' is the song that changed everything for me. When I first heard at the age of about 13, I hated it. Nothing made sense. Then I listened again a few days later and became addicted, listening to it consecutively for hours at a time. I had never heard a piece of music sound remotely like this, or create the same feelings within me. Something clicked, and I couldn't listen to it enough - I had to unearth every little detail, and permanently etch these melodies on my mind. This is the music that inspired me to play the guitar, and ignited a love of Metal that endures to this day. Seeing it performed live would be a hugely significant occasion.
Those kind of people make me love opeth even more than I already do.
Thanks for sharing your experience with Black Rose Immortal
"Listened to it for hours at a time" -- so...twice a day?
@@sanbilge Pretty much haha.
It doesn't even matter, the "quality" of this recording. Just the fact that it's being played and getting that live sound is incredible. Feels like discovering a lost artifact and oogling over its beauty😍🖤
Thank you!
That unused riff at 6:45 is sick! Thanks for posting this
Sounds like black metal
18 years old Mikael! Thanks so much for sharing!!! Awesome!!🔥🔥
The karst back at it again making opeth fans happy
This is fascinating, thank you for all of this stuff! Black rose immortal is my favourite song and this has some unheard sections, so hugely apreciate it!
The unused section at 6:45 is especially nice.
@@BlackSailPass_GuitarCovers yes
I really hope they play this and I really hope it’s filmed by the band professionally because the new drummer is unreal
They did now, it's not a professional recording but it's quite good and you can find it on RUclips
And to think we will finally be able to hear this song played live this November, I wish they would’ve played it during the early days where mikael had those harsh black metal vocals
why are you sure that Black rose immortal will be played?
@@mantero6094 they did a poll where you can choose a song from each album they’ve ever done. Black Rose Immortal was one of the songs listen for Morningrise, let me tell you, everyone voiced for this song lol I’m sure of it
@@heenymeety406 I don't think it's that clear cut
Indeed, I'm not sure it's clear cut. The Night and the Silent Water & To Bid You Farewell are also fan favorites. I myself voted for "To Bid You Farewell". Can't wait till November, though!!! Waiting for this concert for 3 damn years.
@@sanbilge why would you vote for To Bid You Farewell when they’ve already played it live multiple times? They’ve NEVER played Black Rose Immortal live and NEVER will if it doesn’t get chosen.
This song literally changed my outlook towards music. It gives me freezing horripilations to hear what it evolved from. All the love to you good Sir for uploading such a magnanimous piece of history.
I 100% believe it will be played next month. Personally i find black rose immortal to be among the weaker opeth songs, but it will definitely still be VERY interesting to see the song be played live. It could be that the song being played by a band with nearly 30 years of experience compared to when they made it plus an incredible live sound makes this song finally stand out to me as well! There are certain parts in the song i adore, so we'll have to wait another month and see! And yes i honestly 100% believe it will be played, as it was a voting choice and it's in my opinion one of the most popular early opeth songs.
Every Opeth concert in Chile we ask to play BRI. I hope they play it in Chile next year.
Looking forward for february!!
I don't mean to bring you down here, but black rose immortal is one of those songs i never think will be played outside of the upcoming short 30th anniversary tour... Let's just hope they're filming the concert in London like they did with their 20th anniversary tour!
@@Lukkern well, here we are, they played it in Copenhagen on November 10th 2022 👌🏻
@@guuspalmero is there any video to watch it?
@@micheldroguettluckily there is: ruclips.net/video/MFGQ7epQKdo/видео.html

so THIS is what the internet is for
This makes my day!!!
Amazing. Keep up Gods work.
I've watched this video like 10 times at least simply to marvel at this early recording. I rarely make it all the way to the end, but the intro is just so evil-sounding and dark! Also, there's sth about the song title's allure, can't point my finger at it.
@The_Karst Today I heard the following...
"Before going to the studio to record Orchid, Mikael and the other guys had written a song called “Once Shadows Ablaze”. This was supposed to be the second song on the album, and the song is practically a continuation/extended version of In Mist She Was Standing’s outro. This track has never been played live, and only exists on very few rehearsal tapes from the early 1990s."
The ending of 'In Mist She Was Standing' is my favourite part of the album, and I would absolutely love to hear 'Once Shadows Ablaze'. Have you heard of it?
Hi! Yes, I have one of the only (2? 3?) copies of Once Shadows Ablaze in the world. I believe it was once meant to be an interlude song, so sitting between In Mist She Was Standing and whatever was originally meant to go next. But I guess they just decided to shorten and merge both tracks.
@@The_Karst That's very cool. It would be wonderful to hear it one day.
@@BlackSailPass_GuitarCovers I hope so too! It's unfortunately one of the recordings that I'm not allowed to share (at least for now). In any case, it's not that different from the Mist outro - just a little longer, tempo is a little slower, and I'd argue more atmospheric overall.
@@The_Karst How long is it, roughly?
@@BlackSailPass_GuitarCovers About four minutes - so a minute or so longer than the final outro.
Hope to hear it in London soon ,on the upcoming tour …

Woooo thank you ❤️

The second half sounds like a mix of Black Rose Immortal, Forest of October and Old School DM
BRI Black metal version
Lineup
Mikael Akerfeldt - Vocals And Guitar

Bro where from you find these gems?
30 years of trading! It's taken almost half a lifetime to build my Opeth collection.
@@The_Karst you're a keeper
What is this? Never heard of one
Fun fact: Mikhail was 18 at that time
No way! This can't be real!
Whisper of Golgosha?
I've never heard of it before!
I'm almost afraid to listen to it!
It's just an old version of Black Rose Immortal. This is their first ever recording of this one, so it's rough - but a piece of Opeth history!
Do you happen to know if it's true that Opeth can no longer play certain songs from Orchid due to legal reasons? I read this somewhere but I don't know if that's true or not
They’re about to play songs from that era in their upcoming tour so I’m not sure about that.
@@heenymeety406 that's also what I thought, but not all the songs from orchid were on there (and yes I know it was 3 songs per album on the polls) but if I remember correctly, twilight is my robe wasn't on there, and that hasn't been played since the mid 90's. But you're probably right
You don't even need to get permission to cover a song on stage, only to record it for commercial purposes. Even if they don't have distribution rights for some of their albums anymore (which I have no idea), they should be able to play them on stage.
@@sanbilge that's probably what it is that makes sense, thanks
@@Haxprocess actually in one of their recent shows during their “fan request” sections of their shows which they’d started to do again, mikael played an acoustic part off of Twilight Is My Robe and the beginning of Under The Weeping Moon. Apostle In Triumph was also on the poll which if you know about Opeth lore, it was the song that got them attention. I believe at the time that they did The Shepherds Bush live show they couldn’t include any songs from the Candlelight Records era which was the first 3 albums I believe on the live DVD because they played Demon Of The Fall and it was not included on it. But they did the Royal Hall show with songs from every album so I assume mikael doesn’t want to bother with any of the old songs anymore. I could be wrong but after watching interviews of him talking about the old songs he’s not really fond of them
Its really nice, also do they done other tracks during this autumn rehearsal?
Yes, a few! I think they also played Eternal Soul Torture and Forsaken Land of Spirits during this one.
1993
Funny, because now it is played live sir 😀
How cool is that!? It sounds so good, too.
