I don't know if this was mentioned, but the reason you are seeing shading along the edges of the backing board is that is the outgassing of the chemicals used in making pulp, it is NOT the board outgassing as the paper quality of any board is much higher than the older comics. The reason for using the neutral boards and papers is to neutralize the outgassing chemicals so they will not affect the pulp as much, or the cover, which is a high quality clay paper. Also, poly bags have plasticizers that leach out, that is the reason Mylar is preferred, very stable with no leaching or degrading that could affect paper articles. Outgassing is driven by prevailing conditions, such as heat, so proper storing will also help keep comics in good shape much longer. Most current comics (
oldestgamer Sure does! I assumed it was from the books but was not sure. I just knew it was not something you want to see. Thanks so much for the comment!
oldestgamer Very thorough explanation! I had to read it more that once to understand it fully! I should have paid more attention in my Chemistry classes. I have always found it interesting that the early SA Marvel comics paper (1961-1965) seem to be more sensitive and can degrade faster. By the late 1960's and into the Bronze Age even, the paper seems to be of a better quality.
Burco1 If you read the link that cougar provided regarding the discussion about EGerber vs. SBS boards by other vendors, (those are the boards you see in most comic book shops...) there is a fairly in-depth discussion regarding the chemistry of archiving books. Some of that is somewhat suspect in the conclusions drawn as the scientific method is a bit haphazard such that erronious conclusions are drawn, but the main thing is that proper storage (cool temps, low humidity, compressed packing to limit oxygen to the papers, mylar bags) provide the best chance of keeping the older SA books from browning. The use of EGerber backing boards and microchamber paper (yes expensive but will last 50+ years) will help keep the acids from browning out the covers, that browning also makes the cover paper brittle which will lead to chipping, hope this helps!
Always enjoy your videos Cougar. Glad you survived another snow plowed winter. Regarding back boards, lately, I have slipped my books into Mylars and sealed with no board. Then I place two large boards behind the "book in Mylar" (so the board never touches the book at all). Then, place those in a larger open end Mylar. You still get the support of the board but the Mylar is the only thing contacting the book.
Tec31kidI saw someone else put the book in a mylar with a 1 and 1/2 inch flap, taped it shut and then put it in an open end mylar. Looked nice, you could see the front and back covers and looked pretty well protected.
Hya Cougar!!! Have switched about 90% of my books with mylar and acid free boards, it's a good idea. Nice Avengers #26. Love The Yancy Street issue, fun story. And another nice F.F., I'm trying to complete up to issue 108. Spidey Annual #1, I still have my original copy, one of my all time fave books. And I'll be back in Buffalo August 10th, for 10 day's!
***** I don't know if I can handle you for 10 days! haha Man, that mylar is expensive but its the last time I'll have to do it. When you sent me those Batman books to get signed I thought " yep, this is how I'm doing my books next time" Very happy with all my books this time especially the ASM
Nice books! Great deal on ASM Annual 1 and Captain Marvel 1. Beautiful copy of FF 29 as well. It's nice to hear those birds chirping in the background too haha. Cheers
cougarcomics I'm shocked. I honestly thought a Spidey comic THAT old AND a #1 would be going for more, especially given how much Amazing #1 goes for. And heck, Captain Marvel #1 for $50 is almost robbery. Make sure to hide the evidence when the cops come calling.
Hey Cougar, was glad to see a new vid from you in my sub list. These are all beautiful books as usual. I especially like the CM 1. Ever since I was a kid and saw that cover for the first time in my uncles collection I loved it and still do. Nice upload buddy.
It's getting harder and harder to get decent deals on any Silver Age book. I do agree with you; I have seen some books in really rough shape with high price tags on them and it's disheartening. I did recently manage to pick up an Amazing Spider-Man #12 for less than $80. The spine has the usually heavy creasing but the cover is really nice as is the interior of the book. Nice pics up especially that CM #1 with that heavy black cover.
GreatGarloo Sounds like a nice price on the Spidey. You really gotta hunt now compared to 10 years ago. Ebay is all buy it now or a crazy starting price. I see the same books over and over cause they don't sell
AG Surfer Thanks, I think I really did great with those two books. The more I see what they are selling for the better I feel I did. Thanks for the comment!
TheSpaceBaby Hey! How ya doing? That's what I graded it as. On Ebay there is a cgc 6.0 with at least a 1 inch spine split and magic marker on the cover. Nice to hear from you, thanks for the comment
I love deals like that where the Collector is happy and the dealer is always glad to sell books for near the price they wanted! You mentioned you bought an Amazing Spider-Man Annual #2 from this same guy? It took me years to find a nice one of those too!
AK&FriendsGamesOff the top of my head I would say cgc but I don't feel qualified to make a video on it. They are both good from what I can tell from the books I have cracked out. Thanks for watching!
