Should You Put Super Singles on Your Prevost or Other Bus/RV?

    Retired Tour Bus Driver here. Not a good idea. One of those has a blow out at 75 MPH and you are going to have a big mess, and also no suppoting Tire to hold things up. With a blow out on a dual you can limp at slow speed to the nearest exit and get off the highway also.

    Interesting to here your perspective I come from trucking background with lots of experience with super singles. I do not disagree with most of what you say except for the failure rate and traction in the snow. Seing the dammag done by a super single many times on trucks I would never put them my bus. You could easily have $30,000 in dammage to the bus that may not be covered by insurance.

    We switched our truck fleet to Super singles 20+ years ago and never looked back. Weight savings was our primary goal. We do run TPMS systems on the fleet and they do save you when you get a low tire. If you run any tire to the point of failure it's going to cause damage.

      @@BlackHawk-yl5gu we run Texas, Ok, LA mostly so don't see much real winter. A couple of my trucks that spend alot of time on jobsites off road use a more aggressive thread design.

    SS are not a smart decision on any rig. Very expensive to replace and almost always require a rim replacement when there's a blowout at highway speeds.

    Any real professional drivers will tell you how we hate super singles. Only one's that use them are the huge fleets that get deep discounts for the tires.
    Off road no super singles are first to get stuck. You can't compare military to industrial. Military has ctis aka Central tire inflation system they can deflate all tires at a push of a button for off road conditions.
    You can't do that with super singles.
    If you have money to burn and like pain. Go get them

    Good video. I wanted to do this on our 96 XL but the wheel makers quit making wide super single stud pilot wheels 10 or 15 yrs ago. So I would have to $convert$ my hubs & studs from stud pilot too hub pilot.

      Admittedly I had no idea so many Prevosts were stud pilot wheels when I bought mine. If I’d known that I would’ve looked to make sure mine were hub pilot, but I lucked out.

    I would not put a SS on anything. I have been doing tires for 18 years and SS are just trouble from the start.

    Did you notice any traction loss in the rain? I’m not much for snow. I remember my hot rod back in the 80’s rear tires were quite wide and the traction sucked in the rain. Lol. Thx. Oh i have a 2015 Newmar London Aire. I’d suppose it would be an option for me also? Thx. New subscriber.

      I haven’t noticed any reduction of traction in the rain or snow, but I haven’t driven in a downpour or bad snow. You’ve still got a lot more weight distributed over that width than your hot rod had.
      I’d say these would definitely be an option on your London Aire. If you have hub pilot wheels then getting wheels is easy, and from there you have to see if the 445/50/22.5 or 455/55/22.5 size is the best fit.
      Really it can be done on any RV with 22.5 drive tires. I did this on my old RV, although on that it gave me about a 5% overdrive which may not be desirable depending on your power curve and factory gearing.

      That’s a great question. It could be feasible from a weight loading perspective, but it wouldn’t for a couple other reasons. The first one is I’m not aware of any super single sized rims that are designed for dual setup, and you’d need those. But after you got those, the Prevost doesn’t have space within the wheel wells for dual super singles without both hitting components on the inside of the wheel and sticking out on the outside. The former would require massive structural modifications and the latter would push the total bus width past 102”, which is the max legal allowable width without an oversize permit, so that would be a nonstarter. But if you did make those modifications, then you’d also need to change the air springs entirely since the drive axle springs aren’t really sized to properly support and provide a good ride if they’re supporting that entire weight, the same goes for the shock absorbers.
      What I’d also considered was replacing the tag axle tires with super singles. I’ve already got the 365 tire conversion on steer and tag. When I did measuring it didn’t look like there was enough room on the tag to support super singles though.

    Absolute ridiculous idea..... Real truck drivers won't run super singles.....that's says it all.
