i am astounded at how much of a sausage party your collection of favorite characters is!!! not seeing jasnah or syl or navani in the top five is crazy to me! i understand the shallan frustration since she doesn't really get good character development til the second book, but man. seeing the dismissal of some of the women characters at the hand of their relation to the men in the story caught me off guard; i've found that brandon's women are written so well and with so much depth! they completely serve themselves as standalone characters apart from the man characters (although it's definitely true that there are way more men in the main cast than women) and i saw very little of that woman-written-by-man syndrome in my reading of the story. granted, i never listened to the audiobook. not sure how that affected your experience of the story since it seems the voices had a pretty big impact on your opinion. as a woman who reads lots and lots of fantasy, brandon's women in stormlight are some of the most well-written I've found in a while. granted I've never read romantasy books like ACOTAR, but i found that the depth of brandon's women in most cases paralleled and in some cases exceeded that of women written by leigh bardugo. the women in that story, written by a woman, are hinged more on the men in their stories than jasnah or shallan ever are. navani's got some moments of i-won't-shut-up-about-dalinar-and-that's-my-only-characteristic, which is annoying at times, but in the case of syl, she's a radiant spren. she kind of can't NOT be hinged on her relation to Kaladin. I don't think brandon quite holds a candle to an author like ursula k. le guin when it comes to writing women, but i think you've taken too much credit from him for doing so well in the first installment of his series. and it only gets better as the series progresses! anyways, great review!! love hearing different perspectives to bounce my own off of! very glad i found your channel :)

i appreciate your comment. i do think the main characters of this book were more dalinar kal and adolin with jasnah shallan and navani taking mostly back seats to become bigger later (though shallan’s voice in the audio book definitely drove me crazy lol). i think looking at how high wit and yalb are in my ranking can give some insight into how unserious these rankings are
i haven’t read le guin, but i’ve read some bardugo and maas. i think something about my taste in books is that i mostly read romance and if i read fantasy (before my husband got me into the cosmere) it was very much romantasy. i like to think my takes got a bit better and more fair as i continued reading this series haha, definitely watch the other reviews and let me know what you think!
