      Great question. The plug-in-hybrids sit on different suspension to the combustion models - this is to compensate for the additional weight (305 kg/672lbs) of the hybrid system compared to a CLA 200. The suspension is raised by around 10 mm. To my senses, the plug-in-hybrids in the compact range have an ever so slightly softer ride too.

    Well detailed and enjoyable video on a very good and extremely enjoyable car! I'm really looking forward to the next three years with it as my personal and company car. Thus far the only complaint I have had regarding the car is the manufacturing fault of rattling door panels, which are being fixed in February. But otherwise I am finding it difficult to fault. I thought I'd find my 2017 Audi A4 difficult to beat, but this has firmly dethroned is as being just as comfortable but more enjoyable to drive, more eco-friendly, and just as practical weirdly enough.

      Thank you, that's really interesting to know. The CLA in this generation is actually pitched to compete against models like the A4, 4-Series Gran Coupe and even our own C-Class. The boot size is what tends to surprise people most. I'm glad you're enjoying your new CLA!

    This is not a good car. I have it and that's why I say. The reasons (1) it is a horrible car if you dry on fuel and not battery. (2) the automatic transmission is pathetic.

    9:17 you mentioned in D - - the car will slow down more than normal when you take your foot off the accelerator and essentially, you could drive with one pedal. Would that mean the brake lights won't show or is there a system in place for the car to turn it on itself?

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад +7

      Great question - it depends on how much the car is slowing down by. When in D -, D - - and sometimes in D AUTO the brake lights will show when decelerating. Think of it this way - if the car is decelerating as much as if the brakes themselves were being operated the brake lights will show. Under lower levels of regeneration the car will decide whether to switch on the lights or not depending on the rate of deceleration.

    Had one of these as a courtesy car last week whilst my e250 was in for service. Technological marvel but I hated it. Braking system is dreadful, all the usual feel of progressive braking is removed presumably due to braking system assisting with the recharge; its a horrible feel. There are lots of positives to this car but it was a relief to get in my ancient 2.1 twin turbo diesel that is so much nicer to drive.

    • @LandLAutomotive

      The 2.1 twin turbo is one brilliant engine. The braking does take a little bit of getting used to - gentle with initial application before pushing further on the pedal seems to get it to stop smoothly from my experience.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! With a recent motorway trip in an A 250 e just using the engine at high speeds and using the battery for town and acceleration my fuel consumption was between 4.5 and 5 L/100 km. Of course this will vary depending on your cruising speed but the car can be set to a drive mode (Battery Level/BL) that preserves the battery charge level for when you need to use it.

    When it eventually runs out of electricity what does the car consumption drop to per mpg?

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  2 года назад

      Great question - running on the engine alone you should be looking at 40 - 46 mpg combined. Having driven the CLA and A 250 e with minimal charge quite a few times this is an accurate figure, even on longer motorway runs. If the battery reaches 0% charge the car is still able to coast with the engine off.

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад

      The car will use electric drive as much as it can - the engine will only fire up under heavy acceleration, when the battery is drained or when the car is placed into Sport or Battery Level drive modes. With your driving profile the engine may not be started very often at all!

    On a long road trip, what is the most economical way to get the best average? ECO, or Confort? When to use the battery level? Regards from Portugal!

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад +1

      Great question - it all depends on how you use the car and what your route profile is. The drive modes Comfort, Eco and Electric work great around town with Battery Level being especially helpful on motorways to preserve the charge until you want to use it.
      I recently had an A 250 e for a few days and put this to the test. My route profile is 64km with 90% motorway with the rest being lower speed and villages. For the low speed sections and accelerating up to motorway speeds I used the electric drive setting and cruising on the motorway used the Battery Level and Sport drive modes to drive using the engine. From memory, my fuel consumption with the engine was somewhere between 5 and 6 L/100km.
      In short, around town for maximum efficiency it is best to use the battery as much as possible and out of town use the engine whilst cruising at high speeds before switching back to the battery at lower speeds.

