I Tried Selling Digital Prints on Etsy for a Few Months

- Selling digital prints on Etsy is still a fairly new side hustle, but a very lucrative one at that - at least it seems to be. I've been selling digital prints for a few months now, so let's talk about my results.
Great video, you are honest, no nonsense and straight to the point. I will say, that a big reason why you didn't sell much is probably because of the product themselves. You need to find digital products that people actually look for a lot. Most of the stuff in your shop are photos and canva elements that most people could easily get for free.
Hey, thank you for the honest feedback! This was a very early video of mine, so I wasn't as focused on Etsy as I probably should've been. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though!
Thank you for being HONEST. It's not passive or easy doing printable art. Everyone is doing it now so it's hard to stand out. You need a good eye and talent plus it takes a lot of time and effort.
No problem, Ray! Honesty is important to me.
No offence, but I'm not surprised you're barely selling anything on Etsy. You're just sourcing images from elsewhere (not even interesting images at that), and trying to sell them. Why would anyone want to buy what you're putting on Etsy?? But what about proper artists, people who are creating their OWN images... good quality art work... and trying to sell THAT on Etsy??? How lucrative would THAT be? That's what I want to know.
Etsy is a VERY small side hustle for me. It was purely experimental. And it’s got nothing to do with eBay. Everything I sell on eBay is inventory I source myself. Perhaps I’ll revisit Etsy at some point, but for now, it’s simply not a focus of mine.
I’m making more than 1500 a month just off 4-5 flyer designs. It’s definitely worth it if you got time and do the RIGHT research. I love your setup to how you do your content by the way, definitely recommend this channel for any graphic design or media savy folks 🔥
Exactly if you are very creative then it can be a great side hustle or even a full time gig! It’s all about what people are searching for and find interesting!
None of that makes a difference lol I can draw a stick man and post it. That’s my own art. Doesn’t mean it’s gonna sell lol
@@vcmedia1895 Congrats on your success! That's seriously awesome. And thank you for the kind words!
I really appreciate you helping us all out, but.. your store looks uncohesive, random, unthemed and not beautifully presented with mock-up wall mountings etc.... Are you an artist? I think it takes an artist's vibe to create a beautiful store, and I a;lso believe it takes passion for whatever you're selling, in this case art. Just putting in my thoughts. Many thanks though, really. All the best for all your ventures in 2023 xx
Thanks for your feedback, Karen! Etsy is hardly a serious focus of mine. I originally went into it purely out of side hustle interest. I do plan on giving it more attention at some point in the future, though. I’m currently focusing on other side gigs.
probably because the photos you are selling are not very good and not really of anything
No photos, bad designs, no SEO, no size options...etc
How the hell do you expect to get sales?? 😂
I’ve received sales. And even then, this was purely experimental. Let’s see your Etsy shop. Feel free to link me.
Thanks man. This is an actual worth seeing video. It may not be much but it is money and this video isn’t like “look guys I became a millionaire in 3 hours selling free art * real * * must watch * this video is actual genuine results
Thank you! I’m glad you can appreciate the honesty. 😎
what is crazy that some shops have insane amount of images. like literal paintings they obviously did not paint themselves.
Ngl, your Etsy shop screams 0 to little effort. I’d be genuinely surprised if you’d make a lot of money. I don’t feel like you really proved anything. Maybe follow one of those other youtuber’s advice and see if it works. That’d be a significantly better test.
Thanks for watching!
Loving these videos, David! Not sure why it took me so long to sub to this channel. I've been doing Etsy for a little over a year now and doing decent. I wanted to do tshirts and stickers but that market is already tapped in to by so many. So I started using my 3D printer to make various things like Christmas ornaments no one was selling, beads, and figures. I learned to 3D model and can do simple custom pieces. It's been a blast and gets so busy at times I had to get 2 more printers! Definitely looking into more things to add to my store for variety.
Wow, that’s really awesome! Congrats on your success! 👏🏻
If you wear your hat backwards, for whatever reason, Get a better hat WITHOUT the cheap and plastic band . Very tacky. Bye a hat fitted to you and you will look a lot better, and more successful. Other than that, thanks for your good videos.
I’m guessing that you need a decent image in the first place. Something people actually want.
A lot of them are only BSing and wouldnt showcase their shop, but instead sell training.
Yeah, I’m a little hesitant on courses these days. I prefer to see actual data.
cranked out 40 designs the past few days using Illustrator and Photoshop. See how it pans out.
Very nice! Definitely keep me updated if you can.
Hard work trying to sell rubbish
This is so true. It took me a full month to make greeting card images, print them and then set up the whole Etsy thing. It's not that easy. I think there are RUclipsrs saying things just to get hits on RUclips. I don't know how long I will stick with it as my profit margin is very small. We shall see. Not sure it's worth it.
Thank you! And very true… While there are certainly many successful Etsy sellers on RUclips, many creators tend to chase the views with thumbnails, clickbait titles, etc.
If they guys report their income as "passive" to the IRS they are gonna get a visit
It’s impossible to report income as passive. Income is income. Sorry, but your comment makes no sense. Can you elaborate?
@@creative.finance Rental income and dividends is considered to be passive income to the IRS, other/most types will be subject to FICA self employment tax
@@twistedbydsign99 But this video is about Etsy... I never even mentioned rental income and dividends. 😂 I solely focus on digital side hustles.
Thanks for the reality perspective! It's a nice change of pace from those youtubers with the vague videos about making $70k!
No problem! I keep it real on my channel. More to come!
