What a gorgeous long-haired dachshund! And he is so well-trained and patient. Your video has helped me learn to groom my long-haired dachshund the right way.
Thank-you so much for this video! I have two longhaired doxies, and this video convinced me to get a good pair of thinning shears and clean up the hair that grows between the ears and neck ridge that has always been a matting problem.
I have four dachshunds, three are long hair and none of them have the same kind of hair.and not a single one of them would ever tolerate me manipulating them like that dog is.
I agree. The breeder of my dachshund told me that as long as they are brushed and combed correctly, there is no reason for an owner to cut any hair on a long-hair. This video, of course, is for an AKC show dog standard grooming for the breed. My pup would never tolerate this either. These show dog owners/handlers are amazing with their training for submissive grooming.
It's a matter of teaching them. My longhair is from the same kennel as Charles (in the video). It took training -- and treats -- to persuade him to stand still on the table. He's not quite as mellow as Charles about his grooming, but if you make it an opportunity to be with you and to be loved, they'll master it quickly. My boy's predecessors were not show dogs, but I did teach them to stand for grooming.
ive only had one dachshund short hair red you train them as puppies my baby Dixie died in January and then 7 months latter my moms Yorke died both this year
What a gorgeous dog! And the best instructional video I've seen. Can you say what products you use for shampoo and conditioner for such beautiful shiny coats?
Looks a bit like mine, although mine has more black streaks in his coat. I wouldn't groom mine like you because I wouldn't use the loop around the neck - they have fragile backs, so you have to be careful. One thing, keeping a Dachshund in this condition is hard work, and they would need this every week. When they do look as good as this, there aren't many dogs that look as good. Mine is a real head-turner, and I often show him at dog events. If you are thinking of owning one just remember their backs, so don't let them jump about, or jump on and off couches, or beds. They like to do their own thing, and can often seem disobedient, but they like freedom and to do what they like. They are brave dogs, and stick up for their owners - they face off against much bigger dogs, and often show no fear.
I have a mix between a short hair and long hair dauschund. His elbow area gets quit fluffy, what would you recommend as far as controlling that? I love how you clean up the paws, my poor guy has what I call who feet atm. I love this video and am confident in doing this myself vs. the choppy job I get at the groomers.
My breeder recommended stripping my male's coat because it is overgrown and getting curly/wavy. How should I strip his coat? I've watched some videos but they are all for sure costed dogs. I don't want to damage his coat. Thanks
Depending on the type of coat, the technique varies. Just remember, the hair will always grow back and the only way to get better at getting the "look" you want is to practice! With an "overgrown" coat, I would start with a grooming rake and slicker brush to remove the under coat. The soft fluffy stuff. You want to try and avoid breaking the top coat, but it will happen as you learn and that is ok. As I said, it will grow back. You don't have to do it all at once. Start on one side and work your way through the entire dog over the course of a few days. Do as much a day as you and your male are comfortable with. Hope this helps!
I did not see mention of changing from one type of thinning shears to the other. What is the objective of having the two blade lengths and the different number of teeth?
aww my Dixie she was a short hair dachshund same color she died January 29 2020 i miss my baby now i got a standard poodle i have a very soft spot in my heart for dachshund and poodles id get another dachshund but my poodle is 10 months now id be afraid she be to rough
Anyone who thinks this is rough, needs to watch "How to groom a longhaired dachshund Chester." That groomer should be reported to animal cruelty. She hits the dog with the wire brush each time she brushes and he is crying in pain until she muzzles him. She must be the owner of the dog or the owner would surely report her.
What do you/the owners do to keep his coat so silky? My shaded creams coat is long but a little thin and more fluffy/poofy along her legs and chest. It almost looks frazzled or damaged. Her coat mats and gets static easily around her ears. We feed her high quality food! We're not supplementing with omegas yet. Can you recommend any products?
Mine, too, has not quite so long or silky hair. She looks more like an Australian Shepard, white, black, grey, and red. I am just now beginning to groom her. She will be 13 next month! I wish that I could find a good groomer in BOston
I had never groomed Ursula for nearly 13 years. Her fluffly coat became too much.. She looked fat, so I began thinning her coat along her shoulders and backside. She looks like a puppy again! Thinning shears are all I used.
Having an English Crème Dachshund I thought maybe I'd try grooming him. After watching a professional as yourself, perhaps I'll have to put up with poor quality groomers locally because I see there's so much skill involved I could never do him justice. .
Practice makes perfect. The breeder I got my dachies from showed me how to do it. I went to a few shows with her and got more tips. Give it a go...every time it gets better. The best tip ever is getting good quality shears. Mine is middle priced, now blunt and it takes me forever to do my dachies. Time for shopping!!
i think that thing around his throat was too tight, thats all i worried about, and how the doggie was feeling,i know I'm weird right? i bet it does hurt with those clippers around the ears,i know mine would lol
Nothing against the grooming / showing world , and this dog looks brilliant , but he looked better in the before photo IMO! The world of dog grooming goes for the look of a woman who spent wayyyyy too much time blow drying and straightening....my 6 month old looks better than this at the moment and hopefully when coat gets more length I can retain the more natural contour shape with the kinks in the right places . I'm new to this world but it's just interesting to me when I honestly believe after hours of work, a lot of these dogs legitimately looked better before...
thats just about the most beautiful dog ive ever seen
juliabyers I was going to comment that he does just look magnificent
SAME!! omg. the color of its fur is so beautiful.

I really love your grooming videos...greetings from Brazil.
How to maintain a good coat?
Good food, good grooming, good genetics.
I’ve never seen a long haired dachshund this big and furry. Is it a purebred or mixed?
This is Charles! He’s a Standard Size Longhair Dachshund.
beautiful
aww my Dixie she was a short hair dachshund same color she died January 29 2020 i miss my baby now i got a standard poodle i have a very soft spot in my heart for dachshund and poodles id get another dachshund but my poodle is 10 months now id be afraid she be to rough
I got Ursula from Splendor Farms. They breed their dogs for fabulous dispositions. Ursula has been easy from the day I got her 13 years ago
Do you do this before or after the bath?
What about the tail and but?
Hello! I just wanted to know how often do you bathe your dachshund and also how often do you groom her or take her to the groomers.
thankfully, my buddy is a short-hair!
i have one like this one,but dark brown, and I'm afraid to cut him

This is heaven
Where do u get the stone?
Do you ever take fur off the back? My dog has four inch hair that makes him hot...
It's not making him hot if anything its cooling him off

What kind of shampoo and or conditioner do you use?
Pramada Kennels thanks!!!
Pramada Kennels how often do you wash your long haired Dachshund

Like my Dacshshund
Doesn’t it hurt them
Not at all, it's like cutting your own hair :)
Don't dogs need their whiskers? Why cut all of them?
