About The Alienist:
The Alienist is an upcoming American drama television series based on the novel of same name by Caleb Carr. The psychological thriller drama is set in 1896, when a series of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes has gripped the city. Newly appointed top cop Teddy Roosevelt calls upon Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a criminal psychologist -- aka alienist -- and newspaper illustrator John Moore to conduct the investigation in secret. Joining them in the probe is Sara Howard, a headstrong secretary at Police Headquarters.

Bruhls performance was perfect. You're not supposed to like Kreizler; he's meant to be a benevolent psychopath. That said he is a very difficult character to play.

Important note: corsets should not be tight-laced. Tight-laced was never the norm and the few crazed women who did tight-lace were often publicly denounced for that. The idea the corset being uncomfortable is a modern myth; in actually, it was just a mix between a belt and a bra.

Ok, to kvetch a bit from a historical point of view - to me, it seems like everyone’s teeth are way too straight and white, and their hair is never greasy. Also, I’m not sure that women of Sarah’s class would pluck their brows (check out photos of Counselo Vanderbilt). Finally, the white collars and cuffs seem far too pristine. Yes, these items would have been laundered regularly, but handwashing with the soap of the period would not produce that a brilliant white.

Honestly I love all the cast for different reasons
Sara is a headstrong, intelligent and fiercely independent woman with her demons. However she rises above them and never falters, so her weakness is never used against her. Trying to make her way in a still sexist era. While dealing with her respect for Laszlo and her feelings for John.
Honestly power lesbian energy for me. Or a bisexual who prefers women.
John is a tragic character, he’s too kind and at times that causes people to take advantage of him. A deeply empathetic man who is often blinded and naive due to his rose coloured view of the world.
He deeply loves Sara but is conflicted of his fatherly role in her life but also his romantic feelings for her. Trying to be a good man and yet broken from his past. Awkward chaotic bisexual energy
Laszlo is by far the most complicated of the three. He’s manipulative, he’s intelligent, at times he’s a sociopath. But at the same time his hyper aware and particular about whom he trusts and allows affection towards. Such as Mary and John. He does have a tender affection for John as well as respect, but they clash too much. His crippled arm and past cause him to isolate himself from others while remaining independent like Sara. He’s naive to social aspects of intimacy and emotion, but from a scientific and psychological aspect he’s a genius.
