In the last interview that Andy Wood ever gave, he opened up about his fight with drug addiction and what life after rehab was like. “It’s a total struggle,” he said. “When you first get out, you’re on this pink cloud, and it’s pretty easy. [But] After a while, things start getting more real and you just have to stay straight a second at a time.” Drug use was a demon that haunted Wood for the majority of his brief life. Alcoholism and substance abuse were prevalent in his family growing up. At the age 7 he got drunk off his first kinder beer.
At 12 he discovered marijuana. And throughout his teens those closest to Andy encouraged him to experiment with a range of harmful substances including LSD, crystal meth, cocaine, and heroin. It’s heart-breaking to think about.
But Andy discovered something else at a young age as well... rock and roll... including the music of KISS, the Stones and Zeppelin. As he listened to the rock of his youth in the 70s, he dreamed of becoming a rockstar. And in 1980, at the age of 14, he formed the band Malfunkshun with his older brother Kevin. Even though he was just a kid, Andy was a natural showman, brimming with charisma and heart. He had a dominating voice and also proved to be a talented songwriter. All of this, along with boyish rockstar look, he captivated audiences as he and Seattle’s underground music scene grew up together.
Musically, the sky was the limit for Andy. And by 1986 Malfunkshun had recorded their first two singles on the pioneer grunge compilation, Deep Six. This 14-track collaboration showcased Seattle’s up-and-coming rock talent, with the likes of Soundgarden, Green River, The Melvins, The U-Men, and Skin Yard.
But for all the positive momentum, Andy didn’t have a future if he couldn’t get clean. Drug dependency had taken over his life and he knew it. So, at the age of 21 he checked himself into rehab. Andy did well there and soon recovered. But as he walked out the doors into his new life, he was freaking out. Going home meant going back to his old circle of negative influences. He didn’t know what to do.
Chris’ home became a musical sanctuary and the two vocalists became fast friends. Though differing in personality and perspective, the pair enjoyed a season of intense creativity, collaboration, and friendly competition. The two singers wrote songs on a daily basis, played them for each other and compared notes. While Chris was contemplative and given to a more analytical process, Andy rarely revised his initial take.
Poll: Which artists who passed away in your lifetime, do you miss the most today?
Neil Peart, easily.
David Bowie
Tom Petty. Randy Rhodes.
Clarence Clemons
Tom Petty
John Bonham
Louis Armstrong (oops showing my age but I was only a kid then)
It has to be Gary Moore
The night my dad died I was leaving the hospice, started my car, and Say Hello To Heaven had just begun on the radio. Then, Hurt by NIN came on next. God is a deejay…I still tear up every time I hear Say Hello.
I'm from Seattle (still live here), and was in my addiction at the same time all of that was going on. The scene was so fantastic and dangerous at the same time. I ended up getting clean October 9th 1992 and became a Chemical Dependency Counselor for about 20 years.. I continue to stay sober and am still helping others, just in a different way. Loved this tribute to Andy. For anyone still out there suffering, there is help... don't give up. If I can do it, anyone can do it ❤️
Thank you so much for sharing that my friend. Very inspiring.
God bless you man. You are doing a wonderful thing man and congratulations on staying sober, it's not easy to do by all means.
Thank you for opening up about this, and thank you for mastering yourself to be good to yourself and others. I don't know you, but I love you, sister. Be well.
I always wondered why heroin was so popular on the coasts. It was not very popular at all in Texas. I’m sure there were users, but mostly it was cocaine and ecstasy here during that period. Now I think heroin has made some inroads here, thanks to big pharma pushing the pain management movement and doctors handing out prescriptions of hydrocodone.
I have a few Seattle stories, Way back when Heart was new. You sound like a good girl, I'll add you in my prayers. Not that God hears me, but hey, can't hurt.
“Far Behind” by Candlebox was also about Andy. One of my favorites
Dr. Kelso you like Candlebox too?!?!?!?
Also Would by AIC
The Mother Love Bone album is one of the great lost albums in rock, it’s phenomenal.
