Fairfield Porter is an American realist painter famous for his figurative paintings which he produced in the midst of the abstract expressionist movement. Porter's work-portraits, interiors, and landscapes of Maine and Southampton, where his family homes are located-is characterized by an energetic painterly style. He is influenced by the French painters Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and his knowledge of abstract expressionism. As a realist, Porter draws inspiration from his own life, for example, he portrays his daughter in the garden of her family home in Under The Elms (1971-1972). Born June 10, 1907 in Winnetka, Illinois, Porter studied at Harvard and continued his education at the Art Students League in New York, where he became friends with writers like Frank O'Hara and John Ashbery. Porter, also a critic, is politically active and a regular contributor to the leftist magazine The Nation. He continued to paint throughout his life and died on September 17, 1975 in Southampton.
