It blows my mind how realistic it moves. Serious props to the late Stan Winston and his studio for bringing these creatures to life.
It's insane, it's like they just hooked a real dinosaur on to some puppet strings. Freaks me out.
Haha I know it's so cool right wan I watch this video I was like I want to make one so I made a lat of puppet actully 🐊
w0lfgrin you know what freaks me out that your a chihuahua dog thats on a computer and knows how to use the keys on the computer that freaks me out
Although the real dinosaur would have protofeathers
I feel the same. That's way too real.
Aww, who doesn't just *love the Compy's?* Truly amazingly magical. Intricate & so detailed. *Our Jurassic universe is like no other. Thank You All.*
I love compies, they are my favorite Dino's,I got heartbroken when I heard that it's not as small as thought.
compys in the novel are terrifying💀
"Its... Its...Its so cute! Can I keep it! Can I keep it!"
- Every fan of small dinosaurs

Needs feathers
+Hatsune Miku
Indeed, Compsognathus most likely had feathers, seeing as several relatives like Sinosauropteryx were discovered to be feathered as well.
CJCroen1393 I guess I would argue that was not the point of the JP movies. They were never about reality imo, but rather to teach a moral lesson. That is, humanity should not play God. In the case of TLW, it had that, but also another and more interesting question to it: should these animals have the right to exist in the wild without the interference of humanity, despite being created by humanity? This is part of why it's my favorite JP film.
DUDE NO NO U CANT HAVE IT THEY HAVE STRONGE BIT TRUEST ME U WELL WAS U DIDENT HAVE DEME SOO NOPE DONT
On my hand I want a dilophosaurus to name George
Omg it looks SO real, all the tiny movements, the arms even, your work is so awesome
Phillip Bathory
It needs feathers tho
Hatsune Miku Not all dinosaurs had feathers, not sure about this one.
That's just it, nobody knows. We don't know if they had skin alone or feathers or fur. We don't know their colours, their sounds, their behaviours, nothing at all. I always think we've probably got it very wrong xd There's a program about how early explorers visited the jungles, captured and killed birds of paradise etc and sent them back to London zoo etc for their natural history museum. Having never seen how the birds were, they used all of their best knowledge to decide how the birds were & how how they used their plummage. It was only on the explorers return they realised they'd got all of it horribly wrong! And that's with a real, already feathered creature. I'm almost certain we've got everything wrong about dinosaurs skin patterns and look. Which is okay, it's impossible task! But it makes me so curious to know the truth. I would really love to know!! I bet the truth is really surprising!
yes all raptors and their subspecies (compys) were totally feathered, while larger dinos like Tyrannosaurs, duckbills, stegosaurus ect were partially feathered
@@discduderules Why does it matter it's a movie
IT EVEN BLINKS
Enzo Supreme IKR
@@stuff6175 I know this is 1 year after you posted this comment but I believe he was surprised because of the size
That is so cute 💚 I would totally keep it as a pet
***** Hahaha
***** I think the JP movies are the last source of accurate information...
That is not to say that having a carnivorous dinosaur isn't dangerous, but I don't think a Compsognathus would pose a significant threat, especially compared to a dog, etc.
***** No I know she was just making a joke :-)
thinkturtles They would eat you !
xlegionx it's worth it XD lol
This is a myth, Trilink2. Practical Effects are far cheaper. With CGI, you pay by the shot and any changes add to the expense. With physical effects, you have a one time build cost, and you can get HUNDREDS of shots.
we need you guys back in films today. while both practical and cg are integral, we see too much of cg today and not so much intimate practical shots anymore.
without the string and poles, that would look so real.
That's what CGI is for. - David
Stan Winston School
wow thanks for the reply.
Yea these things are amazing. i was hoping to someday be able to make things like this, but i'm not so good with sculpting.
you could make it out of cgi, but that isnt really fun, even if you guys make a 4th movie, it will be nice if there was still these models and puppets for that.