It’s stardogshit
Candlebox cover is great and even more meaningful when people figure that the singer was actually very close to Andrew wood.
FOREVER YOUNG GRUNGE ROCK! LONG, LIVE GRUNGE 💋🫶🏻🤘🏻🤍🪽🦴🇺🇸💋
andy and chris are my all time favorites. rip
Lost my mom 4 years ago and my dad 3 months ago listening to Say Hello 2 Heaven gives me comfort
Man, we have lost wayy to many good vocalists from the seattle scene. Andy, kurt, layne, chris and now mark lanegan. RIP all of them. Legends for sure.
I'm still crushed on Chris Cornell passing. I love his voice very much.
Gentle groove, Bone China, Chloe Dancer, Crown of Thorns, Stargazer, Man of Golden Words. All killer songs I've listened to thousands of times.
I would play Temple of the Dog for my son when he was little. He loved that album growing up. Started to play drums when he was about 4 Always would say he was going to be Pearl Jam’s drummer when he grew up. He passed away this past April from a Fentanyl overdose. “Say Hello to Heaven” has become very bittersweet. Thank you so much for this video Professor.
My deepest sympathies. Thanks for sharing.
So sorry for your loss
Best wishes to your family, no one should ever have to bury their child 💜
🙏😞🥀
Sorry for your loss ❤
Andy Wood was SO GOOD, If he had lived, there’d be no Pearl Jam today…. His death STILL HURTS as bad as when we lost Layne Staley and Chris Cornell….
Temple of the Dog is a great album, but don't forget "Would?" by Alice in Chains. It was written by AiC guitarist Jerry Cantrell as a tribute to his friend, Andrew Wood.
Amen! ❤
Layne wore Andrew's shirt in the Would? video.
Far Behind by Candle box was also a tribute to Wood
Literally tattooed above my heart "Say Hello 2 Heaven ~Chris Cornell"
Chris is one of the greatest vocalist of all time, he is sadly missed.
Andy and Chris were so important and should never be forgotten. This actually made me cry. I've just shared this to Andy's Mom and family. Much love
Did you send it to Xana La Fuente?
@@monicajean37 I don't have an acquaintance with Xana
you know them? i am from florida and at 64, never knew of him... but he, along with tom petty are my favorites..
Chris' death was so hard to take. He looked like he was going to survive. He'd got through what seemed to be the hardest part. Such a great musician. He took Andy Wood and Eddie Vedder under his wing. Temple is a great album. I saw Chris solo and was so pleased he did a heap of songs off Temple including say hello 2 heaven. Miley's cover was great too. Didn't see that working out the way it did.
Look for her cover of Zombie during the pandemic lockdown. The cranberries praised it and when I saw the video I understood why. She knocks it out of the park.
And chester Bennington
If you lived there, then, the death of Andrew Wood, prior to the release of The debut MLB album was a huge blow to the local scene. We all felt it.
The Seattle music scene was not just Nirvana. It was all styles, playing together, rock, grunge, punk, metal, doom, you name it. All bands playing together, competing, but going to each other’s shows.
I’ve always felt ‘Reach Down’ was a beautiful tribute to the magic that was Andrew Wood.
I saw Mother Love Bone at the Legends Club in Tacoma about a month before the OD. You're absolutely right, the scene was eclectic and inclusive. (I hate to use the word inclusive for what it has come to mean these days, but it's the word that works to describe the scene back then). Andrew's death was devastating.
@@derekjohnson77that’s the show I believe that they played “Dollar Short” that is the music of PJ’s “Alive” with Andy’s melody and lyrics. I’ve got the lyrics in Scot Barbour’s book but there’s no known recording of it except Stone saying in an interview “I think there’s a taper down in Tacoma who recorded that show.” Those of us who care would kill for that recording. There does exist on Scot’s MLB page a version of “Black” with just Stone and Andy.
I didn't know about that. Interesting that I was there for it. I also remember stepping into the parking lot afterwards and hearing gun shots a couple blocks away. So we hustled out of there.
