Matthew Ryan Right??! Crystal clear and informative. I just wish some folks would actually listen to him, and the crew sometimes!! Fish till you're broke!! haha! ;)
Had a blast! Slinging iron all day on a great boat can't beat that! Awesome job on the vid Drew. I'll see you again soon so we can boat some more of them yellows...Ahhhh!!!!
OpporTUNAty * The fishing this year has been so good it's making me dizzy!! I can't keep up with all of the reports, and social media accounts, and photos, and phone calls and texts... whew... !! see what I mean?? Whoooo! ;)
+Kelson Quan Thank you! 2015 is the year we are all going to be talking about when fishing goes back to "normal". I'm doing everything I can to spend as much time on the water, and take advantage of every moment before it's over. I hope you're fortunate enough to do the same - tight lines!!
love the vids man!!! I really wanted to go out on this boat after seeing your vids but unfornutaley i wont be able this summer:( I will have to settle with the local yellowtail fishing out of longbeach. Maybe next summer
Austin Fife The tuna and Yellowtail bite up in your area is great right now, so you won't have to settle - go out and get yours!! Don't miss out on this "once in a decade(s)" fishing season ;)
Hey Drew, I'm a big fan of your vids, they're effin awesome! Quick question: I will be going out on my first offshore trip for tuna and yellowtail. Just want to know if I will be safe with my setup for this type of trip.. Daiwa Lexa 300HS-P, spooled with 50lb PP braid, and a 30 foot leader of 30lb mono. I have it paired with an 8 foot XH 15-40 Californian Calico Special. What do you think?
Everardo Hurtado The local 3/4 day boats are already getting into some fish that would put your setup to the ultimate test. The Lexa combined with that top-shot will net you about 150+/- yards of line. On a long soak, a lot of that will be fly-lined out, not leaving you much to fight your fish with. Also, that 7.1.1 gear ratio is going to make getting that line back on the spool a challenge. A Lexa 400 or Torium 16 HGA may be a better choice. I have never used a Californian Calico Spc - so I have no say on that.
I realized he talked about the downside and drift side and I was wondering where the 2 ends of the boat where is the the downside the current coming towards you or away?
Joe Here's a long standing phrase: "When the wind's in your face, you're in the right place - If the wind's at your back, you'll have an empty sack." Having the wind in your face, when on the drift with no anchor, your bait will go away from the boat (because the boat is being pushed in the direction of the wind). If you feel the wind at your back, and drop your bait, it will normally go under the boat, which is terrible. A lack of wind, or a super strong current will sometimes mix up this "rule". Port/Starboard (left/right) doesn't matter, just keep the wind in your face. Almost always, you should be facing with your back to land or shore. Hope that helps. Tight lines!!
Your vids get better every time man. And I could be wrong but the guy on the bow throwing irons that said going out guys looked like Christopher Monroy he is one hell of a fisherman. He has some sick vids too check his channel out. All in all man great vid keep it up maybe I'll bump Into you on the SD this August. Tight lines!
Chris setup the jackpot for that trip, and you're right, he did nail his share of the fish that day. The San Diego is redefining what a "great trip" is in 2015. The bar has been set so high now, it's frikkin awesome!! I'll see ya out there :)
I'm currently throwing a: blue and white Stinger, solid mint (Turquoise) Stinger, mint and white Tady 45, mint and white Caivo Landon4x, and a Shimano Coltsniper in Wonder Candy with a VMC hook(s) swap. That Caivo jig with the double ring has worked really well and shows the wear. On my last trip aboard the San Diego I caught five Yellowtail on the Coltsniper stickbait pictured below. I was using a Daiwa Lexa-400 (8.1.1) to rip the bait full speed just under the surface. If you get the speed right it swims just like a surface iron. Got quite a few reaction bites that way. Change the retrieve speed from a full rip to an absolute crawl, mix it up. It also picked off a few Calico's when the fishing slowed. Picture of the jigs below: drive.google.com/open?id=11yrz-2NCapgmDDpU0D-4ragY-t7uoRcU drive.google.com/open?id=12u_Iavse8gVjv_76CKVwQDfZUH612ob1
Andrew Kloster Yo dude thanks for the tips went out on Seaforth Landing on Monday we put 65+ yellowfin in the boat 4 for myself. All fly line Live bait 25lb set up avet reel seeker rod. 21lb was my best of the 4. I did throw some coltsnipers but no bites. Thanks again
Rad! That's fun-time fishing! I thought you were going for Yellowtail, so my previous reply doesn't make sense, haha! I may go out tomorrow (depends if I can haul my lazy azz out of bed) and throw some shiny jigs at those YF. drive.google.com/open?id=1MvU1cV352MjXC0ykDbb_WC10ong64T0e Did anyone catch any on the popper? It's super fun ;)
I would like to know are u able to still catch tuna (yellowtail, yellowfin, etc) in a fall month as in september because ill be going out and would like to know. Thanks and very great channle i subed and liked!! Tight lines Bro!!
Rasheed Shafiq Thank you! That's a really tough question, and to be honest I'm not qualified to answer it. Based on last years fishing though, some of my most epic Yellowfin trips happened in mid to late September. When the Yellowfin moved north, the local Yellowtail bite (which was already pretty good) in San Diego really took off (and didn't slow down until December!). An added bonus is in the Fall months school is back in session, and the vacationers have gone home - more room on the boats! I'll see ya out there ;-)
I've never had a bad trip aboard the SD. Cpt. Bostian and his crew run a clean, and professional operation. When the fish are biting, the SD can sellout several days in advance, so be sure to lock a reservation.
what a great video. yellowtail's pull so damn hard, I love it when my reel just spins out of control. I had a question, did you free line your bait or did you mix it up with a Lure?
On this trip I fly-lined a few Sardines and tossed the surface iron. Both were equally effective. You could have thrown just about anything in the water and got bit - it was pretty epic.
Talked to you on the trip. What was the deal with the fish mix up? The guy in orange claimed your fish? I overheard but didn't ask, until now, that is...
He was VERY adamant about it, but refused to watch the GoPro video when I brought it to him. I posted that whole scene to my Facebook account, but cut it from this video because it was kind of a vibe kill.
Hey I am only 13 years old, but I live fishing I am great caster but I'm going on a 3/4 soon, I was wondering if you think there's gonna be a spot for me to comfortable cast without being shoulder to shoulder, or are the boats that crowded. thanks And Great Video!
Because the fishing has been so off the charts, you can expect a full boat :/ Casting surface iron in those conditions can be challenging. If the bow gets too crazy, try a spot forward of the bait tank. The birds or boiling fish will normally tell you where you need to be. Don't forget to look behind you!! Have a great trip :)
Drift fishing with 58 people of varying levels of experience or ability can create some chaotic moments for sure. I've gotten used to it, I guess. "Angles make tangles" and "Follow your fish" The golden rules which keep most of us out of wrecks.
There are numbered burlap sacks hanging around the bait tank. When you sign the Coast Guard manifest at the beginning of the trip you are assigned a sack number. You put your fish in your numbered sack, and get back to fishing as soon as possible. A crew member will remove your fish and staple a tag matching your number to the gill plate of your fish and then drop the fish into the refrigerated fish hold. At the end of the trip you collect the fish with your matching tag. The system works pretty good.
Skip marriage & having kids and you'd be surprised how many fun and expensive hobbies you can afford. Heck, I even own a cat so I don't have to pay attention to it, haha! ;)
The boat is the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing. It is a Full Day boat (5:30am - 5:30pm) and the price is currently $155.00 Tackle can be rented at the landing for the days trip. A valid Passport or Passport Card is mandatory for trips into Mexican waters. Great boat and crew. The boat gets crowded in the summer for a reason. Much appreciated :)
I will be on the San Diego this Tuesday. The count has been insane lately. I've been fishing the 150 lately and been catching bombs
ricky nguyen
I'm thinking about taking the Tuesday trip also, but I can't commit to a ticket just yet... I hate commitment, haha!
Banana on the boat and still all of that good luck! Imagine thinking Bananas on a boat is bad luck?!?
The banana prolly caused me to bash the back of that guys head with my rod, haha!
Great video.... was wondering if the boat crew cleaning the fish will do the kama cuts for you? Thanks in advance.
Yes. They will provide Kama "collars", bellies, slabs etc. Some special cutting may require a minor increase in fillet fee$