I don't know anything that anyone has done for only a few months and got really good at it enough to make substantial income. Maybe the purpose of this was to try it so you can make a review video that honestly I think may be a lil pre-mature especially given the fact it seems like you do other things that youre already successful at so your mental and energy is divided. But I agree that it's not passive. Its very active but the reward can be great if the actual time is put in and is mastered
Agreed. I’ve seen some Etsy sellers see crazy success in just a month. But to be fair, I haven’t focused on SEO myself. I’ve heard that can make a massive difference.
Etsy doesn’t put you upfront and center unless you pay for Etsy ads. But you still have to have stuff that people want. Right now , there’s a ton of AI art and a lot of it is scary looking. Tells you where people’s heads are at.
Your etsy store content is all over the place. Focusing on a single niche might help.
This was purely experimental.
I can't see you making much money by selling at such a low price. To make money you need to sell at $25 upwards because you would need to sell lots of products to make descent money if you sell at a low price point.
This was purely experimental for me. But I agree, if you want to make some real money, you’ll have to sell higher priced listings.
You can make more money IN A DAY by collecting pennies off the sidewalk than you do IN A MONTH on Etsy selling digital prints. And a lot less work. Especially now when the market is supersaturated with AI "art".
I draw all my illustrations myself, I don't use Canva, AI or other lazy tools, I keep my prices low and use social media for advertising and I haven't made a single sale the past month. The only way to make some cash is if you are already a five star seller, which can take years. Idk what those other youtubers are talking about, six figure income my ass... it gets the clicks I guess.
Finally someone thats real...
Thanks! I don't understand what you meant that you put them all together. I am selling digital art prints.
i subbed because you're honest
Thank you, Thomas! I really appreciate that. You can always count on me being honest with channel.
I guess you just need to work on your titles and tags
Agreed. I definitely plan on revisiting Etsy with a more targeted mindset.
The potential revolves around good SEO and also social media folowing. You can't rely on your listings to show up on their own and get views. You need to make an effort to show it to the world unfortunately.
But yeah I'm no Etsy warrior either, I have had 3 sales in the last 3 months totalling 5 bucks. But it's been fun setting up and seeing what sells or gets viewed as I go.
Agreed. SEO is definitely a huge factor. I'm currently experimenting with a new Etsy shop and actually talked about it in yesterday's video. Check it out if you're interested!
No offense, but you have to be a lot more creative, also good to target a specific niche that people search for. I really wouldn’t recommend wasting time on this unless you have some artistic or design skills.
I have two degrees in graphic design. This Etsy shop was created quickly and purely for experimental reasons. I’m currently in the process of redoing my Etsy store and will making an update video detailing the changes.
i have made over 478 sales on etsy in one year
What did you sell ?
Wow, very nice! Do you mind linking your store? I would love to check it out.
Link?
Wanted to open a custom shirt shop but also sell premade Marvel or Star Wars items because I love those movies. Something I could do in the side and enjoy but very difficult to be able to sell Marvel or Star Wars items without risking a lawsuit or paying tons for the rights up front
Good call. I wouldn’t risk anything with Marvel or Star Wars. Maybe parody designs could work?
@@creative.finance maybe they would but I was wanting to do designs to go with the movies and stuff that come out. Probably just gonna make some for me and my friends so I don’t get into any legal trouble
Thanks for this. All I see on tik tok are people making thousands of dollars a month on Etsy. It just seemed too good to be true lol.
No problem! And I get it, those kinds of videos tend to turn me off. I prefer to focus on real data.
great video thank you
Thank you, Anna!
I like this honest review.. I will say though and I think you'd agree... design doesn't look like your forte... a lot of the prints I see that sell well look professional and very artistic even in their simplicity with a lot more time taken doing 3/4 different mockups in Placeit or Canvy. I do however think you're right... people should lower their expectations and ride it out long term because it's not gonna pay your mortgage overnight!!
Ironically enough, I’m very experienced in Photoshop. 😂 I honestly did not put a lot of effort into my Etsy listings. This was purely experimental. However, I do plan on giving it another go at some point in the near future. I’ve learned a lot about the platform since making this video.
I did a search for printrockt but didn't find you. Did you take your store down?
It’s still there: etsy.com/shop/PrintRockt I’m only featuring a handful of products now.
I am going in on this, recently I found out about it so I'm doing my research, putting in the time and effort to make something of value for others to buy. Thanks for the insight.
Hey, go for it! And let me know how you make out!
Gotta say, what you are selling is not exactly fine art either. A customer always will be more likely to buy when the perceived value is high. This is just an observation, I do not own a Etsy shop yet. However, I do have a lot of fine art and photos(was a professional photographer for 10 yrs.). I am thinking you offers are not what people are buying or your listings are using bad SEO. I have done quite a few searches on Etsy and the results are people are selling digital prints fairly well. I suspect it is because people want fine art but don’t want to pay the real price of fine art.
LOL true,
Is there a list anywhere on the type of aspect ratios that suit specific items?
Depending on what you’re listing, I would Google specific dimensions.
Hello how do i do this. Want to sell prints prints
Hello! Sorry for the delayed reply. Getting started on Etsy is actually very easy. The hardest part if narrowing down your niche and finding an audience. What are you interested in selling?
thx for your honesty, great video
easy sub
Thank you! I really appreciate that! 👊🏻
Most of those people do click bait, I made thousand of $, but wouldn't show their store LOL
Unfortunately, that’s often the case. I try to focus on creators who share actual results.