@@fallforautumn
@@derekjohnson77hey I apologize, I’ve got my shows mixed up. It was actually the Portland show. The Legends show is on here complete. Check it out.
wow.. you lived this?
"If somebody left you out on a ledge. If somebody pushed you over the edge. If somebody loved you & left you for dead.
You got 2 HOLD ON to your time till you break through these times of trouble." From my favorite Temple Of The Dog song "Trouble". Reminds me that even when I hurt I have to stay the course and hold on. Sometimes it ain't easy but you gotta give it your best... Love 2 you all!
Thanks for sharing.
Took the words straight outta me mouth. I looove that song too & especially the lines u quote. I guess that makes us kinda kindred, lol. Seriously tho, when CC sings them, it's so raw it bleeds. Everywhere. *sigh*
@@bsabrandi711the whole album is such a contradiction. So much optimism paired with so much pain.
Don't try to do it
Don't try to kill your time
You might do it
Then you can't change your mind...
sigh... Miss 'em... Layne too :(
@@l.jamesbarlow3137 I think it hits hard bc I was such a huge fan of Mother Love Bone & felt that loss of what could have been & things were changing so fast...
You've got a hold on to your time
Till you break through these times of trouble...
Yeah, I miss all of them too: Andy, Chris, Layne, Scott...I could go on but I don't wanna start crying @ 4am on a Monday morning if ya feel me, lol
@@bsabrandi711 I was kinda sad but you mentioned Scott and I got angry! I don't know why but him & Shannon Hoon dying make me loathe the corporate side of the industry even more. That's a lie!
I know why. Endless touring. The proverbial cash cow. Milking the life out of them when clearly they needed to get off the road & just rest. Little compassion for the human condition may have helped...But that's another story...
Cornell is the greatest of all time, I am still crushed by his loss. RIP
The Man of Golden Words
I was introduced to MLB in 1991. Stargazer, Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns, Man of Golden Words are my favorites. Ill put on my headphones and play Shine and Apple back to back. Andrew Wood was a bright shooting star that burned out too quickly. He had so much to offer to this world.
Rest in Peace Stargazer.
Andy is why I wanted to become a rockstar. RIP Andy
I never knew about Andy until Chris did Temple of the Dog. It was so exceptional. I have to admit I'm still waiting for someone to do an album like that for Chris, for the hole that's in our heart from his leaving us. Thank you shining a light on this.
Andrew wood was a musical genius
Apple definitely features his finest work
He is very much under appreciated
Man…I’ll remember that night forever. I was on a bender and thought my heart was going to burst when we got a call from a friend who was seeing Stone.
Talk about scared straight.
I never wanted to come down so bad in my life.
Andy was one in a million.
My daughter is named after an Andrew Wood song and she has already skated a Jeff Ament skate park (right here in my small Montana town). Love Rock isnt just music, it's a way of life. Love Rock awaits you, People!
Chloe? Just a guess...
@@michaelminch5490 You got it!
Hendrix, I still remember my sister's friend crying, while sitting on the street curb. John Lennon - I was walking up the stairs to go to bed when the news broke on tv, so many . . . at 62, I've seen my parents' generation of singer/song writers and mine now rapidly dying off. So many genres - from Karen Carpenters pitch perfect voice to EVH's screaming guitars to the songs of Tom Petty.
I wasn't into this genre or even knew about Andy but there are too many kids growing up in eff'd up homes with eff'd up parents. That I know personally. Until you have lived through survivor's guilt, you do not know pain.
10 1/2 years sober and one year cancer free this month the story hits home thank you Professor
The first of many sad, sad stories out of this Seattle scene, from 1990 to 2017.
Agreed. Andy was amazing
Man, this story hits really hard to home for me. I too, was an alcoholic and dope fiend. I went through the plethora of drugs as well, but lady heroin is the one that really hooked its claws into me. I let it take everything from me. I ended up homeless and broken. I had overdosed several times, and was brought back luckily. I started using at 12 and I'm 51 now. I went through many rehabs and psych wards. Today, I'm in sober living and have been clean for a year now, and I'm having some of the best times of my life being sober. My only regret is, that I wished I'd have done it sooner. It's truly one day at a time. Thanks Prof, for covering this. It just makes me truly grateful and more determined to stay clean and sober.
