Giancarlo is hoping to play Professor X in whatever X-men related they do next, because he is tired of being the bad guy. I mean he is amazing at it, but I guess every actor feels the need to escape typecasting. Can you imagine Gus as Professor X tho? ''Look at me, Magneto.''
It's so fascinating seeing your perspective on Giancarlo and Gus, because when this episode first came out, almost NOBODY in mainstream audiences had heard of him or was familiar with his acting ability. So the reveal of who Gus was, or his capacity to be "bad news" was wayyy more of a surprise. Whereas now, after his mainstream career as charismatic villains really took off, you have a totally different immediate reaction when he first pops up. :)
Only because he plays Gus Fring in everything now. If he'd been famous in the same way Bryan Cranston was, viewers might have still dismissed him as 'that one guy who was in that one show from the 90s'
Agreed. Something similar is true with movies that have been memed to death. A younger audience can never fully understand what a mind fuck The Usual Suspects was when it first came out, for example. I try to keep my general pop culture awareness to a minimum to avoid having things spoiled.
Mandala is a symbol of significance in Hinduism and Buddhism, and a Sanskrit word meaning "circle." In the context of this episode, it refers to the circle of birth and death, as the episode begins with Combo's death and ends with Skyler giving birth.
And it's completely unrelated to the _Mandela effect,_ which is named after Nelson Mandela because a lot of people collectively misremembered that he died in prison in the 80s when in reality he went on to become the president of South Africa after the apartheid regime collapsed and didn't die until 2013.
@@MLennholm while we are remembering and correcting let's point out the Mandela Effect highlights how most people refuse to admit they could be wrong about or miserembering something and create a timeline merging explanation to protect their pride. Hahah. Humans are weird.
At least for me, this was my first time seeing Giancarlo Esposito in anything at all. He was a total unknown to me. First big reveal and acting from him was amazing then, and I still get chills seeing it now.
Doesn't matter if you've seen him in 100 other shows and movies, once you watch Breaking Bad, he's Gus Fring for you from then on. Same goes for Saul Goodman, Jesse, and Wultah.
The drug Jane and Jesse shot up was heroin, not meth. Jesse had never done heroin before but it was what Jane was addicted to. So yes, the Trainspotting comparison is apt.
Gus is a significant part of why this show is considered one of the best series of all time imo, and I believe its the earliest media I saw Giancarlo Esposito in, dudes a fantastic actor.
Aaron Paul watched tons of video footage of people responding to heroin so he could get the visuals right in that scene. Unbelievable. Such a sad twist for Jesse and Jane.
Giancarlo Esposito kills it in his role. In promoting a spin off show, he was staring in some Los Pollos Hermanos “Training Videos” and they’re hilarious and creepy.
I think when Breaking Bad came out the only thing I had ever seen Giancarlo Esposito in was The Usual Suspects, and he didn't exactly have a huge role in that. Obviously he was in a lot of things before this, but Gustavo Fring is the role that really got him noticed. His performance through Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul is an absolute tour de force.
James, you've seen Giancarlo in a non villain role: He was the detective in 'the usual suspects' that got the confession from the survivor of the boat massacre 😉
James, I was supposed to be born on a Friday the 13th, but because my mom needed a caesarian, the doctor absolutely insisted on scheduling a day early, so my birthday is on the 12th. I am eternally sad about this. But my mom made it up to me by naming me Karen. Hilarious.
0:54 it's funny how your example of the mandela effect was about misspelling and you misread mandala for mandela lol, this must be how the mandela effect is born
No, he actually explained the MANDELA effect pretty good with people misremembering historical events. A lot of folks assume Nelson Mandela died during his time in prison in the 1980s (he did a hunger-strike IIRC) and totally blank out about the fact that he was the president of South Africa after his prison sentence and died in 2013, a mere 10 years ago.
Giancarlo Esposito isn't a villain "everywhere". He was an FBI Agent, and son of the police chief (Played by Yaphet Koto) in "Homicide, Life on the Street"
Aight, Gus in the house! Now from what I hear, Giancarlo was supposed to be a short time guest star here. Sort of another connection for Walt and Jesse. But what he brought to the table in this very scene, not only made them bring him into focus, but also launched the career we all know and love him for. See people, this is what it means to have one shot, and making it count. Sometimes all you need is a few minutes to leave a lasting impression, and make them want you back.
4:34 Yeah dude, Giancarlo Esposito is gonna be great in this. He does become the villain in everything, lol, and he credits Breaking Bad for saving his career and kickstarting this new chapter where he gets cast in so many roles (usually bad guys).
I thought you knowing about Giancarlo Esposito ahead of time might ruin the reveal, but it actually made it more fun watching you anticipate when he would show his true colors. Great reaction!
Out of all the crazy stuff in this show.. the scene with her singing to Ted is the only SINGLE time I ever have had to, and continue to have to, skip past.
it pays homage to a similar cringe scene in the Sopranos where Johnny Soprano’s former mistress sings the same song to Tony and it feels out of place and just as awkward
It's funny because for most of us watching Breaking Bad back in the day, we probably never even saw Giancarlo Esposito before. Also, Giancarlo Esposito has been around since the 80s and has nearly 200 acting credits on IMDB. Makes me sad to see people commenting that this show put him on the map as if Gilligan's team "discovered" him. The show gave him a greater platform to shine, no doubt, but he had been paying his dues for a long time. I got into Breaking Bad very late, so when I first saw Esposito appear, it was the most pleasant surprise, and I was like, WHOA!

