This song, as the whole of Gist Is, will remain one of my favorite musical secrets that I can keep to myself forever. I want to tell the world, but the world doesn't deserve it.
Damn it. Still some of the most original music I've heard come out of the Indie scene. So soul-full and full of depth and truly humanistic longing. The whole album nearly all the way through is just beautiful in its movement.
these guys are musical geniuses. so underrated. this music fills my soul with something it's been longing for. it describes emotions i could never put into words... maybe even emotions that hadn't even consciously surfaced.
this video is underrated; everyone wants to talk about their sound and similarity to x but as far as music videos go this is a hella atmospheric and visually consistent one. adult jazz has been killing it for years.
A foolish bathe, a foolish bathe Did I did I did I did I did I did I, did a foolish bathe? My sugar veins, my sugar veins Did I did I did I did I did I did I, did my sugar veins? The foolish bathe? The foolish bathe? Did I did I did I did I did I did I, did the foolish bathe? My sugar veins, my sugar veins My my my my my my my sugar veins Right eye honour, coat of armour And I’m proud With my left eye Dreams are leadlike And I’m down Still a lover, but no further Than the borders Still all over, but for sugar In my veins I was too busy pacing Now what did I say? [x2] So let us joy up and be springful Your provision is more than a mouthful So let us joy up and be praiseful Your provision is more than a faceful Right eye honour, coat of armour And I’m proud With my left eye Dreams are leadlike And I’m down Still a lover, but no further Than the borders Still all over, but for sugar In my veins So let us joy up and be thankful Your provision is more than a handful Houdini never knew how he did it Broke the tomb and he hammered the death knell
This is beauty. My house help requested I play this song again cuz she liked it! Doesn't understand a word of English and normally doesn't like any English songs I play. But you guys ❤
Their bluesy, a cappella style crooning mixed with falsetto vocal harmonies and experimental melodies make them beautifully strange. (dropped @ www.trackdrops.com)
The album in general revolves around internal conflict between the ‘protagonist’s’ faith and place in the church vs his identity as a gay man. Most of the songs I would say revolve around this - though others more generally are about sexual identity and gender. This song seems like the former to me, lyrics like “with my right eye/ coat of armour/ and I’m proud/ with my left eye/ dreams are leadlike/ and I’m down” set up this dichotomy of being a proud member of the church (the lead singer lead a youth group at one point) and being a gay man with aspirations of love etc). The conflict ends up becoming a question of faith itself. That if god is real then he would be unquestioning and commit himself to god, but if not then he ought to live out his life as a gay man. Hence “Houdini never knew how he did it/ escaped the tomb and he hammered the death knell” which describes the perplexing miracle of Jesus’ resurrection - that the greatest escape artist couldn’t figure out how Jesus could move the rock that sealed his tomb only furthers the confusion that the protagonist feels about the authenticity of his faith.
Why would posting on youtube have anything to do with carrying what "other people think about me"? I have literally less respect for the opinions of youtube commenters than any other demographic in the world. It's not hard to be motivated to write every day when there are bands as shitty as Alt-J out there. Anytime anybody tries to take the "you wrote too much" angle I all it really says to me is that you're kind of dumb and you're confused and upset by people who don't find writing to be a difficult time-consuming task.
Olli J Bleehhh I had a huge argument on reddit about this. It's a frustrating band, because if you haven't been following indie rock closely it's harder to get across why they're so hacky. To describe their main crime, simply that, hackiness, multidimensional unoriginality would be the best way to put it. But they're also kind of one of these bands that pulls a muscle on every song attempting to have an intellectual "complex" sound, which is really just layering competing diatonic patterns in a way that is more arbitrary than it seems to a casual listener, and borrowing miscellaneous sonic flourishes from other bands. They like to have a topical theme or concept which will seem profound or humanistic if the song is cited or listed in a magazine (or considered for the Mercury, natch), but doesn't really do anything to educate or create empathy or move the listener or even enrich the lyrical content, just perhaps appeal to a judge or a professor or other imperious and dismissive listener who doesn't really really have time for music but if they do check out a band, wants it to be a "serious" band with "serious" songs. They're pretentious. I know people love to turn that one back around on me because I like big words and proclaiming judgment, but that's