I think one of the motivating factors for painting an after-dinner table scene was that all of the items that may have been on the table, in whatever the arbitrary not-positioned placement left there as a result of the very human activity of eating dinner, would be a kind of arbitrary and completely temporary monument left unintentionally, unpretentiously, by people he loved, and to capture that sacred family time of gathering, He could paint those things as symbols ,so to speak, of a sacred time of family experience. His painting would crystallize that time spent and immortalize it forever.