Htiek thank you for being so vulnerable and open my friend. Congratulations on being sober for a year. Hang in there my friend. I'm here for you if you ever need anything and I MEAN that.
You mentioned in the Silent Lucidity video the other day… this is one I can’t hear without getting choked up. Very powerful.
@@ProfessorofRock Thank you Adam, that truly means a lot.
you got a lot of life left to live brother. make it your best.
Congratulations on your sobriety 👍
There are too many words, and not enough to words to describe the impact Andy and Chris had on teenage me.
This video opened an old wound for me. Chris Cornell's death left a gaping hole in my heart. I am twenty years sober, alcohol free, but watching the Seattle scene lose so many amazing people to addiction makes the wound deeper. My city. Thanks for sharing this tribute, Andrew Wood was star-crossed. He was a superb talent.
In 1991 into 1992 I was 17 and along with the usual teenage angst of trying to find ones self and understand your place in the world, I suffered my first peer death when a friend died in a car wreck along with 3 others in his car, November 23, 1991. It was a brutal emotional time. Between Pearl Jam Ten, Soundgarden Badmotorfinger, Temple of the Dog and of course Nirvana's Nervemind, these albums were equally about releasing my rage, finding solace, and giving voice to my confusion. These albums are imprinted on my mind forever so much so that I know every single nuance without even having to summon it, whenever I hear these songs to this day. It floods back like 30 years have only passed in a few days.
Greatest Era of music ever. Those albums along with Facelift and Dirt got me through my teenage years.
@@jjmadoublen7375YES indeed!
was a junior in high school just 30 min away from seattle in 1992. found nirvanas nevermind first. fell in love with the music that surrounded me and was soon ass deep into all seattle music! so many memories and even if my hero’s have passed on, the memories can’t be taken away. got too see all these bands except mlb or temple of the dog perform. one of my favs was soumdgarden/screaming trees/ reverend horron heat. pearl jam/mudhoney was tits too!
As a member of the fellowship of recovery , music is my key to spiritual balance and healing in recovery.
Very cool. Thanks Brian.
@@ProfessorofRock and for that matter in life in general as well.
@@ProfessorofRock and EVH (so fresh I think he's still here)
That Temple of the Dog album was one of the best albums of the grunge period imo. I never get tired of it.
I can’t like this episode enough. Andrew influenced me as a singer and songwriter early on. MLB was a revelation. Andy was the frontman I wanted to be. TOTD was an amazing album of love and loss and showcased what a unique genius Chis was as a songwriter.
I’m thankful I got to see TOTD in NYC on their only tour.
The day Chris died devastated me. I couldn’t listen to his music for months without crying. When music is so good, it moves you to tears because there are no more words to hold the pain.
I’m glad to see Andrew Wood get his due. He influenced an entire genre of music and artists with his talent and love of life. They both flew too close to the sun.
as a rock singer myself, i too was the same like you unable to listen to Chris cornells voice for a very long time. because every time i listened to his music or tried to cover his songs i would cry. it wasnt until recently im able to sing soundgarden songs, audioslave songs etc without getting choked up or crying. sometimes i get choked up still for some songs. especially for some lyrics since chris is still not here. 😢💔
“Poor stargazer, she’s got no tears in her eyes” these lyrics are directed towards Xana Andrew’s girlfriend.