Stan Winston School beter that cgi deletes strings and stuf than to mak cgi dino
t84t748748t6
exactly, cant wait to see Jurassic World
So, what you thought of the movie?
I wonder how those tiny eye movements are done..!!!
Simply outstanding work... no words to describe....
They explain it in another video :)
venu gopal they cover the blink mechanism a bit more in this video - THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK Compy Attack.
Enjoy! -Maggie
I can tell how they made this little compsognathus, the head is animatronix and eyes are having fixtures of sort of white lite spark inside the eyeball, and therefor it is being used, and as for it's mouth opening closing, some guy after receiving other guy orders controls it by the jaw controllers that's why they're practicing on it continously because of the moments need some dimentional wise sequence comes after another.no big deal.
That is one amazing puppet. Jesus Christ a true marvel of engineering. That lil fella must have costed a bloody fortune.
It looks like you could make it for a pretty affordable price
That's so sick! It looks so freaking real, theres no CGI or something like that and it still looks amazing!!!
(I'm born in the late 90ies so I guess I'm kinda used to CGI special effects and stuff like this.)
The compsognathus is the cutest dinosaur ever 😍 it looks so real it’s almost disturbing 😮
A CGI effect wouldn't look this good in a million years!
*145 million years.
Universe I disagree. I admire practical effects, but this disdain for CGI is unbelievable. What is it about CGI that pisses so many off... I mean, I'm at a loss.
***** I think there are good CGI effects out there, but for me, the buzz kill is the fact that 99% of the time CGI is screaming CGI right at your face. There is rarely any doubt that what your looking at was never actually in front of a camera. Even a crappy practical effect is going to look "real" in some sense, something which CGI rarely achieves. Of course there are exceptions.
Universe Well, some things are obvious CGI, because it'd be next to impossible to pull off for real.
I don't have a problem with CGI being used over practical effects, CGI is far better now than it was 10 years ago, heck in some areas even since last year. I've seen far more CGI that looks photo-realistic than not.
I've seen some of the best practical effects look clearly fake, because their level of detail while excelling in some areas look painfully fake in other areas.
***** Well yeah, I agree with quite a bit of that. With CGI though, unless it's the best of the best, you're always going to remember it as that "pretty good CGI moment". A practical shot has the upper hand of actually being something "real". Bottom line for me is that an sfx shot kinda falls apart if the first thing that comes to mind when watching is the word "computer". But, as I said, there are exceptions. "Gravity", although atrocious with its science, really showed what can be achieved with CGI.
I NEED THAT PUPPET 0_0
For 13,000 you can have one
Or you can reconstruct one
@@TerpyTee504 only with curiosity... where??!?!?! hahah
@@TerpyTee504 where can I get one?
Cute and deadly. A dangerous combination.
A deadly compsognathus
ur the heroes behind many movies, great , i don't know about this channel , came to know just 2 weeks ago in search of clay sculping tutorial
Im simply amazed at how organic this puppet is. Even when you guys are just lifting it up to retake, the legs look so natural, the artificial joints on this one are superb. I can't want to see some of the work that went into these guys.
They scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
it looks as if the legs have springs in them that gives the natural smooth jumping animation. Its really crazy how good it is
I srsly need that!!! Ever since third grade compsognathus has been my favorite dinosaur!!!
I can't believe how real this looks :) puppetry is amazing
And thats amazing...looks real
far better than CGI.....thats a lot of hard work.....
Stan was truly a genius and a wizard miss him so much 😭
F
RIP LEGEND
Looks soo natural and fluid
Wow, I wonder how long it takes to get a puppet that detailed? The compy moves so fluidly!
wow, thanks so much, you guys and girls are some of my favourite artists in the world
I want one of those puppets so bad omg
I don't need it...
I dont need it...
I definitely don't need it...