    Does the large price difference justify the CLA compared to the "A" class hatchback? After all, it's the same car inside and the same engine.

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад

      Great question - I would say so. The differences are in how the car is set up, levels of refinement and which styling you prefer. The CLA is easily the best handling compact model in my opinion - the car is 5cm wider than the A-Class so cornering is improved. The steering feels a tiny bit more direct to my senses and the CLA is very keen to turn into sharp corners.
      The other difference is within the cabin - if not in the design but in the refinement. The A-Class is a well refined place to be but the CLA is even quieter at high speeds from my experience. The A-Class hatchback and saloon have more headroom for rear passengers than the CLA Coupe but the CLA has a slightly wider cabin overall.
      In terms of looks, I have a very big soft spot for the shooting brake - especially in Digital white metallic paint.

      Great question - think about your typical driving profile, how many miles you do per day and where the nearest public charging station is. If your journeys tend to be pretty short then the battery may not need to be charged every night. Can't believe how they could make such a small battery for the C350e with only 7-12 real world miles compared to this much bigger battery in a "lower class" CLA...

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад

      The C350e was fitted with a 6.2 kWh battery when it was released in 2015. This doubled when the second generation plug-in-hybrid system found its way into the C300e and C300de in 2019. New models now benefit from the third generation of plug-in-hybrid systems which offer greater energy densities and electric motors which are both more powerful and more efficient. It's pretty amazing how far the technology has come in just a few years.

    • @LandLAutomotive

      The two main things that will affect the range projection are temperature and average energy consumption. In winter it is normal for range to drop as lithium-ion batteries have an optimum operating temperature somewhere between 18 and 25 degrees. Secondly, the car will use the average energy consumption to give an estimate for how far the battery can take you - if the battery is mostly used on higher speed roads where the electrical consumption is higher then this would definitely be a factor into the range projection.
      A couple of things that can help are resetting the trip computer to force the car to recalculate everything based on your current driving profile and using pre-entry climate control before your journeys if the car is plugged in to a charger. As well as getting the cabin to the right temperature before you set off, this feature gets energy flowing through the battery and gets it to its ideal operating temperature. This means the car can use more energy for driving and less on getting everything up to temperature on the move which should boost your range. I've seen the range go up on hybrids and fully electric models by doing this when the car is plugged in - even after letting the cars charge to 100% before activating pre-entry climate control through Mercedes me.
      Finally, the car doesn't seem to factor in regenerative braking into its initial estimate so keep this in mind - with energy recovery and coasting, not every mile driven necessarily means a mile's worth of energy is used. Take a look at the ECO display to see your "mileage bonus" from coasting and regenerative braking at the end of a trip.
      Give it a go and let us know how you get on! If the range still continues to drop then I'd recommend getting the car booked in to have the battery checked out.

    Will this car recharge the battery on the motorway, like the 330e ? For example if you deplete the power in the battery’s and then have a stint on the motorway during that journey will the battery’s recharge?

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад +1

      The car will automatically divert power from the engine to recharge the battery when it is depleted. It will also use regenerative braking to keep feeding power back into the battery. There is a drive setting called Battery Level which is designed for longer drives with motorway sections. This will run the car on the engine and either keep the battery at 100% or work to bring it back up to 100%. This is a great setting to use if you are driving between cities - using the petrol engine along the motorway and having the battery available for when you arrive in the city.

PHEV is literally the only option on my company car scheme now, they've done away with anything that isn't PHEV or fully electric. I live in London with no off-road parking, so realistically if I go for a PHEV I will pretty much never charge it. To me it'll run off petrol, it's just the only practical option available. With that in mind, what would the experience of having this car without ever charging it be like? Would all the extra weight of the battery mean it ends up just feeling sluggish when there's never any juice in the battery? Thanks!

