Candied haws are a traditional Chinese snack that originated in the Southern Song Dynasty. They are made by stringing wild fruits on bamboo sticks and dipping them in maltose syrup, which hardens quickly when exposed to wind. A common snack in the north in winter, they are usually made of hawthorns, which are frozen hard. They taste sour, sweet, and very cold. Hawthorn has many benefits.