only really an appropriate use if you can prove that my reasoning is somehow specious or put-on (spoiler alert...don't waste your time). People would probably think Adult Jazz is pretentious too, but they just...have so much more backbone. Their harmonies are novel, their approach is novel. It's part of a tradition, but their contribution to that tradition is discernibly valuable, expressive and individual. Sometimes admittedly, we're dealing with the nearly ineffable, explaining some of these dynamics would be almost impossible, but hearing them is inevitable for hardcore fans. Alt-J are indie rock for people who don't like indie rock, and their fans are the kind of people who have them sandwiched between Robin Thicke and Imagine Dragons which I'm sorry, is simply not a coincidence. And it's not the least (or the greatest) of their crimes to have overshadowed and outsold all their vastly superior influences several times over. But they have. The vocals are affected, but not just affected, the affectation is not theirs, it's appropriated from bands that do it better and did it first. The sound of the band in general is very trendy and if you were swimming in the current of this music when they debuted, it's the kind of thing your ears simply taste the minute you heard the band. The clean guitar arpeggios, the self-consciously "different" percussive underpinnings, the way the vocals lilt and hover....I can cite one band in particular, the Local Natives, as having done it first and done it better, but there are *so many* more. They're a band for people who like Muse. Which is not a good thing. They're a band for people who don't like good music, they like "good" music. Music made by people who desperately want to give you the impression that they are a great band, an important band or a virtuosic band without actually bringing anything original or inspiring to the table. They're also kind of like Muse in that they stole the other half of Radiohead's sound. Muse attempted to mimic the grandiosity, the darkly soaring vocals, the brainy-stadium-rock thing, and Alt-J want the "studious, textured, music majory" thing. I simply don't buy it, from either of them, and I hate to point this out, but if you read reviews from truly respectable sources, I'm very far from alone on this. The arrangements are sometimes baroque, but ultimately bland and mediocre because there's no pain, no soul, no groove, just competence and elaboration without any heart behind it. There's a lot of syncopation, but there's no *talent* for syncopation. There are lots of synths and curlicues and spidery guitar figures, but they wander, and if they do find a trajectory usually they trace out melodies that aren't just very overused (as most any agreeable melody could be said to be overused by the year 2015) but very trendy and *contemporarily* overused, which is even more suspect for obvious reasons. Alt-J reminds me of the recent trend of "funny" commercials, delivered in the deadpan style of The Office or other hip TV comedies. How do you explain exactly what it is that makes these commercials terrible to somebody who only really watches football? It would be difficult, wouldn't it? It's subtle. Alt-J want to be a great band, they are *"ambitious"* and use the language of big ideas and emotions, but they have an overwhelming sense of cold, lifeless calculation to their music, and a profound lack of soul. The appropriation of hip-hop culture in their videos is rather offensive and inane and pointless and really just kind of ultimately shady and irritating to me, but that's not really germane. This is a band that sounds like a more polished, more glassy, more bombastic, more luxuriantly produced and attention-grabbing version of far, far better bands that their fans would turn their noses up at. Bands with so much more reason to root for them. They're kind of like a commercial indie-rock group recruited based on grades and appearances from some overpriced music school, manufactured by an alternate dimension hipster version of Simon Cowell. If you're not a big indie rock fan, if you're not the kind of person who's been listening to every renowned album to come out for the past ten years or so, it might be hard for you to accept these things. This is why these conversations become frustrating. If there wasn't such a disconnect, I wouldn't have to explain anything in the first place, and since you're undoubtedly not going to approach my reply with the same enthusiasm my lonely grandmother begins a new Stephen King book, it's not all that likely that our two viewpoints will suddenly be reconciled. But that was trying.

I wonder what the lyrics means

This is more interesting and unique than Alt-J by a damn sight. More of the line that includes the true homeboys like Dirty Projectors.

Finn Bumm wow, burned. I take it all back, I had no idea Alt-J fans were so clever. They must be the right ones.
Finn Bumm I have a computer at work scooter. Certain people entertain themselves in certain ways.
I would like to hear the actual reasons for why you dont like alt-j, I'm interested. Maybe like three paragraphs though not ten.
