    organist: Christian Brembeck
    conductor: Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden
Watch the pre-performance rehearsal for this piece: • Video
concert in Suntory Hall, Tokyo, Japan, 3 Oct 2000
    Denn das Gesetz des Geistes,
    der da lebendig macht
    in Christo Jesu,
    hat mich frei gemacht
    von dem Gesetz
    der Sünde und des Todes.
    Trotz dem alten Drachen,
    Trotz des Todes Rachen,
    Trotz der Furcht darzu!
    Tobe, Welt, und springe,
    Ich steh hier und singe
    In gar sichrer Ruh.
    Gottes Macht hält mich in acht;
    Erd und Abgrund muss verstummen,
    Ob sie noch so brummen.
    Weicht, ihr Trauergeister,
    Denn mein Freudenmeister,
    Jesus, tritt herein.
    Denen, die Gott lieben,
    Muß auch ihr Betrüben
    Lauter Zucker sein.
Duld ich schon hier Spott und Hohn,
Dennoch bleibst du auch im Leide,
    Jesu, meine Freude.

Oh how lovely, that is the way music in church should sound. They sung it with deepest reverence...as musicians we must always strive for that!!!

"Denn das Gesetz" is one of the Motets' very highest moments (along with that gorgeous "Gute Nacht"). The Tölzers really sing it with full-on humanity. I wish a good CD recording was available in America of their take on the Motets.

That conductor, whose name escapes me right now, is well-known for his crusty manner. But he keeps the kids concentrating and often gets superb results. I suspect there is a lot of love not far beneath the surface.

I listened two decades ago and listened again now. It's still one of the most beautiful choir performance ever, together with the best performed aria ever from the Johannes Passion, Panito Iconomou's "es ist vollbracht",

His voice was exceptionally beautiful, rich, like a Spanish port wine, and because of its richness, he was usually to be found in the mezzo-soprano sections although his range was wide open to go as high as the music demanded.

Considering their young age, they're astonishing. I really, really, really love Bach's motets. They make a light shine on me. For those who're looking for definitive versions, I recommend Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale of Gent.

It is interesting, but the difference between a boy's soprano voice and a woman's soprano (or alto, for that matter), is very apparent.

@starbreez3 mistakes, maybe. Such comment betrayeth blindness to the paradox which is the treble. Light and high tones are associated with the feminine; but there is nothing feminine about the boy's voice. It is weak, and yet at the same time strong; imperfect, and yet perfect. Had the boys made no mistakes, then neither would they have been boys. As it is, their standard is, as thou hast said thyself, awesome.

though this is a positive comment....
i have to tell you that if you think baroque music lacks of sensibility, It also means you have no sensibility at all.