      @Clown90125 6 месяцев назад

      You probably have decided already as your question is 7 months old but I would definitely not go for a PHEV in your circumstances. Depends what mileage you do or what your commute is. Fully electric cars can do 250-300 miles on a single charge so if your mileage isn’t excessive you could end up only having to charge the car every week or say even two weeks. Just drive to a fast charging point and charge it up in two hours. Running a PHEV with a flat battery is a crazy idea. The battery is never really flat though as there is a reserve which is used to run in tandem with the petrol engine. These PHEVs never run in 100% engine mode. I hope you haven’t chosen the hybrid - terrible idea !

      @Clown90125 6 месяцев назад

      Another thing I’ll add. I had an A250e (PHEV) courtesy car when my car was in for service. They hadn’t bothered to charge the battery so the engine felt coarse and unrefined. I asked them if I could test it another day with full battery and it was a different car ! Very quick and refined.

      Engines can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to research, develop and homologate so shared development is commonplace across the industry. The M282 1.3 litre turbocharged engine - which features under the bonnet of the CLA 250 e - was developed alongside the Renault H5Ht and Nissan HR13DDT. For anyone looking to order or ordered over past year. I'm personally really disappointed with this car. I ordered the premium plus which is pretty much top spec other than a few minor packs available. Its turned up with no electric seats which is embarrassing and no assisted boot button which considering how heavy the boot is and clearly weighted for assistance makes using the boot extremely awkward for a company car that's boot is used daily. First experience of the infamous Mercedes service. Next four years will be miserable. I don't believe it's chip shortage. Colleagues BMW supplied complete, colleagues Mini Cooper turned up complete, colleagues Tesla turned up complete... And drives itself... I mean ffs how many chips does it take for a car to drive itself and I'm sat here shuffling my arse like a dog wiping it's bum on the carpet to move my seat and hanging of my boot like a chimp to close it! Joke!

      @@theessexdon the gear shifts in comfort, eco and battery level are diabolical. That’s not down to the engine, that’s down to the gear box and lack of a DSG. Across their whole range (GLA, GLC, GLE AND A classes) everybody complains about the laggy gear change.
      I got the Phev. I don’t have to deal with the engine as much, but when I do, I have it in sports mode, which burns a lot of petrol 🥺.
      In my opinion, if you can afford it, get the plug in version, you get up to 44 miles on 1 charge. More realistically, the way I drive erratically sometimes, I got around 30-35.
      I bought the car in February, and I’ve only filled it up 6 times, and that was for trips to the midlands from Essex.
      Rear wheel drive is electric, incredible torque, not to mention the amount of gears on that train.
      The normal CLA is a front wheel drive,. Front wheel drive with no DSG is not an enjoyable drive, it’s incredibly laggy.
      Whatever you do, don’t buy a KIA 😂. If you can get the charging infrastructure, you will have serious amounts of money… I know I have.

      Ambient temperature can affect battery capacity - it is not uncommon for range to drop in the depths of winter. Something you can do to help mitigate this is to use pre-entry climate control: firing up the air conditioning when the car is plugged in means the cabin will be at the right temperature for when you start your journey so the air conditioning will not have to work quite so hard when you are on the move. When plugged in the car will draw any power it uses from the external power source and this energy flow will start to get the battery up to its optimum operating temperature before you start to drive.
      Because of the way the car uses regenerative braking not every mile driven is a mile's worth of energy used - at the end of your journey check the ECO display on the instrument cluster. The mileage "bonus" will show you how many miles worth of energy you've recovered on your trip.

      @@LandLAutomotive Thanks for that, I had a quick look but hadn't noticed that video. Do the batteries impact on the bootspace at all? Thanks for your help!

    • @LandLAutomotive
      @LandLAutomotive  3 года назад +1

      @@jammasterquo Great question - there's been a lot of engineering that's gone into the compact models to fit everything in. The battery pack is within the chassis; the fuel tank and exhaust have been repositioned too. The boot floor has been raised a touch - the false floor sits just over 4cm (or one tie clip) higher than in a non-hybrid model.
      Rather than having a ridge in the boot floor the entire load space is flat and there is a bit of underfloor storage space near the boot opening.
      Boot depth and width has not changed though - there should be plenty of room for a large pram to fit diagonally in the load space.