*****Thanks Doc, how the heck you been? Have you seen the "top 50 " tag that was going around a few months ago? I tagged you and I think someone else did to.
Yeah sometimes I get lucky on the price too...I recently bought Amazing Spider-Man #39 (1st Romita) in VG for only $70 from a comic book store in NYC...on eBay they wanted even more money for lesser condition....you've got to be careful on eBay...I find better deals in brick and mortar stores.
Presto418 Unfortunately there are only 2 stores in my area and neither are big into Silver age so its on the web or the 2 local shows. I have found some nice books at the shows lately. thanks for the comment
well, after reading the link above, I will need to reassess my understanding vis-a-vis backing boards, got some in Gerbers, but looks like a pull night...
cougarcomics I have been using the thin boards spoken of between the covers and the front and back pages, wanted to use the microchambers, but didn't have the cash at the time, so I need to go back and pull all of those thins from inside my books. It is very clear that the outgassing of acidic compounds from the pulp attacks the clay covers, easy to see that, so the use of microchamber paper will be a help to slow that down. Had a lot of books already boarded with Gerbers, and, after learning how to properly grade (thanks for that video, that was excellent!), I will be selling off a fair amount of my silvers and bronzes to help pay for upgrading the backing boards and adding microchamber papers to the rest of the collection. Already found a nice Avengers Annual 6 just sitting in poly, poly has to go!
cougarcomics Tough to grade without a better view of the book but for sure I think the grade is higher than what the dealer said. I am guessing at least 5.5 based on what I can see.
I don't understand why you pay so much extra for a slabbed book if you just break the slab once you get it. I mean I guess you don't plan on reselling and like the self assurance of it being high grade, but that's a huge price to pay for it.
Hi, I don't pay extra for slabbed books. Everyone assumes I do. I constantly hunt for deals. I bid on a lot of books and win very few. I just went to a show today and came back with nothing but the money I went with. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@cougarcomics That's great that you can get those deals! I'm pretty young and have only been collecting marvel silver age books since about 2014. I usually only get a few books a year and am still yet to start buying CGC books. That's a bit down the road for me, haha. Great videos and impressive collection!
Im looking at picking up some Avengers and F4 comics,, is each comic a new story or does the story follow on each edition..? i.e if I pick up #41 of something will it make sense when reading..?
Too involved to answer in length but for the FF from 40 down they are mostly single stories. They got very good at planting seeds for the next story line so you want to get the next issue!
Hello Cougar! Now you have me thinking that I had better change all of my backing boards! That is a great FF # 29 you unslabbed. It looks really nice in high grade. You did very well on the Spidey and Captain Marvel. Have you ever gone to any Cons in Albany NY or is that too far for you?
Burco1 My in-laws live in Schenectady. It's about a 4 to 41/2 hr trip. So I guess it's a possibility. Check out the comments below from "oldestgamer" about the stains on my boards. Did you go to the link in the description box? that interesting too.
cougarcomics p.s. a small clarification on free grader note...it is only free to the person that submitted the book. If you buy a slab and want to see the notes, you will still have to pay for it or ask the seller nicely for the free notes :) assuming he was the one that submitted the book....otherwise SOL
Great to see another video from you, Cougar. The Fantastic Four has been my favourite title for about forty years, but your beautiful books put my collection to shame. I'm currently switching all my newsprint books to Gerber boards too, but it's an expensive process (even more so here in the UK). Was this the acid-free board test you were talking about ?: boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=4534727#Post4534727
Gary Spencer Millidge Yep, that's the one, thanks! I've been collecting on and off for years and one thing is for sure: there will always be a better collection out there somewhere.Enjoy your collection and be proud of it!
cougarcomics Actually it was your classic attic find video that got me hooked on watching all these comic haul videos, and as a result, has reignited my interest in collecting superhero and silver age again. Which I can ill afford. So, thanks! I think! :)
I like the way you shop. No preconceived notions of what you want. Makes it easier to say no to high prices.
sarge td Very true, I never thought of it that way! If I really "have" to have a book I would probably over spend for it.

E Rod212 I finally bit the bullet and glad I did. won't have to redo them anymore
I've missed your videos. Gorgeous books as always. Thanks for sharing.

Nice pickups, Annual 1 is getting hard to find in presentable condition. Fast unslabbing work, beautiful books.
curtiscamronVery happy with the ASM, don't think I would buy it in higher grade. The slabs seem to get easier to open for some reason, hehe

Total homerun, that annual looks like a 6.5.
