27 minutes of easy peasy, nice fix for a junker, took a little time to diagnose and found the problem right away. Question: could the borrowed blade possibly be ever so slightly bend to start with?
I like the TORO SR4 in the background there bud, those are awesome mowers. I just bought a minty nice one like that the other day only with a Briggs Quantum instead of the Loncin engine. It’s got those same quick release levers for the handle plus it came with the bag, side chute, mulch plug and all the manuals. Sold my other two older SR4’s yesterday, THIS is the one I want!
sometimes I watch your videos with my boys who are 3 and 5 years old and they think it’s hilarious every time you fast forward you pumping up the lawn mower lift. Your videos are helpful and entertaining
Bruce this if from Canada, pick this little set up, and you'll never use the old tap tool again, use your old taps but not the tool, this tool is awesome..... It's a 2 way ratcheting one, and makes it so easy, I use mine all the time.
Bruce, you better not tip that mower to far! If that thing falls and hits Trudy's suv, i don't even want to think about what she would do to you! LOL. Roger
Yikes, I have seen a blade adaptor which broke the key inside the adaptor but not the fw key or bent shaft. That was on a Honda engine . The adaptor Only came off with a 2 jaw puller, like your vids . I have recommended your channel many times. I have seen more seized break cables this year from leaving it outside I take off flywheels the redneak way Pry bar , hammer and wd40 Don’t forget the eye protection Great save there
Bruce Pender One I replaces, had cable from scrapped mower that fit The other I was able to free up with wd40 and a small dab of grease I had to take it off mower first and use good plyers to pull the cable back and forth with the wd40 and General Purpose grease. Also got a pressure washer ( funny thing it sucked in a nut into the carb bowl that got loose)
I like how you diagnosed that I learned something. So fly wheel key i dont mind seeing that again. wow that was right around the other side almost. I know the blade adapter sheared off but if they were to some way make the blade adapter with sheer bolts instead of one piece. so they would sheer and save the shaft and or the key. But saying that I wouldn't be good for profit lol. And there she blows Great job mate ;-) Smooooooooooooooth Should I put more Os In ;-)
funny at the one minute mark i was thinking sheered key and then you said it. haha, watched too many of your videos. i haven't seen past 1:30, so we will see what happens :)
Don't worry about the torque specs you say? I was trying to restore an old Tecumseh on an ariens snowblower. I broke the end off the crankshaft. And that was with a torque wrench lol.
How's she goin'? The back fire was a sure sign of timing. The key was cut pretty clean and out by a quarter turn. Wow that's a lot eh!! Nice fix. Take care!!
Nice save there. Use some wd-40 on broken keys to help get them off. See you have a Toro Super Recycler with the loncin engine there like the one I have. Look forward to that one. My carb was flooding out. Had to clean the brass seat with qtip and buffing compound. Carb cleaner wouldn't touch it.
I'm with you on the odd mower problems this year. I had my first one in my 8 years of small engine repair that the engine is a knocker and not salvagable. And at least 6 different mowers where the blade is on backwards. . . Pretty wild! That is a great trick with the flywheel. Great work!
Back in the day when we hand cranked the tractor or the car and it back fired it could break your thumb or wrist if you did not have your hand place on the crank correctly. So yes it can hurt. Great diagnosis and it does not seem there is any vibration in the mower after starting. Should be a great little mower for someone. Great video and thanks for sharing.
I have to agree with odd problems being more frequent this year. I just got a Briggs and Stratton 3.75 HP yesterday with a supposed "needs carb cleaning" and when I started it the RPMs went soooooo high and fuel started spitting out the gas tank cover vents!!!! I think a blown head gasket :(
Right or an intake vale leaking back. I would take off the head (if it is a flathead) and get the enging to TDC and see if you can turn the valves with your fingers. A good valve won't spin
@@kenhilson786 Thanks Ken, So an update. I took the engine apart. It had many, many issues: blown head gasket (found traces of mouse nest so that's probably why it heated up and blew the gasket) it also had sheered key and 4 fins broken on the flywheel and a huge hole in the plastic intake tube and last but not least the crank shaft is a bit bent. I replaced the engine with one from a free mower that was rusted out but runs perfect. Now I know what to look for when I buy another mower thanks to you guys; thank you for the valuable info you guys rock
Everybody is bringing old machines out of hiding as money is tight this year. The ones with sheared keys are the ones the regular guy has a hard time fixing.
Bruce Pender my neighbor has a nice Toro that his son “hit something”. Sheared the fw key and the blade adapter key. $10 for the adapter, I had some keys, and now my neighbor thinks I am a mower genius. He has since brought me an edger that he got from a barn clean out, I fix, we sell and split 50/50.
I just got one of these sat outside too long and the cables and the front drive stuff rusted tight. Swapped the engine to a unit that smoked and it was smooooooooth. Nice job man.
Bruce Pender can the induction plug be switched back to the RJ19LM without fear of problems? GM came out with Dexcool 150,000 coolant in the late 90s. If you leave it in 150k, you need a teaspoon to shovel it out. My mechanic said leave it for the first 36k for warranty and then at 36,001 miles replace with green Ethelne glycol coolant. Ours lasted 256,000 miles and was running good when I sold it. Not every thing labeled Progress is progress.
I've never had a flywheel come off so easily! I've done lots and many are monstrous struggles. That's why I created specialty pullers for both Briggs and Tecumseh flywheels.
My feelings on the flywheel coming off so easy is that when the key sheared, the flywheel turned on the shaft, thus breaking the two pieces free...Just my thoughts.
Sometimes the metal from the key gets infused right into the gap between the flywheel and the crankshaft even when fully split. . I actually broke a flywheel once trying to pull it.
Good job showing us how to do it correctly. I take the nut off, take the cup off, put the nut on the threads to protect the crank from mushrooming, use a pry bar between the flywheel and the boss on the block, and take a wack on the nut with a 4 lb hammer while prying the flywheel up. It works, but I sometimes worry about cracking the block, messing up the crank, or something like that. Light wack first, pry bar away from the magnets. 2nd wack if needed, slightly harder.
love quantum's , fixed one the guy said it wouldn't start he kept pulling the rope and nothing all i did was spray carb spray in the throat of the carb 3 pulls later it started and been running ever since
Great jb just thought i would ask do's the butterfly on a carb with a manually adjusted choke need to be fully closed from cold startup or should it be fully open ?
The choke butterfly should be closed on start up to increase the fuel to air mixture. When running it needs a smaller fuel to air mixture thus needing an open choke. .