Andy's Fiance actually - Xana LaFuente
20 years I used drugs. Terrible time in my life. I’ve been sober almost 7 years now. I’m 44yo now so I was the perfect age when that music hit. Those guys were my hero’s. Eddie is really all that remains. All those dudes should still be here writing and playing music for us. It’s sad to think that they died so young. I guess the moral of my message is I know the lows of addiction and the highs from music. Both drugs. I hope they are all resting easy and still rocking out in heaven. 🤘🤘
For me "Temple Of The Dog" solidified the end of glam rock, hair metal and all the corniness of the 80's...it rekindled the marriage of gospel, blues and soul that originally gave birth to rock. Just as Led Zeppelin and so few other bands had in years past. All it's tracks from the first to the last. "Wooden Jesus" "Pushing Forward Back" "Your Savior" and "Times of Trouble"....this album is definitely in my top 5 all-time
I'm a huge lover of Mother Love Bone & Andy. A favorite not heard much is "Lady Godiva Blues" off the extra disk of "Apple".
RIP LaAndru, you should have shined Monkey Boy!
One of the greatest most transcendent and majestic vocal performances ever.
I listened to this a lot after my brother passed. A lot of what is said in the song applies to how it felt losing him to cancer. Which was the dog that broke his bone in this case, not addiction. The island was more the fact he was much older so he wasn't living at home with the family so there was a separation there. Not to share too deeply, but this song was a huge part of my grief process over him and it helped get a lot of the anger out. Still hard to listen to today... I found myself grieving the loss of Chris Cornell very deeply because of the connection I had to his music, this song being at the top of that list, so of course I listened again to grieve. I'd like it to be a very long time before I have to put this one back into rotation, but the song is one of the best I've ever heard. Period.
I'm from the UK and saw mother love bone in 89 while on holiday in Seattle.Next time i saw some of the band was in the Riverside Newcastle UK in 91 ,they had a new singer called Eddie
Cameron Crowe's outstanding documentary PEARL JAM: TWENTY gives a terrific overview of Andy Wood's immense influence over the Seattle scene.
It's especially heart-breaking watching Chris Cornell so clearly affected by his death even so many years later.
Thank you for sharing. I will look for this movie. -Still so interested in knowing more about the grunge era.
It was a handful of years before I really appreciated music. So in most ways I still don’t know much about any of these stories.
Thank you, RIP Andy & Chris we miss you!
I loved Mother Love Bone, I discovered them with Apple, which by than Andrew Wood had already passed away. This was not just an album you listened to, it was an album that you lived with you and inhabited your soul. Rest in peace Andrew Wood , and thank you for your music
Thank you Adam for your considerate, emotional tribute to this great singer, showman and musician. Andrew Wood is and will always be one of those people that I cannot forget. He was so beautiful and happy to be on stage. Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Shannon Hoon and many more really crushed my heart. When someone overdoses it is so hard to fathom. I truly love Mother Love Bone and Every Single song! "Chloe Dancer" is my favorite but... "Stargazer" and "Crown of Thorns" are also up there.
"Say Hello to Heaven" is one of my favorite songs from Temple of the Dog tribute album.
Thanks again for everything you do, Adam. These really touch my heart. 💙
That whole scene was like a shooting star ripping through the sky then gone leaving a trail of beautiful songs to remind us. RIP Chris Cornell and Andrew Wood Say Hello to Heaven
That's a great way to put it.
Andy was the Freddie Mercury of grunge. I first heard Mother Love Bone in 1990 and instantly loved the Apple album, this was before Pearl Jam and when grunge was just starting. Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were just starting to get huge but the Temple of the Dog record by far was the best thing in the early 90s. I would highly recommend people check out Apple and the one off Temple of the Dog record, you won't be disappointed. Being a kid in the 90s the Seattle thing aka Grunge was truly the last great rock n roll movement and the pre internet era that didn't suck. RIP Chris and Andy.
@Steve A maybe not grunge but definitely a gateway into the alternative rock thing. I think Andrew Wood called themselves Love Rock which is actually a subgenre.
Thank you. We still miss Landrew (Andrew) and I think about him often. He was a genuinely beautiful human being. It broke my heart when he died. 333 Love Rock Awaits.
I will never forget walking home in the snow from my girlfriends place in 1990...a dude in a nova picked me up to give me a ride....friend from high school...total leather jacket heavy metal guy who also played on my baseballl team....as I watched the snow fall and being grateful he picked me up...he was playing the mother love bone tape....I was kind of taken back when he was surprised I didnt know who they were...and I was the manager of a music store age 18...I was introduced to a new level of understanding of music ...and life and compassion...this fateful night in Centrailia.