First episode on a Saturday and the finale before a month later. Good lord this show is outstanding, but I really feel for the people who watched this in real time and had to sustain weeklong breaks between episodes.
"Mandala" means "Circle" in Sanskrit, which is a reference to the Buddhist teaching of "wheel of life", as the episode starts with the death of Combo and ends
I agree, Friday the 13th birthday is awesome! When they said they were inducing for our first child Thursday the 12th my first thought was “we’re gonna have this baby!” Then nearly as excited “hell yes, a Friday the 13th baby!”
One of the most famous examples of The Mandela Effect is from Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back! Most people, including James Earl Jones in an interview, believed the line was, "Luke, I am your father," when in fact it's, "no, I am your father." It's either the multiverse overlapping or folks misremembering. The other example is whom the effect was named after. People swear that while he was in prison, Nelson Mandela died or was killed and replaced and the man who was released and later elected President, was a clone or some imposter. Giancarlo Esposito has an extensive career from Trading Places, School Daze and Malcolm X to Maze Runner, Farcry and The Usual Suspects! Personally, I think School Daze is an important "coming to age" film as Higher Learning, American History X and Boys In The Hood! Should be shown in every juvenile detention facility.
I think the Mandella effect describes how your memories, over the passage of time, are distorted by your own unique perception of events and influenced by personal experience and out side influences.
As a stranger to the series, I knew Gus's exit from the series but I didn't know his entry. It's kind of stunning to see him do so as a supervisor of a fast food place, didn't expect that at all.

Now i'm imagining someone getting a MANDALA tattoo of Nelson MANDELA's face 🤣
There's some serious characterization of Combo in his death scene. He had a bigger, better gun and he chose to run instead of fight back. He would rather risk death than kill a child. A child trying to KILL him! He was the fucking real one out of everyone in the crew. 😢
nice to see you mention the titles of the episodes.....watch out for I.F.T. coming up soon. Best titled episode.
I was looking forward to you finally finding out the guy in far cry is actually in this, because you always reference far cry.

I've only seen one bad performance from Giancarlo and that was from his time on the TV show Revolution.

4:18 Dr. Kennedy from The Sopranos

Heroine feels like *LOVE* just filling your entire being. It's one of the _worst_ things ever made.
Don't *ever* consider touching it y'all. It is Death.
Viewer retention on this vid gonna be wild putting THAT scene as the cold open lol