I NEEEED ITTT
STAN WINSTON = PURE ARTISTRY! :-)
This is so cute, especially the feeding bit. Adorable 😊😊
Amazing how they make so really
How do you make that? :D I would love to try to build one of them myself :D Does it only move on strings or are there electronics inside the puppet? :P
Hey Aaron, We DO have a lesson that covers many of the same key techniques used in building THE LOST WORLD's Compy puppets. Just go to our website (click on the URL in the video description above) and check out our "How to Make a Monster Puppet - Rods and Cables" video lesson by FX master, David Monzingo. -Matt
You can't say that this doesn't look "that real". it looks just perfect. The only problem they have is when it has to eat. Anything else.. just perfect.
What a cutie-patootie I just can't get over that his eyes blink!
yeah i love the blink on that dino, i'll have to find some of your episodes on animatronics
I WANT ONE OF THESE PLEASE
Woah this is so cute this is now
my favourite carnoivore
Yup! they did actually make a full body animatronic for the t-rex (and i believe for the legs alone they did a seperate rig for the closeup shot). for The Lost World they made two full bodied rexes (minus the legs).
and yea, mostly for the shots of the dinosaurs running they used CGI :)
Amazing. A few times I've asked myself about an apparent "gap" in "movie monster history," particularly with dinosaurs, between the rather poor/primitive stop-motion, "slurpasaurs" time, and Jurassic Park. Despite the first one having a lot of practical effects, most of them, really, it still feels like there's nothing that even comes close to its practical effects in any movie that came before, rather than a more gradual evolution of dinosaur practical effects. Even non-humanoid monsters more broadly, I'd guess, if perhaps the apparent gap in practical effects would be false if we were to consider more types of monsters in between. But I'm no movie historian, not even a practical-effects-enthusiast-amateur-historian, so there may well be a more gradual evolution of practical effects of monsters preceding Jurassic Park. But the only thing that comes close in my mind right now were some dinosaur documentary scenes, some by Phil Tippet come to mind. But in a way it's kind of cheating against my own "theory" as it's all just much better stop motion (with more then-accurate animals) rather than advanced puppetry, if I recall.
It's so cute I want it to be real and I would name him teacup and we would be bffs forever
omg why did you stick strings and a pole on that real dino!
Yep, SteevDragon67, simply comp out the rods, and you've got a living, breathing dinosaur. Long live puppets! -Matt
amazing
In a way the puppeteers are doing the performance. They are acting. Dinosaur acting!
The compy is my favorite dinosaur
If it was me, I'd just make the compy look like it was just hopping around, I mean, it must've been awesome for the guy controlling it.
wow, sieht so echt aus! :) ♥
Its so cute
I wish I had one of these puppets.
glenktv, We're currently shoot a new video lesson on creating eye mechanisms with Stan Winston Studio & Legacy Effects Creature Mechanic, David Covarrubias. Until then, click on the link to our website in the description above and check out our other videos on animatronics. -Matt
xXAngryBirdXxx, Great question! We'll be releasing a JP2 behind-the-scenes video that shows the Compsognathus "eye blink mechanism" in great detail. Make sure to subscribe to our RUclips Channel (if you haven't already) so you'll be notified when it comes out. Thanks, Matt
Great job on this amazing and real looking model! I love jurassic park, everything looks so real! Hoping for new movies :)
Jesus Christ! There's no way that's not a living animal. You guys need to be hired for this stuff more often!
I wonder if Barnaby Dixon took any inspiration from this when building his puppets. His style of puppeteering is so unique, and this is the only thing I've seen come even close to it.
Barnaby!
Hop. Hop, hop! Omg, So Cute! If I had had this puppet when I was a child, I'd do nothing but hop it all day long :D The movement of feet and head look so very real. And the blinking eye is just
Good thing they had that dinosaur tied to that leash.
Hi sirdrakey, This compy puppet is primarily controlled by hand using rods and cables. The eyes blink via a tiny remote-controlled mechanism. -Matt
I need this puppet...