Great fishing, but, thank god I hae my own boat. Absolute mayhem.
Hey man you going to be on the SD this mon or tues?
+mixxedbagbrandon Crap, only 3 months late seeing this message. Oops :(

Mark Castillo
On this trip I was using a Trinidad 16A, 20A, and a TranX 500HG.

definitely miss a bite like this hoping to catch my first tuna and dorado this year
With the end of the El Niño cycle we have to work a little harder, but I'm sure with a little preparation and luck these types of bites will continue.
Andrew Kloster hopefully man. definitely planning an overnight this year.
Some nice fishing, but it's madness on that boat. This is why I go limited load.
Drift fishing with 58 people of varying levels of experience or ability can create some chaotic moments for sure. I've gotten used to it, I guess. "Angles make tangles" and "Follow your fish" The golden rules which keep most of us out of wrecks.
So how do you know which is your fish you caught? Or do you not get to keep what you catch?

Is that a 809 or 808 abyss?? Thanks drew
PJ, it's the 9 foot 909.
Damn miss being out on the water where i live lots of sand no water. So depressed.
Ouch, sorry to hear that. It makes your time on the water that much better though!!
Andrew Kloster One hot bite going on nice!
watched almost all your videos soooo sick!!! what i goes through my mind is how do you afford it haha 145$ for 3/4 day is alot.....
Skip marriage & having kids and you'd be surprised how many fun and expensive hobbies you can afford. Heck, I even own a cat so I don't have to pay attention to it, haha! ;)

In this video I believe I was using a Shimano TranX, Trinidad 20a, and Trinidad 16a.
How much is this trip and due they provide the gear

what kind of rod where u using on 6:15 and what specs on it
The rod is an eight foot Calstar GG 6480C 30-60#. Love it, great stick.
And what rod??
I used a mixture of Phenix and Calstar rods on this trip. The Calstar GG 6480C was a good all around rod for this trip if I had to chose only one.
What Reel and line are you using at 6:10?
The reel is a Shimano Trinidad 16, and the line is 65# Shimano Power Pro. The topshot was 20 feet of 30# PLine mono.
1/2 day trip??
3/4 day trip.
i fucking love the san diego
"West coast's finest"
What reel do you have on your smaller rod
This day I was using a Trinidad 20A & 16A. The 16A was on the Phenix rod.
what model Trinidad was that?
Was using a Trinidad 16A on the Phenix rod, and a 20A on the Calstar.
Watch at 4:39 funny as hell hahahahaahahahahahahaha

Yeah... That fish pulled right when he stood up straight and - crash! He caught a lot of fish, but at that particular moment he wasn't having a great day, haha!
What if Mexico banned Americans from fishing in Mexican waters.🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I don't see how that would be beneficial to either side. I guess Americans would just take their money someplace else.
@@AndrewKloster not necessarily, Americans are the #1 buyers of illicit drugs, so both sides will win.