Chris Cornell was an amazing songwriter and singer, his voice would often give me chills especially when he did his acoustic work absolutely amazing call me a dog was one of my favorite songs he will be sadly missed
Call Me A Dog might be the best song on that album FULL of gems. Wooden Jesus doesnt mearly get the respect it deserves either. Dont get me started on Times of Trouble either....
And when it’s my time to throw the next stone
It never ceases to amaze me how amazing Cornell’s voice was.
Doing this about Andrew and then mentioning Doug Hopkins, makes you a true Professor in my mind.
Thank you for acknowledging the greatness of Andy.

Two of my favorite records of all time: "Apple" and "Temple Of The Dog". The music that came out of the NW is some of my absolute favorite music ever made. That region at that time is the definition of "lightning in a bottle"
Bainbridge Island! The Rock! It's beautiful. A daily commute into downtown Seattle via ferry boat... how great is that!?
This was incredible. My girlfriend at the time was attending University of Washington at this time, and i made the 200 mile drive from Eastern Wa to see her on weekends. I got to see Mother love bone....incredible. Adam...this made me cry, thanks for the incredible work you do👅❤😁😍

As a long time Seattleite this story really hits hard. Both for Andrew and Chris and the epic Temple of the Dog album. If you lived here during that time that Seattle was the center of the music world, it was special. I do have to correct one aspect of your story about Hunger Strike. That was filmed at Discovery Park in Seattle, not on Bainbridge Island. Thanks Professor!
I find it interesting that Chris had all this beautiful things to say about his friend, but yet could not apply it to his own life and left us the way he did. Shows that it is much easier to help someone else than to apply what you have learned to your own problems. Addiction, depression, nasty stuff. RIP.
I knew exactly who this was about as soon as I saw the title! I can't believe how amazing Wood and the rest of the band were. They combined the best of all genres of rock into one. Everyone who knows of Mother Love Bone, loves this band. Can't imagine how far they would have gone if he could have recovered. Thanks for another great story to share with the masses.
Thanks Tony!
R.I.P. Andrew. Thank you for the memories.
Too many Rock Legends died much the same in the same area. Breaks my heart. 💔
What might've been. I know Wood would be in the conversation. He was that good.
TY PROFESSOR, I never knew this. SAY HELLO TO HEAVEN really spoke to my heart. And Chris Cornell is missed so much. When I hear his voice, his beautiful intense gaze comes to mind.
Very sad when we lose a talented musician to the effects of drug and alcohol addiction. This is also the day in 1997, Michael Hutchinson passed away, suspected suicide. He also struggled with addiction and depression from the head injury.
I know it. SO very sad. What amazing artists.
I was 30 feet from Chris Cornell 2 weeks before he died. Was at a show in Charlotte NC. A Great night we all had no clue was one of the last for such an inspirational man....
One of my absolute favorite videos you’ve ever done. Thank you.
Wow, thank you! More to come Mike.
The Professor NEVER disappoints. My all time favorite RUclips channel with Rick Beato being 2nd.. No other comes close to these 2.
So my cousin Suzan whom is servide by 2 beautiful children died from an over dose as well. She made me a VCR tape of all of the 90s big grunge band MTV videos. And yes I was born in 77 so I grew up in that era of music. My hair was long all through out highschool and I even grew it back out trying to get back a better place in my life I guess. But I remember the vary first time I watched it on my birthday because it was a gift for just that. At the time I didn't really 💬 about how much time and effort that she put into making it for me but it was and still is one of my most cherished things that I own. Hunger Strike was the first song on it and later when singles came out I hired Andy Wood sing Chloe Dancer Crown of Thorns and fell in love with not only with it but the whole Singles sound track why well because it had alot of what was on my tape. So I say thank you for this video and now I will go back and be a rebellious teenager and watch this compilation of great memories and music
I remember hearing hunger strike when I was in high school, but I didn't know much about Temple of the Dog or their other music. Say hello to heaven is a hauntingly beautiful song that I wish I'd known about sooner. In my opinion, Chris Cornell was not just one of the best singers of the grunge era, he was one of the best singers of all rock music, especially from the 90s to the present.
