I've spent the whole of the lockdown fixing and building retro 8 bit's. I now have a working PET 3032 (which was a basket case) a BBC B with 2nd processor a duel booting Spectrum, duel booting ZX81 (32K ram Basic and Forth) Oric 1 and Atmos (Both needed new ram). I also built a Grant Searle inspited Z80 CP/M machine (like the RC2014) which lead me down a rabbit hole of nostalgia (Old Byte magazines are works of art). I don't think i want to go back to work.
I'm dying for an electronics or retrocomputing guru on RUclips to design a new board that has both a Z80 and a 6502, the two best loved CPUs from the 8-bit era.
Yes, but you realize getting both working together as VPUs is nearly impossible. The DEC Rainbow 100 had both a Z80 for C/PM and an 8088 for DOS (not fully MS-DOS compatible) and could be set up as a VT100 terminal. Plus, in a metal shell that could withstand a nuclear blast!
Mathew, have you looked at the "The Purple Monster" is an Amiga 500 ++ system board that you can solder up. Why do you pronounce the Z in ZX as zed and the zin Z80 as zee? In the UK, they would pronounce both as zed, even though the Z80 was an American CPU because they just pronounce it their native dialect. It's not disrespectful or incorrect to use your native dialect.
I do it that way, because zee x spectrum just sounds wrong. Whereas I think z80 sounds fine either way but I am an American so as I do most times it comes up I use zee.
"Zed" makes sense because its branding. That was a British brand. "Zee 80" and "Zed 80" are semi-technical jargon, old nicknames for the "Zilog 80". Also Zed X Spectrum was sold as the Timex-Sinclair in the US, it makes some sense to indicate its "Britishness", since the new RC2014 is also British. 68000 and it decendants were called 68k, again more of an informal name, I'd pronounce "sixty-eight kay", but I'd imagine others might call it "six, eight, kay", because its not a brand.
@@squirlmy By the same logic, the "zee" 80 is be branding for an American brand. And it isn't jargon for Zilog 80 as it' the Zilog Z80 - it's printed on the chip. Zilog is the manufacturer/brand and Z80 is the product/model,, just as Sinclair is the the manufacturer and Spectrum ZX is the model. Look, I'm not trying to be the word police here, I just find it odd that some Americans go out of their way to pronounce a letter in a different way for reasons, especially since the Brits (rightly) don't.
@@rager-69 That's purely a matter of habit and timing. The Z80 was used outside of North America long before anyone in North America was aware of the original non-Timex branding for Sinclair's machines. There was literally nobody to say "Zee 80", so "Zed 80" is what stuck outside of NA. It's hard to break a decades old habit. Zilog themselves don't appear to ever have had a preference, whereas Sinclair did, and their machines became better known in NA from the European scene rather than independently as happened to the Z80.
The big problem is that lead in solder wasn't polluting except in the most extreme cases. As long as its a solid. I suppose if workers are soldering all day every day- well, actually I'm not so sure even then. People just get warm fuzzies for being "leads free", I'm not sure it actually lowers pollution exposure in any meaningful way.

Part #2: EPROM socket is soldered wrong way. Notch on the chip and pcb does not match notch on a socket ;)

Ugh lead free rubbish. That stuff is horrible in my experience. Love my kester leaded. I find lead free is a pain to desolder.