Life will find a way...
You would know...
Better if dr ian malcome said it not john hammond ahah.
Even though we see the strings it's still looks real!Amazing!
The movement of the legs seems to be governed by contact with the ground, creating natural crouching by some sort of elastic armature. Is there a lesson on how to create this, or is there contact info for the SFX artist who crafted these puppets that I may inquire myself? I ask because I am attempting a similar armature myself, and this knowledge would prove beneficial.
Sooo awesome!!!
i want one :D
OMG HOOOOW
GRTE JOB!!!!!!😀
Is their any tutorials on how to make such amazing puppets? If so please list them
Marty, after Stan passed in 2008, the top artists from Stan Winston Studio formed Legacy Effects. We can't talk about it, but if any shop is going to be on JP4, we hope it's them. - David
the eyelids omg!
Those were attached by the compy trainer. ;) Actually, cheetahminer, all the compy mechanisms were created by the Stan Winston Studio dinosaur mechanical crew. -Matt
This is gorgeous, would love to see the facial rig and leg structure for this lil dude.
@PhilsStuffofDoom, Thanks for the compliment. To bring characters to "life" is always the goal. If it doesn't feel alive, the effect isn't working.
It's like LIFE in the making.... Could I have one?
very cool
Man that looks so real 😳 I felt like I was watching a real dinosaur! Not a puppet! Amazing!👌😎👍
I was so scared of the Compys as a kid and they are deadlier when they are attacking in group ! I always closed my eyes when they attacked Dieter Stark in The Lost World :(
All depends on the puppet, but yes, usually there's at least a small team if there are many things to control. - David
I would kill to get one of those puppets!
Oh. My. God. It’s adorable
Those things scare the crap out of me. They're like piranhas on land.
Land Piranhas! That's a movie I'd like to see, MrRepoman197. -Matt
Stan Winston School Omg that would be so freaky. just imagine thousands of them swarming a carnival or something....
+MrRepoman197 oh god
lol me too Matt. As much as I love dinosaurs, MrRepoman is the voice of reason. I wouldn't want them back. I used to work with reptiles (small ones in the pet industry) and I've seen more war wounds than I ever care to, having dino's roaming around would be an utter disaster lol
It looks so real! I wish that puppets and animatronics would be explored more in the film industry, I feel like it was just starting to get really good and then everyone decided to do CGI instead. This looks way more realistic than any CGI I've seen!
How did you make that cut puppet?!?!?!🙀
I really like that Compsognathus Puppet Test.
I WANT SO BAD
Kyyyoooot! And so much friggin' work just to operate /one/!
Took us a while to figure out what "Kyyoooot!" meant! Glad you enjoyed, SanbaiSan. -Matt
Hahaha! My sister and I really enjoyed the NES Jurassic Park game - the "Compy" was really the main character! We even figured out a little victory dance for him when we killed a major bad guy! I will forever
Would love to see that dance, SanbaiSan. Vine? - David
Really? It might take me a week or two to find the emulators, but I'll see what I can do...!
😃😃😃😃😃 love it
I'm watching JP 2 right now
Aww cute
I wish kids were all better behaved so toys could be like this... I wanna play with it too... Compsagnathus are so cute!!
hop hop nom nom
Is it all hand controlled or is some of it like the eye lids and breathing computer controlled
0:52 god mode activated
oh WOW! amazing! can you pleaase tell me how you made this puppet? only what you need to make it, i just want to recreate :). btw i subscribed
Can i buy it? It looks soooooooooooooo goooooooooooodddddddddd
Technical point: when "speed" is heard, it means the camera has reached the exact frames-per-second speed needed (tachometer on the camera) to begin filming. Not sure if it has to be done with video cameras.
Give it to me. Now.
Is the compsognathus real or fake?
Real! - Balázs
this so cool i wish i had that cute little thing!
Sorry, not for sale. - David