I hope you've seen Miley Cyrus nail Say Hello 2 Heaven....it blew my mind.
And he was certainly one of the best song writers. Such a loss.
This brought back all the pain I felt the first time I ever heard Say Hello 2 Heaven. Now Andy and Chris are together again. 💔
This is by far your best video on this channel. I am glad to see that Andrew Wood is finally getting the recognition that he deserves. His work with Mother Love Bone was seminal for rock music. For years, it seemed that rock got stale with bands like Warrant, Whitesnake, Winger, etc. not playing any songs of substance but MLB songs seemed to touch your soul. MLB’s sound was more LA but with a grunge because of the emotional lyrics. Like Cornell said “MLB was that bridge between LA rock and grunge and when Andy died, that bridge died.” Grunge became the dominant music in 90s rock.
The death of Andrew Wood changed the destinies of many people. Temple of the Dog album was created as a tribute to Andrew Wood, members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament formed Pearl Jam with Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron. Vedder served as the anchor pitch for “Hunger Strike,” which was a grunge masterpiece. Alice In Chains “Would?” was that bands biggest hit and it was dedicated to Andrew Wood and “Far Behind” by Candlebox was dedicated to Andy’s memory.
In my opinion, rock would be different if Andy would have survived and conquered his heroin addiction. None of those chains of events would not have happened without him dying. If you are going to have a debate on which single person had the most impact on rock and roll in the 90s, it would be Andrew Wood, no contest. Thank you for not only covering “Say Hello to Heaven,” which is such a beautiful and cathartic song but for telling the perils of heroin addiction with objectivity. You have earned yourself a new subscriber to your channel. Like with the “Chloe Dancer, Crown of Thorns,” we all have a little bit of “Mr. Faded Glory” in all of us. Please do a deeper dive into that song. It deserves it and it is a top ten for me too.
It really makes you wonder: If Andy had lived, would we have ever heard of Eddie Vedder? The stars aligned just right to have Eddie join up with Stone, et al., but losing Andrew Wood was a high price to pay to get there. Yet I wouldn't want to have never heard Eddie sing either.
Andrew was a beautiful soul. I love what he left behind for us. It hurts to think what more he could have been. If he had shaken that monkey. He's be one of the greats.
I'm 46 so your content gives me precious memories
We're the same age!
@@ProfessorofRock yes. I played Atari on an old black and white TV my parents got for me at a garage sale. Everyone else had a Nintendo a year before I did
I remember sneaking out of my house to meet my Older friend (back in 1988) to drive to Seattle to witness the awesomeness of my SEATTLE MUSIC Evolve!
I don't remember the names of the Bands, but MAN What a time we had.
"He came from an island...then he died from the street".....RIP Landrew The Love Child
And he hurt so bad like a soul breaking, but he never said nothing to me.
I was never huge into the Seattle scene myself, but I loved Chris Cornell's music and bought the Temple of the Dog album when I was in high school.
I knew the basic story about Andy Wood and the song Say Hello to Heaven still makes me cry and my gut to clench to this day. I dedicated it to a friend of mine in London who passed away after complications from a double lung transplant in 2005. His dad even put it on his online memorial page at my request.
Well Professor, this….in my mind probably was your best. I’m an oldy and could remember my kids listening to STP, Janes Addiction, but this….this Professor drew me in. I was spellbound on every word. You spoke in such great respect, I know this story must have been close to your heart. I forwarded in to my son and daughter, I know this will impact them as well. Thanks for showing me this era of music that I’m going to dig into now. Thanks 🙏🏼
God bless you and yours. If you ever want/need any suggestions or advice in that journey, dont hesitate to hit me up here.
It was the rebirth of rock and roll to me.
I'm really gratified by your tribute to Landrew. I would have never guessed that Crown of Thorns was one of your favorite songs. I'd have to say, even all these years later, Temple is still my all time favorite album. I was going through a tragedy of my own making back in those days, and that album was rare and much needed shelter for me. I learned how to sing, listening to Temple, and though I can't hold a candle to Chris or Andy, I can never thank them enough for bringing so much meaning and inspiration to my little life. R.I.P. Brothers.
Such an exciting time to live in Seattle. We had and lost so many greats. Chris and Temple of the Dog will always be my absolute fave of the time.
YES!!!!! LANDREW! The video for the song Hunger Strike was shot in Discovery Park in Seattle. The western view at sunset with band members' backs to the camera facing Bainbridge Island, home of Andrew Wood, was a symbolic goodbye to their friend.
This was really moving. While I'm familiar with Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog, I was unaware of the story that connected those bands to each other and to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Great, sad story, my friend.
There is a connection between most of the grunge scene...Seattle's music scene was pretty small. Check out bands like Mad Season, Brad, Satchel, and Malfunkshun to round out that scene even more.
The MALFUNKSHUN Return To Olympus record is fantastic. His brother Kevin said it best, “Andy was a muse.”
OMG I look very much forward to a video on Chloe Dancer/ Crown of Thorns -- Especially if you can get some time with Stone and even Jeff on it. That would be a wonderful day for me.
Long Live Andrew Wood!
Ahh, I’ve been listening to a LOT of both Andy and Chris’ incredible music lately. Love and miss them both. 😢💔 Especially mournful of Andy as he had SO much more to give to himself and the world!! Yes Professor, legends is exactly how I’d describe them.
I was in on Seattle sound early in 89/90. Soundgarden was my band. I got temple of the dog the week it originally dropped and loved it as a complimentary piece of work from so many musicians. When tragedy struck in my own life later that year and I lost two freinds in the same car accident say hello to heaven was burned in to my soul. When my first born daughter passed away many years later it burned itself in again. It’s not a happy song but it is an emotional song and it is an amazing piece of art.
And Chris, “no one sings like you anymore”
Andy was one of my favorite artists. I often wonder what might have been, if he'd not left us so soon. My favorite MLB song is Stargazer, but I do love Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns. The entire album of Apple is just amazing. Malfunkshun also had some really good songs. Jezebel Woman, My only Fan, Until the Ocean... Just really good stuff, and you could clearly see a diamond in the rough. Andy truly was the man of golden words.
Professor, I remember having played "Say hello 2 Heaven" on the weekly show that I did on my college's radio station. This was back in the 90s when the song was still relatively fresh. I'd borrowed the cassette from a friend who was a fixture in that studio, lol. Music is such a guiding light to kids figuring out their way in the world. BTW, YT tells me that mine was this upload's 999th Like.
I was 18 in 1991 when the paradigm shift happened from LA to Seattle. To say the Seattle scene was the most important music happening for me is an understatement. I still listen to all the bands from this era, so it's not like I'm remembering it. I didn't learn anything new per see, but I was drawn in and happy you covered the story. As an aside, I have ran into Andrew's nephew on youtube in some comments somewhere years ago. He looks so much like Andy it's uncanny.
Andy was gone before I had heard any of the Seattle bands of this era, but Chris and Laynes passing were both the most difficult celebrity deaths by far for me to process. I wish they got more recognition for how important they are to the history of rock and roll and music in general. There is little doubt Andy wouldn't be in that conversation also.
I knew about this story but I never “knew” the whole story. You outdid yourself this time. Such a gift for storytelling
It’s such an amazing thing to know how much this music impact so many of our lives.
You’re absolutely right. It’s a beautiful song and Chris delivered it in true Cornell fashion and soul.
We covered this song as a tribute to Chris when he passed during one of our shows. It was apparent how much Andy and Chris were loved.
Awesome!
I can remember playing Temple of the Dog when I was a DJ on my college radio station in 1991 & ‘92… great music, great lyrics, incredible voices… part of my college soundtrack with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc.
